What!!!!#or if ur trying to do the harvest festival then u should at least have the large bread with the mouse!!#something abt the concept of thanksgiving just makes me angry. I don't even know what it's actually about#every time I see a recipe that's like 'perfect for thanksgiving!!' I have to leave it#I think I make a similar post to this every year tbh

Secular Celebrations - Autumnal Equinox
From there, we move into the fall and come to the Autumnal Equinox and my favorite time of year. September brings the second harvest - more fruit, lots of gourds, and the rest of those autumn vegetables. Of course, there are some plants that will continue on well into the winter, but this is when most of the produce comes off the vine, and we begin storing them up for the colder months. The year begins to slide more noticeably toward winter, the leaves start to turn, and when the equinox comes, the day and night are equal once again.
This is a time for restoring balance. If things are feeling off in your home or in your life, take steps to restore that equilibrium and re-establish your routines. Cleanse your home of any lingering “summer grump” and make sure you air the place out once the weather isn’t so blazingly hot. I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of fresh autumn air in the house, especially when it has that little tinge of burning leaves to it? Mm, chef kiss, perfection. I mean, in 2020, we’re all sick of that because of the wildfires, but STILL. Do that end-of-summer cleanout, get ready for back-to-school if you have little ones, and start changing out your wardrobe.
There’s still time for a bit of last-blast outdoor fun, if you’re so inclined. Provided that the weather cooperates, you might plan one more beach day or camping trip or afternoon at the lake. Visit a farmer’s market or a harvest festival and have some fun. Visit that pick-your-own-produce farm again and bring from some seasonal fruits and veggies. I love apple-picking at this time of year, and it’s probably the thing I miss most about living in Pennsylvania. (Also, Stayman Winesaps are the tastiest apples on earth, and nothing you can say will change my mind.)
Go on a walk or a drive to view the changing leaves. Oh, and mark the day you first see leaves starting to turn. That’s a fun thing I do every year, I call it Turning Day. If there are maple trees in your area, those will probably be the ones that change first, so look for those. You can use fall foliage, acorns, and gourds to start decorating your home - real or silk, whatever works best for you.
This is another big holiday for bonfires as well - honestly, bonfires are pretty much part of ALL the holidays, they’re just fun - so if you can attend one or have one safely, that’s something to consider. Or maybe just have one more picnic or cookout before the weather turns too chilly for it to be feasible. Have a fall feast for your near-and-dear with lots of lovely seasonal produce and pies, maybe a roast fowl or brisket or fish, whatever you like best.
Speaking of food, this is my baking season. It’s finally cool enough to have the oven going without suffocating myself in the heat or running up a four-figure energy bill trying to keep the indoor temperature manageable. So if you’re a fan of baking, why not give that a try? There are plenty of recipes to choose from, like soda bread, pumpkin bread, spice cake, maple cookies, and so on.
Keep that sense of community going by making a little bit extra and sharing it with friends and neighbors. Some people do their autumn feasting around the equinox instead of in November, when Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. There is a holiday in September called Harvest Home that directly corresponds to this, so if you’d rather skip Thanksgiving but you still want to feast, that’s something to look into.
Start stocking your shelves for the winter too. Put up pickles and preserves. Refresh your canned goods and non-perishables, maybe save a few bottles of whatever libations you made earlier in the year. If you have kids, celebrate the idea of this gathering-in with a scavenger hunt. Have them help you find signs of autumn or needful items for the pantry.
As the year turns and the harvest comes in, meditate upon your own personal harvest. This might be a journaling activity. You’ve sown, you’ve tended, you’ve reaped. Now what is your harvest? What have you learned from the year? What abundance has entered your life? What have you lost? What surprised you? What didn’t go quite as you planned? What are you thankful for? What do you regret?
Meditate also upon the balance in your life. Do things FEEL balanced? Or are they out of whack? If so, how can you address this? Do you feel you need to change things, or is it more prudent to let them reach equilibrium on their own? What outside factors are affecting that balance, and what can you reasonably affect on your own?

How I think Slicemav are with presents. 🎁
Slider:
the most thoughtful person ever. He saw that you were upset and called up your mother, who forwarded the call to grandma to get her special cookie recipe to make you feel better. But within that call, he now has thanksgiving plans with your family and promised to take grandma out to the farmers market next week because she was shy; and he can’t have that, now can he!
Of course he can’t cook for shit, so he’s extra sweet to Ice and gives him a million kisses, asking politely for him to make the cookies. He tells him the entire story (every detail) and ice is so lost in the information that he gets a migraine. After some Tylenol and a nap, he’s more than happy to make those cookies.
Maverick:
does NOT know what to do with a present to save his life. He would be handed a present and start tearing up.
“It’s your birthday present!”
“I.. you already gave me mine?”
“??”
“Your hug?”
*melting*
But also, he’s so touched that you bought him something or made him something or whatever that he’s holding back tears, and is so careful about unwrapping it because “you went to all that trouble and it’s beautiful.”
Now, giving someone else a present? Asks what you want, gets it. He’s always listening and writes down things you’ve said you wanted. He likes the way people’s face light up when they see it.
Iceman:
somehow knows the perfect gift for everyone. King of gift giving. Of course, he’s all *chill* about it. Sometimes doesn’t even put his name as “from” and leaves it blank. Bradley thought Santa gave him all of his coolest presents at Christmas but it was Ice the whole time.
The navy thinks he’s cold and has no heart, but he knows every little thing about you. Slider still has yet to figure out how he does it, but every time he asks, ice just goes “I thought it was obvious?”
“Honey.. no.. it’s not. I had no idea Coyote baked?? No one did???” -mav
“When he gets stressed he pushes on his thighs like he’s kneading bread,” ice shrugs, “and If you’re ever seen him eat desert, you’d notice he’s very slow and takes the time to taste it. I’ve seen him write notes down.”
He is the Sherlock Holmes of the navy.
“But Phoenix never told anyone about wanting to learn to draw??” -Bradley
“She’s got that eye for detail,” ice shrugged, “I had a hunch.”
Everyone: shook
But let’s be honest, none of them want any gifts. The only gift is your love and time. Especially Ice, does not want gifts but is so grateful anyway. He’s much rather have you over for dinner; same with Slider. Affection is his gift.

NERVOUS ROBIN D.G.
Request: Could I please get Young justice Robin/dick Grayson with a quiet reserved s/o? So about her is that she's part of the team but has no power and she get flustered easily when she's around with Robin and only him because she has crush on him and she try to not blushes and stay serious.
Warning: fluff
A/N: I changed this into a headcanon I thought it worked a little better, I hope you don’t mind! (Also this was written around the time of American Thanksgiving lmao sorry for the theme)
- Joining the team was not your idea. At all. It was Oliver's. He had taken you in when you were young and taught you everything that you knew right alongside Roy. Since Speedy was joining, that seemed to automatically mean that you were as well
- you knew of the other teens joining. KF, Robin, Aqualad - it was an exciting time for all of them. You on the other hand? Much more content sticking at Ollie's side and not packed in a team with kids you didn't even know. Even if Roy was going to be there, it didn't make you feel any better about joining.
- And then Roy left, deeming that he was too good for the team and when you tried to leave right alongside him? Oliver stopped you. You were too young to go off on your own, too young to try and fight crime with someone as hot headed as Roy. So you stayed.
- Sure, the other guys made you feel at home. Robin, Wally -Conner and M'gann. It was okay being on the team, but they were always trying to get you to join with everything. Time alone was time well spent - and they couldn't seem to get that through their heads.
- Maybe it was because of the same self-reservation that you had but it was easy to start to crush on Robin. His ridiculous laugh, the way that he always liked to prove he was right in a way that didn't make him look like a jerk. Not to mention how adorable he was too.
- Training with him was the worst. Often times you got paired with him since you were without powers as well. It seemed like a fair fight considering you were both on the same skill level. However, Dinah always forgot to consider just how much of a mess you were around him.
- It was impossible to stay on the task at hand when he was there - especially when you knew he was watching you. You always found yourself turning your gaze towards him. Even the split second looks had you messing up completely.
- The absolute WORST when Conner decides to say something about you being near Robin.
- "Why's your heart beating so fast"
- and of course Wally has to overhear and join in, totally teasing you that maybe you really do have a crush on Robin. He doesn't know just how right he is, but he continues on nonetheless until you storm out of the room.
- Never hearing the end of it from Wally for weeks after that. He catches you looking over at Robin and he's by your side asking when you plan to propose to him. Or point out how flustered you are every time you have to work together.
- it's the comments over the comms that really get to you because Robin is the only one to not understand what's going on.
- '(Y/N) got any big plans later tonight? Rob? No? hmm, maybe you should do something together'
- 'Wow (Y/N) I dig the new suit. What do you think, Rob?'
- It's just past subtle that it drives you crazy
- The team suddenly putting you and Robin together for literally everything. You're not sure if it's because they're trying to get you together or because they just like to see how flustered you are around him.
- Robin inviting you to his home on thanksgiving because you and Oliver are having a huge fight and you have nowhere else to go.
- Nearly fainting when you see him without his suit and mask because holy shit is this boy beautiful. The most stunning blue eyes that you had ever seen in your entire life and it's impossible not to get lost in them. It's even harder not to be a mess around him without your own mask to hide behind
- Dick getting way to excited to show you around the batcave. ~grabbing your hand~ to drag you around everywhere in the massive manor and in the cave. He doesn't realize he's still holding it as you run into Bruce and they have an entire conversation while you're still holding his hand - not wanting to let go and to shocked to
- Bruce thinking it's adorable when Dick's cheeks get rosy upon realizing that he didn't let go of you. Unfortunately not noticing that he blushed.
- Starting to hang out way more after that when training. Still being a mess around him but now Wally's started to pick up that Dick is too.
- Now he's teasing the both of you separately and it becomes the most entertaining thing to see you both stumble over your words or mess up while doing something because of what he says. Wally brings out the popcorn every time you spar together now because it's just so entertaining to watch you both be hesitant around each other.
- Dick finally has enough of Wally's comments and jokes one day.
- Completely out of the blue you're in the kitchen with M'gann trying to help her make some new recipe that she wanted to try when Dick comes storming into the kitchen with Wally right behind. Neither of you have any time to ask what's going on before Dick grabs your cheeks and kisses you
- You don't have time to react out of your shocked state. M'gann drops the spoon she's holding and Wally's absolutely losing his shit at the site that he's seeing.
- By the time he pulls away you've finally realized what happens. Dick, your crush, kissed you completely randomly and completely perfectly. He glares at Wally before leaving the room, not explaining himself to anyone - not even you.
- Wally speeding you so you're standing only inches away from your chests touching. No one's around this time. Dick's cheeks are bright red and he's trying his best to avoid your gaze.
- "I really like you" The words aren't meant to completely blurt out but now you've done it and there's no taking it back. It's painful waiting for him to respond. Decades, hours, seconds pass and he still doesn't say anything. Maybe he doesn't need to - maybe another kiss will give you the answer you need. And it does.
- Dick's hesitant this time. he doesn't have the surge of confidence and frustration this time around. His hands latch onto your lips, pulling you closer. Its far more perfect than the last one - and this time you're actually able to kiss him back without being in complete shock.
- "I like you too"
- Wally is incredibly proud of himself for finally getting you guys together after that painfully long wait.

ok my soft concept
i know it's out of season but it's thanksgiving on the show I'm watching itskgsgjsfjsfjajfa
imagine it's november and you're living in london w harry and just found out you wouldn't be able to go home to your family for Thanksgiving :( and you're trying to act like it's not that big of a deal bc you don't want to upset him or make him think you don't want to be around him but it's really getting to you bc it's the first year you didn't get to go home 😔
so then on thanksgiving morning he sends you off to have a girls day with gemma to get your mind off things
and then as soon as you leave he calls anne in a panic like "MOM you have to come help me cook" so ofc she agrees and they find a whole bunch of traditional recipes and try to make ones he's heard you talk about your family making 😔 and all day he's texting gemma like "keep her busy for a few more hours we're still working!!!!!!"
and by the time you and gemma head home you're a little suspicious bc she's been looking at her phone a lot but you don't mention it bc you just want to get home to harry and cuddle him 😔
and then you get inside and you're like ????????? bc it smells super good
and then you walk into the kitchen and he's wearing a silly apron AND HAS HIS HAIR TIED UP IN THE LITTLE SPROUT
and he looks up and kind of gets all shy and says "i know it's not the same but I just wanted to make you feel a little better, I hate seeing you so sad"
and you almost start crying bc he's so sweet 😔 and he freaks out and he's like "no don't cry! I'm so sorry should I not have done this?" and you go to him and hug him and tell him it's perfect and you love him so much for this 😔😔😔😔😔😔 and then the 4 of you have a wonderful meal together and you make it a tradition and do this every year😌
PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE OH MY GOD IM GOING TO CRY HOW SWEEEEEET

GRATITUDE & ATTITUDE — THANKSGIVING WITH RAPPER!JAKE HEADCANONS.
anonymous asked: what would rapper jake be like at Thanksgiving?
warnings: confused canadian tries to understand american thanksgiving, multiple mentions of food/eating, daddy kink, brief mentions of smut (as usual).
notes: i apologize if i’m not representing thanksgiving properly, i tried to do as much research as possible though! for those who don’t have this holiday/don’t associate with the religious aspects of it (like me!), this is pretty much focused on family gatherings and food, so you’re good! i found the gifs in a gif hunt and idk who made them, i’m sorry i can’t credit the creators. i was listening to mirrorball by taylor swift and glee’s let’s have a kiki/turkey lurkey so... yeah don’t vibe with me this time! happy thanksgiving to everyone who celebrate it! <3
food. this holiday was about food and nobody could tell rapper!jake otherwise.
the mountain of grocery bags and produce in the kitchen proved his point. he was determined to turn into all of those friendly people he watched on food network. you know, the kind eyed grandmas and the men with funky glasses? he even got an aprin. and new oven mits in which his hands actually fit. he had all of the recipes printed out on paper, then taped on the cabinets’ doors. he had the biggest smile on his face.
“when we’ll have kids, imma cook them yummy dinners every night.” he greeted you with this promise when you walked in the kitchen, rubbing your tired eyes.
you checked the clock on the microwave. it was 8: 20 am.
jake caught up on your confusion. “i waited in the parking lot to be the first person there as they open, ordered all the food online last night when you were sleeping. i picked up a cute table center piece on my way back. isn’t it lovely?”
lovely. that’s not a word he used often.who was this man and where was your boyfriend?
you turned your head and found a very autumn looking arrangement of candles and wood and other golden elements. you nodded slowly, approving of his choice.
you turned your heels, ready to go back to bed and ignore the upcoming chaos in the kitchen as lil chef jakey-jake was about to cook for an entire army.
“don’t you wanna be a good girl and help daddy cook for your parents?”
soon enough you two were wearing matching aprins, you had jake’s hands printed in flour on your butt as he fed you slices of apple while putting the pie together.
it was barely two in the afternoon and everything was ready or finishing to cook. jake made sure to let you taste test everything. he didn’t want you to be too full, so he let you snack on some froot loops around lunch time. he couldn’t deal with a hangry hostess, tonight was too special for that!
you started to yawn and get cranky and quite frankly, he was not doing any better.
“let’s nap before we feast like royalty” he suggested.
you cleaned the kitchen at the speed of lightning.
jake grabbed your hand and pulled you upstairs. he tucked you in. you spooned him, hiding your hands under his t-shirt to keep them warm as you too quickly fell asleep. he was too exhausted to laugh at your cold fingers toasting against his skin.
the alarm ran so loud that jake jumped off the bed (he caught himself before falling on the floor).
“wake up, buttercup.”
you earned a kiss on your temple, basically the only corner of skin exposed from under the blankets.
you growled in response, missing the warmth of his body.
“oh, is that so? you’re not gonna let daddy make you feel good in the shower?”
won’t you look at that, your pyjama was tossed on the floor, steam was leaving the glass shower and your back was pressed against the tiles as jake held you up and fucked into you, slow and deep.
“stuffin’ you up so good” jake laughed, as both of you were close to your release.
you exploded in laughter, jake echoing your gleeful giggles. he went to rub your sensitive clit and a few seconds later, you were screaming out his name.
the two of you got dressed. he wore a black shirt. you wore something that matched. you put on light makeup and perfume as jake watched your reflection on the steamy mirror, his arms wrapped around your waist.
“tonight is going to be perfect.” you reassure him, making him grin.
the door bell rang and jake ran down the stairs. he let you fix his rebellious collar and press a kiss on the tip of his nose.
the door slammed open. “mom, dad! so good to see you!” jake greeted your parents, remembering how you introduced them to him the first time.
another wave of laughter. jake noticed that you had the same happy wrinkles at the corner of your eyes as your mother. he loved that new detail about you.
“gather around, the food is ready!” jake said and your mom offered to help him serve the plates. he accepted, thankful for an extra pair of hands.
the table was quickly covered with mashed potatoes, chicken (he didn’t want to roast a whole turkey for the four of you), roasted veggies, salad, gravy, bread and basically everything you could think of (he kept the froot loops on the counter in case you didn’t like his newfound recipes).
jake buttered a slice of bread for you, earning a smile from your father.
you gave him a bite of stuffing and the two of you laughed at his cheesy dirty talk from earlier.
jake leaned closer to your ear, when your parents discussed some encounter with wild turkeys they had on their way home. it was picturesque, but jake’s words snapped you out of this reverie.
“all the food is good, but your pussy’s still my favourite flavour.”
you choked on your sip of hot apple cider for a quick second.
this man had no shame.
rapper!jake started to talk to your dad about the hockey season. and to your mom about the carrot cake recipe he found that he wanted to make with her.
you blinked away a happy tear.
the rest of thanksgiving dinner went smoothly. you guys went to watch television, some old scenes of charlie brown were playing. jake switched to music instead, the smooth jazz of louis armstrong brought your dad to invite you for a slow dance around living room. jake did the same with your mother.
eventually, you tried to switch partners and your dad ended up dancing with jake. they both went all in, suddenly thinking they were in a royal ballroom.
it was after the four of you stopped laughing that your mother suggested they drove back home.
it had started to snow outside, pretty hard.
“why don’t you stay? we have a guest room.”
the we made you feel all happy inside. it was jake’s house, he worked so hard to afford it. yet, he considered it yours too.
“we don’t want to bother the lovebirds!” your mom tried to deny the invitation.
“family is never a reason to be bothered.”
these words came from jake.
the same jake who, not too long ago, didn’t even speak to his own family. he didn’t want to have anything to do with them.
the same jake who was about to break down at the thought of meeting your parents.
the same jake who thought would never have a family of his own.
your parents smiled and thanked the both of you.
jake gave your dad some merch and sweatpants for sleep wear. your mom took your favourite pyjama set.
they were fast asleep.
and you thought jake would be too, after such an exhausting day of running around.
“what are you thinking about, my love?” you asked.
jake shrugged, moving his arm so you could snuggle up against him. you rested your head on his naked chest. the beat of his heart was peaceful, almost enchanting.it was your favourite musi.
“we didn’t say what we were thankful for.” he remembered the essential tradition of thanksgiving.
“then say it now.” you chuckled softly.
“i’m thankful for you,” he poked your nose, making you scrunch it adorably. “thankful i get to see you smile, get to hug you and kiss you, get to sing to you until you sleep...”
he kept going with millions of other details.
“i’m thankful for the wonderful human that you are, jacob.”
strangely, he was both tearing up and getting a boner at the same time. you can’t blame him, there’s something very hot about being open and vulnerable.
you moved on top of him, trailing kisses on his jawline and neck, on that sweet spot that drove him wild right under his ear. you painted his collarbone with more kisses.
your pace slowed down, your body was falling against his.
he wrapped his arms around you, making sure you were safe and sound as he heard you snoring slightly.
he laughed through his nose, not bothering to turn the lamp off.
he opened his mouth one last time that evening, to whisper those three magical words:
“i love you.”

To be fair, TK wasn’t sure what to expect for his first holiday season in Austin. But he has his dad, he has his team, he has Carlos—and it’s enough.
@911giftexchange for @teaamfreewill — i hope you enjoy this AJ, and have a happy holiday season!!! 💗
ALSO AVAILABLE ON AO3!!
“It just doesn’t feel right without snow.”
Paul looks at him with that ever-present, all-knowing look in his eyes, before letting out a sigh and nodding. “You’re telling me, New York.”
“Like,” TK starts, fully aware that he’s gravitating into rambling status at this point, but he can never stop himself. He rests a foot on the bottom rung of the shopping cart, leaning his weight against the handle as Paul analyzes the nutritional facts on two different brands of steel-cut oats. “It doesn’t feel like the holidays without at least one storm that makes you question your existence.”
Humming in agreement, Paul puts one package back on the shelf and tosses the other in the cart, before hesitating and grabbing a few more of the pale-blue bags before they're good to move on to produce. When there's a comfortable lull in conversation, both of them crossing items off the list his dad's very carefully crafted for the bi-weekly shopping trips, TK lets his mind drift to holidays past.
His parents wanted him to grow up with both the tradition of celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas, but as he grew older, Decembers tended to blur into every other month. He'd always call his mom if he was working late, smiling down at photos she'd send him of her attempts to perfect her grandmother's recipe for sufganiyot, always making his stomach rumble. And, even if she was out of the city at the time, she'd always send him a box of homemade pastries and a card with a lengthy message inscribed inside that'd make him feel warmed from the inside out. And his dad would always make him at least come for a dinner on the twenty-fifth, even if dinner was just takeout eaten straight out of the cartons while they watched the Christmas parade he always recorded.
They were simple traditions, but they were theirs.
In Austin, TK's slowly getting used to calling it home. The snow thing had been the first to strike him, because while he's seen his fair share of strange Texan weather, not waking up to white covering every surface and bitter cold nipping at his skin has been throwing him for a loop.
"Earth to TK," Paul says, tossing him a bell pepper. TK catches it, rolling his eyes playfully at his friend. "We should start figuring out a place and time for the Not-Christmas dinner."
"Carlos offered his place," TK says, without thinking. Paul just grins at him.
"That seems to be going well, huh?" Paul asks, hip-checking TK as they walk side-by-side to the checkout. TK feels his face go warm, though he busies himself with adjusting the rolled sleeves of his black t-shirt, printed with the 126 crest over his heart. Paul just musses up his hair before ducking out of grasp for retaliation, sidling up to the cashier and offering his big smile at her while she begins to ring them up. "I'm happy for you, kid. We all are."
TK does smile at that, because it's the one shining light in all of this. He hadn't been sure what a holiday season with a new boyfriend would be like, especially when every single one of his friends were also friends with said boyfriend, but they've all been relatively tame. No shoving them under the mistletoe yet, which TK guesses is only a matter of time.
"Anyway," Paul says, and TK sticks his hands into his pockets, suddenly glad Marjan isn't here to poke at his pink cheeks.
"Anyway," TK agrees. "Carlos did offer to let us use his place, though. He suggested the twenty-second, so that way people could still go see their families."
"The twenty-second it is," Paul smiles, already typing the date into their group chat, followed by five question marks. Because Carlos thought ahead for these things, TK knows they're all already going to be on one of their twenty-four-hour off periods; Carlos works that morning but will be home by noon, and as long as TK has detailed instructions, he won't have a problem starting the food early.
A small knot forms deep in TK's chest, even though he knows there's still two weeks before the proposed group dinner. He just thanks the cashier after paying with the credit card his dad gave him before they left the station an hour ago, and they head back out into the sunny, barely-cool, snowless, December afternoon.
***
TK's just hanging up with his mom, absently kicking at a rock in the lot just outside the bay doors, when he feels someone creep up behind him.
He doesn't even blink, though, because he smells sandalwood and tangy citrus and is smiling before he feels familiar arms settle around him. He tells his mom I love you, too, and stuffs his phone in his pocket and leans back into Carlos' touch, for half a moment, before turning in his arms and pressing their foreheads together.
"Did you know you're impossible to shop for?"
TK grins, and presses a quick kiss to the corner of Carlos' mouth before pulling back enough to look him in the eye. "What a welcoming statement after not seeing each other for twenty-seven hours."
Carlos rolls his eyes affectionately, and tightens his hold around TK's middle. "I missed you, Ty."
"I missed you too," TK grins, cupping Carlos' face between his palms and finally closing the distance between them properly. "But I do take offence to that. I'm perfect in every way."
Carlos huffs a laugh against his mouth and presses in for one more kiss, before scraping his blunt nails against the fine hairs at TK's nape. "Believe me, I know, sweetheart."
He feels a pleasant ripple shoot through him, and TK's struck again by the fact that he gets to have this. He's close enough to see the flecks of gold in Carlos' warm brown eyes, and he wonders how it's only been three months because he feels like he's known him forever. He thinks of decorating with Marjan today and the sudden pang of homesickness that he couldn't quite explain.
"You okay?" Carlos asks, because he can read even the most microscopic of his expressions like the back of his own hand. TK covers it up with a smile.
"Yeah, of course," TK brushes his thumb along Carlos' jaw, before standing back, dragging his hand down the length of Carlos' arm so he could grab his hand and tangle their fingers together. "Come on, I'll buy you dinner."
"My prince," Carlos plays along, hand over his heart, but there's still a look in his eyes. He runs his thumb over the backs of TK's knuckles, and when TK squeezes his hand tighter, he gets a small smile in return.

They'd realized sometime between Thanksgiving and the first of December that they'd have to celebrate as a team, this year.
The non-denominational, coined-by-Mateo "Not-Christmas Dinner" idea was agreed upon pretty quickly, and TK is beyond excited to start creating new traditions with his family. But he's struggling, is the thing. He wouldn't ever mention it to anyone because he hates stressing them out, and though he has no urge to do anything stupid because for the first time in a while he's happy—like, really fucking happy—he can't help but to feel like everything has to be perfect.
It boils down to this: he misses his mom like crazy, even though she stayed with him and his dad for a couple weeks back in September when he was still healing. He's finally getting back on track with his dad, after long nights of hashing things out about his childhood. And he and Alex never did much for the holidays save for giving each other a couple gifts because they could never work out how to spend an equal amount of time with both of their families—which, in hindsight, is yet another element of the two and a half years TK lost to the man he thought was his soulmate—but now with Carlos he just wants things to be special. They already have plans to visit Carlos' mom and sisters on Christmas Eve, and Owen had lovingly coerced Carlos into a Strand family dinner on Christmas Day.
It just feels like a lot.
"Hey, are you okay?" Marjan asks, bumping his shoulder with hers as she strolls into Carlos' kitchen. The twenty-second kind of crept up on TK, and now he's here, attempting to hold down the fort while Carlos makes a last-minute trip to the store. His kitchen's a homey space, and, like the rest of his boyfriend's place, it's tastefully decorated with garland and candles and little angel statues that have been passed down through his family. There's a photo of the two of them on Carlos' fridge, pressed together at a pumpkin patch they'd spent a date night at back in October, and TK gets a little lost in the memory. Marjan has to nudge him a little harder to get him to snap back into it. "TK?"
"Oh, hey," TK smiles at her, and goes back to making sure that the green beans don't stick to the bottom of the pan. She claims a burner of her own to keep her tagine warm, leaning back against the counter with her arms folded over her chest.
"You're spacing out a bit," Marjan says, and when TK keeps his eyes trained on the vegetables he swore he could handle, she just makes a small noise and places a hand on his shoulder. "You've been a little quiet lately."
There's a pause, where neither of them say anything, before Marjan drops her voice a little and adds:
"Hey, you know you can talk to me, right?"
"I'm just—" TK shakes his head and bites at the inside of his cheek, turning down the heat to try and kill more time.
He doesn't know how to tell her—and the rest of them—that he's both so thankful for this family he's found and so, so terrified of messing it all up. Thankfully, he doesn't have to; there's a knock at the door and Marjan offers to get it, leaving TK alone with a soft smile. He sighs, and closes his eyes for a long moment.
***
After food has been served, and gifts have been exchanged, they all sit around Carlos' living room. The conversations overlap like they always do, and TK sits comfortably under the glow of the light from the tree and the warmth of Carlos' arm thrown over his shoulder. He's slowly picking at a piece of Grace's pecan pie, and he knows he should just let himself get lost in the moment, but he can't. He taps his foot at a staccato beat against the floor, and even when Carlos throws him a questioning look and settles his hand on TK's knee, he doesn't stop.
He finally excuses himself ten minutes later.
Carlos' place has a nice little backyard area, where they've all gathered for parties and after-work hangouts countless times. It's a little chilly as the sun's gone down, and TK sighs out loud and sees his breath puff out in front of him. He smiles just a little, and kicks his foot against the porch, dropping down onto the steps.
He's expecting Carlos to come after him; or maybe Marjan, or his dad. Instead it's Grace who settles down next to him, a hand splayed over her four-month pregnant belly.
"Honey," she starts, and TK ducks his head. His eyes burn, and he roughly sniffs. "TK. You don't have to hide whatever you're thinking from us."
He takes a deep breath, and scrubs a hand down his face. And then he says: "I don't want to bring down your mood."
Grace gives him one of her warm smiles. "TK, every day I'm reminded why you and my husband get along so well."
TK rolls his eyes and gently nudges her arm with his shoulder.
"Now tell me what's wrong," Grace says, and TK rubs the back of his neck before he starts talking.
He tells her everything. About how the holidays usually meant bickering with Alex. How it meant celebrating with both of his parents, sure, but also dealing with awkward dinners with their new significant others. About how he hasn't felt this good since he was a kid and he doesn't want to fuck it up.
"You could never fuck it up," Grace tells him, squeezing his hand that she's been holding between both of hers. TK meets her eyes and finds nothing but sincerity, nothing but the warmth and reassurance that always seems to be there. "Never. And know that all of us in there don't care about perfect as long as we have you, as long as we're all together. Now, I'm going to send that beautiful man of yours out here so you can talk to him, because he's been worried."
At that exact moment, they hear the telltale creak of the door opening; both of them glance over their shoulders and spot Carlos.
He moves to leave, lifting a hand in apology. "Sorry to interrupt—"
"I was just leaving," Grace says, getting to her feet and squeezing TK's shoulder for a brief moment. When she disappears back into the house, Carlos takes her spot, and wordlessly presses a lingering kiss to TK's temple.
"Ty," Carlos starts, and TK stops him in his tracks with a kiss.
"I'm sorry for being distant, lately," TK murmurs half against his lips, because even though he knows that Carlos has seen him pretty close to his worst he hates the thought of pulling him down; of making him unhappy. "I'm just—it's been so long since I've had this. And I've never had someone like you. I was so worried about not messing things up that I got in my head."
"Hey," Carlos whispers, getting TK to look him in the eye. "Please don't apologize, okay? We're all healthy, and here together—that's what matters, right? That I get to have you by my side through it all?"
Could you blame TK for surging forward to kiss him again?
When they part, TK whispers: "Thank you."
"What for?" Carlos asks, eyes glinting with confusion.
"For being you," TK says, knowing how it sounds.
Carlos shakes his head, moving to lace their fingers together.
They move in unison to press their foreheads together, and TK whispers, "I love you so much. I just needed you to know that."
"Of course I do," Carlos says, smiling into it when he kisses TK before speaking again. "I love you too. And I don't want you to feel like you have to—to hide what you're feeling."
TK just lets himself have what he wants, what he needs in the moment, and it's this: Carlos' mouth against his, again and again.
***
They re-enter the party ten minutes later, and all eyes are on them when they slip into the living room.
TK opens his mouth to make some big declaration, but Marjan catches his eye, and then Paul. Then it's his dad who dramatically clears his throat and points above the two of them.
Because, of course, there's mistletoe fastened to the doorway above them.
"I hate you all," TK mutters, to which Judd yells lies! and Paul yells something about getting on with it. So, TK does; he presses his palms to either side of Carlos' face and grins at him before closing the distance between them. There's a whoop from someone for effect, and then when they pull apart Marjan pulls him down next to her on the loveseat so he can be thrown into a conversation about fighting mall elves they'd had to deal with during a call yesterday.
Looking around the room, he realizes he had nothing to worry about at all. And, to be fair, TK wasn't sure what to expect for his first holiday season in Austin. But he has his dad, he has his team, he has Carlos—and it's enough.

Riley doesn’t intend on making any enemies when she starts working at the restaurant.
It just sort of . . . happens.
She’d like to think she has the supposed “Big Five” personality traits on lockdown—she’s a very agreeable person, incredibly open with others, positively extroverted, astute in conscientiousness, and her neuroticism . . .
Well, she could maybe stand to work on it a bit, but can she be calm? Absolutely.
There’s just something about Farkle Minkus that makes her want to drive a spork into her leg, though.
It’s a weird sort of dichotomy they form together, despite not being too different from one another. They hold the same sort of power in the restaurant—she’s a host, he’s a busser, and they both get paid minimum wage. While she guides the guests around the restaurant, he cleans up tables and spills, and there should be no reason for the animosity that they harbor for another.
If you ask Riley, she’d chalk it up to her first busy night at the restaurant. The night had bogged her down as she ran around the restaurant, seating guests and refilling anything they needed if she happened to be passing by them. At one point, she’d been asked to help bus tables—something she knew she’d be awful at—and he’d strolled up to her while she was trying to pick up plates, taking them from her grasp forcefully.
“Look, if you’re going to help, then actually do something useful. You’re moving about as slow as a turtle and it’s infuriating,” he had grumbled to her. “Why don’t you go be a good host and greet people with a fake smile and annoying personality?”
Yeah, that’d cinch the nail in the coffin for anyone, she assumes.
How dare he say she had an annoying personality! She was a freakin’ charm to have around, and most of the people working at the restaurant already got along with her. Why was it so hard for him to accept that fact?
Riley didn’t wish to dwell on it, so she didn’t. But she did make enemies with Farkle that night, point blank.
//
“Hey Minkus, mind bussing those tables I asked you to bus twenty minutes ago?” Riley calls into the headset. She’d been fed up with another busy night, and Farkle’s attitude was not cutting it for her. She nearly startled when he rounded the corner, though, his permanent look of disdain greeting her.
“You know, bussers don’t just clean tables. In fact, they actually have to listen when managers ask them to do other tasks around the restaurant,” he says, adjusting the sleeves of his black button-up that he had pushed up his forearms.
“And you know I need tables, yeah? We’re on a wait,” Riley argues back. He gives her one last glare before disappearing back into the dining rooms, and Riley hears someone whistle behind her back.
“You know you egg him on just as much as he does you, right?” Maya, one of the servers who’s quickly become her best friend at the restaurant, tells her, leaning against the host stand. Riley shakes her head.
“Not true. He started it, anyway!”
“And you can’t let bygones be bygones?”
“Why on earth should I do that?” Riley asks, incredulous. Maya shrugs.
“I dunno. Besides the fact that the two of you have undeniable chemistry? Or similar personalities? Or the same friend groups around here?”
“What do you mean ‘undeniable chemistry’? We hate each other!” Riley exclaims.
“We often harbor love under the guise of hatred,” Maya states, earning her a disgusted expression from Riley.
“Don’t you have tables to serve?”
“After your boyfriend cleans them up, yeah.”
“He’s not my boyfriend!!” Riley shouts after her friend as she leaves, the sound of chuckling fading off around the corner.
//
“So Zay calls out and you’re the only person who can fill his role as a host tonight?” Riley asks Farkle, exasperated. It’s a little strange to see him sans apron, standing at the host stand like he’s the same level as her.
He’s not.
“Imagine, being ungrateful that someone was able to pick up his shift so you wouldn’t be on your own. Are you always this disagreeable in the morning or is that just how you are normally?” he counters.
Riley moves to continue their argument, but guests wander up to the host stand, so she drops it for the sake of doing the job she’s being paid for. She insists on seating them in the system and then guiding them to their table, sure that Farkle will mess it up somehow. When she returns, he’s got a smug grin on his face that causes her blood to boil.
“What’s the face for?” she prods.
“Well, if I didn’t have one it’d be quite disturbing, frankly,” he snarks back. Riley would throw things at him, if she didn’t have to keep her cool for the sake of the job.
“What’s the face for?” she tries again, this time more forcefully.
“I like that you won’t let me do anything. I could make your job ten times easier by seating tables for you, but you insist on taking care of everything. Are you really that stubborn?”
“Kettle meet pot,” she huffs, turning away from him with arms crossed and nose stuck high in the air. He simply laughs and the two of them return to silence soon after, refusing to engage any further in conversation for the rest of their shifts.
//
The restaurant holds a potluck for Thanksgiving two days before the actual holiday. It’s a tradition set by the general manager that a lot of people enjoy engaging in, and after further convincing from Maya, Riley decides to attend. Besides, Lucas is going to be there, and she may have the smallest, tiniest of crushes on him.
Whatever. Doesn’t matter.
Riley does prepare a dish at the behest of Maya (Maya could probably goad her into anything at this point, really). She wants to do macaroni and cheese, but when she hears that Darby is going to she attempts to figure something else out, but Maya reassures her.
“Darby makes it from the box,” she explains, “And it’s always the worst. I love her, but she finds a way to ruin even the simplest of foods.”
“So it’s really okay if I make macaroni and cheese? My grandma really does have an awesome recipe for it . . .”
“Riley,” Maya says, stern, “I think I speak for everyone when I say please, for the love of god make that mac. We need quality mac this year for once.”
She doesn’t work that day, so Maya tells her she’ll pick her up right before the potluck. Riley sleeps in and then spends the rest of her hours preparing the macaroni and cheese fresh, spending a little bit of the extra time for showering, dressing, and maybe putting on a little bit of makeup.
Riley pulls the dish out of the oven with a minute to spare, grabbing a box to hold it in so it doesn’t burn her and the rest of her things, heading out the door when she receives a message from Maya telling her that she’s waiting outside. She pulls together all her things and makes a mad dash for the door, joining her friend inside the car so that they can drive off to their workplace.
Riley has to admit she’s a bit nervous—she’s been working there only a couple of months, and while she does get along with everyone, she knows she’s still new, still not quite a perfect fit in this little carefully constructed family. She hopes that this will aid to ease her anxiety and make her feel a little more solidified in their group and that she’ll just have a good time in general. This job . . . she’s grown to care for it, more than she’d care to admit.
They pull up outside the restaurant and Riley jumps out once they’ve parked, grabbing her macaroni and cheese and tailing behind Maya once she’s retrieved her own dessert from the back seat of the car. The doors click as they lock and the two of them walk inside, Maya with confidence and Riley a tad skittish behind her. They greet the two hosts manning the front, having to miss out on the celebration for a moment, and then head towards the back dining room where their party is taking place.
“Maya! Riley! Glad you two could join us,” their general manager Jon greets them. “You two can go ahead and set your food down at the tables over there and we’ll get ready to eat in a few minutes.”
They nod and do as they’re told, Riley splitting off from Maya to set her food on the table closest to her while Maya sets her dish down on the dessert table. She waits to take cue from Maya, embarrassed to be tailing her like a dog, but shakes the feeling as Maya takes a seat at one of the booths. Riley joins her, realizing one moment too late that Maya’s chatting up Farkle Minkus of all people.
“You bring anything for us, Minkus?” Maya asks, engaging him in conversation. Farkle snorts.
“God no. The last thing we need is me exploding a kitchen from my poor cooking skills. There’s a reason I’m a busser and not on the line.”
“Don’t you have a cook or something rich people can afford who can do things for you?” Maya snarks.
“Would you laugh if I say yes?” Farkle sighs, earning him a cackle from Maya.
Riley tries to restrain her curiosity, but it’s already been piqued—if Farkle is rich, then why is he working as a busser at a chain restaurant?
Whatever. Riley doesn’t care.
She spends the rest of Maya and Farkle’s conversation on the outside listening in, not really wanting to participate in conversation with Farkle because he’s, well, Farkle. Maya seems to respect her feelings, not pestering her to join, and for that Riley is thankful. She just waits in her seat patiently, ready for the eating portion of their get-together to start. Unfortunately, she has to wait another fifteen minutes for that, but half-way through she gets distracted because of Lucas’ appearance, trying her best to work up the courage to talk to him. He’s still in his work uniform—black button-up and black work pants, the sleeves rolled up mid-forearm—and it shouldn’t work for him but it does.
Right as she finally rises from her seat, deciding that she will talk to him, their general manager announces that it’s time for them to eat. He pulls them all into a quick little prayer before allowing people to start grabbing food, and by then Lucas is caught up in his own conversation with the people he’s friends with at work. Riley sighs, giving up as she joins Maya and Farkle at the buffet line their manager put together. She piles the food on her plate and then sits back down at their little booth, uncharacteristically quiet as Maya and Farkle sit back down.
“Okay, I swear to you that Yogi’s changed the recipe for this green bean casserole. It actually tastes good this year,” Maya says.
“I’ll take your word for it. I don’t do mushrooms,” Farkle tells her, wrinkling his nose at it.
“Do you not like mushrooms either, Riley?” Maya asks her, finally inviting her in to start talking. Riley shakes her head.
“No, I just don’t really like green bean casserole.”
“Holy shit,” Farkle interjects through a mouthful of food, “Darby’s really stepped it up with the macaroni and cheese. This stuff tastes like heaven.”
Riley stops, her mouth dropping open in surprise at his words. Maya’s mouth turns upwards into a brilliant, shit-eating grin that Riley just wants to wipe off her face but knows she can’t. It’s too late; the damage is done.
“That’s because Darby didn’t make it,” Maya tells him, the excitement unrestrained in her voice, “Riley did.”
Farkle registers her words, his chewing slowing down as realization dawns on his face. She half-expects him to spit it out, to retract his statement or do something else drastic, but he doesn’t. He swallows the mouthful of macaroni and cheese, sets his fork down, and meeting Riley’s gaze says, “This is really, really fantastic macaroni and cheese, Riley. Some of the best I’ve ever had. Good job.”
Riley will admit, she didn’t think Farkle would be the one to extend the olive branch between the two of them, but he does it all the same. She recognizes that her response to him will make or break the situation, but she’s not one to drop a compliment, especially one that has her blushing furiously. She can’t control it, not really, and she definitely can’t control the bashful smile that graces her face, so what the hell.
“Thanks, Farkle. I’m glad you enjoy it,” she tells him sincerely, her words startling him, too. But then he beams a grin back and Riley knows she can no longer be mad at him, not after that.
Damnit.
//
Friendship with Farkle after Thanksgiving is practically flawless. Riley doesn’t want to tell Maya she’s right because Maya will hold it over her for the rest of forever, but Riley and Farkle really do have a lot in common. He makes it easy to be his friend, so much so that she forgets she was ever mad at him and that she didn’t like him at all. They spend a good portion of their day complaining about someone or something from work and when they aren’t talking about that, they’re talking about outer space or their favorite tv shows or just anything.
It’s kind of ridiculous, but then again, Riley absolutely loves it. It makes working at least ten times easier now that they get along, but if anyone notices it, they don’t mention it aloud. The restaurant moves on with its day as if nothing has changed, but Riley is privy to the shift.
Regardless, their friendship is still brand new, still hanging on by a tumultuous thread. It’s something Riley can’t quite define, but it feels like the foundations are still shaky, like there’s something else that rests in the air between them when their conversations reach a lull during a slow day.
Maya voices her opinion on the subject after Riley mentions it while they’re getting ready for a costume party Sarah’s holding (“Halloween in December,” Sarah tells Riley, “It’s kinda my thing.”) Maya’s finished putting on her sexy ringmaster costume and has moved onto applying her makeup while Riley tries to wrangle and curl her hair into submission.
“It’s because you like him,” Maya tells her, working on her winged eyeliner with Bobby Fisher-like intensity.
“What? No I don’t,” Riley insists. “Farkle and I just became friends.”
“And this is supposed to deter my opinion on that? I already told you before that you had undeniable chemistry. But now you two actually get along, so now you can’t hide it.”
Riley has half a mind to make Maya mess up her eyeliner, but she’s not cruel. She’ll just remain disgruntled about the matter for the rest of the night.
Maya helps Riley with the rest of her angel costume after her hair is curled completely, and once they’ve pulled Riley’s wings on, they grab their things and leave Maya’s house. Maya drives them to the party and when they pull up, Riley has to admit that while she knew a lot of people were going to attend the party, she didn’t know this many people would be here. Cars line the empty space around Sarah’s place and partygoers are already hanging out on the lawn, enjoying themselves as the music blasts from inside the house.
Riley feels a nervous energy course within her as they walk up the sidewalk to the house. She’s excited for the party, she really is, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t anxious about it, too. All of that washes away the moment she and Maya step inside, their friends greeting them happily and complimenting their costumes.
“Oh my god, you guys finally made it!” Zay exclaims, a wide grin on his face. “Those costumes are dope as hell!”
“Thanks, of course they are,” Maya says, winking at him slyly. “But what are you supposed to be?”
Zay flashes his teeth, revealing a set of pointed fangs on the top and bottom.
“Teen Wolf!”
“That is both lame and fantastic,” Maya laughs, then turns to search the room. “Farkle here yet?”
“Yeah, last I saw he was playing beer pong with Lucas and couple of others. Why don’t you two get some drinks and then we’ll head that way,” he suggests. Maya nods and they follow him to what Riley supposes is the kitchen. He mixes them up a couple of drinks and hands them off to them, chuckling when Riley sniffs hers and scrunches her nose in disgust.
“Jeez, how much alcohol did you put in this, Zay?” she asks.
“Enough. Now drink up and let’s go, Matthews!”
She sighs and gives in, stealing a sip as they make their way to where Farkle and Lucas are. She almost gags at the pungent liquor smell again but drinks it anyway. It’s a good thing, too, because when they find the supposed beer pong tournament, it’s not Lucas who has her heart racing.
“Maya, Farkle greets her when he spots her, but when his gaze lands on Riley, he practically beams. “Riley! I’m so glad you could make it!”
Words seem to fail Riley right now. She’s not sure why she’s feeling so off but seeing Farkle dressed as gladiator has sent her off-kilter. He looks so damn good in his costume and she starts debating whether or not she should abandon the drink Zay gave her altogether if it’s making her act like this.
“Hey, Farkle, good to see you, too,” she finally manages awkwardly, huffing in embarrassment before backing her drink like there’s no tomorrow. So much for abandoning it.
“Whoa,” Maya gasps, rushing over to Riley’s side, “What are you doing?! I thought you told me earlier you were going to take it easy.”
“I lied. Wanna make me another drink? I’m gonna need it,” she insists, ushering Maya back to the kitchen. As soon as they’ve made it, Maya shakes Riley off of her, glaring at her.
“What the hell was that about?!” she yells. Riley opens her mouth to say something, but then closes it again as she goes through the five stages of grief in her mind. After a moment of silence and Maya waving her hand sporadically in Riley’s face to bring her back to earth, she says,
“I couldn’t be there anymore. I need more alcohol if I’m going to get through this night.”
“I don’t get why you’re acting like this? You were fine until we—” Maya pauses, then realization dawns on her face, “Oh!”
“Maya—”
“Holy shit, you don’t wanna go back there because you think Farkle looks hot in his costume. This is hilarious.”
“No it’s not! I don’t have feelings for him, I just think he looks . . . really good,” Riley tries, but Maya’s already grinning like an idiot.
“Now we have to get back there. I’m going to try so hard to set the two of you up it’s not even funny.”
“I don’t need your help! I don’t wanna be set up!” Riley exclaims, but it’s too late. Her decision has been made.
“I’ll make you a drink and then I’m gonna get you alone with Farkle. It’s gonna be fantastic.”
Riley groans, knowing she’s fighting a losing battle.
She does loosen up a bit after she’s finished off the second drink, but that doesn’t mean she’s gonna give into her friend’s plan.
And Maya does follow up on her promise despite Riley’s every effort to make it hard for them to be alone—after many failed attempts, she forces them in a spin the bottle circle. Riley only agrees to it because she’s borderline drunk and doesn’t care about a quick kiss with anyone, but when she finds out that whoever the bottle lands on is sent to the closet for seven minutes in heaven, she tries to run.
But it’s too late.
Maya’s spinning skills are off the charts, the bottle ends landing between Riley and Farkle. Everyone whoops and hollers at them except for Riley and Farkle themselves, but they still go follow the rules begrudgingly, allowing themselves to be shoved into a closet for everyone else’s entertainment.
“Go get ‘em, tiger!” Maya’s muffled yell erupts from beyond the closed door. Riley sighs.
“You know we don’t have to do anything in here, right?” Farkle tells her. “I’m not gonna force you to do something you don’t want to do.”
“Really?” Riley asks, spinning to turn and look at him, but that ends up being a mistake. She’d misjudged just how small the closet was, and she ends up pressed against him, his arms gripping her biceps when she stumbles a bit from the alcohol.
Whatever words Farkle wanted to say have since died on his lips, if his comically large eyes were anything to go by. Riley knows she’s gone though when she finds herself lost in the stormy gray irises of his, her brain actually entertaining the thought of kissing him.
It wouldn’t be so bad if I did, right? her brain asks her.
Right, her heart agrees.
Testing a theory, Riley’s hands rise to rest gently against Farkle’s cheeks. His breath stutters as soon as her fingers grace his skin, and she knows there’s no going back when she glances at his mouth before leaning in.
This is such a bad idea, she tells herself, But I don’t think I care enough to stop it.
Right when mouth is only centimeters away from Farkle’s, close enough that she can feel his breath ghosting her lips, the closet door swings open. Farkle and Riley jump apart, and whatever spell befell her has washed away, leaving confusion in its wake.
“Alright you two, get out so the rest of us can have some fun!” someone shouts. Riley nods and ditches Farkle, grabbing Maya by the arm and tugging her outside urgently.
“What the hell, Riley?” Maya grumbles as soon as they stop in what Riley deems is a quiet area.
“I think I have a crush on Farkle. I have a crush on Farkle, don’t I?” Riley asks.
“No shit,” Maya says, rolling her eyes, “You kind of made that abundantly clear tonight. But after all that hard work I went through you didn’t even follow through!”
“How can you tell?” Riley frowns.
“Because your lipstick is still perfectly fine, red as can be. If you kissed him, it’d be smudged and all over his mouth. Plus, I don’t really think Farkle would’ve survived it. I think he’d probably need to sit down for the next century in order to process it all.”
“You’re the worst,” Riley whines. Maya pats her shoulders sympathetically.
“I know, Sunshine. I know.”
//
Riley’s never been one to know how to act around crushes, but her crush on Farkle has rendered her absolutely neurotic. She still talks to him, of course, but she has a harder time starting conversations. What would he even want to talk about? Does he even want to talk with her?
It’s Riley’s favorite pastime, going into the land of overthinking. She excels at it a little too well.
After two weeks of utter turmoil and downright awkward interactions with Farkle, she thinks that maybe she’s just eternally hopeless. Whatever she might feel for Farkle doesn’t matter, because she can’t even figure out how to just be around him. She may as well just quit while she’s ahead and just give up on the hopes of ever being near him again.
Unfortunately, she doesn’t get that option.
Her manager suggests one morning that Farkle help her unload the boxes of wine they just got in, and when Farkle asks if she wants help, she says yes. Normally, she’s used to unloading it all on her own, but the thought of spending quality time with him is just too tempting to pass up and her brain is just dumb dumb dumb.
The restaurant is quiet as they unload each case of wine, save for the never-ending music selection on repeat with eight versions of the same five songs. But it’s nice, sharing a moment with him where they don’t have to talk about anything, just stock wine in the coolers.
Nice, of course, up until their fingers brush up against one another’s, sending electricity coursing straight through Riley’s system. She wonders if he feels it, too, but she doesn’t have to worry any longer when his gaze finally meets hers, the shock apparent on his face. They endure a long moment of silence until Riley can bear it no more, the words falling out of her mouth unbidden.
“Farkle, I really really like you. As in like like you,” Riley blurts.
“Oh thank god,” he breathes before pulling her in for a kiss.
It shouldn’t be great kiss, by all means—they’re both kneeling behind the host stand, the cooler doors open and bottles of wine still waiting to be stocked while a jazzy version of Wonderwall plays in the background. But that doesn’t matter to Riley; she’s with Farkle and they’re kissing and she never wants this moment to end.
It does, though.
“Ahem,” a voice clears their throat, causing Riley and Farkle to split. She has an oh shit moment when she thinks it might be their manager who’s caught them kissing while on the clock, but then it’s even worse when Riley realizes who it is.
“Oh. Hey, Maya,” Farkle greets her sheepishly, earning him a cackle from Maya.
“This is fantastic! I love being right!” she shouts.
Riley buries her head in Farkle’s shoulder in embarrassment, but she smiles secretly—
She loves that Maya was right, too.

cheese fries restaurant
In France, steak frites, which translates "steak and fries" in English, may be a prolific dish throughout the country's brasseries. cheese fries restaurant While the sort of steak and sauce utilized in the preparation has changed over time and between countries, the quintessential French fry is an everlasting factor.
BUT WHY THE POPULARITY
So why are french-fried potatoes so popular? Certainly there are other side dishes that might pair well with a protein. While speculative, it's believed that french-fried potatoes first gained a following in Europe, popularized by dishes including the aforementioned steak frites and moules-frites. Subsequently, french-fried potatoes became fashionable American soldiers stationed overseas during war I. once they returned home, they sought their new favorite snack to no avail. At this point , however, America was witnessing the renaissance of the fashionable nutriment restaurant. Inexpensive to organize and with an already established clientele, White Castle began offering french-fried potatoes with their hamburgers. The rest, as they assert , is history.
The French fry's meteoric rise from a humble fish-substitute to the world's quintessential culinary accompaniment has been an extended time within the making. Thus, we encourage you to celebrate (and, of course, eat) the world's greatest and most venerated entremots .The Quora recipe took 3 days but mostly zero effort. The post was short on details, so I invented them as I went by . the primary thing I noticed was that they discolored while drying within the fridge. After frying, they recolored themselves but appeared to be the smallest amount crispy, and thus , most disappointing of the bunch. As I ate more and more of them however, it ended up that that they had the simplest , most potatoey flavor and satisfying crisp (as against the boom-in-your-face crunch of the opposite two). I felt like I could eat endless amounts of those guys, which made them the winner for meKenji’s fries take 2 days and are specified to be shoestring sized, so I followed his recipe to a tee. His came out more intact than Heston’s but still broken, I’m unsure how he managed to avoid the broken ones on a high heat boil, but i think that’s why his lead photo is merely of 12 intact french-fried potatoes . within the end, the recipe was about twice as involved as Heston’s, with vinegar and agitation needed, but looked and tasted better with more intact fries (marginally more intact).

Thinking that I could optimize on this recipe, i attempted condensing the method into one long day. By 10pm that night, I ended up with soggy fries that couldn’t hold a candle to their 3 day brethren. Something magical seems to happen on the third day.
Was this easier than simply throwing some Ore-Ida or McCains fries within the oven? No, but it had been far, much more satisfying, and I’m guessing either (or both) Steph or i will be able to be improving this recipe as time goes by, until at some point we’ll just effortlessly be ready to throw together a simple batch of french-fried potatoes which will rival the simplest french restaurants, or McDonalds.
Do you guys have an honest french fry recipe? I’m all ears.

hello max!! i know i reblogged your post from earlier, but i had mentioned i would send you some stucky headcanons. again, i’m sending you so much love right now (and always), and i hope that this can cheer you up a lil bit 🥰
ok ok ok let me get into it— i kinda forget what i wrote because i’m so all over the place right now (i should be preparing for a math quiz tomorrow— the content of which i have no clue how to do it— it’s fine)
1) so my first autumn stucky headcanon is that steve and bucky can never get any of the yard work done in autumn (raking the leaves, stringing up the tree lights, etc) because they’re too busy being in love with autumn and each other. even though they love the outcome, and do eventually get it done, they would much rather be snuggling in front of the fire, surrounded by cozy blankets and fuzzy socks, and sipping hot apple cider 😊 the room must be filled with many candles— they are a necessity for them
2) my second headcanon, now that it’s fall, is that steve and bucky are HUGE decorators. especially bucky. i know that it’s a little (a lot) early for halloween, thanksgiving, and christmas, but they go all out. bucky loves his candles and spooky decorations, and steve adores preparing the thanksgiving table with fancy napkins and plate settings. and their christmas tree?? they make it beautiful. they’ve collected an ornament every year, whether that be from a friend or for themselves, each one holds a special memory (i do this in my own family, and i think it’s a cute tradition 🥰). they lost the ones they had from when they were young, but since they came back, they’ve made plenty of new memories.
3) the last one i can think of right now is about the food. steve and bucky both love to pamper each other by making treats and delicious fall meals for each other! they take turns preparing things like homemade pumpkin pie, spiced apple cider, hot cocoa made from scratch, you name it. they like to take turns “helping” each other out, and usually get a bit distracted 😅 usually, though, the food turns out good! ooh, and on big holidays, steve and bucky always insist on taking it on, as well as a few contributions from friends. they love their tradition of making holiday meals together— even in november, they’ve got that christmas music blaring!
i’m so sorry that this is so long!! i came up with some new parts on the spot (and i don’t want to do homework), so it kept on going 😊 i hope these cheer you up a little bit honey!! 😘💗
Oh these are lovely, Helena 🥺
It’s always nice to escape into these fluffy little headcanons and I’m gonna read them again and again today ❤️
I don’t have the mental energy to write much in response, but I love, love, love them. Thanks for taking the time to send them (and please go study so you’re not super stressed later!)
1) awwwww. I imagine whe they do finally hang up lights, there’s lots of time spent playfully wrapping Bucky’s arm up or debating where the best place is until it’s too dark to do anything
2) I want Bucky to discover those jelly window stickies. Also, Bucky and Halloween is something I think about a lot more than is probably healthy and there might be a fic in the making because of it. Or maybe two
He was made into a monster by Hydra—ghost story, a literal boogieman. Just all the feelings and angst-hurt-comfort around that and him re-learning why Halloween is fun because “why would someone want to pretend to be a monster?” But then they get trick-or-treaters and he sees all the little kids dressed up as avengers, as Steve... the joy on their faces... and starts to get it. The next year he dresses up. Something light and happy. Maybe Steve takes him to a masquerade type thing or just a regular party, and Bucky starts to see that wearing a mask, pretending to be someone else, isn’t inherently a bad thing. It can be fun and wonderful and.... yeah. Anyways. I have feelings about it and a very specific costume in mind for one of the years after that’s front and center in the fic I’m maybe writing
And the ornament thing... 🥺!!! I have similar traditions with my mom and now I’m thinking about incorporating them.... ugh I love it.
3) aw I love this one... certain people know I have thought about Steve in a uhh specific apron many times, but all joking aside I love them cooking for each other. Trying new recipes and both deciding that one’s a hard “no” and ordering takeout instead. Attempting to recreate the taste of a stew Steve’s mom used to make, but they can’t quite get it. Absolutely pampering each other with sweet treats and breakfast in bed.
And aww them hosting the rest of their friends... YES. Please. I need it. They don’t have all the big serving bowls and plates with special memories, so they ask everyone for theirs a week beforehand cuz they’re not just gonna use generic ones. Stressing in the kitchen and getting into arguments over stupid, insignificant things like “would you get your ass out of my space??” “Your space???” Or “I need the oven, Steve, we talked about this” until one of them just kicks the other out. Of course the little disagreements usually end in “oh god this is stupid why are we even fighting about this” and kisses and “it’s okay, it doesn’t have to be perfect, y’know?”
In conclusion, you’re amazing, Helena, and I love you and the things you come up with.

〈“Oh, oh, oh, it’s Thanksgiving, we’re gonna have a good time. With the turkey ey! and mashed potatoes ey!. We are gonna have a good time. It’s Thanksgiving~” Nicole Westbrook, “It’s Thanksgiving”〉
⊱ ────── {⋅. 🔥 .⋅} ────── ⊰
Oh look, the Author’s Note is at the top this time. I bet you’re thinking, ‘Well shit, this can’t be good!’ And you’d be right 😂 Okay so, I wanted to write a special for Thanksgiving right and I had these plans to make it this shit fest of just absolute crack and humor right. WELL if you know anything about me you know that I go back to angst by default. Like, you know how when you play online games, sometimes your settings just reset on their own and then you gotta go and turn off the music and turn the subtitles back on and why the fuck is PVP ticked on?? That’s basically me okay. I auto default back to angst unless I changed the settings again lmfao
So, I started this off, full fucking intent on being funny right. Yeah, no. Runaway while you fucking can. It got so fucking heavy in the middle and it’s just… I’m sorry bro. That’s all I can say. It might make you cry? I mean, I’m a sensitive lil bitch and I cried while I wrote it sooo~ But fear not! I gave it a cheerful, happy and somewhat enlightening/inspiring ending?? At least I think so anyway… Also, you don’t have to celebrate Thanksgiving to enjoy this! Oh yeah, and don’t @ me about facts, I literally used Wikipedia because I’m an uncultured fuck that knows nothing about Thanksgiving even though I live in the USA lmao Don’t fucking @ me about the song I chose either 😂 I ain’t adding that shit to the playlist tho.
So yeah! Read this shit, cry into your snuggie or your dog that looks like a mop and then go enjoy some turkey or hug your mum. Don’t forget to reblog this chapter because I’m a hoe for them reblogs ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The door to class 1-A slammed open with so much force, it bounced off the wall and came back, stopped only by a gloved hand. An obnoxiously loud voice filled the room, “Are you ready, kids?!”
“Aye aye, captain!” I jumped up, automatically answering only to curse myself a moment later when he smirked. “Bitch, this ain’t Spongebob!!”
He clicked his tongue and gave me double finger guns. “But you responded!”
I slumped into my seat in frustration.
Present Mic approached the board, picking up a piece of bright orange chalk before writing a word on the board in English: Thanksgiving. He slapped his palm under the word, making several pieces of chalk fall to the floor. “We’re going to be talking about the meaning of Thanksgiving in Western Countries, most notably in the United States!”
“Sir!” Iida’s hand shot into the air.
“Thanks for calling, listener! What is your request?!”
Iida stood tall. “With all due respect, sir, we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Japan, we celebrate National Labor Day.”
“You’re correct… almost! Many people consider National Labor Day to be Japan’s Thanksgiving! Plus, I’m your English teacher, so why not take this time to talk about a wonderful holiday where you get to stuff your face with as much food as you can handle without being looked at like a weirdo?!”
“It doesn’t matter what you do,” I commented blankly. “People will always think you’re a weirdo, cockatiel.”
“Hey, aren’t you American, Winchester?” Kaminari questioned, tilting his head back to look at me.
I shrugged. “My mom was American, but I was born in Japan. I mean, Gramps taught me English and we had a small dinner every Thanksgiving to ‘celebrate my heritage’ or some shit, but I don’t really know the details about the holiday.”
“Which is what I’m here for!” He slapped the board again, giving up a grin. “Now pay close attention, listeners! In America, Thanksgiving occurs on the fourth Thursday of November every year! In Western Countries, this holiday is known to be the moment to thank the Native American people for helping European pilgrims to survive their first winter in the United States! Typically, this is a day when families come together from across the country to be with their loved ones and feast!”
I hummed. “Gramps used to always make me watch these American pageants where grade-schoolers put on plays reenacting the interaction between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. I remember one year, this kid was dressed in a fucking black trash bag stuffed with newspaper.”
“Plays are very popular in schools all across the states!” He nodded his head. “Can anyone tell me what year that Thanksgiving became a federal holiday in the USA?” He cupped his ear, but the only thing he got in response was a cricket that had snuck into the room a week ago to avoid the approaching chill settling over Japan. That fucker is really good at hide-n-seek because we still can’t find him and he’s at the back of the room so it’s like he’s in my fucking ear. “That’s right, the year is 1863! Before that, it was celebrated off and on since 1789 but the third president, Thomas Jefferson, just wasn’t feeling the holiday so he put a stop to it!”
“Seems suspect,” I responded.
“Now, who can tell me about the First Thanksgiving?!”
Chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp.
My eye twitched and I turned in my seat, eyes scanning the back wall. Where the fuck is that goddamn cricket?! I swear to Deadpool I’m gonna roast that bitch when I finally fucking find it.
“Right again, my impressionable listeners! The First Thanksgiving was created by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621! The feast lasted a total of three days and, according to one attendee named Edward Winslow, there were one-hundred-forty-three rockin’ attendees – ninety Native Americans and fifty-three Pilgrims!” He continued to drone on about the history of Thanksgiving in the states, listing off several different dates and names I couldn’t be bothered to remember.
I mean, History is cool, I guess, but when am I ever gonna need to know this stuff to function as a member of today’s society? Especially here in Japan, where American norms aren’t focused on at all? Plus, that fucking cricket is all I can think about!
“By the way, there will be a test on this and if you fail, you get remedial lessons with me, your chart-topping host!!”
Oh, fuck me.

I stepped out into the chilly night, my breath coming in puffs of smoke as I walked. Aizawa didn’t like us to leave the dorms after dark, but there was no specific rule about it as long as we stayed on campus. It was two in the morning, and I had been tossing and turning in my bed since I got there. It hadn’t bothered me at first when Mic brought up Thanksgiving, but now that it was just a couple days away, I’m starting to get restless.
This would be my first Thanksgiving without Gramps…
I fell onto the icy cold stone bench, letting my head fall back to stare up at the navy sky. It looked like ribbons of velvet, bright stars dotting across it like sequins caught under the light. The moon was a perfect crescent.
“Jen?”
I glanced over, seeing Zuku with his arms wrapped tight around his body. Even with the thick sweater he wore, it was obvious he was cold. I patted the bench beside me and he sat down, letting me throw my arms around his body. I focused on my quirk, raising my body temperature to warm him up. “Why are you awake?”
“I got up to use the bathroom and spotted you out the window.” He frowned up at me, his brow furrowed. “You look so… sad. What’s wrong?”
My grip tightened around him and I smiled sadly. “I guess I am a bit sad… This is my first Thanksgiving without Gramps, so… it kinda hurts, you know?”
“Oh, I see… I’m sorry…”
“It’s fine. Just something you gotta deal with, ya know? It’s life, and life is full of unfairness.”
“Will you… tell me about it?” He asked softly, playing with his fingers in his lap. “About what the two of you did each year? If it’s not too painful, I mean…”
“I’d love to,” I ruffled his hair and closed my eyes. “Let’s see – Gramps thought it was important for us to celebrate Thanksgiving because my mother was American. ‘It’s part of who you are, kitten, so we must celebrate!’ is what he’d always tell me. He spent the first five years learning everything he could about the holiday because he wanted it to be authentic and at age five, he started hosting a small feast for the two of us each year.”
“It sounds like he loved you a lot.”
“Yeah… Yeah, he did. We were each other’s world, the only two people we had in life. It was just us against the world!” I chuckled, but it held no humor. “Gramps was a hell of a good chef. He always used to attribute that to the fact that he worked for near six years in a restaurant with his father before the man died and the place had to be sold. Cooking reminded him of a simpler time, so he took pride in everything he cooked. Now that I think about it… that was the first time I met Skye and Heather.”
“Friends of yours?”
“Nah, they made my life hell growing up.” I waved my hand. “I don’t think they remembered this, but I met them once when I was seven. They lived a couple blocks down from us and Gramps had met them on several of his midday walks. Skye was half-Japanese on her mother’s side, while her dad was American and Heather was full American but her family moved to Japan just a year or two previously. Since Gramps wanted to make Thanksgiving as authentic as possible, he went to them for advice. Sky’s father had asked his grandma back home to send a few of her recipes for the holiday and that’s when I met Skye for the first time. He stopped by on his way to work to drop them off and she was with him, but she took one look at me and turned her nose up.”
“You were bullied?” He asked softly, lowering his head. “I never would have thought that.”
“Yeah, but it didn’t start until I was twelve.” I chuckled. “Anyway, we didn’t have much money to work with, but he saved up with every paycheck for months in advance. Just small amounts from each check and then the week before Thanksgiving, he’d take the money he saved and go all out, buying a Turkey, potatoes, pumpkin pie, the works. Some of the shit he couldn’t even get in our town, he had to travel to specialty shops or order the ingredients online from overseas. I kept telling him it was too much work, but he was a stubborn old man.”
Izuku shifted in my arms, his head on my shoulder. “Tell me more about him,” his voice was soft and growing husky as sleep started to claim him.
I hummed softly. “He liked what the day symbolized – families coming together to be thankful for the people in their lives and for the things they were gifted with. To be honest, I often wondered as a child if he regretted raising me, but I knew that was wrong as I got older. It was almost like… raising me gave him a purpose, a reason to face every day with a smile. And I guess in a way… he was the same for me. I remember it so clearly, waking up at one in the morning on Thanksgiving day to sounds in the kitchen. I’d sneak down the hallway, careful of that stupid ass board on the right that always creaked when you stepped on it. And there he was, seeming to radiate warmth and happiness as he bustled around the kitchen getting all the dishes ready for that day.”
I smiled, my hands fisting around his jacket as I took a shaky breath. “He always wore that stupid ass apron I gave him on his birthday in fifth grade. It was this god awful snot yellow color with lime green stripes. If you stared at it too long, you’d go fucking cross-eyed. And it had this… hell, even to this day I don’t know what it was. I think it was a Rhino in a chef’s hat but I guess it coulda been a hippo? Or a fat giraffe with a short neck. He was convinced it was a Thanksgiving Zebra, but I still think he’s nuts. There’s no way that was a damn Zebra, and I would literally list the reasons why it couldn’t be, but he’d just listen intently with a bright smile, nodding his head to show that he was listening. And once I was done ranting, he’d pat my head and simply say, ‘Thanksgiving Zebras are quite special’. I swear he was batty.”
Zuku chuckled. “What makes a Zebra a Thanksgiving Zebra?”
“They have to be fat as fuck apparently. And orange. At least I think it was orange. It coulda just been a really dark yellow. I’m telling you, this apron was all kinds of wrong! I will never understand what I was thinking when I looked at that thing in the store and was like, ‘This is feckin’ awesome, he’s gonna love it!’. But he did love it, wore it every time he cooked, even on the rare occasions we had guests over. He wore it without shame and always with a smile.”
“Because it was from you, so it was special.”
“Hmm, probably, yeah.” I sighed deeply. “Come on, let’s get you to bed, you look like you’re about to pass out.”
“I wanted to hear more stories,” he pouted, but he was clearly having trouble holding his eyes open.
“I promise to tell you some more later, okay?” I stood up, putting my arms under his body and lifting him into my arms. He snuggled closer, mumbling something under his breath before sleep finally claimed him. I held him closer, feeling my eyes sting with tears, but I forced them back. I swore to myself that I wouldn’t cry, not until I’ve earned the right to do so.

“Hey, Jen, wait up!”
I paused in the hallway, glancing over my shoulder. Ryuu was dodging students as he headed toward me, smiling brightly. When he finally reached me, he threw his arms around my neck, pulling me into a hug. I chuckled, hugging him back. “Hello to you, too. What’s up?”
“Are you busy?” He questioned, pulling away.
“Uhh, I got a shit-ton of homework that I probably won’t do and might accidentally burn but that’s about it.” I grinned.
He huffed, putting his hand on his hip. “You better not! You’re not allowed to get kicked from the hero course because you refuse to do your work.”
“Yes, mother.”
He nudged my shoulder but I didn’t miss the way his lips twitched up. “What do you say we hang out at the library for a bit and work on it together?”
I hummed. “Why, if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were trying to lure me away, Hiryuu Rin~”
“As if,” he teased, tugging on my hand. “Come on, let’s get to it!”
“But learning is so boring~”
“You won’t be a hero with that attitude~”
“Last time I checked, pros don’t have to go around dividing letters with numbers to defeat villains,” I grumbled, throwing my head back.
He hummed. “True, but what if you come across a math villain?”
“Punch him in the dick.”
He sweatdropped. “What if he has hostages and he’ll only release them if you solve his math problems?”
I looked at him blankly. “What are the actual chances of that fucking happening, Ryuu?”
He huffed, puffing out his cheeks. “It could happen!”
I poked his inflated cheek with a chuckle. “Anything is possible, I guess.”
Ryuu led me to the back of the library, settling down in the corner. The next few hours were spent taking turns on our homework assignments. I was able to help him with a couple subjects, while he had my back for some of the harder ones, like math. And then there was physics, which left us both fucking stumped.

The librarian peeked her head around a large bookshelf, her tired, dull eyes landing on us. “Library’s about to close. Time to leave.”
I glanced out the window and clicked my tongue. “Damn, we were here for a while. It’s dark out.”
He nodded, stuffing his books into his bag. “They say time flies when you’re having fun, but…”
“We weren’t having fun at all,” I pointed out and he shrugged, stifling a yawn.
“Can I come back to your dorm?”
“Ho~? I didn’t know you were so forward, Ryuu.” I wiggled my eyebrows at him and he rolled his eyes, rubbing his arms as we stepped out into the cold.
“I was thinking more along the lines of hot chocolate and a movie.”
“Well, that’s no fun.”
“Just what were you thinking…” he muttered under his breath before shaking his head at my grin. “Nevermind, I don’t want to know!”
The walk to 1-A’s dorm passed in comfortable silence, Ryuu practically glued to my side as he soaked up the warmth from my body. I wonder if his body reacts negatively to the cold because of his reptile-like quirk. I should ask him about that later.
We stepped inside and I immediately froze in the doorway, my eyes wide.
Ryuu took his shoes off, looking back at me curiously. “Jen? What’s wrong?”
“I, uh…” I swallowed hard, covering my mouth and closing my eyes. As soon as I stepped into the building, the smell of food had wafted to my nose, almost as if it were waiting at the door to tease me. It smells just like… like the house did every Thanksgiving morning. It’s the exact same smell.
A hand rested on my shoulder, Ryuu looking at me with worry. “Do you feel sick?”
“No, I just…” I took a breath, forcing a smile as I tried to ignore the smell. “Sorry, just remembered something.”
“Are you sure? You look pale…”
I chuckled, pushing past him. “I was born pale. You up for grabbing the hot chocolate and heading to my room for the movie? Not really in the mood for socializing.” I stepped into the kitchen and froze for the second time. What the fuck?
“If you’re not in the mood for socializing, that might be a problem, Winchester.” Kirishima grinned.
“You better fucking get in the mood, bitch!” Katsuki scowled, his face twisted up.
“Welcome home, Jen.” Izuku greeted, brightly.
“Huh, class A certainly loves going over the top for everything, don’t they?!” Monoma laughed, but it didn’t have its usual mocking undertone to it.
“I hope you don’t mind us joining you guys,” Kendo smiled, tilting her head.
My eyes scanned the faces of classes A and B, all stuffed into the kitchen around the table that had been covered in various dishes of food – turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole… Am I dreaming? I don’t… I can’t…
Ryuu embraced me, his hand finding my cheek. “You’re crying…”
“What? No, I -” I lifted my hand, wiping at my eyes. I am crying. I’m crying in front of both classes. They’re supposed to look at me and be reassured and feel safe, how can they do that if I’m crying my eyes out? Why am I even crying?
Momo and Ashido rushed over to me, pushing Ryuu away as they fussed over me, squishing me between them. “We’re sorry, we should have asked first!”
“Yeah, don’t cry, Jen!” Ashido squeezed me tighter.
“I don’t… know why I’m crying…” I sobbed, rubbing at my eyes furiously but the tears wouldn’t stop coming.
Izuku smiled sadly as he approached, pulling my hands away from my face. “All Might thinks you haven’t properly grieved for Gramps. That’s why I thought it would be a good idea to do this, to give you a chance to… to… properly grieve and to realize… to realize that you’re not alone!” His shoulders shook as his eyes filled with tears.
“Damn it, Deku! You’re supposed to make her feel better not start crying with her!!” Katsuki slammed his hand on the table, the silverware rattling.
“Can I… have a minute, please?” I asked softly.
The two girls exchanged a look before hesitantly pulling away. I bowed my head and stepped out of the kitchen, heading back out through the doorway. As soon as it clicked, I leaned back and slid down, my body shaking from the effort it took to hold back the rest of my tears.
‘Remember, kitten, life isn’t always easy. More often than not, you will face hardships and pain that will be so bad, you will begin to question why it has to be that way. However, just as happiness is often fleeting, so, too, is sadness. You may think that crying makes you a weak person, but I assure you it does not. Crying is a sign that you’ve been strong for too long, and there is no shame in it. Don’t be afraid to show your emotions, kitten. They are not your weakness, they are your strength.’
“Young Jen?”
“Toshi…” I sobbed, tears flowing down my cheeks as my body shook.
Warmth flooded me as I was brought into a strong chest, arms wrapped tight around me. A tired voice sighed from somewhere behind him, “I told you this was a bad idea.”
“Shouta…”
He kneeled beside us, his hand gently rubbing the top of my head. “Sorry, I should’ve stopped them.”
I shook my head. “No, I… I just…”
Toshi rubbed my back comfortingly. “When young Midoriya came to me and told me about his conversation with you the other night, I saw this as a teaching moment. He wanted to get together with the rest of your class, as well as class B, to have a Thanksgiving dinner in honor of your Gramps. I knew this would be hard for you, but I was sure that it was the right thing to do. You accepted the fact that he was gone, but you never grieved for him, did you?”
I shook my head, clutching his sweater between my fingers.
“When we lose someone we love, closure is important for us to heal and move forward. And… I worry that you might feel alone in this new world, but you have impacted those around you, even those from class B. They were more than happy to help out when young Midoriya explained things to them.” Toshi pushed me backward, grasping me by the shoulders and giving me his signature smile. “You are surrounded by people who love you, my dear Jen. Never forget that.”
And I smiled back, even with the tears still falling from my eyes.
⊱ ────── {⋅. 🔥 .⋅} ────── ⊰
When I returned to the kitchen twenty minutes later, several worried eyes snapped to me, no doubt noticing my red and swollen eyes, but I smiled brightly at them to ease their worries, stepping aside to let the two teachers inside.
“Hey, All Might made it!” Kaminari cheered.
“And Aizawa-sensei, too!” Kishima grinned.
“Does that mean we can eat now? I’m fucking starving,” Katsuki complained, his arm thrown over the back of the chair as he glared at the ceiling.
“Yes, let’s dig in!” Momo clapped her hands excitedly and the room sprung to life, everyone squeezing into the chairs around the table. Not everyone could fit, of course, and they ended up sitting off to the side or on the counters. All Might himself took up two and a half seats as he sat at the head of the table, laughing and chatting with the students as he told them stories from his youth.
I sat at the opposite end, between Shouta and Izuku, both of whom kept glancing at me with worry, though the greenette wasn’t trying to hide it like our teacher was. I chuckled, taking each of their hands with my own. “Thank you for this. It really means a lot to me.”
“Of course!” Izuku squeezed my hand, giving me a bright smile. Aizawa didn’t say anything, but he squeezed my other hand.
“You Sparky fuck, that turkey leg was mine!!”
“Huh? I don’t see your name on it, Bakugo.”
“Do you wanna die?!”
“Ahahaha! What deplorable manners class A has! Pathetic!”
“Be quiet, Monoma!”
“So many beautiful girls packed into one room, I just wanna touch them…”
“You’re disgusting!”
“Can you pass the cranberry sauce? Ribbit.”
“Here you go, frog girl!!”
“You’re too loud, Tetsu!”
“Hey, All Might, what was your favorite thing about America when you lived there?”
“That’s easy, young Kaibara! I loved seeing the -”
“Hey, you guys started without us!!” The room turned their attention to the doorway where Midnight, Gran and Present Mic stood. Midnight, who had spoken, huffed in annoyance. “There better be a turkey leg left!”
“Itps mjinre!” Katsuki mumbled around the turkey leg that he had stolen from Kaminari.
“You little brat, give it here!” She demanded, nearly jumping across the table to tackle him. His eyes grew wide and he took off, yelling obscenities at her as she chased him around the kitchen.
Gran approached me, putting her hand on my shoulder and smiling kindly. “Happy Thanksgiving, deary.”
I looked around the room, watching the chaos that was ensuing around me. And I smiled, my heart full of happiness and warmth. Things haven’t been easy, and I’m sure the road ahead of me is far from clear, but I’m surrounded by people that care about me, that I care about. Gramps… wherever you are right now, I want you to know that I’m okay. You don’t have to worry about me. These idiots may not be entirely sane and they may drive me up a wall sometimes but… they are home. My home.
“Hey, hey!” Mic raised his voice, making the glasses rattle. “Let’s go around and say what we’re thankful for! Start us off, Uraraka!”
She pulled a surprised face at suddenly being called before tilting her head and smiling. “I’m thankful that we can all be here together!”
“Excellent! Iida, you next!”
“I’m thankful to be with friends during this time of giving thanks!”
“That’s the same as what Uraraka just said but good job! Let’s keep this train a-rollin’, folks!”
“I’m thankful for music.”
“Boobs. Definitely boobs.”
“I’m thankful Bakugo didn’t kill me for that turkey leg…”
“I’m thankful that everyone here is so manly!”
“I’m thankful I’m not sitting next to Mineta…”
“Anime and manga, definitely.”
“I’d be thankful if this bitch would stop chasing me!!”
“And I’d be thankful if you’d give me that turkey leg you brat!”
“I’m thankful that all of you dears are healthy~”
“Hah, I’ll be thankful when class A finally goes down!”
“I’ll be thankful when I don’t have to babysit Monoma anymore…”
“I’m thankful I got to meet Kirishima!!”
“I’m thankful that I sparkle so beautifully. I am magnifi -”
“I’m thankful for this awesome food!”
“What about you, Jen?” Izuku asked, curiously.
“Me?” I hummed as several people looked at me expectantly. I grinned brightly. “Ain’t it obvious? I’m thankful for tacos!”
Zuku sweatdropped. “I shoulda guessed…”
“Well, you stick to your guns, at least, young Jen!”
“Speaking of,” I looked Zuku dead in the eye, my expression deadly serious. “Where the fuck are my tacos, bro?”
His body tensed and he swallowed hard. “Um, I… I didn’t see any mention of tacos when I was researching Thanksgiving…”
I clicked my tongue. “That’s fucking shameful, Zuku. No holiday is complete without tacos.”
“I-I’m sorry!”
I grinned, ruffling his messy hair. “Make sure you don’t forget next year, ‘kay?”
His face lit up and he nodded. “Of course!”

Handle with Care
Summary: While cooking Dean a special Thanksgiving pie, you have a little “accident” in the kitchen, leading to some fun with a fire extinguisher.
Pairing: Dean x Reader
Square filled: Pie for @spndeanbingo and Free Space for @spngenrebingo
Word Count: 1421
Warnings: A tiny bit of language, mostly fluff
A/N: This was written for @stunudo for my Fall “drabbles”, a term I use loosely because none of them have actually been drabbles. Her request was “Reader tries to bake Dean a pie he's never had before? (I suck at fluff, idk but I wanted to send something fun in.) xoxo.” You do not suck at fluff, Stu, I loved this request!
It was no secret that there were very few things in this world that Dean Winchester loved more than pie.
Well, of course, Sam and Baby were definitely up there for sure, but pie was, without a doubt, in the top 5 of Dean’s favorite things.
So, when Thanksgiving rolled around, you’d been excited to volunteer for dessert duty. You’d thought that if you could make Dean the best pumpkin pie he’d ever had, you’d be able to show him how much he meant to you, something you could never get up the nerve to tell him yourself. But, when you’d overheard Dean talking to Sam about not having much to be thankful for this year, you became even more determined to make this a Thanksgiving he’d never forget.
You quickly decided that the traditional pumpkin pie wouldn’t be special enough for Dean this year. If you really wanted him to have something special, you’d need to get a little more creative to knock it out of the park. So, you decided to look up recipes for pies that Dean had never had before, something he would really love. After a lot (and lot) of research, you finally settled on a pie that combined all of Dean’s favorite things: Whiskey Bacon Irish Apple.
You wanted it to be perfect, so you decided to do a test run before Thanksgiving, gathering all of the ingredients and locking yourself away in the kitchen. You had just started cutting the apples when the door cracked open, and Dean popped his head in. “Hey…” he started hopefully.
“Nuh uh,” you interrupted, holding your hand up to stop him. “I told you, Dean, no sneak peeks.”
“Oh, come on,” he begged, pushing the door open fully and shuffling in, his hands folded in a silent plea. His eyes were as big as a puppy’s, and you bit your lip to keep from laughing, turning away from him so he wouldn’t see.
“No, Dean. It’s supposed to be a surprise. No. Sneak. Peeks.”
He raised his hand, pushing his index finger and thumb together until they were just a few centimeters apart. “Just a little one? Please….”
You rolled your eyes, chuckling softly to yourself. Damn, he was hard to resist. “Fine, you can stay, but only while I mix the filling. After that, you’re out, got it?”
“Got it,” Dean promised solemnly, plopping down on one of the island stools with a grin. “Scout’s honor.”
“Ha!” you laughed. “Like you were ever a boy scout.”
Dean chuckled deeply as you turned back to your apples, making the last few cuts. When you were finished, you threw them into a pan, turning the flame on low. “Alright,” you whispered. “Time for the magic touch.”
You pulled a few pieces of bacon from the package on the table and added them to a second, already hot pan. As they began to crackle and sizzle, you heard Dean moan behind you. “Ohhh…”
“Like what you see?” you laughed. Pausing, you picked up the whiskey bottle sitting on the counter next to you, smiling knowingly. “Just wait ‘til you see what’s next.”
Dean stared at you in anticipation, and you couldn’t help but show off, moving a little slower as you spun back to your pans. The bacon was still sizzling in the hottest one, so you turned towards the low-heat pan with the apples, preparing to add the whiskey. But, before you could, you looked over your shoulder, making the mistake of establishing eye contact with Dean’s intensely eager gaze. You smiled back at him and tipped the bottle to pour it, but your divided attention led you to accidentally push your hand a little too far to the left, right towards the bacon.
It felt like it all happened in slow motion, tipping the bottle, looking back to see it hit the scalding, bacon-coated plan, the cloud of burning hot steam flying back at you. Before you knew it, the flames were rising up, the alcohol feeding them up and into the air.
“Oh my God!” you screamed, raising your hand to shield your face. Within seconds, Dean was there, having catapulted over the island to stand in front of you. He grabbed a towel and began beating back the flame, trying to reach the burners.
“Y/N, quick, get back!”
You stepped back, watching as Dean continued to use the towel as half-weapon, half-shield against the high flames. Looking around, you struggled to find a way to help him, your eyes eventually landing on the fire extinguisher Sam had insisted on mounting in the corner. You ran over and grabbed it before sprinting back to Dean.
“Okay, okay, okay,” you yelled, adjusting the extinguisher in your hand, pointing the hose at Dean and feeling for the lever. “Hold on, Dean, I got it!”
“Y/N, wait!” Dean warned, his hand already on the burner, but it was too late. You pulled the lever, spraying thick, white foam all over the stove, and all over Dean.
When you looked up, you gasped, one hand flying to your mouth to cover the laugh that you couldn’t stop from escaping. In front of you, the fire was out, but Dean was covered head to toe in the white, soapy fire-killing foam.
He looked like a giant, grumpy marshmallow.
You giggled and placed the fire extinguisher on the ground. “Dean, I am so, so sorry…” you started, but your continued laughter took some of the sincerity from your words.
“You know…” Dean grumbled, wiping the foam away from his face with the back of his hand. “I think I could’ve handled that one without your ‘help’.”
“Sorry?” you repeated, but the smile on your face told a different story, and Dean noticed.
“Oh, you think this is funny, huh?” Dean sassed, crossing his arms over his chest, the movement making them slip and slide.
“A little,” you laughed, nodding vigorously.
Dean grinned, his eyes twinkling. “Well, then, maybe I should give some to you.” He opened his arms wide, moving to hug you, but you shook your head, stepping back.
“Oh, no, Dean, don’t you dare!” You held up your finger in warning, but he ignored it, his grin widening.
“Oh, I dare,” Dean growled, moving at lightning speed towards you. You shrieked and rushed away, running around the kitchen, but he quickly caught you, wrapping his arms around your waist and lifting you high up off the floor. You squealed and struggled a little, but he had you, pulling you down until you were both lying on the floor, covered in foam, with Dean hovering over you, his weight propped up on one forearm while his other arm stayed firmly wrapped around your waist.
He gently lifted one hand and brushed the hair out of your face, leaving a streak of foam behind. “There that’s better.”
You grinned, letting out a sigh. “I guess that recipe was a fail, huh?”
He cracked a smile, shaking his head. “Nah, definitely not a fail. You kidding me? Bacon and whiskey? Home run. Maybe next time, I’ll actually get to try it before you set the place on fire.”
You laughed before stilling in his arms, your breath catching as you stared into his eyes. “I just wanted to make you happy, give you something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I heard you talking to Sam…”
His eyes widened, understanding dawning on him. “Is that what this is about? Y/N…” He smiled softly, resting a hand on your cheek. “Darlin’, you give me something to be thankful for every single day. Don’t you know how important you are to me, how happy you make me, how much I lov…”
He paused, his voice trailing off, but you could see the emotions written all over his face and you beamed. “Dean, I love you, too.”
His grin widened, happiness radiating out of it. “You do? Cause, I mean, you don’t have to say it just ‘cause you thought I was gonna say it. If you don’t really…”
“Shut up,” you laughed, leaning up to kiss him, your hands tangling with the foam blended in his hair as his arm tightened around your waist.
When you pulled back, both of your lips were covered in foam, but you didn’t care. “I think I should make pies more often,” you laughed.
“Mmm, hell yeah, you should,” he concurred, grinning as he leaned back in. “Although, maybe a little less fire extinguisher next time, huh?”

Genshin Impact || A Week of Giving
Basically the Teyvat equivalent of Christmas! (And thanksgiving I guess) First time writing a fantasy holiday, thought I’d give it a go. Also I’m not that read up on that much lore I don’t have the brain energy to read?? So if you find anything contradicts canon somehow... idk
Btw there’s not much headcanons for Liyue as I haven’t actually... Finished Liyue’s story yet... One more level tho..
Every year, there's a week long festival to celebrate the snow that falls apon every region. Even in the most extreme weather it still falls, coating every inch of land it can. It's know as a time of generosity and peace since the snow drives away all monsters from the cities, a gift from the sky. People create homemade trinkets and treats to gift to their fellow man. Restaurants and taverns close so they can bring their businesses outside to the centre of town, creating an intricate feast for all. Entertainers of all walks of life come to showcase their talents, and after their shows they sit and talk with the other performers, sharing stories of their travels and their love of the craft. Travelers recount their heroic, and not so heroic, feats. Outsiders are welcomed in regardless of background and party with new friends.
Mondstadt's festival is notorious for being wild, not a surprise, who can resist Diluc's wine? Of course Diona hates the whole event but she still serves her famous mixed drinks.
The Knights of Favonius let loose and enjoy themselves, even letting Klee out of solitary confinement on the agreement she gets patted down before leaves HQ.
This year, the young traveller became the main story teller of the adventure's tales event, painting pictures of the worlds they've travelled to with just their words. Venti got up half way through and walked towards the stage, with the traveller not stopping, too emerged in the memories of their missing twin. He began to play a tune on his harp, complimenting the stories perfectly. Once the story ended, no one could applaud, they were all in too much shock. "D-did they hate it?" Traveller muttered as they sat down. "Certainly not! You could be a bard, y'know?"
Every year Albedo sketches a picture of the feast and gifts it to the town on the last day. The Jean hang it on the upper floors with a silver plate marking the year. Razor gets invited in, usually by Bennett or Amber. While he only stays for a few hours, he takes a table's worth of food to his wolf family since boars tend to hide during this week.
Diluc tends to avoid the feast, preferring to over look everyone, until Kaeya drags him to the table, offering him a drink. Diluc takes it and they toast. While there's certainly still a distance between the two, they try and bare it. Fischl has mentioned that this holiday is akin to an ancient celebration in her home world but refuses to say more than "an immortal man comes and gifts blessings in a time of unrelenting winds".
Mona enjoys this time more than the average person due to the free food and people come to see
Barbara puts on a very flashy and energetic concert so people use up their energy before the drinking gets that bad.
Jean gives a speech at the start and end of the festival but other than that, she can take a break from her duties, and if she tries to leave she's dragged back by either Kaeya or Lisa.
The itinerary for this year is (Events in written order but we are unable to confirm how long each event will last):
Day 1: The beginning, Jean's blessing, Idol Barbra's heart and snow melting hymns
Day 2: Adventurer's Tales, Winter Gilding Fest
Day 3: The first day of gifts, The hour of thanks, Archery contest, A small play (that has yet to be chosen)
Day 4: General Talent Show (anyone can enter, and there's no preregistration), Eating contest, Venti's Ballads
Day 5: Art and Craft for the children, , Helen's songs from the heavens, Drinking contest
Day 6: Free constellation readings by the Marvellous Miss Mona, Snow ball fight (PLEASE be sober this time, we don’t want any accidents this year!!!)
Day 7: Collect leftovers and prep, walk down to Wangshu inn and meet with the people of Liyue, The second day of gifts, The collaboration concert, Final feast, The story’s of other worlds, The dance until frost melts into the earth, Jean’s
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The people of Liyue commonly grow a large, magnificent bonzi tree and have the feast surround it. They decorate it with gems that glow in the lights of the lanterns and candles. Of course Xiangling adores this time, it allows her to test her newest recipes and taste other's cooking for inspiration. Her food also warms the mouths and stomachs so it’s perfect to combat the harsh cold.
The itinerary for this year is (Events in written order but we are unable to confirm how long each event will last):
Day 1: The beginning, Ninggaung’s wisdom,
Day 2: Adventurer's Tales,
Day 3: The first day of gifts, The hour of thanks
Day 4: General Talent Show (anyone can enter, and there's no preregistration), Eating contest, Xinyan heats up the arena!!!
Day 5: Art and Craft for the children, Story teller’s show
Day 6: A day of rest for the journey, feel free to do whatever you please
Day 7: Collect leftovers and prepare, walk down to Wangshu inn and meet with the people of Mondstadt, The second day of gifts, The collaboration concert, Final feast, The story’s of other worlds, The dance that brings back our golden landscape
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may have noticed that the people of Mondstadt and Liyue meet on the last day. Barbatos and Rex Lapis were known to meet a few times through the years. Apparently gifting each other small things, like tea leaves and bouquets of flowers. While it’s only a rumour it became accepted as truth, and who knows, maybe it is?
It's a well deserved break from the madness of unpredictable life.
#i wrote this in a day shhhhhhhh#Genshin#genshin impact#genshin headcanons#i guess???#just an idea i had that i dont have the time nor energy to draw#so yeah i guess we're branching out to writing too

Fall
Sebastian Stan x Reader
A bunch of fluff that will hopefully make you smile.
Warning: Seb is so good???????????????????
A/N: Just like my last one, this both felt super long and super rushed at the same time???? IDEK anymore, man. I hope you enjoy.
If you have any writing tips (like not writing all of your fan fictions at 1 in the morning), I’m open to any and all of them!!!
People love Fall for many reasons. The pretty leaves changing colors, the weather getting cooler letting everyone get ready for hot chocolate and cuddling, Thanksgiving, even the leaves when they fall and get to the satisfying crunchy state. However, that was also the worst part of fall, the leaves falling. I always spent over an hour raking up the leaves that fell from my huge maple tree in my huge yard and the two other trees in my yard, it was so much work, every single year.
And that’s exactly where I am right now, raking up the leaves for my parents because they’re both old and always working. My mom recently got kidney stones take out, so it’s understandable that she wouldn’t want to be dealing with these. My dad was always busy working in his store that he owned with a partner and my brother. Why my parents couldn’t ask one of the other boys to do it, I’m not sure, but whatever.
I’m raking up the leaves, with my rake, like every normal person does, when I hear a loud whirring noise. Like someone running a motor, and the sound of leaves rustling after it.
Okay, so someone is cleaning off their sidewalk with a leaf blower, fantastic. I’m glad people care about others walking on the sidewalk.
I turn to glance at the good samaritan and am shocked at what I see. Not only is that man absolutely stunning in his leather jacket, short brown hair that looks way too soft to be real falling in his eyes, his perfect muscular build that is oh so tasty, but he’s not using the leaf blower to clean the sidewalk. Oh no, he’s using it in his freaking yard?! Who on earth does that? That is not morally okay. I take back everything I said about his stunning body.
Okay, fine, it’s not the worst idea. In fact it’s kind of genius, sort of. But you’d think with a body like his, he’d be fine doing a little work, and I definitely would not mind him doing it. But it’s also kind of dumb. First of all, you can’t really aim with a leaf blower, it’s just air, so it goes everywhere, often times making an even bigger mess than you started with. And it doesn’t make satisfying piles that everyone loves to jump in even when it’s not the leaf pile they made in their own yard and it makes a huge mess for the owner of whoever’s house it is has to clean up and it’s so rude and frustrating and freaking trespassing and GET OUT OF MY YARD, YOU CHILDREN.
Anywayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
I continue to stare at him doing that for a few more minutes, torn between swooning and going over to chop off his head (and maybe keeping it in the freezer with some sunglasses, kinda like Medusa, ya know? Because I’m sure his gaze is just so darn captivating I would freeze up the moment he looks at me, wink wink) when he glances up at me. He turns off his darn leaf blower and sends me a shining smile while walking over to my parents’ yard. And let me say this right now, he gets more and more attractive the closer he gets, HOT DANG.
“Hi neighbor. Couldn’t help but notice you checking my girl out. She’s pretty, right?” Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my gosh his voice is breathtaking. But who is he talking about? Is this his way of telling me to stop looking at him because he’s off the market without actually having a female around??????
“She? What are you talking about?”
He smiles even wider, as if excited to show me this girl. He lift his leaf blower, using his head to gesture at it a little. “Her name is Ethel. She works real hard and well. Had her for about 5 years now.” First off, that’s a gross name (A/N, I am so sorry if your name is Ethel, I asked my friend for a name and he came up with that and the reader had to think it was gross, love you!), and second, what?
“You... You named your leaf blower?”
“Of course, who doesn’t?”
“Any person with any sort of common sense????”
“I don’t see a problem with it. People name their cars. Anyway, my name is Sebastian Stan.” At least his name isn’t terrible. I kinda like it, actually.
“Huh, well good for you. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some work to do.” I gesture to the yard and my rake before I begin again, the sound of the leaves getting crushed and moved loud and hopefully ending the conversation.
“Wait, what’s your name?” And he didn’t leave.
“Doesn’t matter, you won’t be seeing me again anytime soon. I don’t live here, and I only come when my parents ask me to.” And that’s when it starts to rain. “Freaking hormonal weather...” I curse the rain because it means I can’t finish my work today.
“Shoot, I should get home, get Ethel in a warm dry place, she gets a little finicky when she’s wet.” He smiles again before walking away.
I sigh and sit on my parents’ porch. I took a cab here, neither of my parents are home so the door’s locked, I don’t have a key, and I can’t call a cab because of course my phone decided to die a little after I started raking. So I just sit there, watching the rain pour down on the pile of leaves I had managed to make.
A few minutes of sitting there by myself and Sebastian comes jogging into my yard with an umbrella. “Locked out?” he asks, as if it’s not obvious.
I roll my eyes and respond, “No, I just love sitting in the freezing cold rain without a jacket watching my hard work get ruined.”
He chuckles a little before walking up to me, offering his hand. “Come to my place. It’s warm and unlocked right now. I also make a mean cup of hot chocolate.”
“Tempting, but how do I know you’re not just luring me into your house so you can murder me?” I glance at his hand. It looks rough and calloused. Probably from lifting weights. Those metal bars aren’t exactly easy on the skin.
“Come on, would I do that? With a face like this?” His smile is literally blinding me.
“Yes.”
He sighs, his smile falling a little, making me sad. “Come on, at least if I’m a murderer you’ll die comfortably and not out in this ice cold rain.”
I nod a little. “I guess you’re right.” I reach up and take his hand, his smile back to its original brightness as he pulls me up.
“So, do I get to know your name yet?” He wraps his incredibly warm arm over my shoulder so I fit under the umbrella with him.
“Not until I’m certain you won’t kill me.” He laughs again and squeezes my shoulders gently in amusement as he leads us back to his house. My hand flies to his chest in that action and I can feel his well defined pectorals, taunting me because I can’t see them.
“I guess I’ll just have to come up with a name on my own. How about... Jessica?”
“Oh gosh, can we end this nonsense right now? I don’t want you calling me any actual names.”
“But you look like a Jessica to me.” I shoot him a glare right as he looks at me. “Fine fine, how about Princess?”
“You’re killing me, Sebastian.”
“I think it fits you.” He squeezes me again as we get to his door.
“And how do you figure that?” He pulls his arms from around me, causing me o shiver from the cold reaching where I was used to his warmth.
“So far you have been nothing but a royal pain.” He opens the door before closing his umbrella and shaking the water.
“Wow, thank you so much. That means a lot to me.” Sebastian looks back at me and we both just stand there, looking at each other, his face no longer having his beautiful smile. Instead, he looks thoughtful and serious.
“That’s exactly why I said it. I couldn’t possibly risk upsetting the princess.” He continues with a straight face for just a few more moments before bursting out laughing and telling me to go inside with his arm. “Please, come inside. Ladies first.”
I scoff, just thinking ‘That’s what she said’ as I walk in. When I first walk in I see the living room. A love seat against one wall across the TV on top of a little dresser thing, most likely full of movies, consoles, games, all the works a stereotypical man would have. Between the TV and couch is a coffee table, a vase of yellow roses in the middle of it. In the corners of the room are lamps and other plants.
“Please, have a seat. I’ll bring you something to drink.” He shuts the door and heads into what I can only assume is the kitchen. I take a seat on the couch, enjoying the softness on my bum.
Sebastian comes back around 5-10 minutes later with 2 cups of a steamy beverage. He takes a seat next to me and hands me one. Hot chocolate, I soon realize. “Thank you, Sebastian.” He nods silently, watching my reaction as I blow on it before taking a small sip. At first, all I can feel is it burning across my tongue and down my throat, but the after taste is magical. It straight up tastes like caramel Lindor chocolate truffles. “Holy heck, that is amazing!”
He sets his own cup down with a smile. “I’m glad you like it. My mom taught me the recipe. She is a magical woman. She would have liked you.”
“Oh? How come she isn’t around to like me?”
“She lives in Romania.”
“Romania? Is that where you’re from?” He nods, his hair that had been tucked away falling back into his face. My hand shoots up to tuck it away so I can see his beautiful eyes better. “Do you miss being there?”
“Of course. My family is there, and many of my old friends.”
“How come you moved here, if you liked it so much?”
“I don’t know, I guess I just felt a pull to move across the globe. Maybe it was your soul telling mine it missed me.” He smiles sheepishly and looks down.
“Do you really believe that stuff?” He nods again. “That is so disgustingly cute.” I smile when he looks up again.
“You have a beautiful smile, you know that?”
‘No, not many people tell me that. I guess I don’t do it that often.” I lean my head against the back of his couch. “Not many people try so hard to get me to smile.”
“Well then it is their loss. Your smile is breathtaking. Thank you for blessing me with your smile, Princess.”
“Y/N.”
“What?”
“Y/N, that’s my name.” He hums softly.
“I think Princess fits you better.”

Black and Blue - One
Pairing: Detective Loki x Reader
Summary: She saw the world in black and blue
Requested: Nope
Chapter Warnings: Some swearing I think??, panic attack
A/N: so guys... there’s been a lot leading up to this yaknow - the first part of my Detective Loki series!! I’m so excited to share this with all of you at last, I’m really looking forward to this series (I say series but I mean miniseries there’s not gonna be that many parts) but please remember to let me know what you think of it!!! Like, reblog, comment, send asks because they really inspire me to write more and I love talking to you guys :)
Two // Three // Four // Five
Y/N Y/L/N saw the world in black and blue.
Purple and yellow.
Bruised and unbruised.
Moving to Conyers had been simultaneously the scariest thing she had ever done and the best thing.
Every step she took in Conyers felt like a triumph. Every time she would turn the key to her apartment it felt like she had accomplished something great.
And yet so much of her believed it was too good to be true.
The bakery was her haven. The bread her safe place, the brownie’s her comfort, the pastries her joy.
She made friends. Regular customers would come in and ask her how she was doing, but not in the way that she was accustomed to. No sympathetic head tilt, no unsure smiles, no tiptoeing around the truth.
Y/N liked that. The unknowing. The blank space she could fill now with baked goods.
The kids loved her. And the teenagers. Mainly because she gave them free food when they came in looking too stressed or too sad - she remembered that that was like.
And that was how she met the Dovers.
///
“Good morning Y/N!” Grace chirped as she ushered her family into the bakery. Y/N turned away from the oven, hot tray still in hand.
“Morning!” She beamed.
“That smells good,” Grace told her as Y/N placed the tray down.
“It’s a new recipe I’m trying out - well, not really a new one, my grandma usd to make it for me but always refused to give me the recipe,” she laughed. Anna’s nose was pressed up against the glass, her eyes searching the Aladdin’s cave o sweet delights.
“It looks good,” Keller confirmed, his hands coming to rest almost protectively on Anna’s shoulders.
“What are they?” Ralph asked curiously.
“Cardamon cookies,” Y/N told him, filling up a box with the Dovers’ usual order.
“So, Thanksgiving tomorrow, any place?” Grace asked, looking through her wallet distractedly. Y/N winked at Anna and Ralph as she snuck four of the still-hot cardamon cookies into the the box, knowing that Grace and Keller would protest and insist upon paying.
“I don’t celebrate it,” Y/N admitted with a laugh.
“Why?” Anna asked, staring at the box in Y/N’s hand.
“It’s not really a thing back home,” Y/N shrugged, her mind wandering back to snapshots of the childhood she had left behind in the wide, green expanse of the English countryside.
She missed home more than she would never allow herself to admit.
“You should spend it with us!” Grace said with a warm smile. Y/N looked up in surprise to see Keller nodding along in agreement.
“We always go to the Birches and spend it there but they wouldn’t mind you joining us,” Keller added.
“That’s a lovely offer but I don’t want to intrude,” Y/N argued, walking over to the coffee machine.
“You wouldn’t be! Nancy always makes too much food anyway,” Grace promised her.
“Please come, Miss Y/N,” Anna added with wide-eyed innocence.
Y/N hesitated, looking around at the Dovers who were watching her expectantly. She let out a long sigh before conceding with a nod of her head.
“Okay.”
Perhaps it was time for her to allow herself to leave her haven for a little while.
///
Nothing in the world could have ever prepared her for this.
The rest of the evening had been bordering on perfect. The Birches had welcomed her with open arms, their enthusiasm only increasing when they realised she had come laden with three pumpkin pies and cream.
She had done her usual trick of skirting around Keller and Franklin as best she could by offering Nancy help in the kitchen, which had been accepted with great appreciation.
When dinnertime conversation had, somewhat inevitably, turned to her she spoke of her plans for turning her little bakery into more of a cafe with tables and chairs and an array of drinks rather than just coffee. She caught herself before it was too late, though, heat crawling up her cheeks as she turned the conversation back around to the subject of the Birches’ home, something which she knew to be safe territory.
Then, instead of heading home as so much of her was screaming to do, she squashed her nerves down into a tiny box, deciding to them them there for the evening and not let them dictate her life for the first time in a while.
Not let him dictate her life.
Instead, she had joined the group of parents in the living room, talking and laughing over subjects not quite appropriate for conversations with kids present.
And then, so quickly, everything had gone wrong.
She went with Grace back to her home to look for Anna and Joy. She caught her when Grace almost fell on her weak, Bambi-like legs upon not finding the two young girls and allowed the older woman to cry her worry into her for a moment.
Y/N had been the one to call the police.
The families were too distraught, their words too shaky, their voices too close to tears for them to explain the situation to the operator.
When Ralph had begged her to stay she knew there was no way that she could deny him that. Not when his parents were in the state that they were.
Y/N made buckets of tea.
That was her solution to everything. A band aid of liquid. For months of her life she had filled herself up on tea, painting her insides pale brown to cover up the bleak darkness that lay underneath. The delicate aromas doing their best to replace the undeniable stench that she would never totally be able to loose.
She was her mother’s daughter in the tea brewing.
It was only once they had gotten the call to say that the police had caught the driver of the RV that Y/N went home.
She had expected that to be the end of it, her part in the whole drama should have been over seeing as though she was just a friend of the families rather than a relation of either girl. But she got a phone call early the next morning from the detective working the case saying that she needed to come in to five a statement and be put through a lie detector test.
Y/N had agreed pretty much immediately, though there was no denying how her palms instantly became sweaty, recalling the last time that she had been taken to a police station.
The last time she had been put through a lie detector.
Back home.
Her knee bounced insistently up and down as she sat in the waiting room of the police station. Her eyes darted sporadically around the room, seeing everything but taking in nothing.
“Miss Y/L/N? I’m Detective Loki, we spoke on the phone?” Y/N stood as the tall man addressed her, taking his offered hand with a quick, nervous shake before dropping it back to the other, tangling her fingers together. Her eyes fixed on his lips as they moved to form words, not daring to raise them higher than that.
“Yes, of course. Just Y/N is fine, though,” she responded, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Right. Follow me,” Y/N did as instructed, her mind wandering as they walked seemingly endlessly down the hallways of the police station, only rarely crossing anyone else.
She wanted to ask how long it would take - she had a shipment arriving of tables, chairs and another coffee machine that she had placed weeks ago but had been continually delayed. She needed to be there when it arrived but she didn’t want to ask the detective anything.
“Sorry to have kept you waiting,” Loki said, gesturing for her to take the seat on the opposite side of the table to him, next to the man operating the lie detector.
Y/N didn’t need a lit detector to hear the untruth in his voice.
“Not as all,” she promised softly, her eyes fixing now on the grimy table between them.
“I just have a few questions for you about last night,” he opened his notepad and Y/N nodded.
“Anything to help,” she tried to hide how her breath quickened.
Her eyes moved from their placed locked on the table to search the room for an escape.
Just in case, she told herself.
Old habits die hard.
The first few questions were standard, simple answered that Y/N was used to having to answer by now. She pushed down the memories that tried to come to the surface as best she could, squeezing her eyes closed desperately.
“Is there something wrong, Miss Y/L/N?” Loki broke off from questioning to ask the woman. Y/N swallowed thickly and shook her head.
“No,” her voice was hoarse. “I arrived late to the meal because I had to close up shop,” she answered the previously asked question, wishing herself as far away from the police station as possible. There was a pause from the detective and Y/N hated herself for her panic causing a break in questioning.
He had to find the girls as quickly as possible and she didn’t want to be the reason for the investigation to be slowed down even just a little bit.
“Right.” Loki said unsurely and from the corner of her eye, Y/N saw the lie detector operator shrug his shoulders. “And where is it that you work?”
“The bakery up the road.”
The remainder of the interview passed in a blur with Y/N answering questions almost on autopilot.
She stumbled out of the confined room as soon as she was unhooked from the machine and crashed against the wall of the hallway, pressing her back to it and desperately gasping for breath. She slid down the wall to the floor, her eyes squeezed tight shut as she desperately attempted to gain control of her breathing. She pressed her forehead to her knees, willing herself to calm down, wishing herself away from the police station and from all the memories it forced to the surface.
She wasn’t trapped anymore.
