The cut-scenes are hilarious and fun, but only for the first couple times. Thankfully when you use these attacks many times during combat you can just skip the cut-scene.

LAD is also one of those few games where I was genuinely gripped by the story and characters. Its vast cast of characters are diverse and fun, and just like in a good anime you love seeing the characters relationship develop. He’s intimidating and badass, but he’s also geeky and overly optimistic. He mixes the personalities of a badass Yakuza and shonen protagonist so well. Ichi only ever thinks of others, is always willing to help and always does what he sees as the right thing. Not to mention how utterly loyal this guy is, he literally sits in jail for 18 years for someone else. Ichiban and the gang are great, I’m not gonna talk about all of them individually, but they’re fun. You should play the game yourself and get to know them.

The game also absolutely oozes with charm. You can see all the love they’ve put into making this game, and there’s no better game than a game you can tell was made with love. Or y’know, it’s a game that the devs actually wanted to make. Yakuza has always been silly and over the top and it’s no different here. The game also has an impressive amount of mini-games ranging from full on games within the game, like arcade or Dragon Kart. The business minigame was kinda boring, but I did it anyway because it does reward you with some powerful moves. I tried out all the minigames and while they’re fun, they’re not as gripping as the main game. But hey, if you like playing shogi the options there, and you can get some extra goodies for playing these minigames so your spent time is rewarded.

Hmmmm, how about some faults? Dislikes? One thing I noticed instantly was that the game takes FOREVER before it really starts. The game truly starts going in chapter 3, and I’d argue it takes you all the way to chapter 5 to unlock all the fun parts of the game. I understand why the beginning is so story heavy, I get it, without it some of the stuff that happens in the middle or end wouldn’t be as impactful. But god was it tiresome to watch 20 minutes of cut-scene, walk to some place in gameplay, watch more cut-scene, then read text boxes etc... LAD is a very story heavy game, even more so than some supposed “cinematic” games. The intro of LAD has more dialogue than the whole of Ghost of Tsushima. Now, is this a fault? Not really, but I’ll complain about it anyway.

To add to my dislikes, I hated the character movement in the open world sections. They tried to make it feel “realistic”, but it feels slippery and I constantly keep running into my stupid party members or just random pedestrians. Then if there’s more than one people in front of you Ichiban just gest stuck, slamming into people. I like the attention to detail with the animations, but they make exploration not very fun. I also really didn’t like how the characters move on their own during the combat, you have no control over the movements. A few times this weird thing happened where one of my guys walked on top of an object, like a chair. Then when I go for the attack they just fall of the chair and it skips their turn. If this happens you just have to patiently wait until the character moves off of the object on their own. So yeah. Also one last thing, the dungeons are kinda boring. Just hallways full of random thugs. It serves its purpose, but eh, could’ve been done better.
