Have you done other cosplay other than CP77?

Ive always been interested in cosplaying but never found a way to explain to my parents about it... they think it's weird and I never got into it. As an adult in my mid/late 20s now, I feel like it's too late for me to start

Sure. I started to cosplay around 2005. I haven't done that many, tho because sewing/crafting process took me longer and longer the newer the costumes got with me having less and less time (first still in school, then lots of time during my studies and almost none when I started working). Btw my mum found it weird as well but in the end she was proud of what I did. She's still showing people my last/newest ones and just asked me yesterday when I do sth again. Also it is never too late to cosplay. I'm in my 30s now and I really want to pick it up again. I still have a small list of what I wanna do. So feel free to start any time! :) Also it doesn't matter if you buy the costume or you sew it yourself (the latter is more win for you when you finally finish it and can be proud of it that you did all that).

Well where to start?

I've started with J-Rock/Visual Kei cosplay. The scene was pretty big back then in my country (Germany) until 2012 when it got nearly extinct bc people started talking mean behind backs (also K-Pop taking over …) and it got lots of drama (kindergarten behavior). I continued on but then I got back into playing video games and thought, alright I'm gonna do some games cosplay, too!

I've done only three and they cost me over 600 bucks to make each: Arno Dorian from Assassin's Creed Unity, My oc Inqusitor Lavellan from Dragon Age Inquisition and Triss Merigold from The Witcher III. I've got no good photo from the last tho, and I felt somewhat awkard bc it was my first female cosplay ever — done only male characters before, felt weird, idk. Still want to wear it one day again to get some good shots that all the hard work was worth it.

My Visual Kei cosplays were mostly Kuina from Royz and Kyotaro from √eight and I did one of my beloved Hizumi (not my cp77 oc) from D'espairsRay. I did a few others but they are not worth mentioning.

KYOTRARO (Vocalist of √eight) (every) Taro cosplay (I'll only show this one bc the others are not worth it) was mirrored from the hair (and contacts), tho. I loved this one, I was very very close to the original I think. Kyotaro-san still has a special place in my heart. <3

YOSHIATSU (Vocalist of CrazyShampo (later DADAROMA)) when I wanted to be a cute anime boy or sth like that.

KUINA (Guitarist of Royz) — Haru no Yoru no Yume FYI: V-Kei bands often had an outfit for a single they did a video for and during that time they changed their hairstyles like once a week, therefore there's always a slight difference in the hair colors/styles/contacts/makeup. Also back then it was super annoying to get high res photos. V-Kei cosplayers mostly made their costumes from scartch using tiny pixel pics the band members uploaded to their ameba blogs back then.

Arno Dorian – Assassins Creed Unity (Elise Reveal Trailer Version) Arno is my baby. Idk how many times I watched the trailer trying to analize the friggin' seams on his coat. the coat alone has over 40 single pieces to sew together.

Hizumi (ex-Vocalist of D'espairsRay, now in NUL.) – FINAL CALL There's two versions, the official from shoots and the live version – I did the last where Hizu had this fluffy hair <3 (klick the link). Didn't look like it was much of work, but I ordered fabric to be printed for this … expensive stuff, ugh. everything except the pants and bracelets is selfmade (yes even the belt).

Inquisitor Lavellan – Dragon Age Inquisition I just realized I have no real screenshot of my cutie elf wearing this outfit how I sewed mine together. It's kind of a mix of the outfit my human oc had along with my elf oc lol – I'm sorry.

Triss Merigold – The WItcher III Sadly only a selfie, ugh. Definitely doesn't do the costume justice – blood, swaet and tears were put into this costumes thrice as much as I already did with Arno and Lavellan. I punched the pattern into leather myself what you can see on the vest. everything leather was also dyed all by myself.

Wow compared to all my former cosplays my CP77 cosplay is nothing against that bc I didn't sew a thing for it, I just combined stuff together. But it is so satisfying when you don't have to prepare half of a year with a deadline to go to a convention being totally exhausted from a sewing marathon that lasted 3 months straight, each evening after work and all day on the weekends (therefore I stopped some day).

Visual Kei (V系) : My Current Hyperfixation.

I'd like to so badly talk about V系 (Visual Kei/Vkei). This subculture has been my top interest these past few months. It is SO underrated.

Context:

Visual Kei is an alternative music and fashion movement defined as flamboyant, androgynous and theatrical. The aesthetic takes influences from international and Japanese glam rock and punk rock bands.

I have just started getting into vkei. Although I am not that educated on it, I love vkei as a whole. Its fashion, the vibe it gives off, its musicians—and most importantly, its music.

Firstly, I want to talk about the FIRST EVER band that got in me into vkei: MALICE MIZER.

Malice Mizer

This band was nothing but purely majestic. The first song I heard from them was entitled, "Ma Chèrie."

MALICE MIZER was my first vkei band ever. Each and every one of their music had me ascending! The day I discovered this band was the day I found happiness.

- But sadly, they disbanded in 2001.

I am currently obsessed with this band. They are the first ever JROCK band I have listened to. Despite Gulu Gulu and Malice Mizer being under the same roof (vkei), Gulu Gulu features more rock and metal-like music, unlike Malice Mizer with their angelic songs.

—— Their songs portray loud music, with band vocalist—Ai—screaming his lungs out. But nonetheless, the music they make is absolutely amazing. I cannot explain my love for this band.

- But sadly, they disbanded in March 17, 2023.

DADAROMA

Dadaroma was the 2nd band I discovered right after Gulu Gulu, and I realized that their music was a bit similar. Specifically, the vocalists' voice. Ai from Gulu Gulu and Yoshiatsu from Dadaroma both captivated me with their amazing voices.

My love for this band is actually insane. Their visuals are stunning and crazed, plus their music makes me feel so lively.

- But sadly, they disbanded in March 2020.

JILUKA

JILUKA is such a talented and wonderful band. I recommend this band to people who listen to heavy metal. Despite their ethereal looks, the band makes such crazy music which is why I love them. They were the first band to get me into metal + the band men are so pretty and kind.

I would LOVE to go to a JILUKA concert someday.

A lot of vkei fans will probably say that the bands I put here are all overrated and that I'm a 'poser' or whatever, but don't think like that.

I know more bands than just JILUKA, Gulu Gulu, Malice Mizer and Dadaroma.

For instance, I listen to Ashmaze, BUCK-TICK, Mejibray, KAKUMAY & Dir en grey. I know a bunch of vkei fans know these bands and consider them popular/overrated, but there's a reason why it's popular. The music, members and the band itself is beautiful and astonishing, which is why it has earned its title as 'popular'.

Plus, as I have stated, I am still discovering vkei bands and learning more about its genres. It'd be really helpful if you guys drop some information about Visual Kei! It is highly appreciated.

I love these bands with all my heart, but please give me recommendations of bands similar to those listed above, or just drop some underrated bands I can get attached to!

I was tagged by beautiful @missimbalance and i will actually do this one because it’s worth it.

1. When and how did you get into j-rock?

It was 2012, i had a two week holiday and decided to rewatch anime from my childhood. I was watching Rurouni Kenshin and heard that one L’arc~en~ciel ending that really marked me as a child so i watched the same video of L’arc playing that song live for seven days straight. Then later i downloaded Dune, watched Moonchild and saw Gackt and fucked up real bad. 

2. List your current most favorite band(s).

The same as always??? MALICE MIZER ofc. Honestly i can’t give up on this band, i love them, i cry every single time i watch a live video or when Mana says something about them on twitter. They never get old for me, even when i only have four albums to listen to and no hope for them to come back. 

My other fave band is La’cryma Christi. Obviously because my favorite guitarist is there but their songs are absolutely everything to me, they’re one of the best bands in 90′s visual kei scene and i’m so sad no one really pays attention to them. Also please sign a petition for Taka to stop with the jewelry bussiness and come back to sing with the boys. Levin is still leaving a space for him on the stage.

Lately i’m listening a lot to DADAROMA and Mejibray, i really like these two bands and i think they will be considered the best bands on vkei scene on the future. So please pay attention to them.

Best band ever, no - it’s not only about Wataru, we have magnificent vocalist Kuga Shingo, super talented guitarist Takayuki Arai and the latest adquisition: the drummer Kobayashi Takaaki. 

This band mesmerizes me in terms of creativity, talent, concepts, they are wonderful and never ever disappoint!!!! Give them a try pls. 

Also, i love DEAD END/Creature Creature/Acid Black Cherry but my love for them is on standby. People who knows me knows why :^) 

3. How many j-rock concerts have you been to? (If you haven’t been to any, which band would you like to see the most in the future?)

None. The band i’d like to see the most currently is Malice Mizer, since it’s not possible, i want to see Creature Creature for reasons. 

4. Which j-rock band do you think is the most underrated?

I quote missimbalance - LIPHLICH is the most underrated band ever. Maybe some know who Wataru is but they don’t have idea who the rest of the band members are??? Honestly i’m just scared they will disband before they get big. Please support LIPHLICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here i also want to say - La’cryma Christi is underrated. They don’t deserve this because for me KOJI and HIRO are geniuses on what they do and of course the rest of the band is as well but i wanted to focus on these two because they are very important!!!! They honestly have great albums and their music didn’t get stuck, it has grown just like them and honestly that’s the best that can happen in a band. 

5. Which j-rock band do you think is the most overrated?

“X. Mediocre metal with godawful vocalist driven only by big egos.”

Ok so, i don’t fully agree since i can digest a few X Japan songs but tbh they’re not that great as people claims??? I’m not doubting their skills, i know they’re good musicians, maybe some better than others, but i don’t get the hype about them?? And i tried but this band is not for me. Also i don’t respect Yoshiki at all, i find him a very funny very miserable character (woha look it sounds like my ex)

6. Who is your ultimate bias in j-rock? Optionally: Post your most favorite picture(s) of them.

My bias is HIRO but the original bias was Kami.

7. What is your most treasured j-rock related memory?

How i met my friends here??? Is all related to j-rock so...also thanks to jrock/vkei i started talking to this dude. Overall my most treasured jrock related memories involve my two close friends, i annoyed them so much with pictures and bands and names, idk how i’m still friends with them. 

8. How do you support and enjoy j-rock the most? Buying CDs? Going to lives? Just full on going to Japan for it?

I can’t support them very much because i have limitations to buy CD’s (my country sucks) but i’ve bought some. Also i’m always checking on them on social media (does this one even count?) well idk. I don’t do much for them and i feel bad about it. Someday i will go to a concert, i swear.

9. How does your family feel about this hobby of yours?  

They don’t care??? And they don’t know much about it, i mean, they know they are some “weirdos” but they never told me “hey don’t listen to that, it’s weird”. My sister actually follows me on twitter so she knows pretty much about my taste. My older brother makes some comments from time to time but my dad defends me saying “no but this one dude - he really knows how to act”. My dad is a big miyavi fan, he thinks everybody’s like him. 

10.What is the craziest j-rock fandom story that you have?

I can only think of that one time certain person sent me an anon message saying she was treated like shit by polish fans at a DIR EN GREY concert. Don’t know why i got that message tho.
