ime the #1 thing that revitalizes interest in a ship or a particular interpretation of it is people discussing it positively and passing around other people's creations. frankly 90% of the time when people start making rec lists or reblogging old art etc at least one new person jumps in. because it's fun! fandom is fun. it's not very serious. people just want to have a good time.
