Week 10: Trip to Morocco!
ÂĄHola amigos!
I just got back from a 5 day trip to Morocco, and it was AMAZING. We basically got to see the whole country while traveling and Iâm so glad I got to do this trip.Â
Marrakech:
We started by flying into Marrakech early Friday morning. Our riad arranged transportation for us because we were initially afraid to experiment with public transport. We booked the riad through Airbnb, and it was beautiful. We all basically got our own beds and the architecture was stunning.

We then took on the souks. We ended up spending the entire day here basically because the shopping was endless. I bought a leather belt, pashminas, clay pot lip stain, a postcard, and some coasters for my family. Itâs pretty easy to haggle the price down a decent amount, but theyâre obviously trying to scam you so donât expect too much. A lot of stuff is also very obviously imported and not authentic, so just be weary.Â

Attractions all closed at 3 PM since we visited during Ramadan/Eid so we didnât get to see much, but Iâm glad we walked the Medina.Â
Fes:
The next day we took a 7 hour train from Marrakech to Fes. We pretty much explored the entire western side of the country, seeing Casablanca, Rabat, and more. The train was decent contrary to what Iâve heard. There was no WiFi or outlets, but we also booked second class instead of first. It got a bit crowded towards the middle, but the scenic views along the way made up for it.Â

We stayed in Riad Verus, a very highly rated hostel. Again it had gorgeous decor, the rooms were nice, and the staff was extremely friendly. They even give you traditional Moroccan tea as a welcome, and itâs unlimited (also delicious so take advantage).Â

We stayed here a second night after our desert excursion, and they had kittens in the lounge! One was super cuddly and ended up following us to our room.

Unfortunately we didnât have much time to explore Fes since we were really only there at night, but we were there during Eid and it was so cool to properly experience local culture during a festive time.Â
Journey to the desert:
We booked our desert excursion through Get Your Guide, and it was great! It was around 100âŹ/person, but included transportation, the desert camp, and some food. Hereâs the link to the exact one we booked: https://www.getyourguide.com/fes-l829/from-fez-sahara-desert-2-day-tour-with-merzouga-camp-stay-t412938/
We got picked up from our hostel along with others on the tour, and began our journey. There were many stops along the way, including feeding monkeys in the forest, a ski village, scenic points throughout the Atlas Mountains, a traditional Moroccan lunch (for purchase), and finally desert. We hit so many different terrains during this drive it was insane.

We stopped at a little shop where they sold the icon headscarves. I bought my own in Marrakech so I just used that, but you can purchase many different types here. We were given more tea, took pictures with some camels, and headed to the dunes.Â

Merzouga (Sahara Desert):
After leaving our luggage with our tour guide, we hopped on a line of camels and rode into the desert. The ride in total was about an hour, and my legs were extremely sore after.

We stopped in the middle to watch the sunset in the dunes, and it was beautiful.Â

Once we made our way to the camp, we were assigned our tents which had a ton of beds and an attached bathroom. Our tour wasnât busy so we got a whole tent to ourselves. They then gave us dinner, which consisted of bread, lentil soup, various tagines, and fruit.Â
Afterwards there was a bonfire and a show, where they played traditional music, danced, and taught us how to use the drums.

My absolute favorite part was stargazing. Iâve never seen so many stars in my life, and it was literally life changing to see. Coolest pictures Iâve ever gotten.Â

The next morning we had a quick breakfast with pastries, eggs, and fruit, got back on the camels during sunrise to get back to the bus, and made our way back to Fes.
Food:
Iâm vegetarian, but I still found a ton of options. I only wanted to eat traditional food, so I tried vegetarian couscous, vegetable tagines, lots of bread, and lots of tea. My friends liked the meat versions as well, and it was cool to try something new.Â
Takeaways:
If you do end up booking the trip to Morocco (which you should), I would recommend skipping Marrakech. It was cool, but just very touristy and overpriced. I wish I got more time to explore Fes and Chefchaoen, or just cities that felt more authentic and cultural.Â
Everything in Morocco is CASH ONLY. We had to hunt for ATMs everywhere and some had insane fees which sucked. Withdraw/convert asap the rate is like 1⏠= 10 MAD and most things are relatively cheap.Â
I wouldnât say this trip is as cheap as everyone says, but itâs definitely a great thing to experience.Â
Stay in a riad! Theyâre these gorgeous multi-floor complexes and are surprisingly cheap! We stayed in an affordable one through airbnb, but there are luxury ones too.
Be cautioned with wearing white in the desert. My fav pants are sand stained :(
Everyone says Morocco is extremely dangerous, but I honestly felt extremely safe. We started in a big group but split off into two for the desert. We avoided walking around late and night and stayed in populated areas. As long as youâre aware, all will be good.Â
Thatâs it for this week! Morocco was such an amazing trip and Iâll definitely be coming back to see more. Finally unlocked a new continent!
Hasta luego,

Youâll have the opportunity to explore the diverse landscapes, from the bustling cities to the tranquil desert, while staying in luxurious accommodations and experiencing the traditional Moroccan way of life.
Day 1: Arrival in Casablanca
Your adventure begins in Casablanca, Moroccoâs largest city and economic hub. After a warm welcome, youâll be taken to your hotel to relax and acclimate. The cityâs blend of modernity and history offers plenty to explore, and you may choose to visit landmarks like the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, or enjoy the coastal views along La Corniche. The day ends with a delightful Moroccan dinner at your hotel or a local restaurant.
Day 2: Casablanca to Rabat
On day two, your 15-day desert tour from Casablanca continues with a short drive to Rabat, Moroccoâs capital. Here, youâll visit the Royal Palace, the impressive Hassan Tower, and the ancient Kasbah of the Udayas, with its stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Rabatâs calm atmosphere makes it the perfect city for a leisurely stroll through its historic streets before heading to your luxurious riad or hotel for the night.
Day 3-4: Rabat to Fes
Next, youâll drive towards Fes, one of Moroccoâs most famous and well-preserved medieval cities. Over the course of two days, youâll explore Fes' ancient medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University, the oldest existing educational institution in the world, and wander through the labyrinthine streets to discover hidden gems like the Bou Inania Madrasa and the Chouara Tannery. In the evenings, enjoy local delicacies like pastilla (a savory pastry) and tagine at one of the cityâs top restaurants.
Day 5-6: Fes to Merzouga (Sahara Desert)
The next leg of your 15-day desert tour from Casablanca will take you to the heart of Moroccoâs Sahara Desert. On day five, travel through the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping at picturesque towns like Ifrane, often referred to as "Little Switzerland," and Azrou, where you may spot Barbary apes in the cedar forests. By the evening, you'll reach Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara, where the adventure truly begins.
Day six will be spent in Merzouga. Get ready for a camel trek through the iconic Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun sets over the vast desert. This is one of the most breathtaking experiences of your tour, as you ride through the golden sand dunes, reaching your luxurious desert camp. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars, surrounded by the serenity of the desert.
Day 7-8: Exploring the Sahara Desert
On day seven, immerse yourself in the Sahara Desert with a full day of activities. You can opt for a sunrise camel trek to experience the early morning light on the dunes or take part in an exhilarating quad biking excursion across the sand. Visit local Berber villages, where youâll have the chance to interact with nomadic families and learn about their way of life. In the evenings, relax in your luxury desert camp, enjoying the peaceful solitude and star-filled skies.
Day 9-10: Merzouga to Ouarzazate
After your time in the desert, your next stop is Ouarzazate, often referred to as the âGateway to the Sahara.â On the way, youâll travel through the Dades Valley, stopping to admire the Todra Gorge, a stunning canyon with towering cliffs. Spend the day exploring the historic port, the Skala de la Ville ramparts, and the Moulay Hassan Square, where you can sample local fish dishes. Marrakech desert trips,
Marrakech desert trips,
Marrakech, known for its vibrant souks, stunning palaces, and lively culture, also serves as the perfect gateway to one of the most enchanting experiences in Moroccoâthe desert. A trip to the Marrakech desert is a captivating adventure that takes you through breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural experiences, and serene moments of tranquility. Hereâs a guide to help you make the most of your Marrakech desert adventure.
Choosing Your Desert Experience Marrakech is the starting point for various desert excursions, each offering a unique perspective of Moroccoâs arid beauty. The most popular destinations include:
The Erg Chebbi Dunes: Located near Merzouga, these iconic orange sand dunes provide a classic desert experience. Camel treks, 4x4 adventures, and luxury desert camps are highlights here. The Agafay Desert: A short drive from Marrakech, this rocky desert offers a more rugged terrain and is ideal for those looking for a quicker desert escape. The Zagora Desert: Known for its dramatic landscapes and traditional Berber culture, this desert is slightly more remote but offers a rich cultural experience.
Camel Treks and Desert Safaris One of the quintessential experiences in the Marrakech desert is a camel trek. As you ride through the dunes, you'll witness the desertâs ever-changing hues and experience the gentle sway of the camel, which is a calming and traditional way to explore the terrain. For a more adventurous journey, consider a 4x4 desert safari. These guided tours provide an exhilarating way to navigate the vast expanses of the desert and often include stops at local villages and oases.
Staying in the Desert To truly immerse yourself in the desert experience, spending a night under the stars is a must. Many tours offer stays in traditional Berber-style camps or luxury desert lodges. These accommodations often feature comfortable tents with plush bedding, delicious Moroccan cuisine, and the chance to enjoy a campfire while listening to traditional music.
Experiencing Local Culture A trip to the desert is not just about the landscape but also about engaging with local culture. Visit traditional Berber villages to learn about their way of life, enjoy freshly brewed mint tea, and discover local crafts. Many tours also include cultural performances such as drumming and dancing around the campfire, giving you a deeper appreciation of the regionâs rich heritage.
Practical Tips for Your Desert Trip Dress Appropriately: The desert can be very hot during the day and quite chilly at night. Dress in layers and bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Stay Hydrated: The dry climate can be dehydrating, so make sure to drink plenty of water. Prepare for Dust: The desert environment can be dusty, so protect your camera gear and personal items. Respect Local Customs: When visiting Berber villages, be mindful of local customs and traditions.
Best Time to Visit The best times to visit the Marrakech desert are during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when temperatures are more moderate. Summer can be extremely hot, and winter nights can be quite cold, so plan accordingly based on your comfort level.
A Marrakech desert trip offers a rare blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. Whether youâre exploring the vast dunes on a camel, staying in a luxurious desert camp, or connecting with the local Berber culture, this experience is sure to be a highlight of your Moroccan journey.

It may be simple to miss the significance of this stuff, however they are going to be extremely essential in your journey.Find out how to Get There: Morocco has a variety of smaller airports, however the two that depend as worldwide are in Casablanca and Marrakech. Seeing as many flights into Morocco arrive fairly late, it may be a greater plan to spend an evening within the first metropolis you land in for a day. Then, take a bus or practice the next day to your closing vacation spot. Planes are filth low-cost and often solely run about 20⏠one strategy to a brand new metropolis. With regard to what number of weeks it is best to spend in Morocco, the consensus is that a month is lengthy sufficient to get a real really feel for Morocco however many individuals solely have two weeks. In fact, there are a lot of fast Morocco excursions for many who are pressed for time.Moroccoâs fame for hustlers could make purchasing right into a little bit of a burden, as not solely should you be assertive in stating that you're shopping, you have to additionally know the appropriate second to say no and stroll away. Native markets belong to the retailers, not the purchasers. Don't contact merchandise in case you are not and be ready to cut price. Cash speaks louder than phrases and chronic retailers is not going to cease urgent you to purchase. Make the most of their hospitality by answering their questions and having fun with a cup of conventional mint tea. It's clever to go to a teashop or two to fathom the undercurrents of Moroccan tradition. Historically, teashops have been the place males 'hid' to flee the oversight of their households. Now, whereas vacationers could also be welcome, the forged of each day characters - males actually clad in woolen "burnooses", fez hats, and the thickest of discussions - will depart you in little doubt that it is nonetheless a person's world.2. FesFes is the oldest of the 4 Imperial Cities of Morocco and is nicely price a go to. The outdated city (Medina) is Morocco's largest car-free city zone and is now a UNESCO world heritage web site. The principle entrance to the Medina, Bab Boujloud, is a grand and spectacular gateway. You will not consider the comparatively small constructing holds! You will see many small accommodations hidden away inside.
There are many younger college students round Morocco, and lots of will observe you to attempt to converse English to you. Fes is a good place for a information who is aware of the town to point out you round. The Medina is a maze of over 9,000 vehicle-free streets, crammed filled with craftspeople, markets, donkeys, folks, and road meals distributors. Different highlights embody the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque (the college inside is the oldest working academic establishment on this planet), the central Souk, the tanneries, Medersa Bou Inania, and the Royal Palace. Clothes in Fes is a bit totally different than within the south of Morocco, so ensure you know what to put on!1. Casablanca & MarrakeshYou'll probably fly into Casablanca, the gateway to Morocco. Nevertheless, there's not a lot to see within the metropolis, and I might advocate heading straight to Marrakesh for a extra fascinating expertise. Marrakesh is an amazing and bustling metropolis, full of pleasure and power. Marrakesh is most well-known for the UNESCO heritage web site Jamaa El Fna, the place you will see snake charmers, fire-eaters, acrobats, and tranquility-inspiring storytellers. This space is the spotlight of the town and is close to the slim alleyways of the Medina outdated metropolis, the principle sq., and the Koutoubia Mosque. In case you get fed up with the pushy merchants and henna artists, the Jardin Marjorelle is just not too distant. It was purchased by Yves Saint Laurent in 1980 and now homes an Islamic Artwork Museum, surrounded by wonderful themed gardens.Having visited Morocco a number of occasions, I've all the time discovered it a particularly fascinating, various and rewarding vacation spot to go to, notably for vacationers focused on different cultures. Nevertheless, there are a number of key factors that I might emphasize to first-time guestsâŠTrains... The Moroccan rail system is each dependable, environment friendly and a good way of seeing the nation. Trains are spacious and comfy, stations fairly primary, however, and that is the important thing level - each freeway and rail programs in Morocco are close to common and observe the identical routes. As a result of frequency of service, I might recommend taking the practice as a substitute of a bus for many routes.Renting automobiles... In case you do determine to go along with a rental automotive, driving in Morocco is easy. Tremendous Highways maintain dashing to a minimal, and gasoline is affordable. Nevertheless, there are additionally tolls, and for probably the most half, you'll want to carry a wad of Dirhams. Automated pay factors alongside the tremendous freeway is not going to all the time achieve recognizing an "Abroad" bank card, and even after they do, the system should select to reject it. Take alongside some money! Bus and "Grand Taxis"... Maybe because of the uniform high quality of trains, I've not used long-distance buses or "Grand Taxis." Nevertheless, when in Marrakech.... Do I want to say one thing that's each native and tourist-oriented? In fact not!Driving Suggestions... Gives some items of sensible recommendation for first-time drivers in Morocco, notably on how one can navigate the infamous roundabouts! The Climate... Within the winter, the climate in Morocco will differ from very heat to scorching. Through the Almond Blossom interval, it will get very chilly at night time, virtually sub-degree C temperature, and the storm programs may be wild. Nevertheless, even right here, touring is less expensive, and the shortage of vacationers has its benefits. In the summertime, it will possibly get highly regarded or stormy. [ad_2] Supply hyperlink
