here’s a summary of the show/manwha if you never watched/read it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraordinary_You
it’s set post aco/sf and the longer nesta settles into her newfound life of happiness the weirder she feels. sometimes it’s like she doesn’t know who she is anymore, and her actions don’t line up with her values, and every now and then she gets a little voice in her head saying “remember how these people made you feel like shit? why did you forget that so quickly? why are you friends with these people?” and it’s like constant character dissonance for her. sometimes she remembers the hurtful things cassian has said to her and it hurts all over again, but she doesn’t know how to bring it up to him—she can’t bring it up to him, because it’s all supposed to be swept under the rug. she’s supposed to be happy. it’s just a coincidence that her happiness is carefully adjusted to feysand’s happiness.
fast forward and she learns the reason that none of her thoughts and actions make sense is because she’s a book character stuck in a shitty book series. and she’s not even the main character! she’s just a side character who exists for the gratification of the other main characters, a scapegoat for their actions and emotions. and every time a new scene begins, all her free will and thoughts are banished so she can play this new role of loving sister, loving mate, whatever. in between scenes is the only time she has free will and can do/say whatever she wants, but none of her actions leave an impact because everything is forgotten once the next scene begins. she can’t even tell cassian how she honestly feels about him because anything that happens off page is wiped away on page.
lucien can be the lee dohwa character that’s also sentient and aware of his role in the books, and together he and nesta can be like hey this story fucking sucksss. he doesn’t know when his story will be written, who he’ll end up with, whether elain will choose him or azriel, etc. he knows he likes elain, and he knows it isnt of his own free will but the writer’s, and he knows elain is more likely to end up with the ic member azriel than him because author’s favoritism. but he still wants to try to win her over because he doesn’t want to be stuck as the second male lead. nesta and lucien both want to change the story by reclaiming their agency, getting control over their love lives, getting out of the trash hole that their characters have been thrown into.
and then idk what happens next. maybe nesta can meet a cute background character and dump cassian for him. and the whole time cassian is more and more confused why his mate is pulling away from him between the scenes because that’s not how the written story is supposed to go.
once again i am thinking of an extraordinary you fic set in-verse in the acotar world,,,it would be way too on the nose and breaking the fourth wall but that’s what would make it perfect

Extraordinary You (Korean drama)
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, High School
Synopsis:(from http://asianwiki.com/Extraordinary_You) Eun Dan-O (Kim Hye-Yoon) is a student at a prestigious high school. Her family is wealthy, but Eun Dan-O has a heart disease. Her fiance Baek Kyung (Lee Jae-Wook) attends the same prestigious high school. She likes him a lot, but he does not like her at all. Suddenly, Eun Dan-O has short-term memory loss and she can see what will happen in the near future. She gets confused by her symptoms. Then, Jinmiche, from the school cafeteria, tells Eun Dan-O that she is a character in the comic "Secret" like everybody else there. Eun Dan-O learns that her character is not even a main character, but rather an extra and she doesn't have much time to live. Eun Dan-O is stunned, but she decides she wants to find her own true first love and not someone written by the comic writer. One day, she falls down the school stairs. She feels her back touch the back of another student, among a group of male students. Her heart suddenly starts to flutter. Eun Dan-O wants to find the male student who made her heart flutter. She eventually finds the student (Ro Woon) and he is her classmate. He is a character that doesn't have a name. They get close and Eun Dan-O names him "Ha-Roo."
My thoughts: I’m not a fan of high-school drama but this was so highly praised on Tumblr so I decided to watch it. I enjoyed the meta-references to high school drama and manhwa tropes. The classes that the students attend also make references to reality, existentialism and identity (e.g. the classes in Art, Music and later in philosophy). I especially remembered the scene where the Art teacher questioned whether the object in the painting was real on its own right or the object in life. The actresses and actors were also refreshingly good, managing to convey the disjoint between their storybook character and self-aware character. I enjoyed it so much that I may even watch it again, especially the first half. I fast-forwarded a lot of the second half as it dwelled too much on the storyline between Dan Oh and Kyung, which I found boring. There were many memorable scenes in the drama. The side characters were also fun to watch, especially Do Hwa. So, all in all, a highly recommended drama.

Extraordinary You EP3 Review/July found by chance
There is a hitch in Dan Oh man search. Just as she found out her mysterious man, she was transported by the plot to the hospital again, much to her dismal.
And she awakens the consciousness of the second lead of the manhwa, Do Hwa. This EP continues its hilarious trend of Do Hwa dealing with his new found consciousness, as well as Dan Oh trying to awaken her man, No. 13 memories.
Aside from Kim Hye Yoon outstanding performance, Jung Goon Joo has a outstanding performance as Do Hwa. On stage, Do Hwa is supposed to be a carbon copy of Hanazawa Rui from Boys over Flowers, but when his consciousness is awaken, he has another side, which includes a hint of awkwardness and mischievousness.

Live recap: https://twitter.com/Joansallen/status/1186092424126353415
Let’s start on Do Hwa shall we?
Jung Goon Joo managed to elevate his character. When Do Hwa starts to gain awareness, his character became different vs stage. He appears mischievous, either when he smiles or teasing Dan Oh for checking out backs of High School boys. When Do Hwa is on “Stage” - he is serious yet gentle, and shows none of these characteristics. Dan Oh and him carried a weird chemistry which can neither be categorised as romantic or adversary - but that chemistry exists as they interact. Despite their different characters it made this episode a fun watch.
It is also fun to see him gaining awareness and getting overwhelmed about it, on him unable to control his own actions,
And worst of all finding roses surrounding his crush
Sorry kid At least Dan Oh has time to digest. You dont. Blame Dan Oh
Anyway Jung Goon Joo comedic chops is so great here. He carried the comedy part so great, that his pain is the audience comedy
But can I say it again and again how much I enjoy the growing relationship between her and Do Hwa. Her snips are now heard by him and at least Dan Oh is not so lonely, plus Do Hwa reactions is just worth it.
Dan Oh, despite being transported to Stage multiple times, tried her best to talk to Number 13, before finding an opportunity in that magical like garden, and it follows up with a romantically shot interlude at the medic room.
And unfortunately for Dan Oh, it seems like he does not remember her despite multiple reminders from Dan Oh. Yet
But behind all these actions, it’s all due to Dan Oh want to control her own destiny, choosing her own fate. One poignant scene was that despite her scheming and asking for No.13 help to prevent her walking into the sea (after Baek Kyung rejection), she failed to control her fate, which leads her to a massive breakdown after unsuccessfully piling rocks.
Despair
Her strike down of “Please let Baek Kyung to like me” to “I want to live” is such a statement about this drama. Changing “Please” to “I” is an indication of who she wants to be in control - herself.
She despairs when Number 13 came and after she expresses her disappointment, she leaves. Number 13 looks at the stones and slowly piling up, managing to put the fate stone on top. Foreshadowing indeed.
There are so many strengths about this drama. A great cast, fabulous cinematography and lightening, strong script and directing. They all help to support the heart and soul of this drama which is Dan Oh. A character who will never give up despite the writer’s intention is against her. A character who smiles despite all the tears shed for injustice and unfairness to her character.
Food for thoughts
And perhaps this talk of changing fate/destiny, is a metaphor for real life. Dan Oh said if she manage to change the stage she will manage to change her life. Perhaps we could made significant changes to life by changing our Stage. Of course, we will need to awake our consciousness so we could remember both Stage and Shadow for this to work.

"Lee Do Hwa, if you use your own POV to view the world, then you are the main character" - Dan Oh #Extraordinaryyou

Extraordinary you EP 2 review/July Found by Chance
This episode deals with Dan Oh realising she is an extra character, crapping on illogical choices the writer made, and exploring how she could break out of her character’s destiny (in a hilarious way).
It’s a really well done episode, it balanced between the drama poking fun at shojo tropes, great performance from Kim Hye Yoon whom can change from a meek to hilarious character after the stage ends, and (spoiler!) worthy of being a romantic lead, and most of all, subtly exploring the subject of free will.
Asian wiki: http://asianwiki.com/Extraordinary_You
Live recap: https://twitter.com/Joansallen/status/1186092424126353415
This episode really pokes and made a satire of shojo romance tropes. These include:
1) Male lead making female lead as an errand girl after she ruined his expensive clothes
2) Sparkles/light or roses appears on lead characters (which annoys Dan Oh to no end)
3) More minorish, but anyone notice she wore rather frilly dress when she is not in control?
4) Unable to curse (beautiful petals/musical notes will came out of her mouth if she does)
5) Female lead being locked in a room by bullies
Free will
The lack of control of the characters own destiny is highlighted in a hilarious sequence of strawberry milk where her will is thwarted
Or the fact that she is unable to change the self portrait scene
Dan Oh is someone whose free will is constantly thwarted. As a sickly child she can’t simply move anywhere or run freely like any child. She justifiably feels robbed when she realises the reason for her disability was simply due to the whim of the author - to highlight the goodness of the female lead and to add extra pages to the manhwa.
In one of the most poignant scenes in the episode, after a scene where she is forced to pine after Baek Kyung, she said:
“My fate belongs to me.”
“ Does not being aware is more happier than being aware? “
“ No, I like the current me more, I just need to change the things that makes me sad “
She is optimistic despite her illness. Which is why she is the driving force for this show. She set to change things despite such unfortunate things happen to her. And when she realises that a person appearance that’s not part of the initial script, she sought to find him, and that includes a hilarious back search sequence, where our heroine openly perverts and look for her man.
Our extra did eventually find her man at the end of the episode whcih is gorgeously shot, complete with a half dry umbrella and red flowers.
Rating: 9/10 stars
