In the last two years, I’ve encountered the quote “Ringo’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles” attributed to John more times than I can count.

It always hits my brain as wrong not just because I’m nothing if not a Ringo defender but because John knew how freakin lucky they were to have Ringo. If John did say it, it was almost surely intended as a joke and not one to be repeated by Ringo detractors as any kind of evidence of his skills 60 years later.

Fab Four Archivist says it never happened:

There are fans in the comments who swear they’ve seen video of the 1966 New York press conference where John says this. I’ve watched what I thought was the complete presser and do not remember it. It may be a case of the meme writing over memories.

cool bc Im having more Thoughts about what Fears The Girl and the Fab Four align with bc like. I know the whole point of TMA is the Eye is seeing this whole thing and then getting people's stories and fear out of it, but like. The Girl, with her bomb-powers and her grief and the ruin she sees over and over again is so INCREDIBLY Desolation-aligned (not to mention you previously stating that like, the Zones are a Desolation domain) and I'm like....how would that work with her as Archivist? could be fascinating story material honestly. plus like, I'm thinking about the Four now, and like Stranger-aligned Party, bc there's a Lot of identity issues going on there and the idea of reinventing yourself so often that other people do it in your name and you literally lose yourself, and (yeah this is on my personal hc too) but like, Vast-aligned Jet who just sees the entirety of the desert and the night sky and thinks, rightly, "oh this just goes on forever. that's terrifying. that's awesome", and Desolation Ghoul, who as previously stated just devolves wildly into attempting to blow up every problem, and then like. Slaughter Kobra, I have feelings about Slaughter Kobra

so it's more just a few random ideas than an actual fully fleshed out AU but I technically have 2 TMA AUs one where the zones and city are a desolation/stranger domain and one that sort of follows the plot of TMA

so the first AU the city and zones as a domain are a bit unique because the lines between fears are blurred as they are in s5 but one part of the domain has a stronger focus on one fear and one part on the other instead of it all being twisted up, but both fears affect all parts of the domain. the stranger has a stronger hold on the city and the desolation has a stronger hold on the zones. the domain is focused on the crushed hope of thinking you escaped your torment only to find you're now being tormented in an entirely different way, a way you don't know how to handle.

someone might escape the city only to find the desolation of the zones, and that the killjoys culture and customs are so unfamiliar that its like being stuck with the stranger all over again. a killjoy might turn themselves in to the city only to have to learn to handle everyone's lack of identity which it so prized in the desert, and the fear of losing everything never goes away as they have to learn to hide their true identity and fit in with all the "citizens" because who konws what might happen if they get found out? the director is the avatar in charge of the city section and the witch is in charge of the zones section and all other characters are just victims here. i'd like to write a statement-esque fic about this domain but idk if or when that's gonna happen

the second one is far less fleshed out but i was thinking the girl as the archivist, the witch as the head of the institute, dr d + the station crew as the former archivist and archival assistants, the four as the early archival assistants (taking the places of tim sasha and martin) while the vs are some of the later assistants (like melanie daisy and basira) except for val who is the not!party, various background/twitter characters or ocs as some of the recurring avatars (like jude perry, oliver banks, etc)

Sam’s Update

It’s been Bookconline this weekend and I am loving being lazy on my couch and seeing all these fab folks talking about books.

I’ve also been watching the news and the Twitters about all the protests surrounding the death of George Floyd. First, I am really proud to see folks of all races come together to honor those who were unjustly murdered and to plead for change. I really and truly hope that this is it. That this is the time that the message will be heard and taken to heart. #BlackLivesMatter

What Sam Finished:

Deep Roots by Nick Sullivan: This is the third book in a mystery (?) series, sorta. Boone and Emily are scuba instructors and they hop from place to place, and every time they go, something happens and they get dragged in to it. This one is set in Belize. Nick did it again. He surprised me with the ending. It’s literally impossible to predict the end of his books.

Five Dark Fates by Kendare Blake: I’m gonna be totally honest, I wasn’t going to pick this book up. It’s the 4th book in the Three Dark Crowns series… I was super disappointed in the last one. This is the final installment and it was just as BLAH as the last one. It’s not even worth a full review. My main thoughts are… welp, four books to do exactly what they were supposed to do.

Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha: This is a near-future post-apocalyptic romance. Nina, is a leader in her community. She and her team are archivists and they print books for folks. They use the money to help the community out. Knox is a former captain who is on the run with his team. One of his team has been captured and the blackmailer wants Nina. So Knox tricks Nina and her team into “helping them break into another archive/library” when really he’s taking her to the blackmailer. That’s not going to end well at all. I started this having absolutely no idea it was a romance novel. It felt a lot like a fade to black YA, and THEN things got steamy. Anyway, full review to come but long story short, I inhaled this book. It was very VERY good.

What Sam is Currently Reading:

Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb: This is the first book in the Liveship Traders series n the same Farseer world as the love of our lives, Fitz. I really adored that series and plan to keep reading the books in this world. I’ve finally re-started the audio. Let’s see if I’m ready yet.

A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow: I literally just started this. I’m in chapter 3. But it’s been pitched to me as a Black Mermaid story and I’m here for that. Especially right now.

Minda’s Update

Feeling refreshed after getting out of town for the week and seeing family. Glad we did it.

What Minda is reading now:

The Jewel Thief by Jeannie Mobley – After being accused of stealing King Louie XIV’s diamond, she only has one chance to convince him of her innocence and win back her true love. I’m 60% done and so far it’s pretty good.

What Minda finished:

Nobody Will Tell You This But Me by Bess Kalb – Emmy-nominated TV writer and New Yorker contributor pens a true story as told to her from her grandmother. If you’ve ever had a grandma you were close to , this one is a real tear-jerker.

Ginny’s Update

Happy Monday.

I would already like another 3-day weekend. But managed to actually get some reading done. But I also started an additional three or four books that I put down after about five pages. I’m apparently super picky right now with what actually gets attention.

What Ginny Finished:

You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero: Honestly, this was the worst possible time to read this book. There’s a whole chapter about “Fear is your fault” saying there’s nothing in life that fear should keep you from… and while a lot of the messages were solid the book also felt a little condescending…

More than Neighbors by Shannon Stacey: We received this book as an arc and I will definitely be reviewing. I thought this book had a problem with pacing and tone. Meredith and Cam were perfectly nice, if not slightly predictable.

The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper: Main character’s dad gets accepted to the astronaut program which is being followed by a reality tv show. He falls in love with one of the sons of another astronaut and also deals with his very popular live-streaming news show. It’s a cute and very quick read. 

Jinxed by Amy McCulloch:  This book was freaking cute. Lacey is a preteen who wants to go to the school attached to the Apple-esque company that created “companion robots” called Baku. She finds a mysterious Baku and suddenly is accepted to the school. This book is at the youngest end of the YA spectrum and was a delight. The stakes all felt real, and appropriately frustrating. This book ends on a cliff-hanger and I’m definitely going to end up reading the next one.

Running Full Tilt by Michael Currinder: This book hurt. The summary on the back probably gave too much away b/c there’s a twist at the end that may have been better as a surprise. Leo, the main character, starts running when his developmentally disabled brother starts attacking him with little warning. After a move, a new school, a strained relationship between his parents, etc, running is the perfect getaway. Leo’s character was incredibly interestingly built b/c he tends to go with other people’s flow in all ways, which makes sense once you take all the portions of his life into account

What Ginny is Currently Reading:

The Vicar’s Daughter by Josi S. Kilpack: I’ve had this on my tbr since my very first bookcon. Cassie sends letters “from” her sister to a man her sister met b/c her parents are determined her older sister needs a match before her own debut. I find this kind of plot to be iffy, it can be done really well or done really painfully. And frankly, I’m worries this might be on the end I don’t prefer.

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown: Yeah, another one of these so close to the last one. But hey, that’s how library holds tend to go. I’m liking this one a little better b/c this book deals with “how to live wholeheartedly” which  means accepting your faults and recognizing the good. That’s a little more my speed.

Weekly Wrap-Up: May 25 – 31, 2020 Hey everyone!! Sam's Update It's been Bookconline this weekend and I am loving being lazy on my couch and seeing all these fab folks talking about books.

A compilation of the Altair fam! (Sorry, women only for this round). Shoutout to picrew.me for helping me design them--yes, I know a lot of them look REALLY similar, but bear with me here. They are a family, after all (their initial sketches make them pretty distinct from one another, but those aren’t going to be uploaded here yet).

First in the top two are our founding mothers: Verity Altair (a fab redheaded minor character in the #mainland timeline), and Bessa, the refugee who left her home behind and came to a small harbor town in the southwest part of the continent with her yet-to-be born son.

On the bottom are three mainland born-and-raised gals: Reina Na, originating from a nomadic tribe in the central grasslands who came to live in the same harbor town as Bessa’s son, Rafal, and fell in love with him; Cana Altair (nee Na), daughter of Reina and Rafal, a rebellious artist who had an affair with Verity Altair’s (married!) son Ousmain and gave birth to Ina Altair, our final member of the Altair fam before the Fire Shaman. Yes, Ina gets her red hair from Verity and passed it on to her daughter, Tawny. Ina is also the only family member in this group to return to Odessea, as her daughter brings her back in 5247. Here's some general info on the lovely ladies of Tawny’s extended family--she does get to encounter all of them at some point, plus her male relatives too.

Verity Altair: b. 5137 in the Kali Kingdom capital city of Asuza, d. 5207 in the prospering southern harbor town of Leos. Her parents were wealthy merchants and she lived her life in luxury until she was 13 years old, and war descended on her home. She had a secret, however: she was a magic-born, and could make vines and plants grow where nothing could. She joined the Magical Militia and fought against those who opposed the magic-born, eventually moving to Leos and staying on with the Militia as a part of their southern office until she turned 16. This was when Elspeth Regis, an old friend of her mother, Felicity, discovered her and became intent upon presenting her to society. Verity, believing her parents dead, accepted the offer to have a family again. She became involved with the upper crust of Leos and realized her dream of restarting her parents’ shipping company. Upon marrying Elspeth’s younger son, Guillaume (who took her last name), she finally had enough capital to begin her business venture. She had two children, Veronique Altair (b. 5172, d. 5256), and Ousmain Altair (b. 5177, d. 5249). Upon her death, she discovered the birth of her secret granddaughter, Ina, in a town far to the west.

Bessa: See the #air timeline for more! Fun fact about Bessa: she cut off her plait (as seen in the character design) to be unrecognizable to anyone searching for her. Short hair on a woman was, before Tawny’s time, unacceptable (with one infamous exception from the Earth Timeline, but she was a Companion...).

Reina Na: b. 5152 on the open grasslands, d. 5227 in the harbor town where she met Rafal. Reina was once a nomad who loved nothing more than learning the traditional dances of her people, but she dreamed of making a name for herself and performing across the land. At the age of 15, she ran away and began to go from town to town, working and training as a dancer. She became a professional at 21, moving to train with a famous teacher in a small southwestern harbor town we all know and love that same year. After living with other dancers for four years, she finally began to look for a place of her own, coming across a boarding house run by a young archivist from City Hall. His name was Rafal, and the only drawback was that he lived with his mother, Bessa, who ran the home and worked as a maid and gardener. Reina moved in with him and stayed for a year, only to leave for a two-year tour across the coast. Upon her return, she realized she was still drawn to Rafal, and the two were married in 5181. They had a daughter, Cana, but Reina’s strenuous training and physical injury meant she would die if she gave birth to another child. She later focused on being a teacher of dance, as well as raising her granddaughter, Ina. She was also a skilled backup pianist (taught by her friend and choreographer), leaving her beloved piano and sheet music to her great-granddaughter, Tawny. She died in the same year as her husband, leaving Ina with all the stories Bessa had told her about their island home.

Cana Altair: b. 5182, d. 5226 in the harbor town her parents and grandmother lived in. She was named for her mother’s mother, the original Cana. This second Cana was brought up with love (perhaps too much) and became an artist, though her mother wished she was more inclined to fashion. She was close to her grandmother, Bessa, who died when she was 13. After her death, when she and her parents moved to the old house that had been Bessa’s, Cana discovered her old unsent letters to her dead lover, Rafa, and began to sketch them. In her twenties, she dallied with painting commissions for rich men, and had a two-year affair with Ousmain Altair, who traveled to her town for business. He never knew that they were to have a child, and abandoned her in 5206. When her child, Ina, was born with the same red hair as her father, she felt ashamed of what she had done. Leaving the child with her mother, Cana set out to re-structure her life. She brought her daughter back home before the age of ten, but already, the distance between them was obvious. She was killed in 5226 in a terrible accident at the harbor, looking for work, leaving her daughter with her poor grandparents once more. 

Ina Altair: b. 5207 in her family's harbor town, d. 5286 in Odessea (the last death to be recorded in this history). Somewhat following the naming tradition Reina had stuck to with her daughter, Cana named her child Ina, as a part of Reina. Ina was essentially raised by her grandparents, teased about looking so different from them and about their age, and learned early to conceal her feelings. She attained a job in a flower shop on the harbor at the age of 18, but the following year, her mother Cana was killed, and she had to go live with her grandparents once more. Both were also getting on in age, and died the year after their daughter. Alone and distraught, Ina found solace in a love affair with a gold-eyed fisherman who gave her a daughter with the same eyes. Her desire to be a better mother to her child than her mother had been to her meant that she hid the baby, Tawny, from her father, and raised her to be a perfect woman. When Tawny’s depressive episodes set in, she told her stories of Odessea, giving her a new goal to strive towards. In the fall of 5246, her daughter set out for the islands to the south, not to return until late winter with stories of how she had found their home once more. At the time, Ina had just lost her job at the flower shop and was looking for change, so she agreed to leave behind her home. She and Tawny found Bessa’s old writings and Cana’s sketches and decided to preserve them at the Shaman’s home on the island. While Ina’s death is somewhat uncertain at this time, she died content, in the place she hadn't realized she belonged to the entire time.

My Fab Favorite: The Levi’s® Calico Jean

Our Fab Favorites asks LS&Co. insiders for the low-down on their top pieces in the Levi Strauss & Co. Archives. This week, I’m putting a personal spin on the series and sharing one of my own favorites.

In the four years that I have been the historian here at Levi Strauss & Co., I have met some remarkable people with amazing stories – from a real-life Rosie the Riveter to a 1970s fashion designer who dressed celebrities in outfits made from recycled Levi’s®.

But few encounters match the surprise meeting I had just one month into my job.

It began with a phone call. On the other end of the line was Barbara Hunter Kepon, who 65 years earlier had donated one of the oldest pairs of waist overalls in our Archives, a pair named Calico that dated back to 1890.

She was going to be in San Francisco and wanted to drop by to visit the jeans. Archivist Stacia Fink and I jumped at the chance to meet Barbara, who was then 83, and her daughter, Timolin.

As a teenager living in San Gabriel, California in the late 1940s, Barbara explored the Calico Mine while camping one weekend. She discovered a room filled with jeans and took the best pair of the bunch. She patched them and wore them for a time until she noticed something interesting on the pocket and wrote to LS&Co.

As Barbara shared:

We went into the mine as far as we could without any flashlights. And as I was walking along the side, I felt cold air hit my foot. I got down on my hands and knees and opened up a little opening, and inside was a small room and it was full of jeans that had been torn and abandoned there by the miners …

I picked out the best looking pair of jeans in that pile and took them home because it was fashionable for young girls to wear jeans. I went home, washed them and wore them all the time, until one day I happened to notice letters on the back of the pocket … something about the jeans being made for over 17 years . . .

I realized that’s a lot longer than recently and so I wrote a letter to Levi’s and told them my story. I asked if they wanted me to send the jeans to them, and so I did. And the company then sent me two new pair of jeans.

When asked if she was familiar with the Levi’s® brand when she made her jeans discovery in the 1940s, Barbara replied: “Everybody knew the name Levi’s. Everyone in school was wearing them and I suppose that’s why I wanted to wear them.”

Meeting Barbara and learning how she discovered Calico is one of the highlights of my work here in the LS&Co. Archives, and Calico remains one of my favorite pieces to this day.
