Sports Costumes - Kids NFL Los Angeles Rams Uniform Costume
Theme Halloween Costumes
Football Costumes
The NFL experienceWell, it happened. He’s a top draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams. Which mean an all-important thing. We’ve got to get him suited up to play in the NFL!That’s right, your kid is the next big thing to hit the league. So he’s going to need the look to match. Well, let’s get him outfitted in authentic Rams style. With this NFL Los Angeles Rams Uniform Costume! Okay, okay, we get it. He’s a little young to start out in the league for real. But there’s no reason he can’t feel like he’s a superstar when he’s all done up in this adorable football set! Modeled after what the pros wear on the field, it has all the gear for him to get a taste of the NFL action. And give it just a few years. You never know, he might just grow up to play for the Rams someday!Product DetailsThis LA Ram Uniform Costume is NFL officially licensed from Franklin Sports. Made with 100% polyester doubleknit & jersey mesh fabrics, it has a Rams logo printed on the front. And it comes with iron-on jersey numbers to customize it with your child’s favorite player number! The pants fit with elastic waist and cuffs, and the plastic helmet secures with a chin strap. As much as this costume looks like the real thing, we do want to make sure you know that it’s a costume helmet only, and it’s not designed to offer any protection for backyard ball.Costumes for fansWhether for Halloween or to get him his first football fan experience, we’re all about it. We’re fans, too, after all! Start him out right with this Rams costume, and he’ll be ready for the fun. We carry costumes from all the best teams in the league, too, so he can even face off against his siblings or friends for a great group theme!

You don’t wait in line at the bank to deposit a check when you can do so from your phone, and you probably don’t chow down on burgers without considering a superfood replacement. Life hacks are real, and DIY is so “in” it’s no longer trendy—it’s your norm. Why would your health be any different? Biohacking is, very simply, the use of innovative ways to catalyze your health, and you’re a buff when it comes to creative scientific practices and mindful routines to maximize your wellbeing. Let Wellspring be your chance to get your health down to a science. Featured guides to look for: Dave Asprey, Jamie Wheal, Dr. Robin Berzin, Max Lugavere

Maybe she’s born with it… Maybe it’s charcoal/botanical serum/silk extracts. You eat well and keep your house as non-toxic as possible, and you’re well aware that as your body’s largest organ, your skin deserves the same treatment. It’s an investment in the future; you know that taking care of your body with clean beauty products is just as as important as not smoking and choosing organic. You don’t need to have regularly-scheduled V-steams to be a clean beauty connoisseur, though—do you love cucumber masks and coconut oil? Yeah, we do too. Featured guides to look for: Elle Macpherson, Alicia Silverstone, Jen Auerbach
Conscious Entrepreneur
Tumblr media
Click through to see the Conscious Entrepreneur track!
Your idea of a great time is stimulating conversation with like-minded people who are determined to change the world. While cocktail hours are great, you’d rather get your hands dirty (clean?) by digging into the work itself. Your business—or idea for a business—will not only be your ticket to success, but something the planet would consider success as well. You understand our life experience is only as awesome as we make it, and you’re committed to making your life matter to the fullest. Pro-tip: You don’t need to own a business to be a Conscious Entrepreneur. Maybe it’s about bringing the lessons back to the company you work for. Be the change! Featured guides to look for: Kyle Cease, Chip Conley, Roy Spence, Simon Mainwaring, Zane Wilemon
Fitness Junkie
Tumblr media

Sweating is a religion for you. There’s nothing like the pumping of blood through your veins to make you feel alive, and you’ve done it all or want to try: Cycling, hiking, running, climbing, yoga, HIIT, barre… There isn’t a fitness modality you’ve heard of that didn’t pique your interest. While your friends are lolling in bed on Saturday morning, your idea of a good time is to hit the pavement, the studio, or the machines and let the good times roll down your neck. Maybe you’re a recent convert, and just discovering the joys of hard work. Let Wellspring be the place to try all the things you’ve been meaning to. Featured guides to look for: Jacy Cunningham, Mike Aidala + Chelsey Korus

You’re passionate about health, and understand that it’s a multifaceted journey that means something different to everyone. You’re pretty sure that you’ve created routines that work for you, and you love sharing them and learning other ways to live well. Rubbing elbows with other mavens feeds you—there’s room enough for all of us, after all. Featured guides to look for: Elena Brower, Glennon Doyle, Sally Kohn, Marc Holzman, Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts
Wellness Weekend Warrior

Work hard, play hard is your mantra—particularly when the lines of work and play are blurred. You’re all about crushing the professional game; you know that you’re at your most well when you’re feeling creatively and intellectually satisfied. That mindset carries over into the ways you choose to chill as well. Who says having a great time has to be unhealthy, or derail that creative and professional satisfaction? You know that you’ve earned a little self-care and self-love when the workweek is over, and if you’re really lucky, that your weekend will bolster your profesh life as well. Featured guides to look for: Eoin Finn, Nadia Bolz-Weber, Natalie Kuhn, Kerri Kelly, Keith Mitchell

Want more from Nadia? Learn from her in person at Wellspring in Downtown Palm Springs this October, and learn what it means to #ExperienceWell. Tickets available now!
Reverend Nadia Bolz-Weber says that she had her ass saved in a church basement, not a church sanctuary. Nadia grew up going to a traditional church in a conservative Christian denomination three times a week. As a teenager, she was troubled by what she felt were contradictory teachings and ended up leaving the church for a life of heavy drinking and drug use. Ten years later, she realized she needed to get clean, and started attending 12-step meetings. It was these meetings in church basements that Nadia credits for helping her to redefine and reestablish her relationship with God.
During these years, when Nadia’s nascent faith was beginning to reemerge as a driving force in her life, one of her good friends—also a recovering alcoholic and fellow stand-up comedian—lost his struggle with bipolar disorder and committed suicide. In the wake of his death, Nadia’s community turned to her (one of the only ones among them with a faith practice) to perform the funeral. As she looked out across the mourners, a motley crew of academics and queers and recovering alcoholics and comics, she became aware that this gathered crowd of misfits had no real home in which to hear this traditional message. They had no pastor. “Oh shit,” she realized. “I think that’s me.” She entered seminary shortly thereafter and was ordained in 2008.
Nadia’s upcoming book—Shameless: A Sexual Reformation—comes out early next year. For it, she’s asking women in her community to mail her their purity rings if they have them, which she says she’ll melt down and sculpt into a vagina and mail to Gloria Steinem upon completion. We sat down with Nadia to hear her take on Christianity, religion, sex, and shame. Watch to hear her take, and then read on below for more.
Wanderlust (WL): Let’s start right off the bat talking about this idea of sin. Is sin real?
Nadia Bolz-Weber (NW): I think a lot of people are very turned off by the term “sin” because of the way it’s been used against people, because it’s like somebody implying that you’re bad and immoral. If you really strive in your life to be a good person, the last thing you want is someone being like, “You’re horrible and you should feel bad about it.” But, there’s an author named Francis Spufford and in his book Unapologetic, he redefines, instead of using the word “sin,” he uses this term “the human propensity to fuck things up.” And then you’re like, “Oh, I definitely have that.” Right? Like, there’s something in me that no matter what, I’m gonna end up hurting people, or I’m gonna end up having selfish motives about something that I pawn off as being virtuous motives for something.
WL: Is organized religion a symbol system that causes people this kind of pain or trauma that they then need to reconcile?
NW: I think religion, especially when it comes to messages around our sexuality, causes a really particular type of harm in us. Now, the culture, the broader culture, also has some very damaging messages. There’s the commodification of sex. You can “know” how worthy you are of desire according to how close you are to a body ideal. Once you’re too old, or too fat, or too plain, you’re no longer worthy of sexual desire and so there are these damaging messages that society gives us around the commodification of sex.
I sort of hesitate to indulge in the sin of false equivalency though because messages from religion, those go down to our created place, our source code. Those seep into us in a very deep level and the difference is that the society has … our society has never said that the creator of the universe is disgusted by my cellulite. Do you know what I mean? So, the religious messages are saying, “This is God. God feels this way about you as a sexual being.” And that can be pernicious in a very particular way.
WL: Let’s talk about your experience with sex then growing up. When was the first time that you were talked to about sex? When was the first time that you were able to sort of explore that with yourself?
NW: My mother, bless her, who is an amazing woman, who I have a great deal of respect for, you know, handed me a Christian sex-ed book and was like, “Let me know if you have questions.” The basic message is that, men are supposed to be the leaders and they’re supposed to have this competency in the world and what the real focus for girls is trying to be as pretty as possible and quiet as possible so that you can attract them so that they can take care of you and you can have babies.
WL: How did we get there? I mean, in the Bible, especially the New Testament, Jesus is hanging out with prostitutes. How did we get to this point where all of a sudden, women were the quiet demure and men were superior? What happened in the church? How did sex and femininity become marginalized?
NW: I think a lot of the sort of really misogynistic interpretations of scripture, and also the fear of sex stuff that came into Christianity came in with a lot of the church fathers, a lot of the original interpreters of these texts and theologians in the Christian tradition. They were doing what really any of us can do, which is going, “We have some concerns with ourselves and the world, and we’re going to go to this sacred text and see what kind of direction we can get.” Well, Augustine interpreted the Garden of Eden story in a really particular way that we are so influenced by that we don’t even know the difference between the text and his interpretation.
For instance, the word sin isn’t in there, the word temptation isn’t in there, the word temptation’s not in there, the devil is not in there, “original sin” is not in there, fall from grace is not in there. All of that is stuff that Augustine interpreted into the Garden of Eden story. So then it’s like, “Okay, well who was Augustine?” Well, brilliant guy, however had some sexual hangups like all of us do. His original shame, his story, his original shame came from an incident in the bathhouse with his father when he was going through puberty and he had an erection and his father commented on it.
In the same way, the Song of Solomon is this beautiful erotic poem in the Bible, and it’s most likely the only book in the Bible that was possibly written by a woman, and it is mostly an erotic poem about a very shameless woman who has a lover and she loves her body and she loves their body and she loves sex and eroticism, and she has no shame about this. So what happens? Origin, another sort of church father comes along, and he goes, “No, that’s not about sex. That’s about Jesus’ love for the church. It’s just an allegory.” And okay, well who was Origin? Origin was this guy who was so terrified of sexual temptation, no kidding, he castrated himself. He cut his balls off. Is that the guy we want to go to for direction?
WL: Where did the idea of shame come from, and why do we feel it? How does it sort of creep in to our everyday lives?
NW: I see shame as being this hidden thing that drives us sometimes, because it’s this dark thing that I need to make sure nobody sees. I need to put all this energy into pretending something about myself is not true or something about myself is the whole truth. Or I need to make up for it, or I need to keep proving myself, or whatever because of this suspicion I have that something’s bad about me. I think if we could bottle shame as an energy source, it could easily replace fossil fuels, because it can really be this driving thing in our lives. But what it will never lead us to is freedom. Never does shame lead us to freedom.

To embody wellness is to take our practice off the mat—the ultimate rebellion is apply the principles of mindfulness in our everyday lives. Learn more about what it means to #ExperienceWell with us at Wellspring in Downtown Palm Springs this October! Tickets available now.
What does it mean to be free? Yoga can hold the key to rediscovering our personal freedoms. In time, the practice helps hone the liberties of our everyday lives. We loosen our grip as we realize that we can’t control everything. Throughout this journey the ways we react to challenges and handle situations begins to change, as old parts of ourselves that no longer serve us begin to fall away. Yoga is a celebration of the freedom we experience in our minds, bodies, hearts and souls. Our perceptions expand as we acknowledge that we are all connected to something greater—to the great cosmic whole.
Here are four ways that yoga preserves our sovereignty and reminds us of the power in our potential.
Yoga as Rebellion
To be a yogi means to take part in a peaceful rebellion. Yoga and mindfulness have now transcended obscurity and seeped into the mainstream. What it means to be a modern yogi—to lead an alternative and mindful life in today’s world—is not just about designer yoga pants and mala beads, chanting and meditating for peace, or quitting your job to be a yoga teacher. Those who flock to this path do so because how life was once perceived is challenged instantaneously. There is no turning back.
The deeper we dive into this practice, the more we question what we know about ourselves and our life’s purpose. To be a yogi means to go against the status quo of what we think we should look like, or should do with our lives. We rebel against the norm—against what our families may have expected us to do with ourselves and our careers. Our yoga gives us the ability to stay true to our own path; to march to the beat of our own drum as we pursue our most cherished dreams. Yogis don’t just join a rebellion… they lead it.
Yoga as Liberation
It is through yoga that a detached awareness as an observer of the mind is developed over time. We begin to understand and accept that our thoughts—when put into action—create our reality. But still, it is easy to fall back into the habit of projection into the future with anxiety, or ruminating over the past which can lead to depression.
By continuing to practice the art of paying attention to the present moment, however, we liberate ourselves from the confines of the mind. We free ourselves from the shame we may have spent a lifetime holding in both our minds and bodies. We cut the psychic chords of limiting beliefs about ourselves that hold us back from our dreams, because we come to realize through mind, body, and spirit that we are capable of miracles. Yoga is an emancipation from the shackles of our negativity; our shadow self. It is through this liberation that we become lighter and less weighed down by the past—we become comfortable and confident in our own skin. We love and accept ourselves exactly as we are.
Yoga as Independence
We live in a paradox: a world that is hyper-connected and isolating at the same time. Many of us spend so much of our precious time living through our handheld screens in an attempt to feel connected to this “global village” of ours, that the most important connection can often fall by the wayside: the connection to the Self. We forget how to listen. But yoga is a direct line back to that union: the yoke of mind and body that fuses together in communion with the divine. Our inner “Self” is our best friend who many of us may have a tendency to mistreat as though we were in an abusive relationship. We can become empty inside and lonely, and turn to coping mechanisms like co-dependence on others to fill that void or worse—to substance abuse.
But in coming home to our “Selves” through yoga, we realize each and every time that we are indeed enough as is. We become so confident in our solitude that owning our independence becomes exciting, rather than uncomfortable or scary. We relish in our alone time and use it as an opportunity to create, to reflect, to practice self-care. It this epiphany that makes us aware of the fact that our inner relationship is all we’ve really got—and that in turn, our outer relationships can truly start to blossom and flourish. Our bonds strengthen because we love ourselves wholly. By relinquishing our grip on co-dependence we can lead a blissfuly independent life.
Yoga as Freedom
Our freedom is a gift. And for anyone who has been blessed with total autonomy, it is a gift that is so often taken for granted. We forget that our good fortune may have happened by luck or chance, and ignore the abundance of opportunities at our disposal. We obsess over what we do not have, what we have not accomplished, and how we will not be happy nor complete nor fulfilled until we meet certain standards. We longingly compare ourselves to the status, success, fame or celebrity of others, instead of relishing in how far we’ve come with the hand we’ve been dealt.
Worse yet, we can make the mistake of believing that everyone is born with the same opportunities—that everyone has the ability to manifest their dreams. We are wrong when we forget the limiting beliefs of that perception. Syrian refugees or the “Lost Boys” of South Sudan were not born into freedom and safety. Ongoing civil war and conflict zones are not ripe with opportunity—only destruction and despair. The real truth about the scarcity of abundance is that it’s an important reminder to us all to be grateful for what do we have. By practicing gratitude for our liberties, our talents and abilities, for a roof over our head at night, for clean water and healthy food to nourish our bodies, we are reminded of blessings that ought not be taken lightly. The moment we lose sight of all we have to be grateful for, we take our myriad freedoms for granted.
As a spiritual practice, yoga broadens our perceptions to dissolve any self-imposed boundaries or culturally engrained limiting belief systems we may hold about the world. We become more expansive—we begin to look outside of ourselves and question everything. That’s when we begin to connect to whatever may resonate as a higher power or divine source, and to the interconnectivity of how the universe works as a whole. But ultimately, it is our connection to all living beings that matters most in this lifetime. When we are connected, our egos subside and humility steps in to run the gamut of what it means to be human.
By practicing gratitude, we become the greatest versions of ourselves we can be. We empower our freedoms and make the most of our experience in the short time we have on this planet. We become large instead of small; we participate in service and give back to the world. In taking charge as leaders of this peaceful rebellion, we as yogis liberate ourselves from negativity. Our independence cultivates connectivity; our freedom as a way of life in service to those less fortunate.
To be a yogi is to be the light that shines in the darkness.

Want more from Sally? Learn from her in person at Wellspring in Downtown Palm Springs this October, and learn what it means to #ExperienceWell. Tickets available now!
Sally Kohn spent 15 years as a community organizer before landing a job at Fox News as the token liberal on-air. In her years there, she learned an important lesson: Though she had long figured that her colleagues were full of hate—loud as they were with opinions that were far different than her own—she realized over time that it was she who was judging them. She set out to learn what caused people to be so removed, and in her travels working on a book (The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity is available now) she postulated just what it is that causes us to separate ourselves into self-designated categories of “us” and “them.” Watch on for her learnings, and read below for more.
Wanderlust (WL): Let’s talk a little bit about this age that we’re living in. What does it mean to be an outsider? An insider?
Sally Kohn (SK): We are in interesting times when it comes to being an outsider versus being an insider. I think what’s important for us all think about is we all occupy both roles in different ways. But what’s interesting because of the moment we’re in, in society, where we’re all feeling inundated whether it’s politics, it’s the environmental crisis, crumbling infrastructure, failing schools, segregated neighborhoods, we are all feeling these mounting problems all around us. What’s interesting is part of that, we’re often focused on the ways on which we’re outsiders and the harm that’s being done to us by that status. We’re not often taking responsibility for the ways in which we’re insiders and what we can do constructively in those roles to help the people who feel like outsiders in those dynamics. So, we have to see both sides of it.
WL: Do you think that we always have a sense of fear or a sense of dislike for the other?
SK: Think about ourselves as hardware and software, right. The hardware that we all got when we popped out of the stores, predisposes us to think of the world as “us vs. them.” That’s evolutionary biology, we do have this tribalism and this preference for “our own.” That’s the hardware. Who we hate, who we decide as “us vs. them,” the identities, the categories that we give power and attention to, that is not part of our hardware. That’s the software. That is what we are taught by society, that is encoded into us through media, and politics, and culture. So, that can be changed.
WL: You really believe that people can change?
SK: You know, the only reason that I can do this work is because I’ve seen change happen in both history and in present day. So, we have to bear in mind that as a country, certainly, in the United States of America, we have never achieved the full equality, justice, compassion, humanity, equal treatment of others that we have aspired to. It’s been a rhetorical aspiration, we’ve never perfectly achieved it.
What is important to know is that, even in our country, a country in so many ways founded on and steeped in hate, we’ve progressed, we have gotten better. Our schools are still obscenely segregated today—more segregated today than 20 years ago—but 100 years ago, 150 years ago, most white people supported racial segregation of schools, and today they don’t. We as a society, changed. Twenty, 30 years ago we as a society were more homophobic than we are today, as another example. I know people in my life who were more homophobic than they are today. So, people have changed, can change, do change, and knowing that’s possible encourages at least me to work to encourage all of us to create the environment in which people can change as opposed to permanently condemning them to be nothing but hateful.
WL: How do you do that? How do you create an environment where people feel comfortable to change?
SK: So, in the history of the world, no one has ever changed because someone hated them so much, or some group of people hated them so much that they thought, “hey, I’m gonna go give them a gander because they hate me so much and treat me like I’m stupid,” right? So, there’s a moral dimension to this, which is you have to believe. This is, here I’m quoting Bryan Stevenson, “you have to believe that people are more than the worst thing they’ve done in life.” You also have to believe people are more than just the worst thing they’ve thought in life, or the worst thing they’ve said in life.
WL: When you were traveling around interviewing people for this book, what were some moments when you saw people make this leap, or when you were able to make a leap yourself in your own perception of other people?
SK: My book, The Opposite of Hate it’s not a destination, it represents a work in progress—me. I hope more and more of us try to pursue a path of kindness, humanity, justice, calling people in rather than calling people out, advocating for equality and humanity in our policies, and in our relationships, and in our interactions.
When I traveled around the country and the world talking to ex-neo-Nazis, and former terrorists, and people who participated in genocide, what I realized is honestly, how much we all have in common. And the disturbing thing about any of these extreme examples is that any of us can do them. That there isn’t something particularly unique or extraordinary about people who do extraordinarily hateful things, that we all can do it. The flip side is, from these stories, what I learned is we can all change. I mean, if they can change, there’s definitely hope for the rest of us.
WL: Was there ever a moment when you were interviewing these people that you were like, “Oh, shit, I do that. This is me.”
SK: There were a lot of moments when I was interviewing folks where I was like, “oh, wow, this is me.” I try to share as much as I can about my own faults, my own blind spots, my own mistakes, my own hate, because I think we spend too much time pointing the fingers at others. I mean, I will say this much, this is a fascinating moment in history, and this is a fascinating dynamic because I would say 99.9 percent of us agree that hate is a problem in our society right now, and 99.9 percent of us think it has nothing to do with us. That it’s a problem created by someone else. How can we have a problem, that everyone thinks is a problem, and no one actually thinks they’re responsible for it.
WL: What happens when we begin to treat outsiders as insiders? What happens when you open up your ears to an ex-neo-Nazi, to an ex-terrorist? Does that allow them to become an insider, and is that the opposite of hate?
SK: I’m gonna bust open that question because I don’t think this is about outsiders becoming insiders, insiders becoming outsiders. There actually is a larger, I think, project here in that the way we’ve tended to think about rights and justice in our world has been about the privileged vs. the excluded, and often the way we fix problems of injustice is to amend and append people onto the included, the us, while there’s still a them. I think the ultimate path to justice and equality is to get rid of the us and them, to get rid of the insider/outsider distinction, to see our wholeness, our connectedness—connectedness is the opposite of hate, spoiler alert—and to move into a direction where we are all aware of our own and each others humanity and dignity, and enact policies, live in a culture that reflects that.

Living a zero-waste lifestyle is just one way to feel well. Learn what else that can mean for you as we #ExperienceWell together at Wellspring this October! In the meantime, practice your zero-waste travel skills on your way to a Wanderlust Festival or Wanderlust 108.
When it comes down to it, what do you really need for a month-long trip?
The thought of packing your life into a suitcase for a month-long trip can be daunting. Toiletries aside, it may seem that wardrobe alone will likely require at least one checked bag. But fear not: It can be done. Zero-waste extraordinaire and world-traveler Lauren Singer managed to keep a month’s worth of travel necessities in just a carry-on.
Traveling through three different continents and climates, Lauren stayed true to her life’s mission and kept things waste-free, too. Impressed is an understatement. But, OK: How does she do it, and more importantly, how can you do it, too?
All you last-minute packers take note: whether you’re jet-setting or road-tripping, according to Lauren, it’s all about preparation.
Checking In, Not Checking Bags
Before you even step out the door toward your final destination, if you have a smartphone there is one simple choice you can make to eliminate a piece of trash: Download your plane ticket. You can “get a PDF of your ticket on your cell phone as opposed to printing it out,” Lauren explains. With that simple step, you’re already off to a waste-free, start.
One of the main reasons Lauren chooses to avoid checking? “They always have that little piece of sticker tape that goes right to landfill,” she says. It’s unnecessary waste. So, too, are the paper luggage tags. If checking bags is unavoidable, opt for reusable luggage tags, or make your own upcycled version at home ahead of time. Get creative with it! Just because you’re going zero-waste doesn’t mean you’re going zero-style.
The Must-Haves
True to form, the first zero-waste travel must-have on Lauren’s list is a mason jar. Multi-purpose, a mason jar can be used to tote water, coffee, toiletries, and even waste. “I’ve used [my mason jar] to put compost in,” Lauren says, “I’ve carried around compost with me to multiples countries to ensure that I can find a place to compost it.” That’s dedication.
Not making trash is more than just not taking up physical space.
Also on the list of must-haves? Reusable napkins and bags. Napkins, like the mason jar, are multi-purpose, too—use a reusable napkin to wrap up sandwiches and snacks rather than reaching for a plastic baggie. A reusable bag is great to always have on hand, as Lauren says, “If you go somewhere and you buy something, instead of taking a plastic bag you can just use your reusable bag.” (If you’re not sure where you can purchase items like these head to one of Lauren’s favorite online shops: Life Without Plastic.)
Keep It Clean, And Be Mindful
In order to spend a month away with just a carry-on, Lauren brings the essentials to wear on rotation. Of course, this means she’s got to also clean the clothes she’s brought with her. “I always carry my laundry detergent from The Simply Co. with me so I can hand wash and dry wherever I am,” Lauren says. Made from all natural ingredients, and packaged in a glass jar, the powder laundry detergent is the perfect travel companion—and safe to go through airport security with. (Fun fact: The Simply Co recently launched a travel size bottle!)
For Lauren, “not making trash is more than just not taking up physical space,” she says, she’s aware of her environmental impact, too.
When traveling, Lauren is always mindful of using natural and organic products, as well as watching her water usage. “Definitely use products that don’t have toxic ingredients,” she explains—non-toxic chemicals are totally safe for water. Also, “be respectful of the places you’re going to,” Lauren says. In areas where drought is common and water use is monitored, be mindful. Take shorter showers, or if you’re feeling super crunchy—and a body of water is accessible—hop in a lake to rinse off instead.
For Your Entertainment
Sitting in an airport can be pretty boring, especially if you’re traveling solo. Don’t head for the magazine stands, though. You can take this down-time to meditate, or find other ways to bide your time. Lauren suggests pre-downloading podcasts before your trip so you have entertainment before, during, and after take-off (also a great companion for road trips!).
If you’re an avid reader, thanks to technology you can now download books straight to your phone. If you’re like Lauren, who prefers physical books, opt for second-hand options. While you’re traveling, keep an eye out for lending libraries, too. “A lot of cities will have a lending library,” Lauren explains, “so, I’ll leave a book [in the lending library] if I finish it, and try to find a new one.”
Snacks To Go
Sorry, JetBlue fliers, you’ll have to pass on those in-flight blue chips. In-flight meals and snacks are a “100 percent no” in Lauren’s book. Because there’s no way to truly know if an airline chooses to recycle, Lauren says “the best way to reduce trash is just to eliminate it.”
Lauren always has her mason jar with her and asks flight attendants to fill it with water if need be. “If one flight attendant says no, another will say yes,” she says. “I always like to explain and not be like ‘oh, I deserve this I try to say something like ‘I like to reduce the use of plastic. Airlines use a lot of plastic, and I try to remediate that by bringing my own container.’” A simple explanation will generally suffice.
If you’re like Lauren—who claims to be voracious when she’s traveling—packing snacks ahead of time in reusable containers is a win-win. You won’t be producing any waste, and you’ll be catering to that insatiable appetite!
Unsurprisingly, when it comes to packing food, road trips are generally a bit easier. With no restrictions on what you can bring you can pack a cooler with tons of snacks and drinks to keep you satisfied. If you’re running low on supplies, or need to head to a compost drop-off, road trips make it easier for you to “change your route to go to a farmers market or a co-op or something.”
Do Your Research
If you’re looking to make your next vacation zero-waste, eco-friendly, and sustainable you’ll have to do a little research. “I think it’s an intelligent move,” Lauren says, to do your research before hitting to road. In her opinion, it’s best “to be prepared and know where you’re going and to know what stores are local when you travel.”
Download Bea Johnson’s “Bulk Locator App,” suggests Lauren. “You can literally put in anywhere that you’re traveling to and see where there are stores that offer bulk products within your vicinity.”
Don’t forget to ask the locals, too! When you head to local farmers markets speak to both farmers and fellow consumers. As Lauren says, those are the people with “the best advice for me travel wise,” and they “most likely have similar taste in restaurants and shops, too.” Don’t be shy, reach out and make those connections! You might find some really great, otherwise undiscovered, ‘locals only’ spots.
