Throughout human history, people have always been fascinated by art. It all started with painting detailed pictures on cave walls and crafting small statues and symbols on rocks.

Rick Genest aka Zombie Boy was an artist, actor, model and musician. He was known for his skeleton tattoos, which earned him the Guinness world record for the most tattoos of human bones, having 139. He also held the record for the most tattoos of insects, having 176, but the record was surpassed by Joshua Thornton in November of 2018. He worked in multiple sideshows and freak shows in Canada. Not long after starting his face tattoos, he was revealed to the world in Novemeber of 2006 in a post on BME's ModBlog. In March of 2008 he gave his first interview. By this time, his tattoos were mostly finished and in the interview, he made it clear that he preferred the nickname Zombie, as opposed to Skull Boy which some called him at the time After gaining exposure, he was featured in Bizarre magazine in June of 2008. He made a small appearnce in the movie, Carny. He was rediscovered in 2010 by Marc Quinn while working with the sideshow Alive on the Inside, at Carnivále Lune Bleue As a model, Rick was featured in Thierry Mugler's Autumn/Winter collection, where he headlined it on the brand's website. Rick's involvement and encouragement from Lady Gaga, resulted in the menswear show, which was not originally planned. Later, with Lady Gaga, he was a part of the 2011 women's Autumn/Winter collection. In February of 2011, Rick once again paired up with Lady Gaga for the video for her song Born This Way. In September of 2012, Rick became the face of Jay Z's Rocawear fashion relaunch in Europe. He was cast as the character Foreman in the movie 47 Ronin, which starred Keanu Reeves, but was mostly edited out of the final version. In 2015, he worked on an album with former Rob Zombie guitarist and current Scum of the Earth guitarist and vocalist, Mike Riggs. They released a video called "Zombie Boy 666 Medley" which consisted of samples from 6 songs which were to be on the album There is a 11.5 foot tall sculpture of Rick called Self Conscious Gene, which is in the Science Museum in London. #bodymod #bodymods #bodymodification #bodymodifications #advancedbodymodification #advancedbodymodifications #extremebodymodification #extremebodymodifications #tattoos #zombieboy https://www.instagram.com/p/B8UOIE-lj-8/?igshid=9vqi3twaexkj

Julia Gnuse aka The Illustrated Lady had 95% of her body tattooed and held the Guinness record for the most tattooed woman in the world. In her 30s, she was diagnosed with Porphyria, a condition that causes the skin to blister from sunlight. Julia started getting tattooed to cover up the scars caused by the blisters. A friend of hers who was a plastic surgeon, suggested that she get tattooed in a pale skin tone similar to the scars, which ultimately did not work out. Instead she opted for colorful tattoos including her favorite cartoons, actors and even a self portrait. She appeared on multiple TV shows including Guinness, Ripley's Believe it or Not and Larry King. She played a small role in Aerosmith's video for their song, Pink. A statue of her is in the Guinness museum in Japan. Julia worked in several industries, but her favorite was her own business, Sweet Temptations where she sold homemade cookies and pies for nearly 10 years. She died on August 11th of 2016 at 61 years old. Rest in peace, Julia Gnuse. #juliagnuse #theillustratedlady #tattoos #bodymod #bodymods #bodymodification #bodymodifications #advancedbodymodification #advancedbodymodifications #extremebodymodification #extremebodymodifications #art #bodyart https://www.instagram.com/p/BswhwoMlmO2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d3ketifvo1k1

There are multiple techniques that can be used for scarification. 1. Strike branding- a heated piece of netal is used to create the design 2. Cold branding- This is a rare method, but is done just like strike branfing except the branding tool is cooled to a very low temperature using liquid nitrogen. 3. Cutting,- a scalpel is usually used to cut designs into the skin. One cutting technique is called ink rubbing, where tattoo ink is rubbed into the cuts. As the cut heals, most of the tattoo ink stays in the skin, resulting in the same basic effect as a tattoo. 4. Electrocautery- This method uses an elctrosurgical tool to cut and cauterize the skin. Sparks jump from the tool to the skin, causing it to vaporize. This way is more precise because depth and what damage is done to the skin can be regulated, unlike traditional branding where the tissue is damaged. With electrocautery, the skin is vaporized so quickly that very minimal damage is done to the surrounding skin. This also leads to less pain and healing time. 5. Skin removal/skinning- uUsing single line cuts, the skin is sliced and peeled off. Scars created from this method have varying textures, which needs an experienced scarification artist and strict aftercare. #modification #bodymodification #advancedbodymodification #extremebodymodification #scarification #branding #electrocauterybranding #art #bodyart https://www.instagram.com/p/BoDxnfGgVsr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ej06oq5996vt

Even though the exact origins of neck stretching is unknown, historians have been able to date it back to 11th century Southeast Asia. An exact reason for the practice is still unknown. One of the most known beliefs is that villagers wore them to protect themselves against tiger attacks, which are more likely to be directed towards the neck. Another claim is that it served as a way to protect women from being kidnapped by rival tribes by giving them a less appealing look. Unlike this legend, the opposite stands today, as it is considered beautiful in Myanmar and other locations. In the Ndebele tribe of Africa, women wear brass and copper rings, not only around their necks, but around their legs and arms too. The rings are given to the women by their husbands and are a sign of faithfulness. At one point, the rings were only removed once they had died, but today they aren't always worn permanently. At only 5 years old, girls in the Karen/Kayan and Padaung tribes of Myanmar are given their first set of rings. These rings tend to way around 4 and a half pounds and more are added over time. Sometimes the rings are removed altogether so they can be replaced with thicker ones. Many women enjoy having their rings changed since it gives them the chance to see their progress. Although it is commonly called "neck stretching", it does not actually stretch the neck. The weight of the rings actually pushes down on the collarbones. The reason why some tribes start this at such an early age is because the bones are more flexible making the process easier and also resulting in less pain. There's more information I could post, but I'm getting tired of typing lol I'll cover more on this later. #modification #bodymodification #advancedbodymodification #extremebodymodification #culturalbodymodification #tribalbodymodification #art #bodyart https://www.instagram.com/p/BoPuqvmgGCu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18kdwkza98vdy

While there are numerous people who participate in scarification in other cultures, it is mostly done in a few tribes in Africa and Sepik River tribes in Papua. Amongst these tribes, it is considered an initiation ceremony for men. To achieve this rite of passage, men take part in ceremonies that can last for weeks. It can include public humiliation and is carried out by elders in the tribe. In Papua New Guinean legend, it is believed that humans evolved from alligators from the Sepik River, hence their scarification patterns which resembles alligator skin. To achieve this look, the wounds are packed with clay, ash etc. In South Sadan, scarification is also practiced by a nomadic tribe called the Dinka. The Dinka boys are scarred with 3 or 4 lines in their forehead for the resemblance of manhood, while Dinka girls show beauty with lines across their faces. In these rituals, it is considered cowardly to cry. #scarification #rituals #bodymodification #advancedbodymodification #extremebodymodification #tribalbodymodification #tribalscarification #art #bodyart https://www.instagram.com/p/BoI3u1AnMfG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ggx7b2h1b2jj

Lip stretching started over 10,000 years ago. It was practiced by indeginous tribes in Africa, South America, Europe and a few tribes from the Amazon rain forest. Today, it is common with the Mursi tribe in Southwestern Ethiopia. Women go through this process by choice, before they are married. The stretching starts with a single piercing, which is stretched with a small stick. Over time, bigger sticks are used, which is eventually replaced with a clay disc. The size of the disc is increased until they believe the lip cannot be stretched further. It is still unclear as to how it started. One theory suggests that it started as a way to cause intentional disfigurement to the women to make them less attractive to slave traders. Others believe that the size of the disc indicated the power of the tribe and gave their women a better chance of finding a wealthy spouse. #modification #bodymodification #advancedbodymodification #extremebodymodification #lipstretching #stretchedlips #culturalmodification #culturalbodymodification #tribalmodification #tribalbodymodification #art #bodyart https://www.instagram.com/p/BoIg7fTn94j/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1hys2k2qal2m2

Kala Kaiwi holds the Guinness world record for the biggest non surgically stretched ear lobes. His earlobes are 109 mm or 4.29 inches. While there are others whose are bigger, Kala is the latest person to be verified by Guinness. Kala is from Hawaii, where he owns a tattoo and piercing shop. In addition to stretched earlobes, he has tattoos, which cover 75% of his body, piercings, subdermal and transdermal implants, a tattooed eye and a split tongue. Kala did the majority of his modifications himself. #bodymod #bodymods #bodymodification #bodymodifications #advancedbodymodification #advancedbodymodifications #extremebodymodification #exyremebodymodifications #transdermalimplants #subdermalimplants #piercings #bodypiercings #art #bodyart #tattoos #tattooedeyes #stretchedears https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw0tud8lQJV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=t13m7hmvoqhj
