The people seem ready for Laurence’s Evil Ass Soup, and thus I will deliver. First, I need to establish two things. One: Vincent Beverley loves giving his wife presents. Even before they were properly courting, it was a bit of a ritual of his to bring Isobel things from London after his recruiting work. Two: Laurence was one of these presents.
The Tenebrous Tonic, Aka the Evil Soup, is essentially a mixture of liquid painkillers and a tincture suspension of Gant, along with a very small amount of Bottled Oblivion, and other trace ingredients that Laurence has never publicly revealed (do you know how hard it is to get some of this stuff out onto this rock?). As such the soup is something darker than dark should be, and far more oily than the fluid’s makeup should allow.
Now you might be asking yourself: “Astra, why does a sequencer need this dark and evil soup?” And my response would be that, well, the soup wasn’t originally designed for evil purposes. Laurence made the Tonic for Isobel, as a medication. After her accident, the excess light in her body was causing numerous problems for her - with debilitating migraines and slipping into a distant, trance like state being the worst of it. Along with being a powerful painkiller, the Tenebrous Tonic literally absorbs dawnlight, easing the worst of the symptoms in the process. That’s why Vincent brought his darling an easily indoctrinated doctor as a present - and Laurence’s skill is why Isobel was able to live as good of a life as she did after the accident.
Here’s the thing about medicines and poisons, though. It’s all in the dose.
When used as a medicine, the Tonic dosage was typically a few drops in a glass of water, semi-regularly. A large, non-diluted amount, though? Well, then you have a sedative that can drain a sequencer of Dawnlight. Not permanently, of course - they’ll recover in time. But that time is very painful, as liquid dark does not react well to a sequencer’s body trying to restore itself. It’s slow and agonizing, leaving inky ichor pouring from every orifice - And that’s where the evil comes in!
Because that makes it a very, very good tool for torturing dissenters on the Geode. Evil ass soup!
Do you think you guys are ready for the Evil Soup lore
