DR Congo: 2 Who Criticized ‘State of Siege’ Arrested

Uphold Rights to Free Expression, Opinion; Don’t Abuse Martial Law

(Nairobi) – Two human rights defenders who held a news conference to criticize the Democratic Republic of Congo’s “state of siege” in eastern provinces have been held without charge since August 1, 2024, Human Rights Watch said today.

Jack Sinzahera, 35, one of those held, a member of the citizens’ movement Amka Congo (Wake up Congo), is a longtime activist and campaigner who advocates lifting the “state of siege” imposed in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces. Gloire Saasita, 27, also held, is a member of the Génération Positive citizens’ movement, which fights for the defense of human rights in Congo. Neither has been taken before a judge, which Congolese law requires within 48 hours of an arrest. The government should immediately release them.

“Human Rights Watch is deeply concerned for the safety of activists Jack Sinzahera and Gloire Saasita,” said Carine Kaneza Nantulya, deputy Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “Congolese authorities should release them and stop using the ‘state of siege’ to crack down on the rights to free expression and association.”

These arrests occurred at a time when armed conflict in eastern Congo has intensified as Rwandan-backed M23 continue to seize territory around the eastern city of Goma. In May 2021, President Félix Tshisekedi, who was re-elected in December 2023, declared martial law – a “state of siege” – in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces. The military has taken over civilian authority in both provinces since then, and martial law has remained in effect. Armed groups continue to attack civilians with little protection from the Congolese army despite the “state of siege.”

To 'absorb'. Just...let that word sit on your tongue and think about why it sounds the way it does.

Netanyahu continues to say Smotrich and Ben-Gvir don't represent government policy but they are saying the same thing. They want to ethnically cleanse Gaza but wrap it up nicely to sound like it's to the benefit of Palestinians and for humanitarian reasons.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is so far the only named country Israel is in talks with to accept the "voluntarily migration" of Palestinians from Gaza. Strange, because there were many calling us crazy for even suggesting relations between Israel and DRC were notable.

Apparently we were just talking out of our asses about DRC's own struggles and silent genocide having an Israeli touch.

Dan Gertler's grandfather, Moshe Schnitzer, was president of the Israel Diamond Exchange for 26 years from 1967-1993. It's the largest diamond exchange in the world and his son Shmuel Schnitzer became president after him. Gerlter himself has been in DRC since 1997 and is estimated to be worth 1.2 billion. You don't amass that kind of power & wealth in a vacuum and considering how much their family dealings contributed to Israel's growth & economy, Israel can't honestly claim ignorance. Companies in the west deny knowing their products come from sweatshops & modern say slavery all the time but they know.

Also worth noting DRC's last four presidents have all had close relations with Israel. Mobutu Sese Seko (1965-1997), Laurent-Désiré Kabila (1997-2001), Joseph Kabila (2001-2019) and Félix Tshisekedi (2019 - present). Mobutu to Joseph Kabila were guilty of serious corruption and Gertler was very close to the Kabilas. Félix Tshisekedi says he is against corruption but interestingly the validity of his recent reelection is being contested.

I've gone off the main point a little but it all needs to be said because too many are still sleeping. WAKE UP. It's a new day, literally a new year, wake up and pay attention. What promises is US backed Israel going to make to these countries so that they accept Palestinian refugees? What new deals will be struck? More than 50% of DRC's population is below the poverty line but somehow they can feasibly accept refugees? How?

Macron è andato in Congo a farsi prendere a sberle dal presidente Félix Tshisekedi.

Il primo ministro africano ha infatti rinfacciato al premier francese l'arroganza con cui l'Europa guarda all'Africa, con fare paternalistico e nascondendo le proprie malefatte.

Questo è un ottimo segno.

Le nazioni africane stanno cominciando a porsi domande su se stesse, crescendo come possibili interlocutrici nella costruzione di un mondo multipolare.

Non a caso, Russia e Cina stanno aumentando la loro influenza in questa parte di mondo, tramite accordi commerciali e progetti logistici.

Se avessimo uno straccio di classe politica decente, sfrutteremmo alla grande questi nuovi equilibri, dato che l'Africa è una sponda economica, culturale e geopolitica naturale per la nostra nazione.

Ma ho l'impressione che perderemo anche questo treno, troppo impegnati ad alimentare le guerre altrui.

Bonobos look like smallish chimpanzees, with whom they share 99.6% of their DNA. And both of these great apes share 98.7% of their DNA with humans, making them our closest living relatives.

Wild bonobos can only be found in forests south of the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They weren't recognized as a separate species until 1929. As the last great ape to be scientifically described, much remains unknown about the bonobo—including the extent of its geographic range.

Use Bonobo Zoos for leverage for Catholique L'école Board; attach Congolese Citizens to The Science Center and Catholic School Board for Immigration.
