The Ultimate Live TV Streaming Services Guide - Summer 2017 Edition

Still on cable TV and wanting to cancel? Read onward!

I was originally going to update my review of PS Vue, but with Sony announcing this month that they will be getting rid of the “Slim” packages, I decided to look at my options more closely. I will share all my research with you here as I decide whether or not to move my family on from PS Vue.

I’ll start with the basics and then work my way to the live streaming options.

What Is a Streaming Service?

We’ll start with the basics. What is a streaming service? A streaming service or OTT (an abbreviation for “over-the-top”) refers to TV services that go over the internet, in contrast to traditional cable/satellite television services. The term can refer to standalone services like HBO NOW or multichannel services like Playstation Vue. The most well known and longest running streaming services are Netflix and Hulu, both streaming on-demand content since 2007.

For live TV, the oldest service is Sling TV, offering a set of live channels to stream since 2015. I was an early adopter of Sling looking to remove my cable TV subscription while still catching some live TV, but I have since moved on. Removing cable/satellite TV subscription is referred to as “cord cutting” (even though you still need the cord for your internet connection, but I digress). There is a segment of those who are “cord nevers,” those who have never had cable TV service at all. Stats on these can be found here.

But the growing segment of these “cord cutters” still want a live TV option (sports fans like me are the biggest group wanting to ditch their cable bill while still being able to view live sporting events). The last year I had cable TV (early 2015), I paid about $125/month for whatever tier of channels had ESPN and an HD DVR. No premium movie channels, nothing special. So I jumped at the chance to get my sports a different, cheaper way.

When I first cut the cord, there was only Sling TV. Now there are a ton to choose from.

What do I need to stream live TV?

Easy enough, most people reading this probably already have what is needed: something to view the service on, a strong internet connection, and a credit card. The something to view it on can be as simple as a smartphone, but if you are like me, you want a streaming device like an Amazon Fire TV/Fire Stick, Roku, or Apple TV hooked up to your TV.

For the internet connection, two things you want to look at: download speed and data cap.

I will say, I recommend a robust internet connection for streaming live TV. On-demand services like Netflix and Hulu (the plain one) recommend 5-6 megabytes per second (mbps) down. On Sling TV’s FAQ, they say 5 mbps is good for a single stream but recommend 25 mbps for households with multiple devices. I’m using a local provider that gives me up to 50 mbps down (although I frequently test it at as high as 70 mbps). This seems adequate enough for my family’s usage.

If you are also into online gaming, you may want to look at higher speed options. Just be careful though, if you are in this to save money but up your internet to a ridiculous speed you may end up not saving any money at all. Most providers offer a pretty good introductory rate on their middle-tier internet, which works for most people.

As for data caps, internet providers charge overages if a user goes above a certain amount of data usage. My provider and the industry standard right now is 1 terabyte (tb). I’ve tracked my family’s usage since my provider instituted the hard cap in October. We don’t do a lot of gaming online, but we stream a lot between me, my wife, and two kids and the highest usage we’ve had so far is 650 gigabytes (gb), or a little more than two-thirds of our data limit. We average about 450 gb of usage per month.

Check with your service provider to see what your data cap is. Most providers list it in their FAQs and have easy ways to track usage.

What are the live TV streaming options?

There are four major players in the live streaming game: DirecTV NOW, Hulu with Live TV, Playstation Vue, and Sling TV. There are numerous others like fuboTV (who first specialized in soccer coverage but has since expanded to other content) and YouTube TV (who is only available in five metropolitan areas so far), but the four mentioned earlier are probably the most complete and widest available.

Most services, especially the four big ones that I’m looking at, have no contract or long-term commitment and offer a week free trial period. For DirecTV NOW and Hulu with Live TV, I have gotten offers for one month free trial, so look out for those in your email box. It’s an easy way to try it out after reading this thing and see what best works for you.

I made a spreadsheet with some things that I find important in these services. ��Pricing and channel count is important. I’m a sports fan, so I need to know the available sports channels included in the packages. I also don’t catch some things live so I think that recording ability (on cloud DVR) is important. Also, I do enjoy some shows on the premium channels, so that’s good to know. I gathered some of that info. Here are some of the highlights:

I went over the low end and high end of pricing because I’m in this thing to save some money. But I also want value in that price tag, so I included the starting point as far as offered channels. Recording is important, so I have a column for if cloud DVR is offered and what the additional rate is for that if any. I also included a list of the sports and premiums each offers.

There’s a little something for everyone with each service. They have a majority of the same channels, so it really depends on if one of these services offers something slightly different than the other or depends on what type of features it can offer.

Example: if you are into international content, Sling TV is the only one that offers international channels (the pricing I included in that spreadsheet above for Sling TV does not include any of the international programming options, but they are usually $5 per package). So while Sling TV offers those options, a service like say PS Vue does not.

Or another example, if you are looking to set up recordings of your shows, DirecTV NOW would currently not be an option for you since they don’t offer cloud DVR (although word is they are working on it). All the other services offer cloud DVR in some capacity, with PS Vue offering the most extensive. With Hulu with Live TV service, their basic package also gives you access to their massive on-demand library (and it is massive because it is owned and run by three of the four major TV broadcast networks). So that does alleviate some of that limited DVR option.

Lost yet? Still don’t know what works best? Well, I extended my spreadsheet and go over the best features of each service as well as their biggest drawbacks:

So for an Amazon Fire TV user sports fan who wants to record things, Hulu with Live TV probably won’t work for me (it is currently only available on Apple TV, Chromecast, and XBox One as far as TV hookups and iOS and Android devices as well. So while I can use it on my iPhone and iPad, I can’t use it on Amazon Fire TV yet). Which is a shame because I really liked demoing the UI on the iPhone and loved the service when I tried the demo out.

DirecTV NOW has the Viacom channels that PS Vue lost a few months ago, but has no DVR and won’t for at least another year. So they are out. And we had a bad buffering experience for the majority of when we had Sling TV at our house, so while in concept having all those options to customize the channel lineup is cool, probably won’t be able to convince the wife to go back to Sling any time soon.

So I guess the decision for me is pretty easy.

While I hate that the price is going up $10 (right now we have the “Slim Core” package and were only paying $35/month for all the sports channels I wanted, in three months the price goes to $45/month and they drop the “Slim” from the package title), Playstation Vue would probably still be the best choice for me right now. I love the recording capability (even though it says recordings are only available for 28 days, I still have some recording from September that I’m able to view). It has all the channels I want (outside of the Viacom ones, but I’ve lived without them for several months with not much issue). And it is so smooth on my Amazon Fire TV with very little buffering issues.

Now, once Hulu with Live TV comes to Amazon Fire...well, I might be converting.
