Going on a mission was never without risk. All of the pilots knew that before going into their X-Wings. General Leia knew that as she watched them leave, hoping they’d all make it back alive. Everytime. She hoped.
Nearly every mission, the hope worked, all of the X-Wings returned, their pilots and droids safe and sound, they’d make it to fight another day. The rest of the missions, hope failed them and the night was spent remembering the fallen.
Even then, hope reigned.
That was why, on this very mission, something felt different. Off.
Climbing onto your X-Wing, you halted on the top step of your ladder, your eyes spacing out. Thinking, wondering why this time felt different than any other time. You were doing the same sort of mission, a simple check on a possibly abandoned First Order base, but something just felt strange. You didn’t like it.
“What’s with the freeze, (YN)?”
You turned your head and saw Poe Dameron, strutting up to your X-Wing. “I don’t know. Something just doesn’t feel right this time, Poe. I’m scared to be honest with you.”
“Climb down here.”
You listened to him and climbed down until you were face to face with him, he grinned at you, his fingers stroking your chin.
“You’ll be okay, we’ll be okay. A simple mission, then we’ll be back in time for dinner.”
You put your hand on his forearm. “But, Poe, this doesn’t feel right. I don’t have a good feeling about this, and I’ve never felt this way except for my first mission ever and that ended with the people closest to me dying. I don’t like this.”
Poe was doing what he could to calm you down and get you ready for the mission. “(YN), I’m not going anywhere and neither are you. We’ll be okay. No one’s going to die on this mission, okay? Let’s just keep the hope going, okay?” He pressed a kiss to your forehead, then your lips. As he pulled away, he smiled at you, heading to his own X-Wing. “We’ll be okay, (YN), we’ll all be okay.”
You sighed, the funny feeling still not going away but climbing into your X-Wing anyways.
“(YN)!”
You turned as you put on your helmet to see Poe grinning at you. “I love you!”
You forced a smile onto your face as well. “Love you too!”
Ignoring the jeers from everyone in the hangar, you finished starting your X-Wing up, flying out just behind Poe, the mission in your sights, the bad feeling still in the pit of your stomach.
A few hours later, you found yourselves deep inside an ambush near the First Order base that you thought was abandoned. Taking out tie fighters left and right, you were beginning to feel overwhelmed.
“Poe, what do we do? There’s too many of them! We can’t even escape! What do we do?”
“Stay calm!” Poe’s voice came out strong and sturdy through the comms. “We’ll be alright. Just keep shooting and taking them down, we’ll come out on the other side together! Don’t give up!”
You closed your eyes and listened to his every word, the opened and followed his orders. Zig zagging your way out of the aim of the ties and aiming for the other set of ties in front of you.
Eventually, the ties stopped coming, you thought you were free from them.
A deep sigh of relief could be heard from nearly every pilot through the comms.
“We did it!”
Screams and shouts filled your cockpit. An honest smile appeared on your face, you made it out of the ambush, you could finally brush that feeling away.
“Let’s go home!” Poe ordered and the squadron was more than happy to follow that order. “Ready, everyone, one…two…”
*blast*
Your heart felt like it was on fire, burning like you were in the pits of hell. Breaking apart, piece by piece, emptiness soon enveloped you. You heard nothing. Saw nothing. Thought of nothing.
The scene in front of you felt like slow motion.
You recognized Kylo Ren’s starfighter. Saw it shoot a single blast. Saw the black and orange X-Wing blast into flames immediately, engulfing it, taking everything with it.
A new set of screams filled the comms.
“Poe!”
“No!”
“What?”
“(YN)?”
“(YN)!”
“(YN)!”
None of it registered though, you gave up control of your X-Wing.  A piece of your heart dissolved, you couldn’t fly your X-Wing.
Poe was gone.
Red filled your vision. Pure red. Hatred. Anger. Sadness.
“(YN)! Fly your ship! What are you doing?”
They didn’t understand, they’d never understand.
Kylo Ren didn’t shoot at any of the other X-Wings, but turned towards yours. You couldn’t see him, he could see you though. The side of his mouth tilted up in a slight smirk as he placed his hand over the weapons control.
You continued to feel nothing as Kylo Ren’s second blast hit your ship.
Only one good thing happened during the mission on that day.
Your bad feeling finally went away.
