Seokjin's hands are shaking.
It's a nervous habit of his, one so unnoticeable that you'd have to know him like the back of your hard to notice it. The only person who could possibly know him as well as that is Yoongi, his boyfriend of seven years.
Yoongi is by his shoulder, his expression carefully blank, but Seokjin can tell by his tangled fingers that Yoongi is just as nervous as him. Seokjin wants to reach out and take the younger's hand to soothe both their nerves, but they're in public and they've long since established a no PDA rule.
Not because either of them is uncomfortable with PDA, but because neither wants the harsh scrutiny of society directed at them when they're vulnerable.
Living in Seoul, South Korea means that Seokjin lives under constant judgment, especially when people learn he's gay. There are some people, like their friends, who couldn't care less about who Seokjin wants to love but the vast majority do care for some odd reason and Seokjin finds it tiring having to hide how much he loves Yoongi.
Because he does love Yoongi. Yoongi's been there for him for as long Seokjin can remember. Best friends since birth with their parents being friends and all. Of course, they weren't anymore, not after having found Seokjin kissing the cute boy from the basketball team in high school, but Yoongi had stayed by Seokjin's side despite his parents not agreeing with it. They went off to the university then and in Seokjin's junior year, he finally admitted to himself what he had always known and stopped fighting the way he felt for Yoongi. Yoongi welcomed him with open arms as they sunk to Seokjin's bedroom floor and kissed, years of emotional constipation between them.
Seven years later, Seokjin is still in love with Yoongi and Yoongi in love with him, but they've never held hands in public.
The way Yoongi trembles beside him makes Seokjin want to break their most absolute rule and reach out for his hand, but he twists his fingers together instead and ignores the urge. It's cold in November, but not cold enough to warrant Seokjin wearing his favorite parka and the matching mittens Yoongi got for him three Christmases ago. He shoves his hands into the pockets of his hoodie and waits.
It feels like they've been waiting forever. The hassle of getting an amazing lawyer, brushing up on the laws and regulations that make up family law, and the court dates. Four to be exact and each as shitty as the one before. Seokjin thought they'd lose, and the irony of it all wasn't lost on him, but after all that, they'd come out on top. Seokjin had won the case, finally receiving full custody of his nephew.
They stand in front of the orphanage Jeongguk had been forced to stay in while the court proceedings went on, but today Jeongguk is coming home. Seokjin is nervous and excited and a little scared, but he's ready for this. He and Yoongi are both ready for this.
The orphanage's front door opens and Seokjin breathes out deeply as he steps forward. Jeongguk steps onto the front step with a duffle bag over his shoulder and looking incredibly small to the world. His shoulders are sagging in a way that tells Seokjin the younger boy feels like the weight of the world is on his shoulders and Seokjin wants to do anything he can to share that weight. Yoongi is just a step behind him as Seokjin takes another step and another step and then he's walking towards Jeongguk who's noticed them by now and smiles hesitantly up at them.
Seokjin's heart thuds in his chest, short of breath as he finally stops walking. Yoongi is still beside him, arms open for Jeongguk to throw himself in them and the boy does. Seokjin's nephew flings himself into Yoongi's arm, his little body trembling as Seokjin bids the orphanage's caretaker farewell and takes the few belongings Jeongguk couldn't carry from her. She says goodbye to Jeongguk but the boy is too busy clinging to Yoongi to really notice and with that, the door is shut on them.
Yoongi stands and takes Jeongguk into his arms, cradling him to his chest while Seokjin takes the duffel bag from Jeongguk and leads them to the waiting car. Yoongi slides into the backseat with Jeongguk and Seokjin puts Jeongguk's things in the trunk, hoping that when they finally get home, Jeongguk will like the new room they decorated for him.
He really shouldn't have worried because as soon as Jeongguk sees the room, he bursts into tears and clings to Seokjin's legs, burying his face into Seokjin's thigh. Yoongi puts Jeongguk's clothes and belongings away while Seokjin manages to kneel down and pull Jeongguk properly into his arms, petting his nephew's head and whispering quiet assurances into his ear. Jeongguk moves willingly with him, silently telling his uncle that he trusts him not to harm him and to take care of Jeongguk to the best of his abilities.
And when Jeongguk pulls away to look up into Seokjin's face, all he can see is his older brother in Jeongguk's face and his sister-in-law in Jeongguk's movements. The pain from their deaths is still fresh enough that Seokjin has to blink away tears of his own as something awful grips his heart, but he knows that neither Jeongguk nor Yoongi, who is quietly watching them, would judge him for this.
Jeongguk cups Seokjin's face and stares for a little while longer as the feeling in Seokjin's chest only strengthens by tenfold. Tears are streaming down his face now and Jeongguk thumbs them away, crying tears of his own as Seokjin grips onto him a little tighter. Yoongi curves himself around Seokjin's back and tangles his fingers into Jeongguk's soft black hair.
The three of them stay like that for a little while longer until Yoongi's pulling away to order takeout and clean up the kitchen and living room for a little while. Seokjin continues to hold onto Jeongguk until he realizes that his nephew has fallen asleep.
With a fond smile, Seokjin tucks Jeongguk into the new bed he and Yoongi had picked out last week and leaves the boy's bedroom door open as he walks down the stairs and wedges himself in between the back of the couch and Yoongi. Yoongi groans and scoots over to make room for the elder, but Seokjin pulls him back into his embrace soon after anyway so there was really no need for Yoongi to have moved in the first place. Seokjin tucks his chin over Yoongi's head and nestles into his boyfriend's warmth, sagging into the couch cushions.
They don't get to enjoy their quiet moment for long because the delivery boy shows up soon after that and Yoongi climbs back upstairs to wake up Jeongguk from his nap. They eat at the dining table and when Jeongguk asks for seconds, Seokjin is more than happy to serve him another plate.
Yoongi breaks out his secret stash of cola and gives a little bit to Jeongguk before giving him water again. Jeongguk exchanges a delighted smile when Seokjin pretends to not have noticed the soda and Yoongi cackles evilly with glee. Seokjin rolls his eyes and continues to eat, swiping the can of cola out of Yoongi's hands underneath the table and bringing it up to his lips to take a swig from it. When he lowers the can, Yoongi is laughing harder than ever before as Jeongguk stares at him with wide, admiring eyes.
Dinner goes on smoothly after that and Seokjin's heart flutters when Jeongguk grabs a napkin and uses it to wipe soy sauce away from the corner of Yoongi's mouth. Yoongi retaliates by pulling Jeongguk into his lap and attacking him with tickles, making the young boy burst into a loud round of giggles. Seokjin shakes his head but continues to watch them fondly, a little sad when dinner comes to an end and Yoongi starts to clean up.
They migrate to the living room for a little while after that but when Jeongguk ends up falling asleep slumped over the coffee table, Seokjin picks his nephew up and takes him up to his room, tucking Jeongguk into bed again. Yoongi comes in after him to plug in the night light he ordered off Amazon for it's changing colors and pecks Jeongguk's forehead before disappearing into the hallway. Seokjin pushes Jeongguk's hair out of his face and kisses him on the tip of his nose, murmuring a quiet goodnight to his adopted son.
In bed with Yoongi a few minutes later, Seokjin spreads out across the mattress and wraps himself around his boyfriend. Yoongi turns to face him, hands in Seokjin's hair as they stare into one another's eyes. Their bedroom door is wide open so neither of them notices when Jeongguk enters their room, both jumping when he tugs on the bottom of their duvet.
Seokjin looks up to meet his wide eyes that wordlessly plead with him to let Jeongguk sleep with them tonight. He's helpless to the gaze and lifts the covers up, inviting Jeongguk in.
Jeongguk nuzzles his way in between the two men, smiling when both Seokjin and Yoongi curve their arms around him. It's quiet in the bedroom now and it doesn't take long for Jeongguk to fall asleep again. Seokjin watches him for a while, smiling as Yoongi begins to snore quietly.
The only one awake in the house is Seokjin now and he isn't sure what to feel as he watches his boyfriend and his new son sleep wrapped up around each other and curled against him.
His heart thuds into his chest when he realizes that despite Jeongguk not being biologically theirs, he is practically their son now and thus making him their first child.
First child because a year and a half later, they take in Taehyung, Jeongguk's friend from school who got taken away from his father and ended up in Seokjin and Yoongi's care instead.
