Hi! I've been playing some musou spin-off games lately and really like the gameplay. I've also been wanting to get into Ro3k for a while and your blog has taught me some new things!
So I wanted to try out a dynasty warriors game, which one would you recommend I play first? Thank you <3
Thank you, I'm always glad to hear people are getting something out of my blog and it's not just me rambling into the void with maybe people occasionally rolling their eyes and going 'ugh, *them* again'.
Honestly Dynasty Warriors 8 is the best overall in the series and the one that's the most accessible other than Dynasty Warriors 9, but uh... Everyone pretty much unanimously agrees that Dynasty Warriors 9 is terrible, or at least that it's one of the weakest titles in the series, so I'd very strongly recommend against starting there.
With current platforms, dw8 is available on steam and the Nintendo switch, but it's also been on a wide variety of older platforms like ps3, ps4, ps vita, xbox 360, and xbox one. If you have a switch I'd recommend that version since it has all the dlc included in the game already, meanwhile with every other version you have to pay extra, and Dynasty Warriors is pretty egregious with nickel and diming people with paid dlc.
I'm still also pretty partial to dw3, but it's over 20 years old so it has a lot of old school jankiness and I don't know how used to that sort of thing you might be, plus it's a ps2 game and I don't know if you have access to a ps2 or are confident enough to get emulators to run it. But yeah, I'd start with dw8 and then browse through dw3, dw4, dw5, and dw7 as they may interest you.
Dw1 was just a generic 2d fighting game in the vein of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, dw2 is painful even by my standards as someone who grew up with dw3 (but to be totally fair, they were breaking new ground) and dw6 is... It's nowhere near as bad as dw9 (it's not buggy as hell, for starters) and it does have some redeeming factors, but it's still not great in terms of gameplay, and I have a very personal grudge against it for ruining my absolute favorite character. I'd say they're all still worth experiencing for some reason or another, but not as you break into the series.
