Hey, I need your help with something. I have been letting myslef look at comments so many times and I felt that I'm looking for the negative ones about SU and I jump in to speak in defence about it and its not a good feeling for me because I mostly thought people had the wrong idea about it and Im not good at it when it comes to typing things down (I prefer talking face to face about it). Should I not worry about what people think of SU or how much approval the show been getting?
That would be my advice, yes.
First of all, there’s always going to be differences in taste. Some people will never like the show, others will always love it. You can’t change that by arguing, even if people claim that their emotional preferences are somehow grounded in logical justifications. Attacking their reasons won’t change their feelings. And it’s fine for them to feel that way.
Use your own platform to highlight what you love about the show. Share that love with other people who love the show, and with people who haven’t seen it yet. Some of them will love it too. But don’t waste time “arguing” with people who just feel differently. They were never going to support the show, and that’s okay. Don’t water a lifeless kindergarten when you’ve got the whole earth out there.
Second, there’s always going to be people who believe stupid and awful things. I’m not even going to repeat some of the worst stuff I’ve heard people say about the show, but it’s bad. Not just factually wrong, but grounded in an ethics of hatred that goes against everything I believe in. But I don’t engage those people, because I’m never going to get through to them.
Consider this: you could spend literally every hour of every day arguing online with people who believe the earth is flat. And at the end, you’d feel tired and awful, and they’d still believe that the earth is flat. It’s not worth your time. Let it go.
Third, if you want to support the show, great! There are some wonderful ways to do that. Building up the fan base, by creating and sharing fan art, fan fiction, and fan theories is one. Even if you don’t feel up to making something yourself, encouraging and supporting other creators is free and easy! You can also support the show directly by watching it on the app, buying merch, engaging with SU content on CN’s social media, and boosting all the metrics they use to decide that it’s profitable.
However, if you want to support the show, one thing that actually doesn’t matter is how many people dislike it. All that matters is how many people like the show. Those are the people who create fan works, who buy merch, who watch the show. If that group gets bigger, the show does better. But if overnight you doubled the number of people who hate the show, it would be exactly as profitable and exactly as popular as before.
The people who hate the show don’t matter. Period. Let them be.
Personally, I don’t even go into the tags on tumblr. I follow a bunch of great blogs and some terrific artists that give me all the Steven Universe content I could want, and it’s all a joy to browse through. I would love for you to have that joy, always, when you log in too. But it won’t happen if you continue to seek out negative content. I understand the appeal, but please believe me when I say it’s not worth it.
