DISCLAIMER: IF YOU LIKE THE MOVIES, I UNDERSTAND, THEY'RE PRETTY COOL, AND I WOULD'VE LIKED THEM TOO IF I HADN'T READ THE BOOKS FIRST
As someone who grew up reading and rereading the twelve How To Train Your Dragon books, and who still ranks them in her top 10's as a 23 year old - I woke up today, as I often do, absolutely seething that the movies exist at all.
I mean, for years I thought the Hobbit movies were the most atrocious book-film adaptation ever made, but at least the Hobbit movies actually kept the most basic elements of the original storyline. And I could go on and on about how comparatively (COMPARATIVELY) heartless and generic the HTTYD movies are as an adaptation, but I'm just gonna say the one detail that always gets me furious beyond reason. And here it is:
I absolutely hate that movie Toothless is an incredibly rare, mysterious, never-before-seen breed, when the whole point of Toothless is that he's the most common dragon there is. His breed is common as dirt, he's the size of a Jack Russell terrier, and his teeth aren't retractable - they're not there. He's laughably ordinary, and the only thing that sets him apart from other dragons is that he loves and cares for Hiccup.
(By the way, the reason it's so cool that he loves Hiccup is that dragons and vikings aren't enemies in the book - they work and hunt and live together like humans and dogs have done for thousands of years, if you're interested)
