Time Lost (Rewrite) Ch 3

Pairing: Bucky Barnes/Reader

Summary: An accident during a mission sends you back in time to the second world war. There you enlist the help of Peggy Carter, Steve Rogers, and Bucky Barnes to find the object that can send her back.

A/N: This is a rewrite of an OC fic that I have been writing and been wanting to turn into a reader Fic. I'm unsure if I will be continuing the OC fic currently, I may just transfer it completely to my reader Fic. Currently 6 chapters are up of the OC fic, and I shall be posting a rewritten chapter every few days on here.

Prologue Ch 1 Ch 2

You flipped through the dossiers for the hundredth time that morning alone. The team, actually, wasn't all that bad. You had seen Falsworth in action just last year, no doubt he already had the majority of this training. There was a Harvard graduate, fluent in three languages, you wondered if he would be willing to learn a fourth. Next, a member of the resistance with an expertise in explosives. After that, an army ranger able to speak Japanese, and a man that, quite frankly, looked like he was trying to impersonate Teddy Roosevelt. All in all, they weren't nearly as bad as you had been expecting, and from first encounters, they all seemed enjoyable as well.

You paused when you flipped to Bucky’s dossier. The black and white photo really didn't do him justice. Not that the photo was bad, just that it really couldn't quite capture his eyes or his smile for that matter. Reading his dossier was like reading his exhibit in the Smithsonian, all cold facts and information that failed to perfectly reflect the man you had met just two days ago. It felt so surreal, knowing someone who was so full of life and knowing that they were going to die. You thought back to the exhibit, clearly, he wasn't supposed to die in Azzano, you thought that had sounded wrong. But for the life of you, you couldn't quite recall how he was supposed to die, just vaguely something about a train. You wondered if there was a way to prevent it.

If you even could.  Any time you tried to prevent anything, it never worked. Either way, you needed to stop worrying about him. As charming as he was, you had a job to do, a home to get back to.  And you weren't about to let some pretty eyes distract you. Especially, when those eyes belonged to someone from the god damned ‘40s.

A tug on your hair pulled you from your thoughts, making you jump. You looked back to see Bucky in the back of the Jeep you were waiting in, a boyish grin plastered on his face, and Steve rolling his eyes next to him. “Really Barnes? Pulling on girls' hair? What are you, ten?”

“Can’t argue with methods that work Doll.” He beamed, “We’ve been tryin’ to get your attention a few minutes now. And I thought I was Sergeant Barnes.”

“Last I checked, ten-year-olds don't get to be sergeants.” You said with a teasing look.

“Shoulda told him that when he enlisted,” Steve said with a smile, elbowing Bucky in the side.

You furrowed your brow, “Enlisted?” Bucky frowned, giving a nearly imperceptible shake of his head. “I’m not used to working with men who willingly enlisted.” You quickly lied. Clearly, Steve had no idea Bucky was drafted, and that was not something you were about to reveal yourself. “Are you and your men ready to go?”

“Yes, Ma’am.” Steve nodded, glancing behind his shoulder and then at Bucky, “We’re all present and accounted for.”

You smiled and nodded to the driver, “You heard the man. Shouldn't need me to tell you to get this show on the road.” The soldier grunted, and the Jeep moved forward with a jolt. “The camp is about half an hour out, but a warm meal should be waiting for everyone when we get there.”

“Sounds great,” Steve said, “Any idea on what this training will entail?”

“Nope,” You popped the ‘p’ for emphasis. “Haven't been planning it out all weekend of anything.” You looked back to see Steve slightly flushed. Smiling, you shifted in your seat to talk to them easier, “I’ve got what Phillips wants you to know, I’ve got what I know you guys need to know to survive alone in Germany, and then I’ve got whatever the hell it is Stark has cooked up for your ace team. I figure if you boys learn one or two things each during the next few weeks, were golden.”

“One or two things each?” Steve questioned, “Don't you think you're setting the bar low?”

You shook your head, “Absolutely not. This training facility is for training spies and saboteurs, people that need to be able to survive in a warzone completely and totally alone. Most of the recruits won't even make it the first two weeks. If I held your team to the same standard, over half of them would fail. It’s nothing wrong with them, the training is just that strict and we don’t have time to mess around. Hell, I would have failed it if I didn’t cheat a little.”

Bucky laughed, “You sure you should be telling us that Doll?”

“What are they going to do?” You asked, “Fire me? As much as Phillips hates me, he knows he can’t afford to fire me. It's a very interesting sense of job security.”

“I’m sure Col. Phillips doesn’t hate you,” Steve said, sounding entirely unsure himself. Peggy, no doubt, told him about the countless little squabbles you had gotten into with Col. Phillips.

“The entire reason I was assigned to train you is because Phillips thinks it will keep me out of his hair.” You said, looking out the jeep to the frostbitten countryside. You had no doubt Phillips didn't mind the idea of you freezing your ass off in the middle of winter either, just as long as he didn't have to deal with you.

“Speaking of trains,” Bucky spoke up, “I thought you said you were going to meet us on the trains, not picking us up from it.”

You looked at him with an eyebrow raised, “I was. Then I got tired of waiting and took the last train out on Friday. I don't like staying in one place long.”

“We were barely in London for a few days Doll.” His flirtatious smile made you bite back a smile of your own.

“What exactly is this ‘Doll’ nonsense?” You asked, locking eyes with Bucky. “Last I checked I wasn’t a doll.”

“You’re as pretty as one though,” He winked and your heart skipped. How someone could possibly be so damn charming, you had no idea.

“Wow.” You said, your lips finally curling upwards. “Bet you break a lot of hearts with that one.”

His face went stony as if you had accused him of something serious. “Never intentionally. I would never break a dame’s heart if I could help it.”

“You better be careful then,” You said softly, “Flirting like that is liable to break more than a few.” Something about how he said it, how earnest his voice sounded, made you want to believe him. However, you had no doubt in your mind that he had unintentionally broken many hearts.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” He said, seriousness fading only barely. He was a good man, you decided, better than most. Which only made his fate rest even more uneasily in your mind. He didn’t deserve to die. You barely knew him and still felt with all your heart that you wanted to save him.

The rest of the ride to the camp was peacefully quiet, save for a few quips back and forth between Steve and Bucky. And, as promised, dinner awaited all of them when they arrived. The length of the trip took the majority of the day, leaving the men the evening to settle in. Tomorrow would be the start of their training, and the start of a very long two months.

The next few days proved to be interesting. The commandoes quickly fell into a daily routine, in the mornings would be general physical training and combat training, mainly trying the group trying to learn how the hell to fight with a shield. The afternoons after lunch would be far more varying, the subject would change daily, covering a wide variety of topics, from picking locks to explosives and demolition. Bucky found the routine to be strangely comforting as if he were back in basic and not training to be some elite force for Captain America. Of course, his basic training never had a pretty woman supervising over it.

It was easy for Bucky to grow fond of you in the week that he had known you thus far. Fiery and sassy, You were quick to argue with just about everyone if you felt so inclined. Frankly, you reminded him of Steve in a lot of ways. Just being around you had the ability to put Bucky in a good mood. Which was exactly why he was grinning like an idiot as he and Steve trekked down to the explosives range after lunch.

You were carrying crates from a truck with Dernier as the two men approached, early for training by at least fifteen minutes. As you lifted a particularly large crate Bucky stepped in to take it from you. “I can carry it, Sergeant.” You said, refusing to give over the crate.

He gave you a cocky smile, “Sorry doll, but if my Ma found out I didn’t help a woman carry something so heavy, she’d have my hide.” You looked at him for a moment, considering his argument, before smiling and handing over the crate.

“Take it to the pile by the tables, you too Steve,” You ordered, nodding at steve who was grabbing a crate of his own. “Once you’re there, help Jacques unpack them onto the tables.” The men nodded and followed your direction, carrying the crates to the tables. They were hardly halfway there when you passed them with an even larger crate, a devilish smirk on your face. “Come on boys, at least try to keep up!”

The men stopped in their tracks, bewildered. Steve was the first to crack, laughing so hard he nearly dropped his crate. “Careful punk,” Bucky warned. “Don’t need Captain America blowing up on us.”

“I was wondering why she gave in so easy,” Steve said, regaining his composure and continuing toward the tables where you and Dernier were now unpacking various explosive chemicals.

Bucky chuckled, “Yeah, shoulda really expected something like that, huh?” He said, setting his crate next to Steve’s. Bucky looked up at you as he opened up the box, barely paying attention to what he was doing. You really was something, just about everything you did somehow managed to play on Bucky’s mind on repeat even hours after it had happened. After all the things Bucky had seen and experienced, your presence was almost ethereal, too good to be true. “She’s funny like that, ain't she. Most gals would have loved to have someone helping them.”

“Her and Peggy are cut from the same cloth,” Steve said, setting a box of TNT onto the table.

Bucky pulled wires and fuses from his crate, tearing his attention away from you. “You think so?” Bucky really didn't know Peggy well, besides when she completely rejected him at the bar, but Steve seemed head over heels for you. Bucky was pretty sure that he’d heard more about Peggy in the last few days than he had about anyone else coming from Steve.

“I don’t think she would be friends with anyone who wasn’t,” Steve said, leaning against the table. “You seem to like her though.” Bucky rolled his eyes; as if that wasn’t the most obvious statement in the world. He had been openly flirting with you since you met. Unfortunately, despite your flirting back, you seemed perfectly content keeping Bucky at a distance.

“Steve!” you called from a different table. “Toss me a bundle of TNT please.” Steve obliged, tossing the bundle with an underhand throw directly into your arms. “Thanks!” You said with a smile and a nod before turning back to Dernier.

“Why is it you get to be Steve and I’m still ‘Sergeant Barnes’?” Bucky complained. “I’m the only one she calls by rank and last name.”

Steve shrugged, “She calls Col. Phillips by rank and last name.” he said, looking over one of the TNT bundles.

“Steve,” Bucky crossed his arms, “She hates Col. Phillips.”

Steve chuckled, “I’m pretty sure she’s doing it to fuck with you, Buck. If its really bothering you, ask her to stop.” He tossed the bundle in his hand into the air, catching it again with ease. “How big do you think the explosion would be if we blew up a whole box of these?”

Bucky stared at his friend, knowing exactly what was going through his head. A boyish smile grew on Bucky’s face “You think it’ll be anything like that Fourth of July when we were teenagers?” He asked, taking the last box of TNT from the crate.

“I was thinking more along the lines of Loony Toons.” Steve said, “Big crater in the grounds, burn marks everywhere.”

Bucky laughed, he could only imagine it. Bucky took the bundle from Steve’s hands. “Only one way to find out right? I bet you a dollar it’s like the fireworks. These things are basically giant firecrackers right?” He said, taking the box and bundle out away from the tables until he was sure it was safe. After setting the box down, he lit the bundle with his lighter and threw it into the box, before backing away to what he thought was a safe distance.

Bucky glanced back at Steve as the TNT went off. He didn't have a chance to react as the force of the blast sent him flying backward. His ears rang as he blinked away the shock. He didn't feel hurt, so that was a good sign, but damn, if he didn't expect that.

“Bucky?! Holy shit are you okay?” A frantic voice asked. Still dazed, he turned his head to see you and Steve next to him. “You could have died!” You fretted over him, checking for injuries. “I thought you would have been the responsible one after Steve tried to walk to Austria. Jesus Christ. But no, here you are, almost blowing yourself up.”

“I am the responsible one.” He argued. Steve scoffed and shook his head, but didn’t try to deny it, knowing he would be proven wrong. Bucky blinked a few more times while brushing dust out of his hair until the realization struck him. “Since when do you call me Bucky?”

You scowled, “You almost got yourself killed and you're seriously focusing on what name I call you?”

Bucky smirked, “What can I say Doll, I was expecting the blast.”

You groaned, “Next time Barnes, run twice the distance you think you need to.” You rubbed your face and sighed. “What the hell were you even thinking?”

“That that punk was gonna do it if I didn’t,” He said, gesturing to Steve. You stared at Steve, who returned your inspection with a sheepish smile as if to say that Bucky was completely right. “That had a hell of a lot more kick than the fireworks. That’s for sure.”

You rolled your eyes, “We were already going to blow it up!” You tried to continue to scold, but Bucky could see the corners of your lips twitching upwards. “Seriously, I actually will get fired if I let Captain America die on my watch.”

Bucky stood up and pulled a dollar bill from his pocket, handing it to Steve. “Trust me Doll, as long as I’m alive, I’m gonna make sure Steve is too.”

Your face clouded over, “I don’t want you to die either.” You said with a level of earnestness that threw Bucky off.

“I ain’t gonna die on ya either.” He reassured, but you didn't seem to be convinced.

You took a deep breath, “Come on, the others are almost here.” You said, pointing at the three men coming down the hill. “We’ve gotta teach you all how to blow shit up without blowing yourself up in the process.”

Pairing: Bucky x Reader

On the bus, Sister Maria was in awe at how much the two of you talked. You spent every moment you could together in the last four years, but still found something to chatter about day after day. She wasn’t sure why it still surprised her to see how close you’d become, but it did.

When you reached your destination, a small lake at the edge of the forest, she instructed the children to be careful and not stray should you get lost or miss the call for lunch. Watching you and James leave, hand in hand, she knew not to worry when you slipped behind the tree line. Every field trip, it was always the same: you’d disappear for a couple of hours, and appear with a new drawing, ready to play the rest of the day away.

James found a good spot right away, with plenty of moss and patches of sunlight filtering through the trees. After getting you settled, he sat against a tree and began to take out his sketchbook.

“I’ll try to be quick,” he assured, ruffling through his bag for his pencils.

“It’s ok, I’m comfy.”

“You’re the best, you know that?” he beamed, hand already moving at a quick pace. “What do you wanna do after?”

“Ummm, can we go swimming?” you replied, keeping perfectly still.

He paused and looked up at you. He thought you looked like a fairy the way the sunlight speckled your skin. Just when he thought he couldn’t possibly find you more beautiful, you surprised him. “Oh, Doll...we can do whatever you want.”

Father Coulson looked at the couple opposite his desk in complete shock. What should have been a joyous occasion, was quickly becoming a sorrowful one.

“Are you certain?” he asked hoarsely. “Y/N is a very special girl, but she does have very specific emotional needs.”

“We know, Father. We’ve read her files and it’s dreadful, but we know she’s right for us,” Pepper Potts-Stark assured him. “We’ve discussed it, and we’re sure we want her.”

“And you, Mr. Stark?” Coulson turned his attention to Tony, praying he’d have doubts about you. “Are you in agreement with your wife?”

“Absolutely. Only seven years old and she’s reading Tolkien? A girl like that needs to be exposed to the world. It’d be a shame for her to stay until she ages out and land herself at a dead-end job simply because of a lack of opportunity.”

Coulson looked out the window to where you and James were playing, knowing it was going to be the hardest thing he’d ever have to do.

“I understand it’s not as common for older children to get adopted,” Pepper said, getting Coulson’s attention. “but an older child is best for our situation, and we’ve just fallen in love with her.” Tony took her hand and gave it a squeeze, gazing lovingly into his wife’s eyes.

There was an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach as he leaned against the wall across Coulson’s office. You hadn’t been in any fights, and you always did your chores and homework, so he couldn’t think of anything you could be in trouble for.

“JAMES!” he heard you shriek before running out the door.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, alarmed by your panicked state. You threw your arms around him and clung tightly, weeping into his neck. “Y/N, what happened?!”

“She’s been adopted,” Father Coulson answered for you, not looking the least bit pleased.

James felt his chest tighten and his throat close, eyes watering as you began to cry harder at hearing the word again. “Shhh,” he soothed. “It’s alright. Everything’s gonna be fine,” he blubbered out, barely able to contain his own sobs. He held you tighter, afraid you were going to be ripped from his arms at that moment.

When trying to convince the Starks to look at other children failed, Coulson had tried desperately to get them to consider James as well, but they were adamant they were only looking to add one to their family. Looking at the two of you, he knew it was going to be a difficult road; one that you’d each have to travel alone.

For the next couple of days, you and James were excused from your classes and your chores, and you were allowed to sleep together in the common room. Those days were full of tears, declarations of love, and promises that you’d meet again.

The day of your departure came and you and James sat on your bed, packing the last of your things in a backpack your new parents gave Coulson for you. You looked over every drawing, every photo, every memory you shared the past four years, neither able to believe it was coming to an end.

“I’ll always love you, you know that, right?” you sniffed, voice hoarse from crying.

He nodded, tears staining his shirt. “And you’ll always be my Doll.” He reached behind him, taking his stuffed wolf and placing it in your hands. “Take Winter. He’ll keep you safe.”

You inhaled his scent, praying it lasted until you were reunited. Taking your tiger from beside your pillow, you gave it to him. He tried to refuse, but you wouldn’t let him.

“It’s what I love most, besides you. He belongs with you,” you insisted.

“I’ll take good care of him,” he promised. “Write me?”

After agreeing, you both leaned in for the last kiss you’d share until you could meet again, pulling apart just before approaching footsteps revealed a despondent looking Sister Maria.

“I’m afraid it’s time,” she lamented, eyes tearing up again when she saw his wolf in your arms.

He took your hand and led you out, his grip tightening the closer you got to the front door. When he finally had to let you go, he didn’t process anything as he watched you be led away toward your new family. He didn’t register Father Coulson kneeling beside him to comfort him, or the look your ‘mom and dad’ shared when they saw him, not even the sympathetic look Brock wore as his eyes flickered between you.

Coulson remained by his side as he stayed rooted to the spot. When mealtime came around, he asked if he was hungry, only to be met with silence. Night fell, and when he told him it was time for bed, he followed without issue.

Two months passed before James got word from you. Coulson called him into his office, where he handed him a small stack of letters. If either of them thought things couldn’t get worse, they were wrong; every letter was sent without a return address. He tore open the first one and began to read.

‘My Dearest James,

I don’t know how long it will take for you to get this. I’m the jungle in Peru. They take pictures and write for a magazine so I don’t know how you will be able to write back if they never stay in one place for long. They are nice but I want to be with you. I miss you.’

He sniffled, carefully folding and placing the letter back in the envelope.

“Maybe somewhere in there she’ll tell you how you can contact her,” Coulson offered. “Please don’t lose heart, James.”

“Bucky,” he croaked.

“What was that?” Coulson leaned closer, straining to hear.

“Don’t call me James,” he asserted, voice rough from lack of use. “It’s Bucky.”

It was the only time he spoke in nearly a year. During that time, he read and reread all your letters, hoping that your next one would have a solution. He hated not being able to tell you how much he missed you back, but he was glad of your repeated promises that you’d continue to write him regardless.

“Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, welcome,” Coulson began, smiling at the young couple. “I understand you’re looking for a little girl?”

“Yes, we always wanted two children, but with our little Stephen’s ailments, we thought it best to not risk it with another natural child,” Joseph said, resting his hand over his wife’s.

Before anyone could say another word, shouting outside drew their attention, and all three ran out to see what the commotion was. Sarah found Steve on the ground with a bloody lip and immediately took him into her arms.

“Brock started it!” Bucky shouted as Coulson broke them up.

“I’m ok, Ma,” the boy assured her. “Sir, he was only helping me when the big one hit me.”

“Sister Maria, could you please escort Brock to the kitchens.” She nodded curtly and led the boy away. “You must be Stephen. This is Bucky,” he introduced the two, too relieved to hear the latter speak to pass up the opportunity. “Why don’t you show him around while I finish speaking to Mr. and Mrs. Rogers?”

Back at the office, they ended up inquiring about Bucky before asking about the girls. When they left, they listened as Steve went on and on about how great Bucky was, and even gave him his art supplies as he didn’t draw anymore. A few days later when they returned, Steve brought a folder full of drawings to show his new friend, and his parents watched as he excitedly ran toward the other boy.

“I thought you really wanted a girl?” Joseph asked, seeing the twinkle in Sarah’s eye.

“More than anything, I want a friend for Steve.” She smiled at her husband, and he pulled her into a hug.

“Alright,” he grinned as he led her to the doors. “Let’s go in and get our boy.”

Secrets - SoA: Chapter 2

Summary: Reader has lived in a life full of secrets. When her father dies unexpectedly and sends her on a trip all over the country, she finds out just how much like her father she really is.      He took his hand away slowly like he didn’t want to break that one point of skin to skin contact. You let him get situated and restart the engine before you retightened your hold on him. Over the rumble of the engine, he asked if you were ready to go and you patted him on the chest in answer. He pulled away from the side of the road easily then he really opened it up, forcing you to tighten your hold on him even more. You giggled at the rush of power. It was exhilarating every time. You didn’t know where Chibs was taking you but you didn’t much care. It felt good to ride with Chibs. Every time you loosened your hold on him, he’d make a sudden turn forcing you to squeeze him again. You would have thought it were a coincidence if you hadn’t felt his chest rumble each time.      He seemed to take you on a little ride around Charming just for a little fun, probably. Any other day you would have been fine to keep going, but, as it was, it had been a very long day. Eventually Chibs brought you back around to the side of town where you thought the motel was, instead, he stopped across from a store that still had lights on inside. The green lettering on the glass read “Scoops and Sweets.”      There were people inside that looked like families and young couples. You didn’t picture Chibs as milkshakes and burgers kind of guy. Your body had gotten stiff from just the short ride around Charming. You put your hands on Chibs shoulders and braced yourself as you gingerly got off the motorcycle.      “Ye alrigh’, lass?” he asked you seeming genuinely concerned.      You stretched out and leaned over to touch your toes. You groaned with pleasure as all of the right muscles stretched out. Standing back up straight, “Yeah. When I first started this little odyssey, I was riding twelve hours or more a day, it did a number on my back. I rode hard today and sometimes I don’t know when to take it easy. I also hurt my back when I was a kid and sometimes it bothers me.” You put your hands on your lower back and leaned backward to stretch again. “Scoops huh? They have a shower?”      Chibs chuckled as he got off his bike. “Aye, there’s an apartment upstairs and two other rooms. We now have THREE, proper functioning showers,” he said trying to sound convincing and you thought maybe it wasn’t just for you.      He led you across the street and held the door for you to go inside Scoops. You felt all of the eyes turn to you and Chibs. You must have looked like hell. Some of the girls inside were giving you the once over. You were about to ask Chibs what the hell was going on, when you finally saw the front of his kutte. He had a President patch. Shit. You knew the Sons of Anarchy were a motorcycle club and you knew that there was a hierarchy, you just didn’t know that the guy you had been hard-core flirting with was the head of said club.      “Chuckie!” Chibs bellowed as he slapped the counter a few times. “Chuckie will make whatever you want. He’s a little… odd, but good cook and a good guy.”      A squirrely looking guy came bursting through swinging doors you assumed went to a kitchen. It was hard to miss his prosthetic hands. “Hey boss!” he said with more exuberance than you cared for on an empty stomach. His eyes went to you and you registered a small nod before he turned back to Chibs.      “Chuckie, I need you to make whatever the lady likes and my usual,” Chibs told him.      The man named Chuckie took a step toward you. You leaned on the counter to talk to him, “What’s his usual?”      “Steak, medium-rare and roasted potatoes with a butter and chive drizzle. Whiskey, neat,” he said quickly.      You thought that over a minute. “I like grilled chicken. Can you work me some magic? I’m kinda starving. I’d love some potatoes, too. Ice water and a double of whatever spiced rum you have and Coke.”      “Rum preference?” the squirrely man asked.      “Sailor Jerry, if you don’t have it Captain works just right, too,” you told him.      “You got it,” he smiled.      Chuckie looked back to Chibs for direction. He gave him a slight nod. “She’s a friend of the club, Bud’s girl. How long?”      That you were “Bud’s girl” seemed to mean something, “Uh, I gotta check to see what’s thawed, but twenty-five minutes or so?”      You were still leaning on the counter when Chibs spoke to you. “That enough time?”      “Plenty,” you nodded.      Chibs motioned for you to follow him, “Bring it up, Chuckie.”      The small man nodded at Chibs, smiled at you and buzzed back into the kitchen.      Chibs led you up the stairs. When you reached the upper floor, there was an option of going into a large area that you guessed was the clubhouse or you could go around the stairs to the back to what looked like it could be an apartment. Chibs led you around to the back side. He pulled out keys to unlock the door that led into a small hall. At the end of the hall, there were three doors. Chibs went to the one in the middle, which also required a key.      Once inside the final door, you were inside the apartment he had told you about. The two windows in the room were made of solid glass bricks. The room still had the smell of fresh paint and drywall mud. The furnishings were sparse and the room itself could barely be called a living room, but there was a carpet remnant on the tile floor and some older than dirt armchairs centered in front of a tv that was attached to a wall. Behind this living space was a tiny kitchenette complete with a range, microwave, sink and a small refrigerator.      You suddenly got a weird feeling, like you were intruding. “Should I be up here? Aren’t there rules about this? I don’t know about MC’s very much, but… people were staring at me downstairs. And now I’m up here, in private space. It’s all very…intimate.”      “Aye, well, being President of the club has its perks. Don’t worry about it, lass, being Bud’s daughter makes you a friend of the club by default. If you get TM through this audit relatively unscathed, you’ll have earned it on your own.” He reached his hand around a door jamb and flicked on a light to reveal a bedroom. He stepped inside to get the light for the bathroom.      “Use what ye need, won’t bother me any,” he said leaning against the bathroom jamb. “Don’t have anything for lassies, though.”      You tentatively stepped inside his room. It was a little nicer than you had expected. Queen-sized bed, comfortable bedding, a dresser and night stand. The stark white interior of the bathroom had shone brightly. He let you pass by him. Your flirtation earlier all but forgotten as the call of his shower and hot water drowned out everything else.      “Thanks for this,” you managed to say.      He nodded, “I’ll wait for ye in the living room.”      You stopped him, “If you don’t mind, would you stay close? Talk to me?”

     “You sure about that, lass?” he asked her. Awfully ballsy to ask a stranger to do such a thing.      “Yeah, you coulda taken advantage long before we got here,” she said, “I’m sure.”      He wasn’t about to say no to the lass so he stood outside the door to give her a little privacy. He heard her looking for the towels then rustling inside the bag she’d worn in. He’d felt guilty for lusting after her earlier. She was Bud’s daughter, after all. His goddamned Catholic guilt was coming after him already. She was a good bit younger than himself, he’d thought. Had to be. He knew Bud left in ’84. (Y|N) had said she turned five in Iowa. Jesus, that made her…      “So how well did you know my dad?” she called. The water was finally running.      “Oh, pretty well. Saw him at least once a year, sometimes more. Would stay a week or so,” he answered. He didn’t know how much he should tell her. Bud had always been very careful not to mix California with Iowa. “What does your ma say about all this?”     “Haaaa,” she stepped into the shower and closed the curtain, “Well, DEBRA was less than pleased. Told me I was just like my father and to not come crying to her when it all went to shit.”      Chibs chuckled, “Aye, that sounds like Debbie.”      “Know her, too, do ya?” she called out.      He could smell his shampoo. “Aye, salty one, yer ma.”      “Yeah… salty. Hey, I can barely hear you, could you step in?” she called.      He didn’t know what to think of her. She should have been scared of him. A normal person would have been scared or insisted on privacy, but here she was in his shower and using his shampoo, door wide open and inviting him in. He stepped around the corner to stand by the sink in the bathroom.      “How long have ye been on the road?” he asked.      “Long time. Almost a year,” she said. “God, this shower is awesome.”      A year was a long time to do anything, in his book. It impressed him that she’d been on the road that long to fulfill her father’s last wish. If Bud sent her on this trip, he must have wanted her to know what it was like, being on the road, the life. He guessed there was a lot she didn’t know.      “You still there?” she called.      Chibs could smell his soap now. He told himself it wasn’t a turn on that there was a pretty woman in his dorm, using his things, in his shower… “Aye.”

     “You went quiet on me,” you quickly drug your razor over your soapy legs hoping to Christ you didn’t slice your leg open. “Sorry, I’m trying to hurry.”      “No rush,” he said.      “Hey, I’m sorry about earlier,” you said.      “Sorry? For what?” he asked.      “It’s been a while since I’ve gotten to talk to anyone,” you tried to explain away your blatant flirting. Hell, it was more than that, you’d practically offered to have sex on his bike. “I tend to run my mouth a little too much around people I like, or when I’m nervous.” Like now, shut up, dumbass.      He looked at the floor and smiled, “Flirting never hurt anyone, lass.”      He was being very sweet with you. He was probably trying to forget you even said it. You were never so bold with men, but… he’d responded to it… you thought. You finished the other leg and rinsed off.      “Chibs?” you turned off the water.      “Aye?”      “Could you hand me the towel? I left it on the counter,” you asked.      He turned around and grabbed the towel to hand to you. The opaque curtain hid everything from view as he handed the towel over the top.      “I’ll wait for you outside now,” he told you.      It didn’t take you long to get ready after that. You toweled off and wrapped your hair up in the towel when your body was dry. You had one, precious, bottle of your favorite lotion, which you slathered all over your body. It had been so long, your body just soaked it up. You pulled out your clean set of clothes and put them on. If you stayed any length of time in Charming, you were going to need more clothes. You combed through your hair and checked yourself out in the mirror. You wouldn’t win any beauty contests, but at least you were clean. After you gathered your things and stuffed them back into your bag, you turned off the light and went to find Chibs.

     He was in the small kitchenette with Chuckie. A card table had been set up and there were mouthwatering smells coming from the tray Chuckie had brought up. Your stomach rumbled in answer. It took you a moment to remember when you ate last and it was sometime the night before. You’d left for Charming before 5 that morning and had only stopped for gas. You guessed it was somewhere close to 7 or 7:15 pm.      You stepped out into the small living room wearing your skinny jeans and Led Zeppelin t-shirt when the men finally noticed your presence. You dropped your bag on the floor near one of the armchairs and went to the card table and just smelled the food. It was heavenly.      “Hi (Y|N)! I hope you like it!” Chuckie spoke to you first.      You leaned on one of the folding chairs and breathed in deeply. It was even better up close. “If it’s half as good as it smells, I’m sure I’ll love it. Thank you, Chuckie,” you said sincerely and touched his shoulder. He’d even remembered to bring your ice water and double rum and coke.      Chuckie must have followed your gaze, “We only have Captain but if you plan on staying a while, I can order Sailor Jerry.”      “No, that’s fine, Chuckie. Don’t trouble yourself over it,” you told him      “No, it’s no trouble. Maybe I can find some around Charming,” he said.      “Oh, let me give you some cash,” you turned and moved to go back to your bag for your wallet.      Chibs finally spoke up, “No, you’re a friend of the club. It’s on us.”      Chibs waived Chuckie off. You watched as the door closed behind Chuckie. It was just you and Chibs again and your mind flashed back to your flirty exchange on Chibs’ bike.      “It’s gonna get cold, love,” he said gently.      You turned to see him standing near your chair waiting for you. It warmed your heart a little to see him waiting for you. Most men you’d encountered had lost any sense of chivalry and you rarely, if ever in your life, had been on the receiving end of it. The men you’d come across either ignored you completely or were intimidated by you. Having a bunch of bikers be sweet and kind to you was something you were not used to at all.      Chibs even helped you with your chair and you checked off something on your list of things you never thought would happen. You waited for him to sit before you dug in. You took a bite of potatoes and immediately were rewarded. Chuckie was a genius. You savored the taste a moment before taking a long drink of water.      You and Chibs got a few bites into your meals before you broke the ice.      “Charming seems like a town where people are born, raised and die.” Chibs nodded. “So, how does a guy like you get here?”      He looked up at you from under his eyebrows, “A guy like me?”

     He wasn’t sure what to make of (Y|N), or what she meant by ‘a guy like him’. Her straightforward way could be off-putting to some people, but he rather appreciated it. There had been too much lying and conspiring in the club. The way she took everything in stride reminded him of her da. Hell, she barely batted an eye at Chuckie and his hands, and she’d ridden in the truck cab with Happy and Tig and wasn’t running for the hills.      “Yeah, a guy from Scotland. It’s a bit of a stark contrast,” she elaborated. “This part of California definitely isn’t lush and green like Scotland.”      “Aye, well, I was a member of a charter in Belfast. A worthless piece of shite got me thrown out and since I knew some of the Redwood Originals, I decided to come here, get patched over,” he explained. He wasn’t quite ready to tell her about Fi and Jimmy O. She seemed cool, but there was no telling what she could or couldn’t handle yet.      “But across an ocean?” she wasn’t going to let it go.      “If I stayed in Ireland, my family could have been used against me,” he said.      He could almost see the gears in her head spinning. There were a lot of questions in there roiling just below the surface. She wanted to dig deeper, but she chose a different route.      “Is that why my parents moved to Iowa? Were they hiding from something, protecting me?”      Yeah, he liked (Y|N), alright. She coulda asked about his family, but she probably saw that he didn’t want to talk about it. She went straight to the point bothering her most. It was goddamned refreshing. “I didn’t know your da when he ran nomad. Yer ma was JT’s sister. She begged JT to let Buddy out, no strings. JT and the club eventually agreed to it and Buddy’s way of paying back was working the books for the club. He would come out when he was needed… for projects and whatnot.”      He took a swig of his whiskey and watched her gears spin some more.

ok so armin’s senior year of high school has just ended and holy fuck is that exciting. he’s so exCITED WOAH. he’s so excited. so. so like the plan is that hanji and levi are gonna be coming to pick armin up in about a week so he’s super pumped because idk he’s like. DONE WITH HIGH SCHOOL? WOAH. and he gets to hang out with his dorky but cool cousin and her scary fiancé and his BEST BRO EREN RIGHT? WRONG.

So eren is a really loyal dude right like. he’d do anything for armin ok. and it’s not his fault that like. his mom didn’t tell him she had signed him and mikasa up for some cooking classes man idk. (ANNIE WOULD SOMEHOW ALSO BE INVOLVED SO THEN EREN COULD HAVE A SUMMER ROMANCE TOO OK) carla is somehow involved in this whole “eren can’t come with u and hanji on ur trip this year” thing and armin is like. oh. fuck. so he’s like. well shit. cause he needs a new friend to bring and armin has lots of friends but. not really. ones that he’d necessarily want to spend like. 2 weeks with. in a car. with his nutty cousin yo. so him and eren have a sleep over every night that week to make up for the fact that they won’t be spending 2 weeks of a roadtrip together and armin’s like “EREN WHO THE FUCKLE DO I BRING?” and eren’s like. “shit idk reiner?” and armin’s like “reiner’s at his lakehouse with bert” and eren does the eyebrow thing and armin does the eyebrow thing back cause everyone knows reiner and bert are doing the do. so then eren’s like “YO I GOT IT. CONNIE” and armin’s like. HOLY SHIT YEAH THAT COULD WORK CONNIE’S RAD. BUT HEY. GUESS WHAT. TURNS OUT. CONNIE IS ON HIS UNCLE’S RANCH IN THE COUNTRY. LIKE. JEAN ON THE PHONE.” and marco’s like. lol ok. so then it’s like: "y-yo" "JEAN!" armin yells into the reciever causing jean to cringe cause WOAH NOW BOY UR VOICE IS LOUD "jeez, didn’t anyone ever tell u to use your inside voice? god my ears are ringing." and like armin ignores jean’s obvious annoyance. (annoyance that helped get them over the awkward greetings hell yea) "sorry i just. i can’t believe i didn’t think of this sooner!" "think of what?" jean and armin are not NOT friends but that’s not to go and say they’re GOOD friends either. at least. well. it’s more of a. they get along well and there’s a slice of sexual tension between the two that neither really understood so they both always just dismissed it as something weird "would you like to join me on a road trip with my cousin and her fiance?" armin can hear marco laughing (laughing at how jean’s mouth drops because what) "w-what?? is this some. dumb joke or?" "no jean it’s-" and then jean hears like. struggling and then he hears eren’s voice saying something like "NO. "Armin. yes. whatever the thing you asked? yes." and he realizes too late that he let his competitive impulses take over and like. now he’s just agreed to go on a road trip with a (very very cute holy fuck armin is so cute and nice u don’t understand) acquaintance  right after he’s finally just graduated from high school. but jean is not a man to go back on his word and he did already agree so. he decides he’s not going to back out. no matter what. so then armin like. legit fuckin…sQUEALS and he’s like “THANK U THANK U THANK U THANK U THANK U OH MY GOD JEAN WE’RE GONNA HAVE A LOT OF FUN I PROMISE I PROMISE OMFGMFGOMFGOM THANK THANK” and he like hangs up (he doesn’t even tell jean the details omf) and then marco is smiling at jean like, marco has a fricken apron on that says something really lame cause marco’s the type to wear a lame apron (and still look so kawaii) and he like and he’s like "looks like ur summer isn’t gonna be as boring as you thought huh?" cause jean really didn’t have any summer plans and jean’s like "omf ur so lame pls stop" and then him and marco eat mac n cheese and watch something like icarly because why the fuck not ————————————————————————————————- ok boom, fast forward to the day before the trip, so armin texts jean a list of the things he’ll probs want to bring and jean is like woah hello but he’s like “nah it’s cool” so jean is actually kind of excited about this trip because it’s either this or being bored so?? but anyways so hanji and levi arrive that night and they’re in armin’s house hanging out and hanji’s like “yo wheres eren?” cause usually he also stays there over night the day before they leave cause they leave at like 5 am to beat traffic idk levi’s weird about timing and driving and whatever. and armin’s like "oh no eren can’t actually come" and hanji like. does a double take and even levi is like. woah there cause he knows HE wouldn’t want to be a third wheel to his and hanji’s lovefest. and armin smiles and is like "don’t worry yo i got another boy lined up" and hanji is just. so smart she leans in and raises a brow and she’s like "ooh is he cute?" and armin blushes because "HANJI WHAT" because he never thought of jean that way? (liar) sure he might have stared a bit too long when in gym jean would take off his shirt after running for a long time or during the swimming unit he MAY or MAY not have stared at jean’s abs for longer than would classify it as a glance but. BUT HEY NOW. so hanji like. ruffles armin’s hair and she’s like “omf he IS cute isn’t he lemme see a picture!!!” and armin’s lIKE HANJI. but she gives him a noogie until he shows her pictures and jean has REALLY lame facebook pictures so armin’s blushing and all like “i swear he looks better in person ok” and hanji is like. laugh snorting because oh my god his selfies. but then there’s a picture of him and marco at the beach and she’s like “oh hey, he actually is hot, hello handsome” (then she does like a cat call or something) and levi’s like grinding his teeth because he gets jealous so easily but him and hanji already had a long talk about it (after he tried to punch a dude for trying to buy hanji a drink omg and hanji was like LEVI U LITTLE IDIOT but they still had wild sex that night cause they’re weird about stuff BUT THEN THE NEXT MORNING THEY HAD THE TALK U KNOW) and she’s like if u try and be a dick again like that i’ll punch ur dick and not in a sexual way so he’s like. oh shit no thanks. so anyways then. armin can’t even sleep that night because now he’s. having second thoughts because hanji reminded him that he kind. of. likes jean? not really! but. like he could. see himself kissing him. and liking it. a lot. like. BOOM BAM SUN IS UP THE DAY HAS BEGUN so it’s the morning now. and armin is blushing and tired and hanji is loud and hairy and levi is like. everyone be quiet i’m trying to loudly pack up the van while mumbling to myself. and jean’s mom drops him off and she’s like “be a good kid ok” and jean’s like “yo i’ll try ma” and she smacks the back of his head and stares at him and he’s like “OMF OK CALM DOWN” and she drives away and then jean is kind of awkwardly standing by levi’s van and levi just. YANKS jean’s stuff outta his arms and is grumbling to himself and he packs it in the car. and hanji runs over and is like. “WOAH JEAN UR TALLER IN PERSON HUH?” and jean’s like “do i know you?” and hanji is like “no but armin showed me ur facebook pics last night” and armin LIKE. BODY SLAMS INTO HANJI AND HE’SLIKE “NO I DIDN’T HANJI STOP WHAT THE HECK HANJI LOL VER FUNNY” and jean can’t help but laugh because. maybe this won’t be as awkward as he thought and armin is so extra cute today oh. what is this. so they all finally get in the car and hanji is sitting with levi in the front and armin and jean are sitting in the roomy back and levi is like. “so jean, since you’re new to all this, i’m going to tell you the rules” and hanji like. turns around and in her best levi impression she’s like “there are no rules” and armin laughs cause hanji has the best levi impression like omf hanji. and levi groans and is like "YES THERE ARE RULES." and hanji is like. "omf ur such a baby" so then levi lists this HUGE jumble of rules like "no touching the car, no dirt in the car, no anything in the car, ur now allowed in the car" and jean is just so fuckin confused and hanji is like, just zoning out and then jean feels a hand on his arm and he looks at armin and armin’s like "just ignore him, he always does this, i think he’s just nervous about the trip so it helps him to pretend he has control over things he kind of really doesn’t." and jean nods because hey he can understand that kind of thing. so then they let levi talk himself out and then the car ride is pretty silent actually until they make their first stop to rest for the night it’s this nice little place and armin and jean share a room and levi and hanji share a room and like. jean and armin are about to go into their room and they see hanji grab levi’s ass as they’re closing the door to their own room and jean blushes so hard and armin just sighs because this is so normal for him. so he gets the door open and they awkwardly stand in their room and thank god there are 2 separate beds. so they get ready for bed and jean tries not to think about how kawaii armin looks in his baggy pjs and the fact that “ARMIN U. WEAR. GLASSES?” and armin’s like “usually i wear contacts” and jean’s like WOWOWOWOWOOW cause jean sure does like glasses. anyways. they go to sleep and it’s a rather uneventful night for them both (not for levi and hanji though ;) ;) ;) ) so then they set out on the road again but this day is much less awkward so hanji starts talking about the scenery and then levi makes a poop joke, like a real ass joke about shitting, and usually the car is silent after he makes them but JEAN. JEAN. FUCKING. LAUGHS. LIKE. SNORTS LIKE. AND. LEVI GASPS AND IS LIKE “FINALLY SOMEONE WHO. KNOWS REAL COMEDY UP IN HERE” and armin and hanji groan and jean is like “OMFG POOP” and then they laugh about bad jokes like. jean fuckin loses it and armin wants to be annoyed but jean’s laugh is actually really cute. so anyways then they’re just driving and it all looks so pretty and jean starts asking dumb questions like. “would u rather be a short man who looks like a man, or a tall guy who still looks like a kid” and THEN HE REALIZES HE. SHOULDn’T HAVE SAID THAT CAUSE. LEVI AND. THEN. HANJI STARTS. LOSING IT. SHE LAUGHS SO HARD SHE’S LIKE “I”M GONNA PEE MY PANTS OH MY GOD” and levi is like “fuck u jean” and jean’s lke NO I SWEAR. I SWEAR I DIDN’T MEAN U. and he just keeps digging a deeper hole for himself and he’s like motherfuck me and my big mouth and armin is laughing too though and that’s cute. and then they all settle down and jean’s like omf and then they get some fries and they sing or something idk. then they sleep in the car that night. ————— IDK SO. LOTS OF THINGS HAPPEN. Why would not having central climate control be a disqualifying factor in getting home insurance coverage?
