Kris is the main protagonist in Deltarune. They are a silent protagonist, controlled by the player throughout the game. The game centres around them and the other main characters, and takes place mostly in the Dark World.
They have always been a quiet person. They rarely talk to anyone, and they even if they wanted to, they wouldn’t know how to talk to people. Kris does have a few select friends that they feel comfortable around at school, such as Noelle, or Monster Kid, for example. In fact, they’ve been fairly close friends with Noelle for years, seeing as how they have known each other since they were little, and during their childhood, Kris was comfortable enough with her to pull pranks on her every now and again. Their families were rather close too, so that was another reason why they got to be so close. At least, Noelle is probably the one they’re the closest to out of all their classmates.
Susie is getting up the list in terms of closeness, too. They feel comfortable around Susie and trust her immensely now, ever since they went through the Dark World together, with Ralsei and Lancer. Before that, Kris was sort of scared of the school bully, and tended to avoid her. But they also avoided everyone else, which made it normal for them. They would have liked to give Susie a chance, but there was never an opportunity to do so until that day that Ms. Alphys sent them to get chalk from the supply closet… And the rest was history.
Speaking of the Dark World, it brought out a sense of leadership in them that they otherwise wouldn’t have found if they hadn’t needed to be a hero of the prophecy. Throughout their life, they were a ‘quiet, creepy kid’ who had trouble opening up to their peers. They always got anxious over having to talk to people, and worried about what others thought of them, often staying silent instead of actually speaking when spoken to. Some thought they were weird for it, like Berdly, while others were patient and eventually became friends with them after allowing them to become comfortable enough. In the Dark World, their leadership was a necessity. It made them feel important, and helped them become much more confident with themselves when they realized their party was looking at them to guide them on what to do. Even if their player was controlling them, which they were aware of, and didn’t necessarily appreciate, luckily they got a player that picked options they themselves would have chosen. ...The first time around, at least.
They often had trouble in the past with their self worth, since their kuya, older brother, Asriel was always so much better at everything than they were. Asriel was outgoing, friendly, smart, kind, and talented… And Kris was just his weird younger sibling. The sibling who never talked, and stared at people creepily, and did weird things at times. Of course, Kris could never hate Asriel for it. Asriel loved them so much, and always included them in everything he did even if they were reluctant about trying new things. He was always encouraging, and helped them whenever they were feeling so negative about themselves, and helped them feel not so alone. And Kris loved Asriel back, very much. They were heartbroken the day he left for college, and even if they knew it was coming, it just wasn’t fair. Everything they did, everywhere they looked, it reminded them of their brother. The two of them had gone everywhere in this town, but now it was just Kris. And they felt more alone than ever. They had gone into a depressive episode worse than anything thus far, and it was incredibly hard for them to actually get out of bed and do anything at all.
But they still tried, only to stop worrying their poor mother. Kris loves their family, and misses the days before their parents got divorced. They miss being a family. Their parents and their brother were the only family they had ever really known, since they were adopted fairly young and barely remember who their birth parents were. Even if their parents are divorced, Kris tries to visit their dad at his flower shop every now and then, and pretend that they’re still all a family.
Despite all their issues, Kris attempts to look on the bright side of things. And they do use memes to cope, with their feelings, and everything going on in their life. On the internet, they tend to find it easier to talk to people and show more emotion than a neutral expression all the time, because with typing, you can take your time or backspace to edit what you say. That sort of thing isn’t possible in real life when you talk to someone face to face. And on the internet, you can use punctuation and emoticons to get across your articulation as you type, which Kris uses extensively to make up for the fact that it’s hard for them to emote through their voice or facial expressions in real life. They tend to come across as more outgoing and friendly than they actually appear to be in person.
