'There’s definitely something in the water when it comes to actors and Ireland recently. As we hurtle towards the Oscars, the awards season has been a Mardi Gras for Irish talent.
Every newspaper and website is jammed with photos of this generation’s superstars.
From Barry Keoghan to Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal to Jessie Buckley and on again to Cillian Murphy, there’s no shortage of talent in Hollywood and beyond.
Everytime I see any of them on television promoting their latest, I always feel immensely proud. It helps that I’ve interviewed them in the past and happen to rate them highly as good people regardless of their extraordinary talent.
I can only imagine how proud their families must be and I hope they’re enjoying it all however vicariously. Cillian Murphy is the toast of any town he visits these days and it’s well earned.
I don’t know him other than in passing (and one interview) but he’s always very charming and I love how close he is to his family.
The fact he picked We Can Work It Out as his ultimate Desert Island disc on Radio 4 recently only increases my respect for him!
He’s extremely private and borderline introverted and yet he gives engaging interviews and is respected in the business.
His dad gave an interview to RnaG and seemed to suggest that the folks are just as proud of him as they are of all their children… proper order! Best of luck to Cillian on Oscar night, another proud moment for the clan.
I remember watching Andrew Scott as the psychotic Moriarty in the Benedict Cumberbatch reimagination of the Sherlock Holmes stories.
Andrew’s wide-eyed madness complete with soft but definite Irish lilt singled him out as one to watch and he has continued to meet all those expectations ever since.
Whether on stage in the West End – I saw him as Hamlet and he was knock out – or on the big screen with James Bond, his path has been steady and solid and so it was a great delight to watch him lauded for his role in All Of Us Strangers which has been quite rightly acclaimed by the critics. As a bonus, he’s a lovely guy with a great sense of humour.
When he came on The Late Late Show some years ago, we showed him an ad for Flahavans that he ‘starred’ in and he roared laughing.
In the green room after the show, he was with family and was a pleasure to chat with. All Of Us Strangers sees Andrew star alongside that other powerhouse and much in-demand young man, Paul Mescal.
I’ve only met Paul once and he was also a joy to engage with. He also has a close, warm family and appears to be enjoying the madness that goes with being a star of the silver screen.
Paul came to most people’s attention in Normal People and he has chosen his roles very judiciously since then. In many ways, this is only the beginning and his future – as well as his present – is extremely bright.
I used to love seeing Kerry’s Jessie Buckley, inset right, coming on the show as she has a wonderfully mischievous intelligence that she brings to so many of her acting roles.
Currently promoting Wicked Little Letters alongside co-star Olivia Coleman, Jessie always strikes me as a private person but an exceptionally pleasant person who is unlikely to suffer fools gladly!
In recent times I’ve been bowled over by her varied and authoritative presence in films like Women Talking, Men, The Lost Daughter (with Paul Mescal) and Wild Rose. If you haven’t heard her sing, look her up, you won’t be disappointed.
There is no escaping the lovable rogue, Barry Keoghan. I’ll never forget the first time I interviewed him and I suggested he might return with an Oscar to which he replied ‘Why stop at one’ and proceeded to mime the act of producing three statuettes to place on the desk! Judging from his recent performances, he mightn’t be wrong.
Although it wasn’t for everyone, I absolutely loved Saltburn which was quirky, odd and challenging.
It would have been a weaker film without the enigmatic presence of Barry who will forever be associated with graveyards and Sophie Ellis-Bextor – when you know, you know.
His appearance in The Banshees of Inisherin was one of the highlights of that movie and he can be currently seen in the latest Band of Brothers style drama, Masters of the Air.
I had a great night in the green room with Barry and his formidable granny who is so important to him.
It seems that a key to a lot of the success for these guys is family and believe me, at my less impactful level, I can concur with that sense that without family by your side to keep you afloat – and in check – you’re goosed.'

Living with Yourself - Season 1 (2019) Review
What’s better that Paul Rudd? That’s right, two Paul Rudds!
Plot: A man who is burned out on life and love undergoes a mysterious treatment, only to discover that he has been replaced by a better version of himself.
“60% of the time, it works everytime!” He has many names. He’s Brian Fantana in the Anchorman movies, he’s Ant-Man in the MCU, or, you know, he’s that guy from Wet Hot American Summer who makes out with Elizabeth Banks for no particular reason. But encompassed he is the never-ageing Paul Rudd. And no one can hate Paul Rudd. He has effortless warmth, charm and comedy chops all melded into one handsome but somehow still relatable package. He’s the Everyman figure under the Hollywood skies. Which is why he’s so fitting for the new Netflix series Living with Yourself, where he plays two versions of himself, the one encompassing all of his charmful, heightened, charismatic attributes alongside a version where he is just the normal every day guy. And of course Paul Rudd ends up being the reason to seek out this show. He does such a great job at acting both ways, and also a shout out to the visual effects and technical crew members behind this series, as through the use of modern technology they manage to have both of the Paul Rudd’s characters appear on screen simultaneously look very seamless. It actually does look like Paul Rudd has a twin brother here. Though it is just him. Or is it?........No, it’s definitely just him. I doubt that this is some kind of Hollywood conspiracy hiding a second Paul Rudd. Then again, maybe not?...
Putting Paul Rudd aside though, Living with Yourself in itself is quite the enjoyable watch, and though the idea of cloning someone and having two of the same person is not the most original idea these days, this series does successfully engage you and though it’s a bit messy here and there, overall is a good watch. It’s a mix of comedy and drama with it more leaning towards drama (or more-so melodrama), however the humour is still there, mainly due to the absurdity that comes out from certain characters that react so nonchalantly to either shocking or surprising scenarios. Another well done element was how the narrative was not always linear, with the various episodes taking perspectives of the different Paul Rudd’s, so many times we’d end up rewatching the same scene but from the point of view of a different character. I can see this getting a bit confusing to some viewers, however I seemed to have no problem following it. Also, the other main cast member is Aisling Bea, who plays Rudd’s wife, and it was nice to see the wife-character not stuck in that stereotype role, and she had a lot more to do than I anticipated and though Paul Rudd is definitely the star of this show, she very much stood her own.
All in all, Living with Yourself is an easy breezy binge watch (only 8 episodes which each episode ranging from 20-30 minutes) with a twisted side (kind of reminded me in some way of another Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet, both in tone and style) and a winning double-performance from Paul Rudd. Not the most original piece in the market, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Overall score: 7/10
