Every Brilliant Thing
Last night, I learned that people with mothers who have attempted suicide have a stronger fight or flight reflex, that Beyoncé is related to Mahler, and that sometimes a one-man interactive theatre piece is all that you need to cure you of a week of substanceless nonsense in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

Dion’s List of Every Brilliant Thing
It was March 2019 when I first saw the Manila Adaptation of a Duncan McMillan Play, “Every Brilliant Thing”. It’s a one-character play that talks about mental health awareness. It was held in Zobel De Ayala Recital Hall, May Bank Performing Arts Theatre in BGC and featured the beautiful, Teresa Herrera, as the main character.
“Every Brilliant Thing” is about a young girl who makes a list of things that’s brilliant about the world (1,000 to be exact). Every single thing that makes life worth living.
Right after the play, it got me thinking, which then, led me to having my own list . The list could be anything, from simple joys like “ice cream and chocolates”, to hearing you favourite song on the radio, to as deep as “finding your purpose”.
Sharing my current list to remind you (yes, you my readers!) that this life is beautiful and that it’s okay to cry and be sad, but make sure to dry your tears and live life, as this world is full of brilliant things to keep you going.
I hope that this will inspire you to start creating your own list.
1. Christmassy Lights in the middle of March
2. Ice Cream
3. A sight of a sleeping cat
4. Learning that your i-pod for 10 years is still working (the screen’s broken, but the music still plays)
5. Hearing Alanis Morisette’s “Hands Clean” in the morning.
6. Making my nephews’ happy.
7. Finally, getting the item you ordered online.
8. Little Surprises
9. Pizza after a long, tiring day
10. Last day of the working week, Friday!
11. Your favourite fast food meal (for this entry, it’s from Jolllibee!)
12. Theatre Fanboying
13. Going back to your first love: Reading!
14. Weekend tabletop and card games
15. Finishing a good book from your favourite author. For this entry, the book is from Gillian Flynn (Sharp Objects).
16. Waking up and realizing that you still have few more minutes to go back to sleeping.
17. Realizing that you have found your purpose. And it’s not about being successful in every aspect of your life, it’s about making the people that you truly care about happy.
18. Late Night Conversations
19. Family Vacation
20. Reconnecting with old friends
21. Watching a good movie
22. Warm, Sweet Hug
23. Singing your heart out
24. Attending concerts/gigs of your favourite local or foreign artists
25. Coffee and Milk Tea
26. Getting a handwritten note (’cause I have an old soul!)
27. Gratitude shown in different forms

31. A chat notification from your favourite person
32. Binge-watching your favourite Netflix Series

34. Cancelled Meetings (Natural High)
35. Being an inspiration to others
36. Getting a second-hand commendation

Still in rehearsals for this play...for now. And I encourage everybody to buy tickets at: https://ift.tt/38T2s2A It’s a poignant one-person interactive comedy about suicide and depression that may (or may not) open April 3. If it’s safe to open, you’re treated to a great show! If we have to cancel, at least you’ve made a donation to a small theatre and supported the arts. It’s a win-win!! Also, since these are crazy times, and in keeping with the theme of the play, if all of this unprecedented mess has got you down, don’t hesitate to reach out to a depression helpline like 800-784-2433. Or just give me a shout and we’ll nip that negativity shit in the bud! #staysafe #keepsmiling #itllbeok #everybrilliantthing #theatre #stage #supportthearts #fucoronavirus @dezartperforms #palmsprings https://ift.tt/3b1yI5p

#myeverybrilliantthing Journal review of the everybrilliantthing night – Monolog Play The monolog play is about depression. A man who grows up along with depression and the main source of depression was his mother who always wanted to commit suicide. During his childhood, he used to make himself happy, probably to convince himself that he is a happy kid by listing out his favourite things in life. This is an effective method to help someone with depression by emphasizing the happiness in his life which tells him actually he was not that miserable. Probably this is what we usually do when we encounter obstacles or unhappiness and trying to persuade ourselves that we are happy by reminding ourselves repeatedly how blessful and blissful we are. During the play, there was interaction between audience and the actor, actor chose a few person ramdomly and spontaneously on the spot to act as the character which was told by the actor. Few people were chosen to read out a group of numbered cards, I was one of them. The actor called out the number and we should be alert of what number he was shouting then we had to read the words on it out loud. These interactions were meant to get audience to be involving in the play and making them to be more understanding about the content of the play. Besides, by increasing the alertness of the audience, they will pay more attention on the play and actor. No one will really be interested in a play of depression and suicide, hence interaction is necessary. I am not a sentimental people, when I was watching this play; the uphill and downhill of the drama didn’t really touch me. However, the actor had expressed it well with rich of emotions and expressions. The changes of tone and volume when he expressed his anger and sadness; the excitement when he was happy. His emotions were contagious. Besides, I was impressed with the actor memorizing skill; he did really well at this. He was well prepared and he can remember which part what number. His improvising skill was remarkable as well. He could react to it no matter what the audience who act the character said spontaneously. This play makes me understand that a drama does not necessary to consists of a big group of actors and a lot of props, it can be as simple as monolog, as rich as monolog as well. For me, I would prefer to watch a drama with more actors, more attractive and interesting costume as well as more props because it would have more element in the content compare to monolog which is just told or act by one person.

Last week I watched a play called Every Brilliant Thing. It was among the best pieces of live art that I've seen. The story themes and execution of the play was very much to my liking. I would definitely recommend checking it out. #everybrilliantthing #theatrethreesixty (at theatrethreesixty)
