sooo excited for next semester....... have english again with my favourite teacher for the first time since i was a freshman + itll be fun to have him in senior year i think..... cooler novel study selections also i know catcher in the rye is one of the options which is soooo fun i would love 2 write an essay abt it but youre not supposed to do a book youve already read so. sorry holden. anyway i have art studio for the first time (its basically impossible 2 take with french immersion so i havent had the chance til now) + im reallyyyy excited i think itll be fun + its another class thats pretty light on group work which is reallyy choice because my 2 best friends r graduating so im gonna be sort of lonely. ummm i really miss doin art classes i used 2 do a lot of stuff in the city but because of covid i stopped + i kind of stopped like drawing which sucked but i have Ideas for what i wanna do............... eermm then i have 20th c world history which ive been looking forward to for like trhee years so. yippee!!!!! i was sort of. eavesdropping with my eyes on a girl in the lab doin her work for it and i was like wowowow so fun so cool.. and then i have photography + i dunno how i feel about it like i signed up for it but i kind of want to switch into religious studies (which our school allegedly has but ive never heard of anyone taking it + the course list on the website is broken so) but i dunno if thats gonna be too much + i really regret picking philosophy this semester over that but whatever i like photography its just supposed to be kind of boring but maybe thats a good thing. idk i think my classes r well balanced this year like this semester i have cooking + two socials classes + math (usually my best subject + kind of easy this yr) + next semester i have 2 art classes + 2 humanities. harmony. also NO SCIENCE THIS YEAR. big win for me. and AIEEE i just looked at my assessment stuff i got a 4 on my numeracy assessment am i a smart fella or what................. society if i liked math enough to do it as a job but alas its so boring...................... and i got a 3 on my french written assessment soooo.... french people hmu except i think i probably sucked at my oral assessment so mybe we can just text

backstory

virginia born and raised babey ! she’s the youngest of five siblings and ...it shows. SJDBJWBDJW growing up would have been pretty chaotic had it not been for the fact that her dad was a pretty well-respected police officer in their town ! him & her mom were high school sweethearts which made no damn sense to emiko considering they’re still happily married...the concept just seems fake to her </3

while her parents had a lot of  mushy love for each other, when it came to their kids they opted to take a more emotionally distanced kind of parenting style bc they didnt wanna like spoil their kids or anything but.....it wasnt exactly the best plan ! emi and all her siblings just learned to be very good liars JDSBWBDJW as kids with strict parents do

being the youngest emi took a while to get into her rebellious phase. for a while she’d just watch her older siblings sneak out and party and do walks of shame and all that jazz...and while she was always down to help them get out of trouble none of them ever really trusted her ? since she was the baby they figured she’d be the most likely to snitch which just made her really ///: bc she wanted to be included so bad

flash forward to senior year of high school and finally emi’s like . okay fuck this it’s MY turn ! her dad had recently decided to get into politics with some encouragement from the police chief so he was busy with his career and her mom was busy helping him. it was the perfect time to do what she wanted since it was less likely she’d get caught

so she goes to this graduation party.....and it’s BAD like she gets fucked up & carried away so she calls her oldest sister ( who had come back into town for emi’s graduation ) to come pick her up & on the way to get emi from this house party, her sister ends up getting into an accident 

she didn’t die though JSBJDSBBWJDBWJDBJWDW just broke some stuff and ended up needing surgery ): and emi obviously got busted that night by her parents which ... wasnt pretty at all especially bc they low key blamed her for her sister’s accident which just made emi feel like pure shit babey ! 

visiting her sister in the hospital is what kinda sparked her fear of hospitals ! bc emi was like super guilty and paranoid that maybe her sister was gonna die or her surgery would go wrong and she’d essentially be at fault...it was just a lot of anxiety that turned into a genuine phobia of hospitals after that

but her sister made it she was okay and her dad used all the buzz and tragedy around his family to kinda boost his political career....which was ugly. her sister had been prescribed some pretty heavy pain killers for the pain & thats where things got.....messy

emi isnt sure when exactly it started but between the guilt she was harboring over her sister’s accident, the stress from her parents as her dad got further and further into virginia politics as well as college anxiety since she was about to start at the universoty of virginia.....she stole some oxy and thats what started what would be a very messy and tumultuous addiction  

as soon as she started college, emi felt as if some of the weight had been lifted. she was living away from her family for the first time and dorming so she promised herself she’d take these four years to grow and figure out who she is......except that didnt exactly happen. instead of exploring herself in a healthy way, emi was using drugs as a sort of escapism from her “old” self. she’s extremely smart and she loves her major, but her professors would often comment her papers had the energy of a “rambling and troubled mind”. by the time she was about to finish her sophomore year she was getting so high people would find her literally passed out in the dining hall. but no one was that worried bc for a good two years, she was a pretty high functioning addict. 

cue the summer after sophomore year when emi overdoses at a party. she woke up in a private hospital room with only her father sitting on the couch, the look on his face something she’ll never forget. while him and her mother knew exactly what happened to emi, they hadn’t told any of her siblings. or anyone at all, for that matter. instead her dad had informed the university emi would be taking a year off to privately study abroad and told emi that’s what she was going to tell people bc he’d just decided to run for mayor ! he essentially guilt-tripped her into thinking telling people the truth would be a selfish act, and one that would basically ruin the family reputation and make everyone really miserable JSDWDBWBDJW he also tells her she’s gonna be shipped off to rehab ! 

so she goes to rehab for a good seven months. everyone at school thinks she’s studying abroad in italy, and emi is literally just counting the days til she can go back home to her dorm bc she’s lonely !!! in rehab !!! and she gets that she should take it seriously but shes just so mad at her dad and herself and the world too ig ... just some good old fashioned angst ! but she finishes rehab and her dad got elected as mayor of her hometown in virginia and shes like good for u can i go back to school please JSBDWJDBJW and he says yes

so she’s back ! ready for the universe to give her a break.....ahaha.....

personality + tidbits

so emi......my baby......she’s a strange one. she’s that bitch that’s super nerdy but in the weirdest way like the stuff she’s into is so specific and just....generally stuff literally no one else would care about but to emi it’s like holy shit this is the coolest thing in the world JSBDJWBDJWBJD she knows a little about a lot so she has the tendency to come across as pretentious if you don’t know her outside of class when in reality she’s just read one too many random facts. also weird in the sense that she’s a STRONG believer in the paranormal and in aliens and in witchcraft and stuff like that as well as believing in things that seem “logical”. it can be confusing to people who view that stuff as silly that someone so smart would be into it. 

speaking of smart.....she’s a polygot which basically means she can speak a bunch of languages ! she’s self-taught, and since she’s a classics major some of her favorites to study include greek and latin ( dead language who ? ). she’s pretty chill about it though and if you wanted to learn she’d be the type that’s 100% down to teach you. she always learns the curse words first just you know....for the fun of it ! she probably has very specific “pet names” for everyone in the friend group in random languages 

anyway she’s also stupid. ASDJWBDWBJDBWJDWJD i mean like in the way that she makes the most .... impulsive decisions that usually have negative consequences. she’s the type to convince herself she knows exactly what she’s then come up with the worst plan you have ever heard in your life. an example of a dumb decision emi has made ? your girl ate a pot brownie the day after she got back in her dorm after rehab bc she convinced herself it was a good way to de-stress. some other dumb decisions include various drunk tattoos ( which thankfully haven’t been too bad save for the words eat me tattooed in small font on her ass ). also owns a stick & poke gun so she’s for sure tried to tattoo friends while intoxicated despite.....not being a tattoo artist ... she’s not even an art student .... SJBDJWBDJW....but she’s very very good at convincing people to join in on her dumb antics so be weary

big on photography !!! she loves taking pictures. always that one friend who reminds you to document the moment and you get annoyed but then when you want to post a picture on insta you’re thankful she was there <3 she has the energy of like .... the dad friend when you need support JSDBWBDJWBDJW she tries to be caring but it just turns into like ... emi high off her ass putting her hand on your shoulder and being like “you know fuck it man you’re amazing” not that good at the emotional stuff like she really wants to be but she legit doesn’t know how.......kinda accidentally turned into an emo kid bc she channels her feelings though some kick ass playlists and the notes app in her iphone instead of talking to people JSBDJWBJDBWJDBJ 

she’s high key struggling but she’s the type to be like no its fine this is fine life is a ride babey better hold on ! tries to keep things flirty and fresh 99% of the time but then you’ll witness the rare emi breakdown which.....involves a whole lot of tweets that will all be deleted within 24 hours and emi will in fact deny they ever existed

really a laid-back girl but the chaotic energy is there folks......she can also very easily get into her youngest child complex if she’s upset which just involves emi being a pain in the ass and everyone having to deal with it JSBDWBDJWBDJWBDJW  she likes to make it hard to say no to her.....not exactly manipulative but sometimes she can get close /: not listed in her fears but she is in fact scared of genuine love and affection ! it’s like she craves it so much she’s terrified abt what will happen if she ever gets it.......so she makes sure she’s never in danger of that by never getting into anything serious.....but then at night shes like damn . kinda want a freak to hold my hand rn and tell me they love me ... JSDBWBDJWBDJWBJDWJDW it’s all fun and games.............

Jungkook high school au Genre: high school au(fluff) Word count:…who knows? Paring:jungkook and reader(y/n) Summary: You are in a very popular kpop group called Krushed and jungkook is in BTS. You’re around 18(because your the maknae). You have to learn korean in order to move to korea and go to a korean school. Lets just say that going to the same school and entainment building as flirty jeon jungkook is, as you expected…..hard..

CHAPTER: 1 Part:½

Besides being half english and half korean, in the last two years a lot has happened. Such as living in LA (speaking english), to being forced to audition for bighit entertainment and being in your own kpop group, causing you to live in seoul (speaking korean). You have just done your comeback so you have more time at school; and you don’t know if that is a bad or good thing yet. You go to a school where most kpop artists go because its a overall art school which covers the subjects of art, dance, drama, photography, vocal and music. You didnt mind having to walk to school as was only a couple of streets away which is great because if you wear a mask not many people will recognise you. You knew some of the kpop artists and trainee’s in your classes and you werent in a class without your best friend, Momo. Apart from art, your favourite class was photography, but lunch time is the best.

In your kpop group there were 5 members: Yeonjoo- Leader, oldest, sensible, vocal Taeyoon- Lead dancer, tomboy, main rapper Yura- 4D and silly, vocal, friendly Happi- happy?!, dancer, vocal, cute, energetic Hyunji- vocal, dancer, sleepy and lazy Y/N- main vocal, main dancer, main face, flexible, shy, a bit of rap SIGH! You got along with all of the members but with taeyoon you could tell her anything anything and she would understand, she knew you inside out, you could trust her. You were worried about if people would like you, so you usually look your self up on the internet and people are usually nice but they all find it cute how you and taeyoon are so comfortable around each other, like when you casually just layed sprawled across her on the sofa.

Sadly you got woken up by water being thrown on your face by yeonjoo.“Wake up y/n…. sorry, i even tried tickling your tummy” were the first words you heard that morning. “Why are you like this?!” You replied with a groan while rubbing the water of your face and the sleep out of your eyes. “You should be excited becuase its your first day at your new school!“she said. “I’m sorry to burst your bubble but i’m not excited at all, if anything i’m sort of nervous.” It was true, it had to be said that you were nervous but when you said that you thouht to yourself that anyone would feel like that…its normal. “Don’t be, you’ll be fine. Here get ready. ” she declared while dumping my school uniform on my head. Yeonjoo was like a mum to the group, as none of us lived with our real mums, she took that place and made it her job to take care of us. UUUUURRRRGGGGGHHHHHH You had to wake up. As you opened your eyes, you realised that the school uniform was BRIGHT YELLOW!! just think positive. Anyway yellow could be the new fashion…….pppfftt……NO!! You decised to get it over with. At least you didnt look like a banana, it looked okay..ish. As you were the youngest you still had to go to school while all the other lazy members layed on theirs buts all day except when they have to open the door for the take-away man to give them their unhealthy lunch. You did your morning routine and headed to the living room which had hyunji laying face down on the carpet. You carried her to her room and layed her dow on her bed said bye and went to have breakfast. You had breakfast, brushed your teeth and grabbed your bag ready to go. Finally you shouted “BYE UNNIES!” And left. As you were halfway down the flat stairs you realised that you had forgotten your mask so you had to go back and get it. “ IM GONNA BE LATE!” So you ran to the dorm and back after grabbing your mask and putting it on.

Jungkook practically had the same morning, with that he got water chucked on him, told to get ready, got ready, went, forgot his dancing clothes, went back, got them, and was late. “Well done jungkook!” He said to himself sarcasticlly.

As you nervously tried to find the location of the school, your hands turned sweaty. Finally after a long search you found it and said “you can do this y/n” to yourself. Then you confidently strolled into the school looking like you were meant to be late. You tried to find the reception so they could take you to your class. YESSSS!! They have signs up!! You followed the signs untill you reached the counter of reception. They told you what class you were in, gave you your timetable and a vague direction of where to go. Squinting your eyes to try and figure out what the worn out signs said above each door, was a difficult task. Uuurrrgghhh they werent in any specific order, which wasnt helping. Aa-ha! You found one that looks like your class number so you knocked on the door politely and waited for an answer. You got an answer and went in. “Excuse me sir but is this class 18 because as im new i cant really read the worn out signs very well.“you said while gulping because all the eyes were on you. “Its okay, im sorry but this isnt class 18. Class 18 is just round the corner, i could get someone to take you if you like?” He said kindly and you replied with “Yes please sir”.

You werent running to school because you had a nice homeroom teacher who lets you off because your an idol. If you were really late, you would just say that there was lots of fans outside and if there wasnt then no one would disagree because people knew not to mess with you. As you casually strolled into school with no worries you saw something that stopped your movements completely. A girl. Not any girl but it just had to be a transfer student that was lost and looking really cute because she couldnt find her classroom. But this time she was REEEEEAAAAALLLYY pretty, like heart stopping pretty. And you being the flirty jeon jungkook you were, decided to go talk to her and help her find her class. Lets g–. Suddenly you felt that legs wouldnt move even if you willed them to move…they didnt. Uurrgghh why now?! You completely froze! Come on brain….ENGAGE! Then you realised that she was walking away from you…your eyes widened. She was going to YOUR classroom! She knocked, waited then turned the handle. It was like as if everything was in slow motion. You removed your headphones that were now playing sad music…typical. You knew you were a flirter and you admitted it, you did it for fun but this time was no fun, this was dead serious. You were in love… TRUE love. And not any part of you could deny it, you had fallen for this mystery girl who looks foriegn…. but what if you dont speak her language?! Aaaahh i bet namjoon hyung will speak her language… *sigh*urgh jungkook wake up you havent even spoken to her yet, GET A GRIP!! You kind of recognise her though…

“Yes please sir” you replied politely. Suddenly it hit you, you were an idol thats why they were all staring at you! “Hhhhmmmmm, Ah! Taehyung! Would you like to go and take this student to class 18?” He asked one of his students. Because you were too busy talking to yourself you forgot to look around the class. You looked around the class and your eyes imediatly landed on the tall boy at the back who was asleep whith his head against the window, mouth wide open. You scoffed quietly and waited for a responce from the student that is so called taehyung. WAIT! like KIM taehyung, THE kim taehyung…from bts!? WAIT. You looked at the sleeping student and stared at his face intensly with wide eyes. IT WAS TAEHYUNG!!! “TAEHYUUUUNG!!“said the teacher obviously annoyed at the fact that he got no responce. You looked at the teacher and saw that he was looking at the same boy you were looking at! The cute kpop idol woke up with his back straight and eyes wide open and looking straight at you. You felt a bit centered so you broke the intense gaze that he created. "Yes sir?” He answered while finally breaking the gaze between you and him and looked at the teacher in question. “I wouldnt like you to sleep in my class but i would like you to take this new student to class 18 please.” He declared which you sneered at. STOOOPP! That means that taehyung will be taking me and me only around the school with no one watching us. WE WILL BE ALONE!!! eeeekkk! “Yes sir” he said with his big box smile on. To be honest you had huge crushes on taehyung and jungkook, you just didnt show it in order to seem respectful to your sunbaes. Taehyung took his precious time going down the middle of seats. But before he finished his admirable walk he banged his foot on the leg of a table. Wow, real smooth. “Ow.” He said like it didnt even hurt when he was making a face that said it hurt a lot. Reaching where you were standing he gave you a sly wink when he walked past and the teacher wasnt looking. OOOMMMMMGGGOOOSSSHHH!!!!! TAEHYUNG JUST WINKED AT ME……AAAAHHHH!!! You were silently fangirling on the inside but on the outside you were blushing sooooo hard. You told your cheecks to calm down but they didnt. You didnt have many friends at your old school, only close ones but when they heard you were a trainee they all wanted to be your friend. Typical. The reason you didnt have many friends is because you were naturally cold hearted towards new people. You probably didnt notice but you were being cold towards taehyung and you couldnt help it even though you practically knew him inside out. Back to reality. Taehyung walked past you and he purposely brushed his hand against yours while reaching for the door handle. You were totally fangirling inside yourself. His father passed away when he was 16, and his father loved cars. So Caleb Forbes set out on some sort of journey… to find perspective through the outlet of an automobile. In 3 years, he went through about 15 different platforms – regularly swapping & trading out on curious whims. Toward the end of the journey, he ended trading for a Jeep Wrangler. It was an old square-headlight YJ model. And even in that old beater… the sense of freedom, exploration, and the community hooked him. Yeah – even the Jeep Wave. It all meant something to him. And there was an understood bond & fellowship amongst Jeep owners, that he had not yet seen in automotive culture, or in the other chassis. The rapid-fire trading pace began to slow down.

Eventually – he upgraded the YJ for this 2007 4-door Rubicon. It was outfitted with a bunch of terrible/tacky catalogue accessories at the time, but the price was right for a Rubicon. And it was the first vehicle that Caleb had ever gotten a loan for, independently, so there was a sense of pride, accomplishment & responsibility in taking it home.

Caleb made it his mission/passion to go down the rabbit hole, and learn absolutely everything that he could about Jeeps, the aftermarket, and the community.

  You’d Work Obsessively

There is/was a local Jeep supplier in his hometown of Boone, NC, called Rubitrux. The company was reputable, but their photography, on the other hand, was potato. So Caleb convinced them to hire him on a part-time basis, just to get their photos on their website in order. One day, everyone was out at lunch and/or vacation except for Caleb. The phone was ringing, so he answered it. A customer was looking for recommendations… and Caleb got into a conversation. All of Caleb’s accumulated knowledge/experience just started spilling out naturally: budgets, mod paths, things to watch out for, brand quality, expected upgrades & results, etc. Somewhere during the conversation (unbeknownst to Caleb), Caleb’s boss walked in from the other room & started listening in. After the conversation, the bossman was like, “Dude you need to be selling!” So Caleb went from part time photography, to full-time sales (and photography), to Sales Manager… and photography.

As the Sales Manager for Rubitrux, Caleb was talking to the guys from JCR Offroad on the regular. He got to know them all pretty well. And when JCR had a position come available, Brian called Caleb & offered him an opportunity. Now JCR is located up in Michigan. And the timing was kinda weird considering Caleb had literally JUST gotten engaged. But Caleb & his fiancé felt like the opportunity was too crucial to pass up, and he needed to follow the path of this journey. So Caleb moved up to Michigan solo… while she stayed in NC for another 6 months until she graduated college.

And since he was in a new town with no fiancé… and no friends other than the ones he worked with… work became EVERYTHING. He soaked it up like a sponge, learning as much as he could. Not only about Jeep know-how… but also about true small-business work ethic. So many nights, they would work in JCR’s shop all night long cutting & building, then crash in the office for what little time was left… then wake up at 8 & get to answering calls/sales. This was the real deal. The real aftermarket Jeep culture. The philosophy was: You’d work obsessively, and don’t stop until the project was done. And on the weekends, they’d go wheel.

  Metal don’t cry when you cut it!

One day, Caleb was on a call with Steve from Predator Products in California. Steve mentioned he had an extra one of their truck-conversion kits, and he could hook Caleb up with a real good promotional price on it. At first, it was nothing more than a planted seed, without much real consideration other than a daydream. Caleb loved his 4-door the way it was. But that Jeep-truck daydream grew & grew inside Caleb’s head… like a tumor. And it didn’t help that his buddy Bob + all of JCR was in his ears with things like, “Why wouldn’t you do it?! Metal don’t cry when you cut it! Your Jeep WANTS this! Do it for your country Caleb!”

Finally – God intervened to close the deal, and while they were all on the way back from lunch in Caleb’s Jeep, a middle-aged woman in an IDENTICAL Jeep to Calebs gave them all a huge over exaggerated giggly Jeep Wave. Caleb got back to the shop & dialed that number.

The challenge set forth – was to install the whole Predator Products truck-kit with ONLY garage-type hand tools. It took 2 guys 9 hours… and another JCR all-nighter. But by sunrise, she was done.

He was wrong; he broke everything.

About a year & a half after moving to Michigan with JCR… family responsibilities called Caleb back home to Boone, North Carolina, where he settled back in with Rubitrux, and a whole bunch of new life experience under his belt.

Looking on it from the parking lot, there was no denying that the newly transformed Jeep could use some fresh/matching paint. So after about 150 color changes in photoshop lol… Caleb printed out 10 finals & put them on the fridge. When he decided against one, he would crumple it up, throw in trash, and never look back. Against all others, the final color remaining was Tank green, a factory color from Mopar/Jeep. Caleb added the Tank tint to Raptor Liner, and lined the whole Jeep… in the middle of the night one night… per JCR’s training lol.

Next up – the Jeep really needed 40s to fill out it’s new majestic look. The way Caleb figured, if he had been wheeling his Jeep hard on 37s this long with no issues, he could probably go to 40s… be a little more gentle with it… and not have any real problems. Caleb went with a set of Gladiator XComp MTs

And he was wrong; he broke everything.

So into the shopping cart – went upgraded chromoly axle shafts, Artec c-gussets, heavy-duty Teraflex balljoints, Rough Stuff 1-ton tie rods, a JKS drag link flip-kit, new 5:13 Yukon gears… and a Teraflex big rotor kit with EBC Green pads.

Back to the trails it went, and all was good.

Rubitrux had a Rock Crawler 4.5 long arm kit on the shelf that was old stock. So Caleb scooped that up for a helluva deal since it couldn’t be sold AND couldn’t be returned, and a mystery-engineer named Greg Troutman went overboard with Caleb on the install… customizing some of the install for even stronger performance.

That’s right – daily.

So there ya have it. At a few points in his life now, Caleb’s made the choice to go all-in & follow his calling… without really seeing exactly what may come of it. But he acted on faith & passion. And at only 24, he’s got knowledge of this industry and a matured experience in the community that is beyond his years.

You might figure a Jeep that looks like this would most likely be a stable queen. Capable… but not used. Getting driven to the trails on a trailer behind a high-dollar diesel, like a show horse.

But – that’s not the case here. This is Caleb’s daily. That’s right – daily. His only vehicle. No kidding. It can be done… if you’re not a pansy about it.

Sky Arts - Everybody Street

The documentary looks at photographers that helped to make New York a hub for photographers over the years to capture the and sole of the city through the decades, with many famous street photographers giving their take on what they see as street photography for them and how some go about the process of photographing.

Where it all began..

France in the 20th century was the hub for most in the art world and cameras became part of this world with images including pedestrians in the avant-garde movements such as Futurism, Surrealism and Dadaism. Photography became an alternative to painting, and a selective group of artist began to devote time to making photos - street photography became a subgenre and at the time couldn't rival the popularity of other art forms, it began to develop by the practice of these artist, and so this was the moment street photography became an independent genre. The seeds, if you like were in the images created by Alfred Stieglitz's taken in New York.

Between the two world wars, European artist had to take a step back while the war was going on around the continent, the focal point of the Streep photography moved to United States. But in the 1920's photographers around Europe began working, like Hungarian, André Kertesz, making images in Paris, made after he adopted the 35mm camera device in 1928.

It was Kertesz who became a mentor for Cartier-Bresson whose concept of the decisive moment, explained as the instant when the subjects matter and composition form align, had a massive impact on street photography and its future. 

It is seen that Cartier-Bresson, for many thats helped shaped the practice of street photography.

The documentary - Everybody Street, looks at the work of many of the photographers in recent decades that made New York and its suburbs part of their life work, and for many sticking to the 35mm film camera.

Boogie

Boogie grew up in Belgrade, Serbia. When the war came to his country, he began to take pictures of how hi country was being effected and capture the rawness of people with guns and etc. then in 2003 in New York he began to photograph gangs and people on drugs. He says that he sees himself as the observer of what in front of him and some of that might be disturbing, but its a culture, its life. To be able to get close, he had to befriend those that he photographed, theres a sense of acceptance that then allows you in to the most interment detail. He would get gang kids asking if he wanted to take their picture, and this was a way into the world of gangs in the projects of New York. For Boogie it wasn't just about taking pictures, it was being there, but it took its toll on him as he found d himself becoming depressed and so had to leave the projects, but this shows how living and working in areas that has a fine line, can draw you in that you become a participant like many do in the projects. He produced a book and gave it to some of the people he had come across, and they loved it and felt that they were leaving something behind for the future to view.

Joel Meyerowitz

Joel started life as an art director and Robert Frank got a job for him. And he watched him work in and a studio and in way he was memorised by how he photographed, that this was the moment he decided he wanted to become a photographer. He would just walk the streets of New York photographing everything and anything.

Doing street photography for him is getting to know the people, their gestures, movement, recognising what is in front of you, its identifying with the person in front of him and how they are interacting within the moment.

Martha Cooper

Martha moved to New York in 1975 and was working as photographer for the New York Post and at the end of the day would drive through and area called 'alphabet city' that was the lower east side. Cher photography os more about open space and how people use it and survive in theses areas, and how they use the raw materials in this space as a child. You can see a moment and take picture and preserve it, thats the cool thing about photography. She got into photographing graffiti after a kid had shown her a book of his drawings and this inspired her to photograph the street wall, subway trains in the Bronx area. When photographing the trains, she would make the composition have an interesting background, as just photos of trains dent mean much and doesn't show there area within. For Martha its about capturing something that might be of interest in the future, its not till things are gone that you miss them and so having these images is something to reflect back on.

Jeff Mermelstein

Jeff arrived in New York in 1978, he fell in love of the energy of the people and what they were doing, he likes looking into store fronts and looking not just around him but whats on the ground. His most interesting image is the 'burning shoe' he had three rolls of film and worked on getting the image that looked the most interesting. He mentions about luck and how you create your luck. Some people see his work funny, maybe this is what the candid side of street photography is about. You have to kind of stiff out whats there and to follow your intuition.

Bruce Davidson

Bruce remembers the day a friend asked him if he would like to see his darkroom, he didn't know what it was but when he went down and saw the image develop on to a piece of paper, it was like magic and he was hooked from there on. He would literary eat sleep doing photography. He sees street photography as penetrating someones privacy, and his work he's tried to make contact with his subjects, he covered Brooklyn and the gangs of the area and he would offer them copies of the images he took, he gained their confidence and so was excepted into their world. He did his work with a 4x5 camera, really old school with a black cloth over his head, and would go into the homes of some of his subjects and photograph them. Bruce sees working like this kind of Brough dignity to what he was doing, it was purpose that they could feel and so much went into making the image of them in their homes, which some had very little but dignity was the big part off what he did with his subjects. Some his work was done on the subways in the 70's and 80's and he would go late at night and stay maybe till sunup to capture the rawness that's part of the subways in those days.

Elliot Erwitt

Elliot view of todays photography is that there are to bad images in. The world but theres always room for good ones. An image should give you something when you look at it, some kind of emotion, whether it laughing or crying, something to make you like the image your looking at, it has to communicate otherwise theres no point.

Elliot is old school in that he shoots film, and theres a process to making the image, not just in the camera, but in the darkroom, the use paper and chemicals that bring the image alive. His home is his office, he's converted his home into a darkroom and library for his work that he continues today. He believes digital manipulation kills photography, digital made it too easy for anyone to get an image. Photographers in his view are becoming obsolete, not needing when everyone can make pictures and the internet hasn't helped, but then thats how the world changes and some people will change with the times and some won't.

Jill Freedman

Jill did a book about street cops in 1981 and this was bout the good cops and what was the job and what it took to are a cop in New York City. She would travel units around the area and had almost full access to the things that went on. She would try to be invisible as the cops did their thing, but this didn't always work. She admits that she was scared most of the time, but her book was like a film or a book, this real life and what the police (or the good guys) had to deal with on a daily bases in New York. Some of her work shows the caring side of working their beats, as well as the violent side and the death that might come with that. Jill sees the camera as the only tool that that will, stop time its self. She went on to do book about fireman and how they are a family and like gentle giants of the street.

Rebecca Lepkoff

She saw an article in PM on the Photo League and the workshops and their philosophy, and  she release that was she was doing in her photography, photography people and how they lived, where they lived, what they were doing and how you see how they live through the camera. Its all to do with humanity as she sees it. She looked at dance and how you move the background and she then brought this into her photography in how she used space within her images. She believes the camera is what makes things the way they are, maybe how people looked in the 1950's, she spent years documenting the East Side. Photographers from the Photo League would come down to the East Side and the FBI saw them as maybe something to do with communism and so they were fearful and stop coming then folded up, but she says they always kept an eye them because they were close to the philosophy of the working people, the poor people.

Clayton Patterson

Clayton is from Canada and moved to New York and felt that he kind of fitted in and wanted to get to the roots of New York and so went over to the East Side, that many other photographers took to. He felt the area had a class of people he could identify with, which was wild and free and outlaw sort of feel. He would photograph people outside his door and then putting their pictures in the window, and that kind of made them feel famous. Clayton sees that its not just about you as a photographer, but part of the community and preserving the time for the future and gives access to other that view the images that would not go to such an area. Clayton is know for videoing the Tompkins Square police riot in1988 and made national news and he had refused to have over the tape to the police , he would rather go to jail that to hand over the tape and appeared Oprah show. It was one of the first times a video camera had been used as protest tool against government wrong doing as he puts it. One of the reasons he came to New York was to make something relevant and significant in what he does as photographer.

Bruce Gilden

Bruce is one in a million and has such flare in the way he does his photography with his 35mm and flash. He walks the busy streets of New York and BAM! He gets into peoples faces and takes there image and just as quick walks away that the subject doesn't understand what happen. He quote's "if there was 42 Bruce Gilden's walking the streets, they probably would ban photography". He likes film noir photography and shadow and light, and in his photography he looks for the person that looks different and stands out to him in a certain way and sometimes he makes them look interest in the way he photographs them. The way he jumps at people is to isolate them from the foreground, its one his trait marks, flash helps him visualise the city and show the speed and energy, or even the anxiety of the people. Working with a small camera, you become invisible and people don't even notice he has a camera, he's so close. But sometimes he does get caught by his subjects and fare to say they are not happy, but thats Bruce and what makes hime a exciting street photographer.

A New Documentary Explores the Work of Legendary Rock Photographer Mick Rock

Over the years, the rock documentary has become an increasingly lampooned genre of filmmaking, giving rise to such parodies as Hard Core Logo, Brothers of the Head, and Documentary Now's Gentle and Soft: The Story of the Blue Jean Committee Part 1. Tomorrow, VICE Documentary Films and director Barnaby Clay fire back with the release of Shot! The Psycho-Spirtual Mantra of Rock, a new film profiling the life and work of iconic rock and roll photographer Mick Rock. Growing up in London during the 60s, Rock was quickly embedded into his community's booming music scene. He went on to spent the next two decades running around London and New York, snapping what have become truly emblematic photos of stars including David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and Queen.

The story is told entirely from Rock's perspective, the filmmaker even prefacing the film with the decree that all its materials used came from the "mind, body, and soul of Michael David Rock." With the exception of a few audio recordings taken in conversation with David Bowie and Lou Reed, Rock's voice is the only one heard throughout the whole film. In fact, the very first scene is a staged reenactment of a cocaine overdose he suffered in the mid-90s. The photographer is shown in present day form looking over the body of his younger self, as he lies splayed out on the operating table of some sullen hospital floor. 

The dreamlike sequence is emblematic of a greater theme that runs throughout the film: self reflection and internalization. After spending his life documenting the lives of others, Rock takes a step back and looks inward, narrating each step that got him to where he is today. Intimate studio interviews, never before seen archival footage, and original stills trace Rock's cinematic adventure through the dazzling glam rock scene, the grit of NYC punk, and the excesses of the 1980s.

Shot! is thus a considerable departure from the traditional "rock doc." Creators recently spoke with Barnaby Clay to try and get better sense of his process:

Creators: How you were first introduced to Mick's work? How did you get involved with the film?

Barnaby Clay: I've been familiar with his work since my early teens. My sister owned Transformer, the Lou Reed record, and played that a lot when we were growing up. Its a very striking image. I remember just seeing that ghostly face staring out at me as a kid. I was like, 'Who is that?' I flipped it over and theres another crazy picture on the back cover with that guy with the big bulge in his pants, and the leather cap. At my age these were pretty intense images. 

A couple years later at school I started getting into the Stooges and discovered Raw Power. Seeing that image on the front of Raw Power that Mick took was again something that really stuck with me. Then maybe in my early 20s I went to a show in London of Mick's that was primarily his Syd Barrett pictures from the Madcap Laughs Sessions. When I found out he shot all these other covers, I realized the breadth of his work, and the iconic imagery from that period that he's responsible for, but I would say it was really those two images from Raw Power and Transformer that really stuck with me from the beginning. 

Years later in New York I came across Mick"s manager, Liz Vap. We became friends, and she introduced me to Mick a couple of times but really just in passing. And then I got a call one day saying that he was trying to make a film. He'd been talking about it for years, and I think he finally got to the point within himself where he was ready to actually do it. So they were looking for directors. I was kind of, in a way, a director-for-hire at that point, and got interviewed for the job. He had already met a bunch of people, but I think we hit it off because we came from the same part of London, we both really focused our careers on music imagery, worked within the same sort of genres, and both had made this type of transatlantic journey that started off in London and ended up in New York. For him I think those factors were all very important because it just meant that I could get him and his story, so thats really when he said, "Yeah, let make this."

So you set out to make the film. What was it like working with him? Did he have his own vision of how he wanted it to look or was it more of a collaborative process?

When it came down to putting it together, concept-wise, I was given a lot of freedom, and that was really important to me because, as much as I am a huge fan of Mick and his work, I don't consider myself a documentarian. I'm somebody that's made music videos, commercials, and a lot of short films but really wants to make narrative feature films more than anything else. My one prerequisite when I signed on was that I could get to do this my way. Everyone was fine with that. 

Obviously we had to agree on a concept, though, and I came up with a number that I pitched to him and the financiers. I remember in a very early meeting he told me about his near-death experience and how after many years of cocaine abuse he ended up nearly dying. And he talked about how that was such a big thing for him and how we should obviously go into that. So we did but this actually became a bit contentious further on down the line. He had this image of himself that he remembered where he was just lying there in the hospital basically waiting to have open heart surgery after experiencing a series of heart attacks. When he told me about it, he was like, "Yeah you should have some of that in the film," and to me that just suddenly stuck out as an image and I thought, "Whoa. That would be great!" To have somebody on their deathbed recounting their life to themselves seemed like an interesting concept and a fun one. 

We had a lot of discussion within the edit about things which he deemed too far, and I'd push and he'd pull, and it went on for years basically. I love documentaries and I definitely like ones on music, but I just feel like so often they're just the same kind of thing. We've all heard about people who have got on to the fame wagon and it just going horribly wrong from riding too fast or whatever. For me, my job was to try and tell that in a way which was somehow exciting and different.

You wanted to create something that distinguished itself from the canon of rock documentaries.

Yeah, I mean, I just don't see enough of that in documentary these days. They used to risk more, like British filmmaker Ken Russel did back in the 60s. They're like music videos basically, just totally over the top, packed with incredible imagery, and I just really admired him for going there and trying to do it that way. There's a million ways to tell a story like this and it would be very simple for me to have done a straight-up 'talking heads' thing but I just didn't want to do that. 

Another thing which became very important within the film was the idea to tell this entirely from Mick's perspective. He's the only voice within the film apart from the two recordings of Bowie and Lou Reed because for me I am more fluent to the idea of poetic truth and rock and roll myth. Some of these facts that he comes out with, or stories that he'd tell, might not be 100% reliable, but at the same time it's his version of the events and I like that. 

As I'm sure Errol Morris would tell you, the idea of having one person telling the story is really difficult—it becomes soporific after a while. Those sequences with the hospital, the operating theater, they became very useful as breaks from hearing Mick's voice. They provide a little kind of pause or relief and then he carries on the story. 

How would you say his photography and videos impacted your art direction? Would you say you were trying to recreate his style in your own film in a way?

I wasn't trying to recreate his style, but we totally drew from his work. I was really drawn to the aesthetics he came from, which is like glam rock, Bowie, Lou Reed, Rocky Horror Picture Show... all those guys created this slightly dark but also very theatrical and slightly over the top imagery, which I wanted to infuse within the film.

At the same time, it's a film about a photographer and you want his work looking good. So yeah I did sit down with my cinematographer Max Goldman, and looked at a lot of his work. When we did what we called the "key interview," which was the interview of him in the studio where he's just sitting in the chair, Max set up a series of five looks, and within each of these looks he had a lighting board and he was just basically live-mixing the lighting throughout the interview. When Mick was talking about this certain subject, he would kind of keep it this way, and then half way through he would switch it into a slightly different look. 

But all those looks were based on some of Mick's images, and when it came to coloring the film, we ended up doing the same thing where we'd always be referring back to Mick's images just to check that they were within the same scope of colors and feeling. This wasn't always easy, because half of the film is shot in 16mm, the other half was shot on the [RED] Alexa, and then all of Mick's stuff was either 35mm or medium-format stills. Getting consistency was really hard.

So, how did you go about organizing all these different materials?

I had the idea that this was going to be Mick's point of view, but that you do need other elements to break that up. Some days Mick would just come to the shoot and say, "Oh I've got recordings of me and Bowie and I got a recording of me and Lou," or, "Oh I've got some Super 8 footage of me and Syd Barrett on acid." He was a journalist at one point, and wrote pieces for Rolling Stone and various men's magazines from back in the day. The Bowie tape, funnily enough, is from a now-defunct adult men's magazine called Club International. He did a piece on Bowie and at that point they had already become friends, so Bowie is very free to talk to him. Then there was the Lou Reed tape. I don't really know what it was for. Reed was actually a really techie guy. He was really into his tech. He had a VCR from when they first came out. He had a video camera in the mid-70s, and also one of these early Sony Walkmen that recorded sound. I guess they were just playing around with that and recorded the conversation. It's like five in the morning, both of them pretty blitzed out of their head...

They're both very different, because Bowie's is very clean, he's at the time sober and talking in a very structured manner, whereas the sound quality for the Lou Reed tape was dreadful so we had to fiddle around with it to try and clean it up a bit. We went and listened to the tapes and after going through them a few times, pulled out the bits which felt most interesting and tried to figure out how to thread them through. They were almost like a bookmark throughout the film, a sort of textural bookmark. You figure out the themes and then just try and match them up to where the themes are highlighted in the movie. The hardest thing was where to stop, and I think a part of that was Mick. He was always very conscious about not abusing his friendships with these guys, and not overdoing it.

What do you hope people take away from this film?

I'm hoping that people get that I put a lot of effort in to trying to make it different, trying to tell this story in a more unusual way and, and appreciate that. I'd like it to be the kind a film people can sit down and get stoned to and really get in the zone with. You're in this weird space for so much of the film, this dark place with Mick next to this operating table, and there's these weird animations. It does kind of feel like you're in this bubble for the whole film that you come out of at the end. Rock documentaries all get lumped together in a way, but the treatment and presentation of this film is completely different. Its just important for me that people recognize that. Whether thats a good thing or a bad thing is up to the viewer to decide, I want to people to enjoy the historical musical side of it but also enjoy the way it was told.
