he watched sleep kiss kano’s eyes shut until his lips stopped trembling with pointless mumbling, until he finally settled down for the night. Daisuke’s couch might not be the comfiest place to crash on, but seeing Kano stand by his door with scraped elbows and broken spirit sparked distress inside him. Not even with lungs full of water and a ripped off heart would he ever deny Kano shelter, or pretty much anything.

His gaze remained on Kano’s face: how peaceful he looked asleep, as if all the worry troubling his mind was just an evanescent memory. It had Daisuke wondering if he would ever bite the dust. Even thick skin surrendered to the sharpest knives and no matter how hard Kano pretended, his facade was not invincible. Though Daisuke knew little of what the boy had seen and lived through, the little specks of torn down hope and pain spoke instead.

He heaved a sigh and fixed the blanket he had thrown over Kano. The night lamp flickered in the midnight dark, but it didn’t bother Daisuke at all.
