Fic summary: Calypso starts studying at a new university, but to her annoyance her new flatmate is a loud mouthed mechanic who also likes to sneak his dog in whenever. But as she learns to know him better, she realizes they might have more in common than what she first thought. Eventually, even the darkest secrets come out…

Chapter summary: At Waystation, pt 3/?

A/N: Chapter 30 already! This chapter was not an easy one to edit as I was insecure about a lot of things, but hey, it's out now and that's what matters, right? I am so aware things are progressing a bit slowly right now but I feel it's kind of 'necessary' to have a bit of down time before things start going down. (Not that I'm capable of writing actual drama.) Well, at least we'll find out a bit more about Leo's past in this chapter.

After breakfast Leo asked Calypso if she would like him to give her a tour around Waystation. She agreed, but Leo couldn’t help but raise his eyebrow at his family members when Georgina asked if she could go with the flatmates and Leo’s mothers told her that they needed Georgie’s help in some Christmas chores.

“What?” Josephine asked innocently when she noticed Leo staring.

“I dunno, tía Jo. It just kinda seems like you don’t want Georgie to hang out with us,” he stated bluntly.

“That’s not accurate at all, Leo,” she denied. “I’d gladly let Georgina go with you but we really do need her help around here. Christmas isn’t coming if we all just slack off, right, Emmie?”

“I agree, dear. I haven’t even…” Emmie’s hesitance only deepened Leo’s suspicions. “...hmmm, taken care of our mistletoes yet.”

“Mistletoes?” Leo crossed his arms over his chest, briefly daring to wonder what would happen if he and Calypso were under one of those plants at the same time. He shook his head to dispel such an idea.

“Didn’t we agree that we don’t need stuff like that? You don’t even like Christmas!”

“I may agree that this holiday is way too commercial these days, but since Emmie has some mistletoes growing in her greenhouse anyway, I don’t see why we wouldn’t use them,” Jo commented. “It’s nice that Georgie gets to experience some of the old traditions even if we grownups don’t care about them.”

“Whatever,” Leo rolled his eyes, knowing he wouldn’t win that battle.

“Um, if you need extra hands,” Calypso joined the conversation, addressing Jo and Emmie, “I don’t have to go with Leo. I’d love to help too.”

Leo felt a twinge of disappointment because of Calypso’s suggestion. His insecure side yelled that maybe he had misread Calypso’s intentions all along.

“Oh, no, no!” Emmie denied immediately. “You are our guest; we want you to take it easy and enjoy your stay here. I bet Leo’s tour is a lot more fun than us peeling way too many potatoes and carrots for the casserole.”

“I wouldn’t mind peeling potatoes,” Calypso mumbled but Leo’s mothers pretended they didn’t even hear that. The flatmates simply had to accept that they wouldn’t have a chaperone - except maybe Festus - on their tour.

Once the two of them were outside, Leo’s thoughts went back to the time when he had first arrived at Waystation. Back then, he had been only 15, having just escaped from his latest foster home, which had been located far away in New Mexico. His foster family there had hidden their opinion on him very badly, giving him sly remarks about his looks and telling him to speak clearer English even though Leo’s English had always been fine, thanks to his real mother allowing him to learn both Spanish and English as a small kid. They had also made him do the hard work such as carrying heavy loads while the other foster kid of the family got the easy tasks. And when he had come home from school with bad grades, the foster parents had commented: “why do we even bother with you?”

At some point Leo had simply had enough, and by selling some of the few belongings he had he had managed to gather just enough money for one plane ticket and so he flew to Indianapolis without telling anything to his foster family.

After living on the streets and successfully dodging the authorities for a couple of weeks, the police finally found him and contacted the local social workers. Thankfully, after Leo put all his convincing skills to use, they agreed to not send him back to New Mexico, instead finding him a new foster family nearby. Leo hadn’t had high expectations because he had been in at least 6 different foster homes since his mother’s death and none of them had been a good match for him. Some had been abusive, some racist, some ignorant, some had had kids who were bullies, some had had alcohol issues… What had been common for them all was that none of them had treated him the way they should have.

That was why Leo had picked some bad habits too; he wanted to drown his feelings somehow and he ended up stealing small amounts of money from his foster family so he could buy alcohol from his older homeless ‘friends’. He had hated how it made him feel afterwards, but it had been the only way he had known how to deal with his issues. At some point he had even had suicidal thoughts because the guilt and trauma from his childhood got so bad he woke up covered in sweat after the same old fire filled nightmare almost every night. And going from foster home to foster home and feeling like none of those people cared what he really did with his life definitely didn’t help him regain his feeling of self worth. He had no future, no plans, no real friends or family and nowhere to go.

Luckily, during his worst phase in his last foster home someone from his homeless group mentioned having a relative in Indiana and that he was hoping to move there at some point in hopes of getting a new start for his life. That idea sparked something in Leo’s mind and when he started planning his big escape, Indianapolis was the first place that he thought of.

When he finally met Jo and Emmie, he was surprised. Seeing them spending time with their then 5-year-old adoptive daughter, he could tell that these women genuinely cared about the little girl and did everything for her wellbeing. Not only that, Jo was a mechanic just like Leo’s real mother and they had also other things in common. With some patience and showing that they cared, simply by making sure that Leo ate, rested and had something to do with his time other than dwelling on his sad past, they eventually won him over. And when Leo discovered thanks to Jo’s help that he himself had the skills to become a mechanic someday as well, he finally had a goal to reach and studying wasn’t quite as big a struggle for him anymore.

Soon, however, Leo became afraid that Jo and Emmie wouldn’t want to keep him around because he still had some bad days when he literally had to be dragged from his bed. He was also worried that maybe the women had heard what he had done in his past and were silently judging him. Instead, they surprised him by telling him that they wanted to officially adopt him much like Georgina because he was a part of their family now. As an added bonus they assigned him for therapy sessions, which really helped and the days when he didn’t want to do anything became less and less. Leo knew he was still a work in progress but this family had helped him so much and he had found his purpose, his home, at Waystation.

Calypso had naturally noticed Leo’s silence so eventually she asked:

“Are you OK? You’re being unusually quiet.”

“Oh, yeah, just dandy!” Leo exclaimed, trying to act more like his usual self. “I was just thinking about the times when I first moved in here.”

“Really? Do you want to tell me more about that?” Calypso asked curiously.

“I guess it won’t hurt.” Leo shrugged. “I don’t remember if I’ve told you that I was in a lot of foster homes before I got here. Well, my last foster parents were really shitty people and I was this close to… I dunno, doing something desperate. So I decided to just leave and ended up here in Indianapolis. I, um, was homeless for a bit but when the social workers got me into their hands they found me a new family, Jo and Emmie. At first they were supposed to only foster me for a time being but they ended up adopting me instead. I… haven’t told this to anyone, but they probably saved my life by doing that. The Leo from that time was far from the Super-Sized McSizzle that I am now,” he attempted to joke, but Calypso ignored that. Instead, she said:

“I’m sorry you had to go through that… but I’m glad you opened up about it to me.” Leo’s heart did an extra jump when he saw Calypso smiling at him supportingly. He would never get used to that. “And I’m glad Jo and Emmie adopted you.”

“Yeah, me too… When I first saw the place I was like, ‘wow, I wish I could stay here’. Obviously the people here are awesome - they are my family - but that wasn’t the only thing the 15-year-old me cared about. The cars and other machines Jo was fixing? So cool. I had only seen something like that at my childhood home and the nostalgia hit me like ‘boom’ right away.”

“I should have known it was the machines that convinced you to stay here,” Calypso teased, but Leo knew her already too well to get provoked by that.

“Nah. I mean, they’re neat and all, but Jo and Emmie did the actual convincing.”

“Okay, I believe you. So, was Jo’s garage what made you want to become a mechanical engineer?” Calypso asked.

“I guess the spark was always there but it took me a while to convince myself that I should try to pursue that goal. But when I started going to school again regularly – long story, don’t ask – I noticed that the sciences were easy for me, I was also decent enough at drawing – which of course helps with the blueprints and stuff – and Jo let me try fixing some of the simpler machines she had and turned out I wasn’t half bad. It was Jo and Emmie who kept pushing me to apply for the uni, though, because they believed in me more than I did. I’m thankful that they did it but… sometimes I still doubt...” Leo hadn’t talked about his insecurities even to his adoptive mothers so he felt that the fact that he was able to open up about it to Calypso was a big deal.

“I’ve seen you fix countless items,” Calypso said slowly. “I’ve noticed that you’re always… so different when you’re fiddling with your machines. More relaxed. Calmer. Surer of what you do. And your eyes sparkle and you hum some old school rock song while you work and I can just tell that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.”

Leo had to avert his eyes from her because he was afraid he would do something stupid like cry if he looked at her too long in that moment. No matter how encouraging his family, friends and the therapist were… it was still hard to get used to the compliments. And if he was honest to himself, he probably valued Calypso’s opinion more than anyone else’s at that point.

“Wow… umm… I don’t know how to answer that…” He rubbed the back of his neck.

“A simple thank you would probably do,” Calypso replied. “But know that I mean what I say. Now, how about you show me that famous garage?”

Leo did as he was told. He introduced Calypso to all the tools and machinery they used to fix whatever item the customer happened to bring in. He had a feeling that Calypso probably didn’t have any idea what he was talking about half the time because he tended to get very technical with the terms when he got excited, but she still seemed content listening to him. At least she wasn’t telling him to stop, which was definitely a plus.

To Leo’s surprise, Calypso went to the table where he and Jo used to draw their blueprints and asked him if she could see how he did it because she hadn’t seen his blueprints before. He complied, taking a pencil and a piece of blank paper from the stack and looking at Calypso questioningly.

“What do you want me to draw, then? I may have some experience on this but even I need some ideas first…”

“You can draw whatever you like. How about Festus?” Calypso requested.

“Festus?” Leo tapped the pencil against his chin for a moment, considering Calypso’s request. “Hmm, as you wish, Sunshine.”

He started making fast, swift motions on the paper and it didn’t take him very long to finish the sketch. Sure, the lines were a bit rough, but Calypso told him she was very impressed by how accurately he remembered even the little details, such as a dark spot on Festus’ back, how the tail curved when he was happy, and how he was missing a tiny piece of the tip of his left ear.

Leo felt a bit embarrassed by the praise. “It just comes with me hanging out with him so much. Nothing more to it, really.” He looked at the sketch for a moment. “Hold on, I feel like this is missing something. Can you look towards that window for a moment?”

“What, why?” Calypso asked, but turned anyway.

“Just adding something real quick,” Leo replied and started sketching again. He wondered if it was the lighting of the room but he thought Calypso’s cheeks seemed a bit darker than usual and she kept looking at the floor shyly. When he realized that he’d probably feel the same way if she was drawing him, he himself got flustered and decided to try to finish the drawing as quickly as possible. Within minutes he had drawn her next to Festus, playing with him, wearing the same holiday sweater and jeans she currently was.

“Can I see?” Calypso asked.

“Uh, yeah, sure.” Leo gave the picture to her. “It’s not detailed or anything but I tried.”

Calypso kept staring at it for a moment. “Leo… this looks great! I mean, I don’t think I am that pretty but I am quite amazed that you managed to do this that fast!”

Leo wanted to say that there was no way the picture did her justice but he knew that would be a never ending debate so instead he told her: “It’s the experience, Sunshine. When you draw hundreds of blueprints you learn to be fast.”

Calypso turned her attention to the drawing again. “Can I get it?” she asked after a while.

“Why?”

“Because Festus looks cute, you weirdo. That’s a good enough reason, right?”

“Fine, you can have it. I’m not sure where I’d put it anyway.” Leo shrugged. He wasn’t sure why Calypso possibly hanging the picture on her wall made him feel a bit weird. In a good way, though.

Once the two of them left the garage, Leo pointed at a smaller building next to the ‘main’ one. A couple of pointy ears were peeking from the upstairs windows. “That’s where our foster animals live. I think the kid me wished on some level that I could have a pet but my mom could never afford one… but Jo and Emmie have been fostering rescue cats and dogs even before I got here. One of them was Festus’ mum; she was pregnant when she arrived here. When she had her puppies, I noticed that one of them was a bit of an outsider and we instantly formed a bond. Jo and Emmie allowed him to stay here even though he sure would have had adopters.”

“That was really sweet of them,” Calypso commented. “Can we see who’s in there right now?”

“Sure but we should probably let Emmie know about it because she’s pretty strict about who can go in. She may ask us to wear ‘bunny suits’; some of the animals may be sick and we don’t wanna spread the bugs around.”

“No problem, let’s go see her then.”

When Emmie heard what Leo and Calypso were about to do, she promised to stop her Christmas chores for a while so she could show them (mainly Calypso) around in the rescue house. Currently she was fostering two young puppies who had been found on the streets without their mother, a mother cat with her 4 kittens who were getting close to their adoption age, and an older cat with some kidney issues who seemed to however adore the little kittens.

Leo was watching Calypso’s reactions closely as Emmie was introducing her to the kittens. Soon one of the braver kittens climbed on the girl’s lap, giving her a tiny ‘meow’ and then started nuzzling against her sleeve.

“Aww, look Leo! He loves me,” Calypso exclaimed, smiling widely as the kitten started purring loudly on her lap while she pet him. ‘He’s not the only one,’ Leo thought in his mind. Aloud he asked: “Why do you sound so surprised?”

“I guess because I’ve never really handled cats so I didn’t know how they’d react to me…” Calypso noted more seriously. But then the happiness returned to her face. “You know, this one reminds me of you! He also has long, black hair like you and fierce eyes.”

“Fierce?” Leo raised his eyebrow. “That’s what you think of me?”

Calypso seemed to want to explain but with Emmie in the room she didn’t go to details. “Um, maybe? Hey, look! Another one is coming!”

This time a small ginger kitten was approaching her and Calypso extended her arm so the kitten could sniff her. The group kept making small talk about the cats in the room and continued snuggling them, but Leo’s eyes were on Calypso the whole time. He could see how happy she was about such a simple thing as kittens and it made him feel lighter, warmer again, even though he had just remembered some very bad times a few moments earlier. Maybe all of it had been meant to happen, he wondered briefly. After all, it led him here, to his family… and Calypso.

Lotor?

(For this character ask challenge)OOF. Alright, prepare yourself for salt, because I absolutely love this character no matter what, and that is precisely why I am very mad at the official crew about him. (Though I swear this isn’t ALL salt.)

The last time I did this ask challenge, I answered these questions for Lotor here, but that was before season 5 even came out. Now…

(Putting this under a read-more because this is LONG – there’s two long playlists under the “song” section, and I added a ton of screenshots at the end.)

Favorite thing about them: I loved how complex and out-of-the-ordinary he was. He wasn’t a hero, he wasn’t a villain, and he wasn’t even a traditional antihero. He wasn’t good, but he was altruistic; he wasn’t bad, but he was willing to do things that no one else would. He was neutral, and he didn’t need to be redeemed into goodness. He certainly didn’t seem to have any reason to fall or rise – he already knew what he wanted and how he was going to get it, and both his motives and means were shockingly pure.And then…Least favorite thing about them: Season 6 just completely ruined him. That colony thing?? I’ve vented to many friends about this, and there’s a post I have half-written that I might put up sometime, but it just doesn’t make sense to me. The creators of the show said that they wanted him to be a morally gray character, but then they had had him commit a truly evil act? And he doesn’t even seem repentant for it? I just can’t forgive them for doing this to him. This wasn’t some “cool plot twist.” I’m not sitting here, thinking, “Wow, I really fell for that, didn’t I?” I don’t feel like Lotor betrayed me. I feel like the writers betrayed him and did him a disservice.Favorite line: “All I ask is that you judge me by my actions rather than your preconceptions of my race.” This line was just… wow.Also: “My father’s blood is not just in my veins. It’s also on my sword.” Damn.I also still very much love his opening speech in season 3, and a special shout-out goes to his speech in the beginning of season 6 until Sendak interrupted it.BrOTP: Mmmm, well, Team Sincline forever. In a better universe, they’re all still getting up to their own shenanigans together.I also still wish that Lotor and Keith had gotten a chance to bond. It could have been great.But let’s all take a moment to acknowledge what a great and supportive friendship Lotor and Shiro had in season 5. That was good. Good on you, (clone) Shiro.OTP: Lancelot. I can’t really explain why, but this is my favorite ship. In a close second place comes Polycline, the ship of Lotor and his generals all together in a romantic sense, which just warms my polyam-loving heart.As for what I would like to see in canon, well, I was pretty happy with Lotura, and I’m still holding out hope that they might have some dramatic redemptive reconciliation.NoTP: Eh, I don’t really do NoTPs. I can’t say I’m fond of Lotor/Throk, though.Random headcanon: I think Lotor’s ships are perfectly capable of making it through the Quantum Rift without being subjected to the time dilation effects. I also think that, on more than one occasion, Lotor has purposefully turned down the protection against time dilation because he can’t afford to take time off but he really needs a break, and what better way to accomplish that than to take a trip that will give him weeks or months to himself but will only cause him to miss about a week in regular time?Unpopular opinion:

FANWORK CONTENT CREATORS CAN STILL MAKE CONTENT WITH A SOFT CHARACTERIZATION FOR LOTOR. SHIPPERS CAN STILL SHIP LOTOR/PALADIN SHIPS. CANON SHOULD NEVER LIMIT CREATIVITY.

Song i associate with them: Hoo boy, I have not one but two playlists for him… Instead of linking a playlist, I’ll just list the songs for you all to find at your leisure, since everyone uses different music services (and honestly, I just pirate off of YouTube 99% of the time).

My “canon” playlist, in chronological order, is:

Natural by Imagine Dragons – I’m so glad this came out recently, because if there’s any singular theme song that fits Lotor in every canonical aspect, this is it.

Who We Are by Imagine Dragons – Team Sincline. Need I say more?

Best Day of My Life (minor key) by Chase Holfelder – If you only know this song in its major form, you might very well be wondering why it’s here, but Chase Holfelder’s minor key version has a very different tone to it, and I think it fits Lotor quite well for season 3.

Gold by Imagine Dragons – This works for his rise to power in season 3 and fall in season 4, as well as hinting at his eventual rise and fall again in 5 & 6 and that final snap at the end of 6. It could honestly go at the end, but I thought it fit best here, as the season 4 song.

Icarus by Bastille – I associate this song with both Keith and Lotor in seasons 3 & 4. Honestly, if you listen to the chorus, it sounds like them both at the end of season 4. Icarus (Lotor) is flying too close to the sun… Icarus (Keith) is flying towards an early grave.

Blame by Bastille – This isn’t a perfect fit, but it reminds me of Lotor’s pleading with the Paladins at the beginning of season 5 to not hand him over to Zarkon. Honestly, I sort of picture Lance as the one singing the scathing verses. There’s no room for you here.

I’m So Sorry by Imagine Dragons – This could also go anywhere, but I can picture this as a backdrop to Lotor’s final confrontation with Zarkon. It’s so scathing and sarcastic, except for the bridge. I imagine the bridge as being addressed to Lotor’s generals.

White Blank Page by Mumford and Sons – Canon Lotura. Just… just listen to it. It’s so tragic and fits them so well for season 6.

This Is Gospel -> Emperor’s New Clothes by Panic! At the Disco – Initially, I was going to put just Emperor’s New Clothes on here for Lotor’s breakdown in season 6, but I listened to these two back-to-back, and I thought that This is Gospel fits in a tragic way if you think of it as the sane part of Lotor’s mind trying to warn Allura, knowing that he cannot fight the corruption of Quintessence.

Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing by Set It Off – …I mean, in light of season 6, how could I not include this one. The bridge is basically a summary of that final confrontation.

Viva La Vida by Coldplay – Initially, I had this as a song for season 4, but I couldn’t leave this playlist on such a bitter note. I like to picture that Lotor will eventually come out of the Quintessence field and, alone and without resources, will have to hide out somewhere and rethink a lot of things, and this song is perfect for that.

I’ll Be Good by Jaymes Young – Following the thread of an eventual redemption from the previous song, I think this would suit a redeemed, post-s6 Lotor very well. It’s also simply a very bittersweet and beautiful song to end off on, and it stands in very strong contrast against Natural, the first song on the playlist.

My other playlist is for miscellaneous songs that don’t fit into the canon timeline and for ship songs. In no particular order:

Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea by Fall Out Boy – This is such a Lotor song, but it technically doesn’t fit canon, since he did become emperor. However, I’ve got an AU story that this fits perfectly, and I think it suits a lot of other Lotor-centric AUs I’ve seen. Besides, thematically, it really does fit Lotor pre-s5.

Broken Crown by Mumford & Sons – The meaning of this song is ambiguous, but if you interpret the “crown” here as literal, it could suit Lotor pretty well, especially in an AU where he refuses to rule.

Therapy by All Time Low – I think this would fit a human AU best, but it could work for any version of Lotor who is introspective about his own flaws and problems.

Battlefield (Meet Me on the Battlefield) by SVRCINA – I’m a little iffy on this one, but someone else recommended it to me as a Lotor ship song, and I do think it could fit a few different Lotor ships quite nicely. The song is primarily about revolution and altruism, both of which fit Lotor, and the romantic aspects would work well for a Lotor/paladin ship.

I Walk the Line by Halsey & Walking the Wire by Imagine Dragons – These two songs work well as two sides of the same coin. I particularly imagine them for Lancelot. Lotor sings I Walk the Line, talking about the difficulty of maintaining a balance between his relationship and his loyalties in the war but declaring that he will be true to Lance above all, and Lance sings the far more optimistic Walking the Wire, saying that although this balancing act is difficult, they will come out on top, together. It could theoretically work for another Lotor ship, but Walking the Wire is such a Lance song that I really picture it for the two of them.

Hold Me Tight or Don’t by Fall Out Boy – Funny story, I pictured this as a Sheith song first, but then @noirsongbird recommended it to me as a Lancelot song, and… yeah, it fits. It also specifically fits one of her (very good!) fanfics, so that’s cool.

King and Lionheart by Of Monsters and Men – Technically, this could sort of work for any Lotor/paladin ship, but I think it would work better for Keitor, Shotor, or Lancelot. It was recommended to me by @noirsongbird as a Lancelot song, and I have to agree that it fits them very well.

I Don’t Know Why by Imagine Dragons – Again, this could work for multiple Lotor/paladin ships, but I picture it for Lancelot. It’s a great forbidden love song, so it would suit a secret romance across battle lines quite nicely.

So… yeah. A lot of music. Sorry? I’m sure this isn’t even everything, haha.

In canon, Musiea is 162 cm tall, or about 5′3″. That’s definitely on the shorter side for an adult female of European descent.

For the most part. She’s a caregiver to war orphans, and so far, none of them are in danger of ending up taller than she is. However, she wishes she could be a little bit taller when someone decides to do something like hold an object she needs way above her head for his own amusement.

▸      WHAT’S    THEIR    HAIR    LIKE ?

Healthy and thick, and soft to the touch. When she lets it down, it reaches about the middle of her back and has a very slight waviness to it near the ends.

▸     DO    THEY    SPEND    A    LOT    OF    TIME    ON    THEIR    HAIR     /    GROOMING ?

She takes care of herself, hygienically speaking, so her skin is clear and her hair suffers minimal damage. When she was little, the only loss she experienced was symbolic. Her family was big and they were poor, and her mother was sick. A certain rare medicine was required to bring her back from death’s door, and out of desperation, her father called upon a certain group of thieves, thinking it would be cheaper to hire them to steal the medicine. It turned out to be quite costly, and Musiea’s father knew that if he didn’t pay up his life would be in danger. In a moment of panic, he offered to hand over his second-youngest child, and his only daughter. The thieves agreed, thinking the little girl could be an excuse for them to venture into the lucrative world of human trafficking. She was terrified, upset, and betrayed, thinking her family just didn’t want her anymore (that wasn’t the case at all, as she finds out later. Her mother’s illness worsened despite acquiring the medicine, the grief of her daughter being lost forever to her being too great, and her father eventually died from a health decline likely resulting from the guilt of selling his child to save his life). She eventually learns of her parents’ deaths after unexpectedly being reunited with her brothers many years later, but she had considered them dead for years prior to that. Her only regret was hating them for so long when her mother in particular was devastated.

As for actual deaths, absolutely. In canon, Musiea has been seeking out Escher in order to exact revenge for killing her adoptive family, a priest and some sisters at a monastery she escaped to. Escher had killed them on a job, as the priest had broken a contract he had with someone involved in the criminal underworld. The priest was pretending to take in orphans out of kindness, but turning around and trafficking them, saying they had been adopted. The sisters were in on the scheme as well, so they also had to be killed. Even after finding out the truth, Musiea’s feelings toward them remain complicated.

▸      WHAT    ARE    SOME    FOND    MEMORIES    YOUR    MUSE    HAS ? 

She has some fond memories of her younger years, playing with her brothers in particular. She also looks fondly upon certain points after being given up to the thieves. Overall, it was a dark time in her life, but it was bearable thanks to the reluctant kindness of a boy who had been tasked with looking out for her.

▸     IS    IT    EASY    FOR    YOUR    MUSE    TO    KILL ?

Not at all. She spent three years looking for Escher with the intention of seeking out revenge, but neither of the first lives she took were his. At that point, she cried, feeling guilty for what she’d done, and ashamed of having to kill in order to save her own life. Some guidance from Escher made the next time easier, but overall, it was still done with a heavy heart. It’s not something she’d want to do ever again.

▸      WHAT’S    IT    LIKE    WHEN    YOUR    MUSE    BREAKS    DOWN ?

She’s transparent. Her emotions have always been strong, and she’s had no issue with crying or getting angry. If her feelings on the matter that’s upsetting her are especially complex, there may be additional frustration thrown in.

▸      IS    YOUR    MUSE    CAPABLE    OF    TRUSTING    SOMEONE    WITH    THEIR    LIFE ?

Yes. She does so, with Escher. While her fighting skills are excellent, his are superior. During their first Ark Arena battle, she was even required to work together with him to secure victory, even though they weren’t exactly getting along at that point. She was required to trust him in order to save both of their lives, and although it wasn’t easy, she did it in the end.

▸      WHAT’S    YOUR    MUSE    LIKE    WHEN    THEY’RE    IN    LOVE ?

She tends to be on the shy side, easily flustered and with a tendency to let her words come out with more harshness than she intends. However, her actions speak louder than her words, and her actions consist of shy embraces and light hand squeezes. In the bedroom, she is attentive and agreeable, not minding things getting rough if she trusts her partner. Her devotion more than makes up for her lack of experience. She may call him an idiot if he’s being one, but he’s her idiot, and she wouldn’t trade him for anyone else.

"Are you you alright?" Loki asked, looking back at the girl trudging slowly along in the snow behind him.

"I'm good," she replied, nearly out of breath. "I think taking tea to go helped. The heated cable car didn't hurt either."

"Do you not own a warmer jacket? Or pants for that matter," Loki replied irritably. She looked winded and he wasn't sure he was capable of carrying both her and her bags the rest of the way.  

"What, you don't like my leggings?" she asked, sticking her leg out to admire them. "They have snowflakes on them!"

"They're... well... I don't know what they are."

"They're comfortable, that's what they are," she snapped back. 

For the first time all day, Loki felt she was genuinely annoyed with him and it made him smile. It was, in fact, refreshing. "I have no qualms with your snowflakes. You simply look cold."

"I'm fine," she said quietly, waving her hand dismissively as she yawned. “Just tired."

"Are we close?" he asked, slowing his pace to let her catch up.

"I believe it's just past these trees. The driveway should be here," she said, walking around a large shrub to find a mailbox, brushing snow off of it to find the number. "Yes! This IS it."

Loki put the bags down and rubbed his shoulders. Neither his strength nor his magic were at their full potential, but they weren't entirely sapped either. He suspected Odin had something to do with that. He suspected his mother had something to do with the latter.

"Are you okay?" Anna asked, looking at Loki. He was starting to look as tired as she was. "I can take them the rest of the way."

"I'm fine. Let's just get there."

"Agreed. The driveway looks long, but it's not."

"And how would you know that?"

"Eh, I might've trespassed a few times," she said casually. "But I never broke in! Much as I wanted to.”

"I'll have you arrested later," Loki said, smiling slightly to himself at the chuckles emanating from her. "For now, I think we both require rest."

"Cheers to that. I haven't slept in days. What about you?"

"Days for me as well," he replied. Truth be told, he couldn't remember the last time he slept, not properly anyway. It had probably been weeks. His new, less able body was certainly beginning to feel the effects of that.

"Luke, look! Just there."

Loki glanced up to find a large, modern, dark wood house laden with many floor to ceiling windows peeking through the trees ahead of them. He appreciated the privacy, the minimalism of it, the way the wood blended in well with the surroundings, camouflaging itself within the trees. Still, it was no Asgardian palace.

“What do you think?” Anna asked, surprised by his lack of a response.

"It will have to do."

"Have to do? It's the most beautiful, most interesting house I've ever seen!" she said, shaking her head in disbelief at him. "I can't believe I'm staying here. You can still say no."

"Don't be absurd," he said, placing the bags down as they reached the front door, conjuring the key in his pocket so she wouldn't suspect anything. In no  realm would he ever have invited a stranger of any kind to share his dwelling. But even if he had his reservations now he would certainly not go back on his word. 

"Wow," she gasped as she walked in the front door behind him, getting a look at the sterile, all-black stone foyer, lit only by the soft orange glow of a danish pendant lamp hanging overhead. "This is... like... "

"Prison?" Loki said, setting her belongings on a nearby bench.

"I was going to say more like a hotel or a spa, but okay Mr. Negative," she said playfully.

Before he had a chance to respond, Anna cut eagerly by him and headed down the narrow hallway in front of them in the direction of what looked like natural light.

The two walked into a long, massive kitchen lined entirely on one side with floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out onto the sea and town below. The cabinets were a sleek, modern walnut, the counters and large island a stark, shiny white. Several pots of herbs grew on the counters, reaching up towards the lights underneath the cabinets above. There wasn't a pan or dirty plate to be found. Not a speck on the counters. The place was truly a minimalist’s dream.

"You can see the cathedral!" Anna exclaimed as she looked out the window, immediately removing her finger from the glass and buffing the smudge out with her sleeve. "Sorry."

"Don't be," Loki said dismissively, walking over to survey the land below them. He stared out at the peculiar building with a spiraled belfry that fascinated her so much. “I’m glad you like it.”

"You don't?"

"I'm simply used to grander dwellings."

"Oh," she nodded, trying to fathom what could possibly be grander than this.  

She followed him beyond the kitchen through the sunken living room, another large yet dark, cozy space, with plenty of stocked bookshelves and a quaint fireplace with a white fur rug before it. Next to the fireplace were more large windows looking out onto the dense forest, thick with pines. Windows on the opposite end of the room looked out to the sea. Anna quickly spotted a chair with an overarching chrome lamp hanging above that she'd likely love to fall asleep in. 

They eventually found their bedrooms on opposite sides of the house, much to Loki's relief. Each had a large balcony that looked onto the water and bathrooms with massive rain-head showers and soaking tubs. Anna squealed with delight at every turn. Every inch of the place was unbelievable.

"I have a proposal," she said excitedly, clasping her hands together as they walked back into the kitchen. "I'd love to cook for us."

"Now?" Loki asked, yawning loudly as he rubbed his eyes. 

"Not unless you’re hungry," she said with a laugh. "I mean, I can be responsible for meals. I don't exactly have money, but I have legs. The cable car is a short walk. I’d be happy to go into town each day."

"I'm certain I can hire help. I wouldn't ask you to-"

"Don't be ridiculous," she insisted. "I haven't been able to work for months. I need a sense of purpose. It's the absolute least I can do."

"Why? Haven't you been able to work, I mean," Loki asked, opening drawers and refrigerator doors to inspect their contents. The basics were there, tea, milk, bread, butter. They would need more provisions soon.

"I've had health problems," she said casually, scratching the back of her head as she looked out the windows. "Just haven't physically been able to."

"Care to expand on that?" 

"Do I have to?"

"No," he said, shaking his head, feeling slightly embarrassed for asking. "Of course not. My apologies."

"It's nothing contagious," she promised. "It's just complicated. You won’t have to worry about it."

"If you cannot make it to town -"

"I can. I really can. Please? Say yes."

"You are not a  prisoner here," he said quietly, looking outside, his voice and his mind both distant. "You may do as you wish, come and go as you wish. I will leave you the funds you desire."

Anna clapped her hands, wanting to run to Loki and hug him. She didn’t.

"I require ample amounts of solitude," Loki said, suddenly serious. He didn't wish to make her uncomfortable, but he needed to lay out some ground rules if they were going to live together. "When I am studying, reading, I do not wish to be disturbed. When I am in my chambers, I do not wish to be disturbed. I may be on holiday, but I still have... many things to contemplate. And I need ample privacy to do so."

"Of course, I won’t get in your way," she nodded, suddenly straightening herself at his solemn demeanor.  She wasn't offended at all by his words, for she knew, as grateful as she was for him, that they were strangers and she was in his territory. "But if you need anything on a dime, coffee, tea, a sandwich, some fresh laundry, I'm your girl. Just let me know."

"I do not wish for you to be my servant."

"I know, but it would make me feel better. This house, this lifestyle, this is something extraordinary and I feel like I need to earn my keep. Anything you need, please, let me help."

"As you wish," Loki said, resigned to her insistence. If she wanted to cook him meals and clean, who was he to stop her? Truth be told, those were mundane tasks he'd rather not perform himself.

"Oh, shit!" Anna suddenly yelled at the sight of something behind Loki. She jumped back and covered her chest with her hand, looking as though she were about to have a heart attack.

Loki turned, ready to conjure his daggers but didn't. His heart sank, however, at the sight of the familiar blonde buffoon smiling on the other side of the balcony glass, waving enthusiastically.

"Who the hell IS that?" Anna said, her eyes still wide.

Loki's jaw tensed and his eyes narrowed. 

"My brother."

Enya’s Unexpected Journey - Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Summary: Enya decides to take a dive into the river. And wait a minute... did a certain stubborn dwarf prince just flirt with her?

Enya's first day in the company was a lot more fun than she expected. Most of the dwarves were very friendly and treated her like one of the guys. Exceptions were Dwalin and the grumpy Thorin Oakenshield himself. Although Dori was still a little afraid of her, he appreciated her sincere apology and by the time the light was fading, he was brave enough to talk to her. ‘Did you ever curse anyone?’ he asked. Enya laughed. ‘No, Dori! I have no idea how to do such a thing!’ ‘So that means we are all safe from your wrath?’ ‘Only if you behave.’ Enya smiled and winked at him. ‘But you are a witch.’ He stated. ‘Yes, I am.’ ‘Do you know cool tricks?’ Enya stared at her hands. ‘Not yet. And I’m not sure what exactly I’m capable of, so it might take a while before I can show you something.’ Dori stared at her. ‘You don’t know what you’re capable of?’ ‘Well… I mean, I found out I am able to do this the moment you guys did…’ Dori shivered. ‘You do control these unnatural powers, don’t you miss Enya?’ ‘Yes. If you let me practice in peace every night.’ Dori seemed relieved and went on chatting about the life he and his brother Ori had before they decided to join Thorin on this journey. Enya wondered in silence why it was so easy to win over almost everyone from the company, and extremely frustrating hard to get Thorin to smile.

Thorin decided that they would spent the night on a large platform (could it have been an observation post?) in the mountain area they were crossing. While they set up their camp, Enya joked around with Fíli and Kíli and threatened to turn them into ice sculptures if they tried any of their 'welcome to our company' pranks on her. They laughed and sneaked off. She saw Thorin eyeing the scene from a distance. The way he glanced at his nephews made her a bit uncomfortable. He certainly knew how to look intimidating. Enya decided to do the opposite of what he expected her to do and walked to him. 'Any particular reason why you chose to look so angry today?' Thorin looked up at her and she saw he tried his best not to smile. 'I was thinking.' 'Then it must have been dreadful, because you looked like you were ready to kill something.' 'I always am.' He simply said. Bastard. Enya smiled. 'If you need me, I'll be in the woods.' She stood up. ‘You will not venture these woods on your own.’ ‘I won’t?’ ‘No.’ Enya smirked. ‘I don’t recall any specification in my contract about having to oblige the wishes a dwarf leader with an ill-favored temper!’ Thorin studied his fingernails and refused to look her in the eye. ‘No, but it does state that you have to follow my orders.’ ‘Is this an order?’ Thorin gave her a little smile, which was enough to make her do EVERYTHING he wanted. She was very bad at playing hard to get, a skill he obviously mastered to the perfection. ‘You annoying breathtaking bastard!’ Her mind scowled. She did not dare to say that to the man, dwarf himself. She wondered what he would do to her. ‘It is, miss.’ He simply said. Oh that matter-of-factly irritating tone! She sighed. ‘FINE.’ This time, she refused to look at him. ‘Sent whoever you like.’ She said and paced into the woods, without waiting for an answer.

When Enya woke up, it was some time before dawn. She slowly stood up (she did not want to wake the others) and slipped through the borders of the camp. She just wanted to disappear in the forest when- 'Christ!' She muttered. 'Sir Oakenshield, do you ever sleep? Or do you secretly enjoy attempting to scare me to death?' Thorin grinned and seemed quite happy with himself. 'I might, but today I just came back from a swim in the river.' Oh yes, he certainly looked like he just took a swim. Enya almost gasped when she saw that his hair was still wet. God, she really had to keep herself together before she would melt down at his feet! She cursed her bloody hormones in silence for making her lose her mind when just looking at the guy. One thing was certain: the lack of sex in the last few months was catching up with her. 'You look hungry.' Thorin eyed her curiously. Enya tried not to giggle and pressed her lips in a little smile. Why would he even say such a thing? He seemed like he meant it, but her dirty mind translated it in a whole other direction. 'That I am.' FOR YOU! Her mind added. Enya bit her lip and scrambled herself together. 'But I wanted to take a dive myself before everyone wakes up and starts walking around in the area where I don’t want them to be in.' 'I wonder what you would do.' Thorin mused. HE DID NOT JUST SAY THAT! Enya hold back another giggle. Why did he make her giggle? It made her feel like a love-sick teenage girl, which was hardly appropriate for a woman in her mid-twenties. And a witch too, for god sake. Enya narrowed her eyes. 'Keep on wondering. If I will see one of you, there will be hell to pay.' 'I would not dare to sneak on you, miss' he answered, but his eyes told her a different story. Wait, what? He was definitely flirting with her. She licked her lips. She wanted to make a move, but her courage and sharp tongue were not cooperating. 'Well... I'm off then.' She muttered, because she could not think about anything better to say. She quickly turned away and walked through the forest until she found the river. She hoped the cold water would cool her off. Especially her mind.

Although the water did make her feel clean and she had found a pumice to scrub the dirt off, her mind did not shut up. She hummed a song while she swam up and down the riverbanks. After a while she got fed up and she decided to get out of the water. She quickly grabbed the old rag she snatched from the camp. Although it didn't look that clean, anything could suffice as a towel. She roughly pressed it against her body until she was almost dry. She went to put on her clothes, but... Hang on! Where were her trousers? And her shirt? Where did her jacket go? She nervously looked around but her panties, corset and boots were the only clothing left. She grunted. Her bet was on two rascals she threatened just yesterday... Quickly she put on her panties and tied herself up in her corset as tight as she could. She sighed and did not know if she wanted to burst into laughter or to let out her frustation. She sat down to put on her boots, but stopped when she saw Thorin appearing from the woods. With her clothes. And from the look he had on his face, his playful flirty Thorin was gone. Shit. 'Why are you-?' She said. 'Did you-?' 'No. I happened to see two rascals sneaking off with your clothes.' He said with his teeth clenched. He breathed heavily and tried not to look at her. Did he blush? Oh, right. She vaguely became beware that she only wore panties. And a corset. 'Yeah, sorry. I will, -wait.' He threw her clothing at her, quickly turned around and paced away. Enya put her clothes and boots on in the highest speed she could manage and ran after him. 'Wait!' She screamed and almost bumped into him when he suddenly stopped. He jerked her against a tree, like he did the day they met, and the look on his face was malignant. She realized that the furious Thorin, with a ‘I am ready to shred your panties’ gaze on his face was very much capable of making her legs tremble. Oh yes, she desired him more than anything she ever wanted in this world. Or her own world. 'What were you doing?"'He hissed. 'I...' she whispered and gazed into his eyes. Her mind went blank. Great. She hated the fact that every time she really needed her witty remarks and sharp tongue, they simply refused to cooperate. Even her razor-sharp reflexes were in awe. She sighed. 'You could have waited in the water! If I had not encountered them and brought your clothes back, would you really just walked like that to the camp?' he let out a deep sigh. 'What was I supposed to do?' She shot back. Yes. She found her tongue again. 'Wait IN THE WATER? Really? I'm sorry that I only realized what happened AFTER I got out! There was no point going back, so I decided to find those two bastards!' Thorin squared his jaw and stared at her. 'You are too rash miss, attempting to walk through the woods like that and showing everyone-!' He didn't finish his sentence and breathed heavily. Enya blushed. 'I am sorry. I did not want to embarrass you. Or the others. It's just...' She started to tremble. 'It's just that I was raised a lot more... less constraining, I suppose. Until a few weeks ago I lived by THOSE rules, in MY world! Sometimes I do not realize that things work differently here.' 'They do.' He bit back. 'I apologize.' She said. Thorin grunted and let her go. She leaned against the tree and tried not to cry. Maybe she was too bold for him. She was so caught up by her thoughts that she did not see him turning around. All of a sudden his face was inches away from hers. He cupped her face with his hands in a surprisingly soft manner. Wow! 'Miss Enya' he whispered. Yet again she forgot how to breathe when she heard his low husky voice. 'Please adopt our rules, as you call it, as quickly as you can. It is difficult to contain my men around you when you are... like that.' He muttered. As he turned away from her, Enya could swear she heard him whisper very softly: 'let alone myself...' She moaned softly when he disappeared in the woods again and left her trembling at the root of the tree. Great! She had to get used to the fact she knew nothing of the social rules in middle earth. Why did Tolkien not write about these things? She groaned in frustration and sat down on the ground. It seemed that she was capable to make a fool out of herself when she was around him. Enya sighed. Although she had acted like a fool, she was happy to know that he was not immune to her. He flirted with her...right? She shrugged. She had to come up with a plan to behave more appropriately. Maybe she could ask Gandalf how respectful dwarf ladies behaved. He would know. She hoped…
