Virtual Tours and Experiential Learning: Making Education More Relevant and Meaningful
Do you remember those days in school when you sat in a classroom, reading from textbooks or listening to lectures, longing for something more exciting and hands-on? Well, thanks to the wonders of technology, education is being revolutionized by virtual tours and experiential learning, giving students a taste of adventure and bringing subjects to life like never before.
Modern technology has revolutionized significant aspects of our lives in this digital age, and education is no exception. As a result, traditional classroom learning is increasingly being complemented, and sometimes even replaced, by virtual experiences that provide students with immersive and interactive learning opportunities.
One such innovation is the concept of virtual tours, which allows students to explore places, events, and scenarios without leaving the comfort of their classrooms. These virtual tours not only make education more accessible but also enhance its relevance and meaning by offering experiential learning opportunities. In this article, we will discuss how virtual tours and experiential learning are making education more relevant.
Tumblr media
What are virtual tours?
Imagine being transported to the heart of ancient Egypt, standing in awe as you explore the majestic pyramids, feeling the heat of the desert wind on your face. Or picture yourself diving into the ocean’s depths, swimming alongside vibrant coral reefs and exotic marine creatures. These are just a glimpse of what virtual tours can offer. By utilizing virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) technologies, students can now experience places, events, and scenarios that were once confined to the pages of textbooks.
Virtual tours are digital simulations or recreations of real-world environments using virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), or 360-degree panoramic imaging. They allow students to explore locations, historical sites, museums, or distant planets in a virtual space. By immersing themselves in these virtual environments, students can gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.
Their ability to transcend physical boundaries makes virtual tours even more appealing. No longer limited by distance, cost, or logistical constraints, students can travel to any corner of the world, and beyond, with just a few clicks. For example, a school in a rural area can take a virtual field trip to a renowned museum in a bustling city. In addition, students who have never left their hometowns can explore cultures, environments, and perspectives from across the globe. This newfound accessibility democratizes education, ensuring all students have equal opportunities to broaden their horizons and expand their knowledge.
Advantages of Virtual Tours and Experiential Learning
One of the significant advantages of VR field trips is the ability to transcend physical and geographical limitations. Students can visit inaccessible places due to distance, travel expenses, and safety. For example, a class studying geography can see the ruins of ancient civilizations in their comfort. Similarly, a biology class can explore the depths of the Great Barrier Reef, observing marine life and ecosystems up close. These virtual experiences enable students to explore the world beyond their immediate surroundings, broadening their perspectives and fostering a sense of global awareness.
What is experiential learning?
On the other hand, experiential learning, a pedagogical approach emphasizing hands-on experiences and reflection, is a natural fit for virtual tours. Instead of merely reading or listening to information, students actively engage with the subject matter, which enhances their comprehension and retention. By interacting with virtual environments, students can manipulate objects, perform experiments, solve puzzles, and engage in simulations that replicate real-world scenarios. This hands-on approach enables them to apply theoretical concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and make connections between different areas of knowledge without any hassle.
Making Education More Relevant and Meaningful
Moreover, virtual tours can cater to various learning styles, accommodating visual and auditory learners. Visual learners benefit from the rich visual representation of virtual environments, while auditory learners can engage with accompanying audio guides or interactive discussions. The multi-sensory nature of virtual tours provides a holistic learning experience catering to the diverse needs of students.
Virtual tours also offer the flexibility of self-paced learning. Students can navigate the virtual environment quickly, pausing, rewinding, or revisiting sections as needed. This personalized approach allows students to delve deeper into topics of interest or spend more time on challenging concepts. It empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey and encourages independent exploration.
Furthermore, virtual tours can foster collaboration and social learning. With the integration of online platforms and communication tools, students can engage in group discussions, collaborate on projects, and share their experiences with peers. This collaborative aspect encourages peer-to-peer learning, critical thinking, and the exchange of diverse perspectives.
VR is making an impact on the education system
In conclusion, Virtual Tours and Experiential Learning are revolutionizing education, making it more relevant and meaningful for students worldwide. Through the power of technology, virtual tours transport students to places and experiences that were once out of reach, fostering a deep sense of engagement and understanding. Students become active learners by participating in virtual environments, developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
The accessibility, flexibility, and personalized nature of virtual tours cater to diverse learning styles and empower students to take ownership of their education. While virtual tours may not wholly replace real-world experiences, they enhance education by providing unique opportunities for exploration, collaboration, and global connections. As we embrace the possibilities of virtual tours and experiential learning, we pave the way for a new era of education that is immersive, inspiring, and genuinely transformative.

Join Eyewitness Palestine on Wednesday, March 27th at 12PM ET for our Live from Lyd webinar, featuring a special virtual delegation led by Tamer Nafar (see interview below with EP staff member Moureen), who will take us around Lyd on a custom tour of the city. Lyd, like many Palestinian cities, is an ancient city that's been home to multiple civilizations over its 5,000-year history. It was the site of one of the most grueling massacres of the Nakba and remains haunted by the injustices brought on to it. Today, the community of Lyd--one of the few cities with an integrated Palestinian and zionist population--is marred by addiction and gun violence. We'll hear from Lyd residents about the resilience and struggles they face in the community.
By Moureen Kaki
Tamer Nafar wears many creative hats—he’s a hip-hop artist, a screenwriter, and actor. Nafar is probably most well known as a member and founder of the first and still-leading Palestinian rap band, DAM. Readers should know that the Son of Palestinian Hip-Hop doesn't give very many interviews. He says what he needs to say through his arts: "I chose hip-hop because it gives me a verse of 64 lines," he says. Nafar and the band have released well over 100 songs through single-releases and three albums. They primarily rap in Arabic but will often integrate English and Hebrew. They’re not just known for their music, though, but the resistance-nature of their work. DAM’s music is riddled with themes of Palestinian identity, resistance, and culture. According to Nafar, the band’s founder, the music itself is less a form of resistance and more “resistance-adjacent.”
"Well, nowadays when you have more than 30,000 people killed and art is not stopping it, I'd say that art's role is documenting. I don't think it rescues lives, but I think it's documenting--it's the soundtrack of a revolution. I try to document my life and the lives of Palestinians like me. When you say 'Palestine,' people think of Gaza or the West Bank, but not a lot of people understand what life is like for Palestinians who have an Israeli ID, so I took the initiative to document us. Art is a medicine, but like Advil. It's a certain kind of medicine. It can help but it cannot cure. But to create real change is an economic thing, a power thing, it's a militant thing and lobbying this. This is where change happens. If revolution were a movie, I think art would be mentioned in the credits, not as the main force of change."
If Nafar is right and the arts are indeed more of a method of documentation than resistance, then it might be fair to call Nafar a sort-of experiential historian, too. Beyond the work of DAM, his solo work and film experience tell the many stories of Palestinians in Lyd and beyond. Nafar stars in Junction 48, for which he also did the screenwriting. Junction 48 tells the story of Palestinian rapper from Lyd who’s trying to “make it” in the industry, crossed with the unique struggle of being treated like an outsider in your own homeland, as all Palestinians are treated in Lyd by the Israeli majority. It incorporates challenges that are unique to Lyd: identity crisis and confusion, gun violence, and drug trade and addiction. Those familiar with Nafar personally would be forgiven for thinking the story was loosely based on his own life as a Lyd-based Palestinian rapper. But the film captures a narrative much bigger than any one person. It tells Lyd's unique story of the generational consequences of Zionism in Palestine.
In a different world, one in which Palestine was never colonized, Nafar would have likely never been a Lyd resident. His father's family fled there in 1948 when they were exiled from Yaffa by Zionist militias. They were supposed to leave for Jordan but found what they thought would be temporary refuge in Lyd. The family stayed and eventually, Nafar was born into the Lyd scene. Nafar succinctly and concisely defined Lyd and its possibilities: "[Lyd] would have been the best, most beautiful salad in the world if the chef weren't racist." The effects of that kind of systemic racism are apparent in Lyd's massive drug market and related gun violence. Its history and socio-economic problems often compared with the systemic destruction of Black American communities throughout the United States. Nafar, like many others, has lost community members, including his cousin, to gun violence.
On top of the gang-related violence in Lyd, Palestinians are doubly threatened by armed settlers and the state. Because of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, tensions are particularly high in the mixed Palestinian-Jewish city. Nafar says that the current situation reminds him of 2021, when Occupation Forces attacked Gaza during the Great Return March. But coupled with the increased rise of the extreme Israeli right-wing and power of settlers this time, he says, feels slightly different, "you feel it with the silence. Something that is not tangible. We're not used to the silence." While the situation remains grim, Nafar says that there's only one way for him to find solace.
"With what is happening now in Gaza and the way they managed to silence the Palestinians in Israel, and with the rise of the extreme [Israeli] right-wing, and me losing my cousin, I'm too emotional right now to give you a thoughtful message for good or bad. I know that people want a happy, optimistic view, but our comfort now is just acknowledging the darkness. All of our comfort now is just finding people to sit with us in the darkness. This is my aim now, just finding people in the darkness to share that moment with. I personally don't want to feel good. My people are dying. Why the f**k should I feel good?"
Nafar's blunt honesty goes further. When asked about the future of Lyd his response is succinct: "khara," the Arabic word for sh*t. Sure, it might be pessimistic, but to Nafar's point, many Palestinians, the rapper included, are exhausted by a life dictated by Zionism. It feels unreasonable to expect a rosy, hopeful outlook on the future when so much of Palestinian life is rife with injustice. Nafar lost his cousin to gun violence in Lyd. His family lost his ancestral home. Even the landscape of his life is riddled with these reminders. When shooting a music video for his song, the Son of Lyd, Israeli police stopped him and the video crew six different times while they were trying to record all because they were using a Palestinian flag as a video prop. Nafar explained that he had to go out of his way to cut scenes in the video to ensure that the police did not make too much of the final cut because he wants viewers to know that there is more to Lyd than the drug market and violence.
"There were two videos released [for the Son of Lyd song]. In the 'Making of the Son of Lyd' video, what we did is we attached a Palestinian flag to a motorcycle and I got stopped six times by the cops. You can see it. It's all documented. And the funniest part is that while the cops were busy pulling me over, there were drug deals happening around us and they didn't give a f**k. They were so obsessed with the flag. The second time we were stopped and [the police were] issuing me a ticket and had the police car with the lights flashing. So, I used the moment to record for the video and that ended up being the main part of the video--the part with me rapping to the police car with lights in the background and we set a release date and I loved that video. But I had that weird feeling that I wasn't happy about it and I didn't know why. A day or two before the release, I canceled the release. I realized that the police took over my video and that's what bothered me. So now in Lyd, the city I wanted to show--my city that I wanted to represent, it's all about police and crime and this is not what I wanted. Yes, the police are part of my city, but there's a huge identity that I wanted to show that was missing, so I reduced the police presence in the video and replaced it with a way to show my love for the city. I don't want to romanticize my city, and say there's a 'beautiful struggle' here, but it is a unique place with a unique struggle."

I think the reason people are perplexed by avatar's success and relatively minor cultural impact (though we keep talking about it so was it's impact that small?) is that they keep thinking of it as a movie and not a designed experience. Watching avatar at home on TV is like watching the ride film for flight of passage or star tours at home on TV. It's a rough approximation that will not feel the same because you're missing 3/4 of the context. Like yeah the plot is simple and derivative, the characters larger than life, the themes are extremely obvious...those tend to be necessary strategies in creating experiential stories because otherwise stuff gets lost in the overstimulation.
In its intended context, a giant 3d theater, these aren't flaws, but assets that help you move along your own experiential journey. They only exist to add meaning to the emotions the experience is creating At home, they're liabilities because they become the primary experience. People get perplexed because few people design experiential stories for film, or only do so accidentally. The rules are different and don't translate 1:1. Plot, character, and theme take on different roles and different importance.

Can you say more about your thoughts on the anti-hero video? I feel that the whole thing is much more nuanced than either "side" is making it out to be and your tags make me want your take!
Anon: This is just to say that I absolutely agree with your thoughts on the Anti-hero video. It's been bothering me, and is a good example of the discomfort I have felt in certain aspects of online criticism in recent times.
*********
I've been thinking about Taylor a lot with her tour and so really wanted to come back to this question that I have a lot of thought of.
I should start by saying that I have only seen the most high level mainstream summary of the criticism of the video. For example: "[Taylor] made a choice to explicitly name her demon, the fear of being called fat, which is fatphobia in its most literal sense” or "Taylor Swift’s music video, where she looks down at the scale where it says “fat,” is a shitty way to describe her body image struggles. Fat people don’t need to have it reiterated yet again that it’s everyone’s worst nightmare to look like us." Both those statements absolutely fill me with rage, both because I think they're wrong about what the problem is about how the world works, and because I think they're even more wrong about how to change it.
My read on that scene was that it was a very real, if obvious point, about the messages she got about her body as a person and a performer. It was an artistic depiction of a common experience. I don't think anyone who was criticising was denying that there was something fundamentally accurate about what she was depicting. It was just that they thought she shouldn't depict it.
My disagreement is basically two fold - one is experiential and one is analytical. The experiential part is that I know what happens when women who live in our society feel unable to articulate their actual feelings around fat.
In my late 20s, I was part of an activist scene that had enough of a feminist understanding that people didn't talk about fear of being fat, but not a culture of actual liberatory fat politics. What this mean was that all the feelings that would have been expressed somewhat directly in another context - were filtered through the language of 'health'. Just making some things unacceptable to say hadn't changed the politics around it and hadn't changed the way anyone felt. Instead it just meant that the orthorexia talk went up to 11 - and it was even harder to address what anyone meant. Making the language that actually had meaning to people unacceptable made it harder for people to heal and harder for people to fight collectively.
And as one of the fattest people on this scene, it also didn't make me feel any more welcome or acceptable, it didn't feel like an act of solidarity. I always knew what people meant.
*********
From an analysis point of view - I think I just fundamentally disagree with the people who criticised Taylor's video about how fat hatred works in society. One of the things that I struggle with in the current moment is a version of analysis that maps one form of oppression onto each other. And one of the starting points is that there is a group that is oppressed and a group that's not oppressed.
I've never thought that's how it works in our society. I remember reading a very early version of a thin privilege checklist (I also hate privilege checklists, but that's a story for another day) in like 2005 that listed things like:
You don’t receive suggestions from your friends and family to join Weight Watchers or any other weight-loss program.
You can eat what you want, when you want in public and not have others judge you for it or make assumptions about your eating habits.
And just thinking - how do these people think the world works - do they really think it's possible for women to be thin enough to avoid this sort of policing?
There are many elements to fat hatred and the way it functions in society - but one important strand is as a way of disciplining and controlling everyone, but particular women. In this thread of fat hatred, fatness isn't a function of absolute body size, but falling outside what is acceptable in a particular context. (I do think there are elements of the way fat hatred - systems of oppression are complicated)
I have never met a woman so thin that I was able to assume that she didn't grow up being told that she was too fat by her mother and other female relatives. As well as this social element to what fat is - I absolutely think the same is true at work. I am absolutely sure there are waitresses, actresses, clothing retail workers, and people who work in the fashion industry as a whole, who are a fraction of my weight, but have not just had to deal with more fat hatred, but more material consequences in their employment for their size than I have. (And of course I can't know, but I think it's likely that my size has contributed to me not getting jobs).
So it doesn't make any sense to me to act as if you can draw a line around people based on body size and say - these people are affected by fatphobia and these people aren't.
*********
My third disagreement is basically the question of how we create change. One of my big criticisms of the fat acceptance movement in general is that it's incredibly individualistic. There's this huge emphasis on how people feel about their bodies as individuals - and I don't think think it matters so much. The idea that the problem is an individual woman being afraid of being called fat, as opposed to the structures of society that made her feel that way - is just completely fucking alien to my politics and makes me want to rage.
I do think there's a important discussion to be had about how to act in solidarity with each other - and that means not casually reproducing fucked up ideas in the lunchroom every work day. But I think it's incredibly important that there's space for people to make art that honestly depicts how oppression structures our life. We don't change the world, by having a problem with art that depicts how it is at the moment.

Poppy Splits From Titanic Sinclair
Tumblr media
January 19, 2020
Poppy, the artful and creepy experiential YouTuber turned musician has publicly split from her director, creative partner, and alleged boyfriend Titanic Sinclair. Poppy rose to mainstream internet fame around 2016 when PewDiePie reacted to her videos in a video of his own.
The task of explaining what exactly Poppy is a grueling one. She’s a character whose style was very innocent, kawaii and bubblegum pop until this year. Her videos feel hypnotic with their insanity.
Anything can happen, from 10 minutes of her literally only saying, “I’m Poppy” to her interviewing her best friend, a mannequin. Viewers can begin to see that the videos have a creepy under layer to them. Things seem off; numbers keep appearing, things glitch, and Poppy begins to sound like she’s crying for help. That’s where the fun of being a fan of Poppy begins, being able to theorize what’s happening, it’s exhilarating.
However, this is real. Moriah Rose Pereira, the actress who plays Poppy, is claiming Titanic Sinclair (Legal name: Corey Michael Mixter) has abused her, in a public statement made on Dec. 28, Poppy wrote, “I was a person who suffered similar wrongdoings as one of his former partners brought to light,” which, many have taken to be a direct comment on the 2018 Mars Argo lawsuit. Mars was Titanic’s former creative partner and girlfriend who sued him based on abuse and sued Poppy for copyright infringement.
The news was sparked by Poppy unfollowing Titanic on all social media a few days before the public statement, as fans became quick to run wild with conspiracy theories. Titanic later did the same, unfollowing and deleting every photo of Poppy.
Then on Dec. 7, 2019, Poppy removed the directing credits for Sinclair from many of her YouTube videos. Shortly after the deleting, rapper Ghostemane revealed that he and Poppy had begun a romantic relationship.
This Dec. 28, 2019 tweet shows three screenshots of Poppy’s Instagram story explaining the situation. (Twitter @poppy)
A transcript of the above screenshots:
“To whom it may concern,
I grappled with the thought of making this statement but I decided to set the record straight.
As some of you know, my former creative partner and I have parted ways. This was a long time coming but this is a person whom I defended in the past because I thought he was misunderstood. The reason I am making this statement is due to the amount of misinformation online about me and my character and I owe it to myself to clear a few things up.
I met this person at a young age and things were seemingly good for a while until echoes from his past were too loud to ignore.
I was never ‘an accomplice’ to this person’s past actions like some believe – I was a person who suffered similar wrong doings as one of his former partners brought to light.
This person glamorizes suicide and has used it many times in the past to manipulate me. And the last time I finally had enough.
As a grab for attention he messaged fans before he tried hanging himself while I was on tour with an item that belonged to me. These are tactics that he used for years. This person lives in an illusion that he is a gift to this Earth. He weaved himself into a storyline, wanting the public to believe he was a puppeteer, which is so far from the truth.
In light of recent events brought to my attention, he is already quick to jump in and use my former friends as his next experiment, repeating manipulative patterns he has for years.
I was trapped in a mess that I needed to dig my way out of – and like I always do, I figured out a way to handle it. I encourage those of you who feel trapped in a situation, whether it be similar to my previous one or not – to take the first step because that is the most difficult one.
This is not a request for sympathy and I am not a weak victim, but this is me setting the record straight.
I am happier than I have ever been and I am excited to move forward.”
Fans cheered on Poppy, starting the hashtag #TitanicSinclairIsOverParty in which they spread the word of her statement, showed support and admiration for her, and shared memes making fun of the alleged abuser.
People have criticized Poppy for victim-blaming Mars back in 2018, others have speculated that Titanic might have forced her to. Poppy’s tour is still on schedule and publically she seems to be fine.
