#expresses anti-war sentiment on behalf of the band and the album so I could breathe a sigh of relief there

They are! One of the better folk metal bands, one of the few like Moonsorrow that take the genre seriously (don’t get me wrong, I also like my cheesy Turisas style stuff). Their earlier albums are lively rock ‘em sock ‘em stuff, their later ones have more experimental prog-black leanings. I got into a couple of albums of theirs in high school and have just forgotten to listen to the rest!

Goi, Rode, Goi is generally considered their best album, try the title track or V Tsepiakh Drevney Tainy. Na Moey Zemle is also a favourite of mine because of the fantastic Heidevolk feature at the end (it’s a long song with lots of guests). Off of the earlier album Ot Serdca k Nebu, you could check out Pokrovi Nebesnogo Starca for something a bit more raucous. Off of the later album Yav’, the song Chado Indigo is a charming mercurial fairy story of a song. The single flute line around the ¾ mark gets me every time.

Basically, they’ve got something for everyone! If you like power metal, slow ballads, death metal, black metal, classic folk, prog or atmospheric, even just acoustic folk, they’ve got it somewhere in their discography. I’m excited to get into their other stuff
