Your eyes itched as you dragged them open the next morning. The tears you shed last night had completely exhausted you by the time you got back to your room in the Palace, you had just flopped into bed without changing, skirts covered in melted icing.
A part of you was glad for it, as you had something to distract yourself from the soreness of heart break in your chest. You had no idea what you were going to do when you headed to court. The King’s personal guard would be there, and as far as you were aware, he hadn’t seen you the previous night.
Which means to him, nothing had gone wrong between the two of you.
You weren’t sure what to do knowing that. You could: A) Pretend nothing is wrong, carry on with this affair like you’d never seen what you had, or B) End things with the Orc and live with the guilt of what you did for the rest of your life.
Option A was just too difficult for you to do. You couldn’t bare the thought of doing something so heartless to that lovely Orc lady who worked in the kitchens. She was too kind to you, and always willing to lend a shoulder when you needed it… She would be a great mother.
So, it looks like option B is the only way to go.
As you finished remaking your bed, a shaky sigh escaped you as you leaned against your mattress, trying to steady yourself to face the day.
Leaving your quarters, you walked through the halls with your head in the clouds, thinking about how exactly you were supposed to end this affair. Would the King’s guard be angry? Upset?
After stewing on it, a wave of indignity washed over you. Really, none of this is your fault, it’s not like you were aware of his marriage. So, why should you be the one to break it off?
Of course, the last thing you wanted was to stay with the Orc, but if anything, he should be the one ending things with you! He was the one who chose to lie to you and hurt you in that way.
But how would you send that message to him? It’s not like you could just tell him what you saw. He might try to convince you to stay with him and you would not be persuaded into doing such a thing.
… Maybe, if you ignored him, he’d get the message and just leave you alone? Then that way, he’d know that you were angry with him and then, he would have no choice but to apologise to you. He’s not a stupid Orc, he should realise sooner or later what you were upset with him about.
But then, how do you regain your dignity as a Lady?
You chewed your lip as you greeted the Queen, apologised for your lateness and then followed her, alongside the other ladies in waiting to the throne room.
Thinking about this anymore would have to wait. You had a job to do as the Queens lady in waiting.
Their excited whispers brought you back down to Earth.
“Do you think that he’s handsome?”
“I don’t know, have you ever seen a forest dweller before?”
“Well no, but that doesn’t mean that he’s not good looking!”
“(Y/N) what do you think?”
“Hm?” You looked over your shoulder at the others. “What are you talking about?”
“You’ve really been all over the place this week haven’t you?” One of the ladies said, “you know we’ve been preparing for the Forest Fae? Well, the Lord of the Forest Fae, is apparently, devilishly handsome. And, he’s not married or in any other kind of commitment with a woman or man!”
Another one of the ladies giggled, “do you think he’s come here looking for someone to marry?”
“Unlikely.” The third lady said, dismissively. “Men of any species love to flounder, even when they’re married. Why make their promiscuity more complicated than it has to be? You agree with me, don’t you (Y/N)?”
You didn’t answer. Due to recent experience, you had no interest in trying to romance a Fae Lord, there was no point in trying to if he was so easily led astray. “All men seemed to be like that.” You said, callously. “Even if he is loyal to those he sleeps with, I’m not looking to marry a Fae Lord.”
“Oh come on (Y/N), don’t pretend you’re not even slightly interested!”
“Ladies,” The Queen shushed and all the other women fell silent. “Gossip is unbecoming of all of you. If any of you wish to become involved with the Lord, I’ve heard he’s not one for those who spread rumours.”
Upon reaching the throne room, all the chattering of the ladies had fallen silent.
The doors to the impressive room opened, the Queen, you and the other ladies in waiting taking their respective places next to their mistress as they waited for the Fae Lord to make his entrance.
Sunlight caught the Queen’s glittering necklace, making you look around in surprise. And infuriatingly, you caught the King’s Guard’s eye. He smiled at you, eyes kind and wide like he was expecting you to return it.
Instead, you whipped your head away from him and locked on the throne room door. Other courtiers bustled around the room, discussing whatever was on the nobles minds at that moment in time.
For now, you would just have to stick to your plan of ignoring him. What else could you do until you could think of something more suitable for vengeance?
Soon, the doors to the throne room opened and the whole room fell silent.
The first few Fae glided in like they were sliding on ice, their ethereal beauty suffocating and snuffing out any other attractive person in the room. There were eight of them, four entering from opposite sides of the doors, who twirled in what looked to be spider web like dresses, their skirts sparkling in the light as they came to a stop, their long blonde hair falling down their backs with an eery gracefulness.
One of the ladies next to you mumbled something about how the Fae were so lucky, but you were so focused on not looking around at the Orc standing beside the King, that you couldn’t hear what the rest of her sentence was about.
After the graceful – and attention stealing – dance, a Fae man, taller than the others you’d seen so far, graced the courts prescence.
His hair was so white you might have thought that he was an old man, if not for his smooth skin untouched by aging. His eyes were deep pools of black that threatened to suck you in and never let you go, while his smile was kind and serene.
The Fae Lord came to a stop a few feet away from the thrones, and bowed his head. “Your Majestys, it is so wonderful to see you all again. I’m so pleased that I could finally make this trip like my father before me.”
“And we are pleased to have you, my Lord.” The King returned. “As it’s your first time staying here at the Palace, we’ve prepared a little celebration in honour of your new position…”
As the King droned on about how he hopes that this will be the new beginning of a fruitful alliance between humans and Fae, yada-ya, a chill went down your spine.
While the King’s announcement had been going in one ear and out the other, you brought yourself back into the room and carefully searched for the source of your discomfort… only to find the Fae Lord, looking directly at you.
You stood a little taller, returning his gaze in an attempt to be polite. When you gave him a polite inclination of the head, his smile widened as the King finished his speech.
“And so, we will have this little ball to welcome you and hope that your stay will be as comfortable as possible.”
“Yes,” the Fae Lord said, airily. “I’m sure it will be.” He turned to look back at the King and inclined his head once again. “I appreciate that the ball isn’t until tonight, and since this is your court, I’d like to ask if I can be a little forward, your Majesty?”
The King frowned, but nodded his head.
“You see, I couldn’t help but notice that lovely lady standing over there,” the Fae Lord pointed at you, “and was wondering if it would be too much for me to ask her for her first dance tonight?”
Your eyes widened.
The other ladies beside you, nudged you in the ribs. “So it was you he was looking at! I was wondering why his eyes were wandering, I thought he was just bored!”
Face burning, your eyes darted to the Queen and in the process, caught sight of the Orcs face.
His nose was scrunched up as he snarled, “awfully cocky, aren’t you?”
The Fae Lord ignored the Orc as he looked at you once again, hands behind his back.
When you looked at the Queen, she smiled at you and jerked her head to the Fae. “Well? You don’t have to ask me for permission, Lady (Y/N).”
All eyes on you, you bit your lip and sucked in a deep breath. Most of all, you could feel the Orc’s eyes baring into the side of your skull, like he was trying to make you face him, daring you to accept the Lord’s offer.
But the image you saw the previous night, flashed through your mind.
Spite leading you, you answered the Fae Lord. “I’ll have my first dance with you, my Lord.” You said, firmly.
The Fae bowed his head to you, “I look forward to it, my Lady.” And with that, he said his goodbyes to the King and Queen before the entire court was dismissed.
The rest of the day went by with a bubbly air, all the ladies sneaking glances and smiles at you as you went about your day.
You, yourself, could hardly believe that you had accepted the dance. It was true, you weren’t interested in romancing this Fae Lord in the slightest… but if it meant that you could piss off the King’s Guard, then you would gladly accept anything else that the Fae Lord had to offer.
After all, it’s not like the Orc could jump in and say that you couldn’t do something, people would get suspicious then.
As soon as the Queen had sent the ladies in waiting to go and prepare for the ball later in the afternoon, they all pounced on you.
“I can’t believe it!” One of them said as they took you by the wrist. “He really asked you, in front of the whole court!”
“It’s just a dance,” you told them all as you made your way back to your apartments. And that was all it would probably be, you told yourself. “It was just formality that I accept him. It would have been an awful start to his stay if I had told him no.”
“But even so, to ask you in front of the entire court!” Another one of the ladies squawked. “He must really like you.”
“We haven’t even formally met.” You said.
“Oh can’t you just be romantic for one minute?!” The first Lady huffed. “I’m imagining a star-crossed lovers romance, where he dramatically proposes to you just before he’s about to leave, flying through the corridors, abandoning his carriage in search of you-”
“Alright.” You said, firmly. “I get it. Well you can have your fantasies all you like.” Once you reached your apartments, you yanked open the door and slammed it shut behind you, locking the other ladies outside.
Sliding to the floor, you pulled your knees to your chest and squeezed. When you’d first started seeing the Orc, all you did was fantasize like that. Dream of running away with him and sharing all sorts of romantic ventures together.
But any kind of desire for that experience had left the moment you saw his wife.
You didn’t want to colour all men with the same brush, but a betrayal like the Orcs, isn’t something that you can just shake off.
And although it gave you the slightest bit of pleasure to know that the Orc was angry with the Fae, you knew you couldn’t allow yourself to get caught up in the romance of it all. He may be the exact same as the King’s Guard for all you knew.
And… you didn’t want to end up hurt again.
Once evening finally did come around and you joined with the other ladies in waiting – who were all too eager to have you be the leader of the group – the ballroom was full of chatter, people drinking and watching couples dance in the centre of the room.
“Oh, he’s not here yet?” Frowned a lady beside you, “don’t worry, he’ll turn up soon I’m sure, most of the other Fae are here. You should sit by the entrance that way, he’ll see you as soon as he enters.”
The suggestion made you want to roll your eyes. While you were going to dance with this Fae, you didn’t want to be seen as desperate for company. Taking a glass of wine from a passing waiter, you decided to hover to the side of the room.
As you sipped on the delicate glass, your eyes scanned the room where you spied the Queen dancing with the King, the other ladies mingling and chatting animatedly with other guests.
You caught yourself glancing at the entrance to the doors a lot. Keeping an eye out for the Fae Lord. You had to keep internally slapping yourself. This was just a means of getting back at the King’s guard.
And perhaps it was because the King’s guard was standing opposite the room, within perfect line of sight of keeping an eye on you that you were eager for the Fae Lord to arrive.
The Orc’s eyes glazed over the room, mostly following the King, but occasionally, he found you.
Anger boiled in your veins as you kept your eyes firmly fixed on the doors to the ballroom.
Even now, the Orc was good at keeping his affection for you a secret.
A part of you wanted to throw the wine glass in your hand at him, just to keep him on edge.
But, before you could put your thoughts into practice, gasps echoed around the room, drawing your attention to the ballroom doors.
The crowd parted as the Fae Lord’s eyes searched the room and found you. His eyes lit up at the sight of you and he passed through the crowd of people, and held a hand out to you. “There you are,” he said, smiling. “What are you doing hiding in the shadows over here? A pretty thing like you shouldn’t be hidden away like this.”
You shook your head as he took a wine glass from a waiter and sipped from it, “do you mind if I have a drink before we dance?”
“No, not at all my Lord.” You replied.
Over his shoulder, you chanced a glance at the Orc, whose eyes were now locked onto you and the Lord.
The Fae spoke, “I’m sorry I didn’t ask for your name first before asking for your dance, my Lady…?”
“(Y/N).” You answered smiling. “Thank you, for asking me for this dance.” You held your hand out to him, which he took and pressed a kiss onto your knuckles. A pleasant chill ran up your arm.
The Fae Lord bowed his head as he took another sip from his glass. “It’s an honour that you accepted. I should be thanking you for not humiliating me in front of all those courtiers.”
You chuckled at that. “I wouldn’t have done that to you, that would’ve been cruel, even if you were being very forward.”
“I just don’t have a care for all of these silly procedures,” the Fae said, waving his free hand around the ballroom. “There’s no point in any of it, I’d have preferred that the King and I just talk about what I’m here for and then to just leave, you know. But, a simple ball isn’t so bad.”
“So, you’d say you’re a simple man?” You asked.
“Completely.” The Fae finished his drink and you rushed to do the same too.
“My Lady, please, don’t do that on my account, we have the whole evening to dance, you can take your time.” He pulled the glass by the stem away from your lips.
You frowned, holding your free hand up to cover your mouth. “But I don’t want to keep you waiting, it would be rude of me to do that.”
With a sly wink, the Fae Lord said in a low whisper, “if I didn’t want to be kept waiting by you, I wouldn’t have asked for your first dance.”
You gave him a suspicious look, to which the Lord replied, “I want to get to know you, (Y/N).”
“Why?” You asked, shortly. “We’ve never even met before.”
The Fae Lord didn’t flinch at your tone. Instead, he searched your eyes. “Because, it seemed as though you were in need of some cheering up.” He said, simply. “And I don’t like seeing people upset.”
With a gentle smile, he patted your shoulder. “Don’t feel like you have to tell me what’s going on right now, after all, we did just meet each other. But whenever you’re ready, I’m here if you want to talk.”
You stared at him. Was he being serious? As you looked into his eyes you could sense no malice, no playfulness or manipulation in his face… Maybe, it wouldn’t be so bad to give this Fae a chance?
Once you’d finished your drink the pair of you took to the dance floor.
And for the next few days, he always made a point of talking to you. At first, it was mundane things, how did you sleep? Did you eat breakfast yet? Before it became more involved questions, like what your family did for business, asked about your other ladies in waiting and if they were doing well.
And gradually, you started to look forward to your little chats and began to ask about him and his life. It turned out he was an only child and took the Lordship after his father had died of some kind of tree associated illness.
He was funny, had a quick wit and was fond of lymerics. He liked the smell of morning dew on grass and the way the forest smelt after a rain storm. Oh, and he enjoyed rum cake.
Your stomach bubbled with excitement every morning now at the prospect of seeing him around the Palace and speaking to him in the evening, the Orc barely even crossed your mind anymore.
Except for when you were on your way to your apartments one time, and the Orc ambushed you from a dark corner of the halls.
“What is with you?” He snarled at you. “You’re completely ignoring me in favour of that pretty Fae man.”
You didn’t spare the Orc a glance and kept walking. “He’s nice to me.” You shrugged, “I can’t talk to other men?”
“It’s not just talking to other men!” The Orc hissed. “You’ve been ignoring me and the gifts I leave you, along with letters as well! Whenever I enter your rooms to give you something else, the other gift is always left unopened!”
He grabbed you by the wrist, forcing you to stop in your tracks. He tightened his grip, “did I do something wrong?” He asked you. “Tell me if I have, I will do what I have to do make up for it.”
Anger flared like a fire stoked with gunpowder. You wanted to yell at him, to shout at him that he should go back to his wife, confess that he was an adulterer and that he should be begging for her forgiveness.
But for some reason, you couldn’t let that anger escape. It refused to climb up and out of your throat. You shook your hand free of his grip. “You really want to fix it?” you hissed. “You can leave me alone. Pretend that this never happened. Take your hush gifts and give them to the person who really deserves them!”
And with that, you stormed off to your apartments.
Once you were inside the drawing room, you let out a groan of frustration. Of course, going off with the Fae Lord was definitely one way of getting revenge… but it didn’t feel like it was enough.
You still felt awful for the Orc lady, who was pregnant with that adulterers baby. There had to be something else you could do… some other way of getting back at him and really sticking it to the King’s guard.
And then, an idea came to you. It was a risk to ask, sure… but, the Fae Lord really seemed genuinely interested in you. And he did say himself that he would be open to listening to you if you had any problems. Who knows? Maybe he would be up for your revenge too.
So, that night you arranged a private dinner for the two of you, away from court to tell him what was really going on.
He was perplexed by your request to meet him in a place away from the public eye, but never the less accepted and arrived to dinner with that same pleasant smile he always gave you.
“What’s all this about?” He had asked as you finished setting the table.
You intertwined your fingers together and clasped them in front of you, as if you were about to start praying.
“… Do you remember when you told me that you could sense a sadness within me?” You asked. And over dinner, you told him everything. The secretive meetings, the presents. As you told your sombre tale, you realised how badly it all truly sounded.
Of course, the affair was awful enough on it’s own… but the fact that the Fae Lord had been unwittingly helping you in your payback, would come across as you using him.
And as you finished with the climax of your story, the Fae Lord’s fists clenched tighter around his cutlery. His jaw tightened.
You bit your lip, wanting to explain yourself. “I have to say that your asking me to dance in front of the whole court was what inspired me to continue on with this plan of revenge. I have truly enjoyed spending time with you and didn’t mean to use you my Lord…”
“You have nothing to be sorry for.” The Fae spat. “It’s an awful thing for him to do to you, it’s no wonder he was so against us dancing and being seen together in the first place. I had half a mind to complain to the King about his behaviour.”
He knocked the butt of his fork on the table as the Lord looked around your drawing room, like there would be some kind of explanation somewhere. “How dare he use someone like that to get his own rocks off!” The Fae Lord hissed. “And especially you. You should have told me sooner, this isn’t something that you should have to deal with alone!
“No, do you know what?” The Fae pointed at you, “don’t do anything else until I say so, alright? We’re going to get this bastard man-whore… or should it be Orc-whore?” He gave you smug smile as you laughed. “For this plan to work,” he continued, “I’ll need to ask permission from someone before I go through with it.”
You frowned. “Ask permission for what?”
The Fae Lord gave another sly grin, “It’s a surprise.” His smile faded as he reached out across the table with a free hand and took yours in his, “I’ve grown very fond of you, (Y/N) and I hope that you have of me too, so with that in mind, please trust me, okay?”
He was right, you had grown fond of him and his presence. It would be strange for him to not be around in court any more. Your heart sunk in your chest at the realisation that he wouldn’t be around for much longer.
You nodded. Lowering your head, you stared at your empty plate and sighed. “… I feel really silly for thinking that he could have actually liked me.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” The Fae Lord asked, frowning. “I like you.”
You sighed. “I mean honestly liked me. Not just used me as a means to have an affair… I thought that we would get married one day and…” You gripped your skirts.
For a moment, the Fae stayed silent. “You don’t deserve to be loved by trash like him.” He said, firmly. He gave another squeeze of your hand. “And we’ll make sure he knows it. So don’t put yourself down, alright? It’s not you who’s in the wrong, it’s him.”
And once again, he was right. You sniffed. It made you feel a lot better to hear someone say it out loud, and to talk to someone about this affair. It was like a huge weight had been lifted off your chest.
Weeks went by and everything continued on as it had been before. The Fae Lord acted no differently than before your dinner together and the King’s guard grew more and more furious each time he saw you and the Fae together.
He had stopped bothering you since you’d told him to leave you alone… but there was still that foreboding feeling that the Orc was still looking for ways to win back your approval, proved by his scathing looks of the Fae Lord when you and he were together.
And with that feeling hovering in the air at court, you began to realise how stupid you must have been, to believe that you were only worthy of such a deceitful kind of love. You deserved so much more, wanted so much more.
The strangest part about knowing that, was that you felt it might come true very soon. You didn’t know how you could tell, you just knew it.
You began to worry as the final days of the Fae Lord’s stay drew near. There still had been no update on the Lord’s revenge plan and when you asked him about it, he’d always reassured you and given your hands a reassuring squeeze. “I’m just making the final preparations, alright? Don’t worry about a thing, I’ve got this.”
It was all too soon that the final week of his stay around. Everyone in the Palace was suddenly mournful that the Fae Lord and his company would be departing.
The Monday of the week the Lord was going to leave, you awoke to find a gift box. It was carved of wood, the bark of the tree still on it’s exterior and top, with a mossy bow tying it shut.
And as you opened it up, you couldn’t help but gasp at the sight you saw. In a bed of moss, was a necklace made of spider web, droplets of water beads strewn around it delicately. Underneath it, was a note:
I would like to give you a surprise gift every day leading up to the final day before I leave. I hope that if you appreciate this gift, you’ll wear it today and the others that are to come.
Others to come? Was this part of the revenge plan that the Lord had cooked up?
Without a second thought, you put on the gift and when you entered the Queen’s apartments that morning, all the of other ladies practically screamed with excitement for you.
Even the Queen – who never normally allowed herself to be emotional – got involved with her ladies delighted chattering.
The next morning, it was a bracelet made of hardened tree sap – the note detailed that if you licked it, it would make for a good snack – the morning after that, a broach made of butterfly wings.
And every day you wore them, eventually looking more and more like a forest Fae than a human noblewoman.
When the day finally came of the Fae Lord’s departure, you found that there was no gift that morning. Although strange, it didn’t surprise you.
He was leaving today after all, perhaps he just didn’t have time to leave one final gift.
With a heavy heart, you made your bed, adorned yourself with all the gifts you had received that week, and set off to go to court to wish the Fae Lord a good journey home.
Following the Queen to the throne room, the rest of the ladies in waiting seemed to be uncharacteristically quiet. When you gave them strange looks, they all pursed their lips or looked away from you, as if they were trying to hide something from you.
Even the Queen refused to look at you. Although you were sure that you caught a small smile on her lips whenever you all turned a corner.
When you entered the throne room, it was packed with courtiers, all chattering as usual. But there was something different in the air. You weren’t sure what it was, but there was certainly something going on without your knowing.
Once you had taken your place beside the Queen, the doors to the throne room opened and in stepped the Fae Lord with his company.
You had hoped that he would make time for a private goodbye, or at least tell you how his plans for revenge had been progressing.
The whole time you had seen him in court or in other places in the Palace, it seemed as though he was doing nothing to try and help you with your revenge plan.
A part of you wanted to be angry with him for being so slacked about it.
But you couldn’t bring yourself to be. At the end of the day, you’d been able to get back at the Orc in some way; throughout the whole week of you wearing the gifts that the Fae Lord had been giving you, the King’s guard said nothing to you, apart from giving you foul glares from across the room whenever he saw you.
“Your Majesty's, I must thank you for your hospitality these past weeks, it has been nothing but delightful.” The Fae Lord announced.
As soon as the sentence had left his lips, the whole court went silent, hanging onto his every word.
“But, if you do not mind, your Majesty,” he looked at the Queen, “I would like to steal one of your ladies in waiting.”
You furrowed your eyebrows at him as the Queen smiled at him. “But of course, it’s been difficult to ignore that you certainly have a favourite among my girls.” She looked at you and tilted her head. “Go on, (Y/N).”
Your head darted between the two. Again, you caught the Orcs eye, who gave you a warning look of carefully concealed fury.
At that, you straightened your back and headed over to the Fae Lord. Once you had come before him, he held his hand out to you.
You took it. Sandwiching your hand between his, he looked you in the eye. “I know we’ve only known each other for a few weeks,” he said, “but they’ve been some of the best weeks of my life. You’re funny and smart,” he lowered his voice. “Vengeful.”
Rolling your eyes with a smile, he continued, “but most of all, you make me happy. So, I ask that you come back to the forest with me and be my wife?”
Your jaw dropped and you clasped your hands to your mouth. “You… you can’t be serious…”
The Fae Lord let an abashed smile come over him. “I am… so, if you’ll have me as a husband…” He pulled a ring, made of wood from his pocket, a white, misted crystal adorned the top of the ring. “This is the final gift… I’m sorry that there wasn’t one for you to wake up to this morning, but I felt you may appreciate it more if I gave it to you in front of everyone.” He gave you a knowing look.
You allowed a devious grin to broaden your lips.
An aww escaped the crowd, followed by a few claps. But before you could give your reply, a shout rang out.
“No!” You and the Fae Lord whipped around to find the King’s guard, abandoning his post. “No, this is completely inappropriate!”
The Fae Lord pushed you behind him, as the Orc towered over the pair of you. He jabbed a thick green finger at the Fae, “what makes you think you can just wander in here and take one of the ladies in waiting?!”
“Actually,” the Fae returned, plainly. “Her father gave me permission. I asked him last night before coming here… Unlike some people here, I’m actually upfront with future family.”
Your eyes widened as the court gasped and muttering began to rise from the onlookers.
You gripped the Fae’s arm and squeezed it. “No, please don’t. You’ve done enough.”
He looked at you, then back at the Orc. “Well, it’s all down to (Y/N)s decision anyway.” The Fae Lord raised an eyebrow and smirked. “After all, it’s not like you have any interest in her, is it?”
The King’s guard scowled at the Fae. But he said nothing.
“Come back here, now!” The King snapped from his throne. “Don’t ruin this moment for the Lady (Y/N) any more than you have!”
“But you can’t possibly allow this!” The Orc turned to face the Monarchs.
“I just did.” The King glared at his guard. He looked at you with kind eyes as he went on, “well, what is your answer?”
Looking directly at the Orc, you took the ring from the Fae Lord and slid the ring on your finger as slowly as possible.
The Fae Lord grinned and pulled you into a tight hug as the court let out an applause.
Wishing the court goodbye, you and the Fae Lord turned and left, without even giving a second glance to the Orc, who was left in the centre of the room, stunned.
“Now this, was a great revenge plan.” You whispered as the pair of you walked down the corridors.
You bit your lip, “I… I was worried that this was just going to be some kind of holiday fling for you.”
The Fae Lord stopped in his tracks, taking your hand. “My darling, I could never, do that to you.”

Heyyyyy how are ya 😼 I have an idea for angst (Although this has already been done by many authors but I'm curious see how you approach this kind of like concept)
"Neglected... Batsis.... Reader..."
(this is totally not me just manifesting for more neglected batsia content)
-🌭
Hotdog. Dog that's hot. Oblong tube of meat that sits on a bun. As long as you're okay with it not being Yandere, I'll give almost anything a shot.
Lonely in a Crowded Room
Platonic!Batfamily x Daughter!Reader
Content warnings: emotional neglect, isolation, hyper-independence as a coping mechanism
Masterlist is Here!
Your family loves you.
Your family does not have time for you.
Both of these things are true at the same time.
Your mother had abandoned you at the gates of the Wayne manor when you were an infant, leaving nothing but a note telling Bruce your name, her name, and that you were his biological daughter. After taking another DNA test for himself to be sure, Bruce accepted his role as your father and took you in.
Sometimes you wonder how different your life would be if he'd just admitted he didn't have the time to raise you and left you at an orphanage, where another couple looking to care for a child could devote their energy to you instead. You wonder if you'd be better off than you are now.
The thing is, nothing is really wrong. You're clothed, fed, sheltered, and if there's an emergency you are swiftly taken care of. You just don't have any kind of connection to your family.
Bruce gave it his best effort when you were a baby, when you needed more attention. Batman patrolled less often in the night whenever you had a bad time staying asleep. He bottle fed you, he read you bedtime stories, and he would bring you to Wayne Tower with him sometimes and keep you busy with toys while he worked. As you grew older, however, and started developing a sense of independence, that easy attention got harder and harder to get. Suddenly he was needed for a case, or there was an event Bruce Wayne needed to make an appearance at, or one of your brothers needed his insight during investigations of their own.
And, well, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of one. You learned to share his attention, choosing to be the polite daughter that could learn to fix her own problems, and eventually that meant to Bruce that you didn't need attention at all. You couldn't ever find the courage to correct him, to ask him to make space for you. So, still seeking emotional fulfillment, you tried to turn to your brothers instead.
Dick was unfailingly kind. He'd even remarked once that he always wanted a little sister, which was nice. But he was an adult by the time you entered the picture. He had his own life outside of the Manor, living in Blüdhaven and patrolling as Nightwing and maintaining a day job for the BPD. His already limited free time was spent for himself, chasing downtime he often desperately needed, and you didn't want to make him give that up for you.
Jason didn't come around the Manor as a rule. He had bad blood with your dad, and while he didn't explicitly take it out on you, unfortunately you live with Bruce, and so he just wasn't around enough for you to form any solid attachment. Plus, he's clearly got his own stuff going on, and likely doesn't have the time nor will to get to know you. You haven't tried to reach out and neither has he, which is enough of an answer about how he feels in regards to having a little sister.
Tim was kind of like Bruce. He had far too many prior engagements and duties to fulfill, from acting as current CEO of both Wayne Enterprises and Drake Industries, to moonlighting as Red Robin, to attending college and working on his degree. He'd give you a sweet smile and gently ruffle your hair if he caught you in passing, but then he had to focus on the rest of his daily goings on. Trying to catch Tim to talk was like trying to hold water in a cracked cup. He just slips right by you.
And Damian... Damian did not particularly like you. At least, not at first. He came into the picture a couple years after you were dropped off at the Manor. You suspect he felt threatened about there being another blood-relative in the house, and made every attempt to communicate to you that he wasn't happy with your presence. But, as you grew older, when the topic of secret identities and their nighttime work came up, you surprised everyone by showing no interest in taking up the mantle. You did not want to be Robin, or a bat of any kind for that matter, and that seemed to really mellow your brother out. His perceived competition wasn't even competing, and his hostility was for naught.
Now, he doesn't really give you the time of day. It took a while for you to understand that it wasn't malicious anymore. You know now that he's ashamed of his prior actions and doesn't know how to make amends. You've tried to bridge that gap for him, make it easier by showing that you hold no ill will, but either his pride or his stubbornness refuse to take the olive branch you're practically dropping in his lap.
So, you can't get emotional fulfillment from your dad or any of your older brothers. If you can't go to them, maybe you can turn to Alfred. He was a patriarchal figure, always tending to one thing or another and looking after Bruce and his sons after patrol. He didn't patrol himself, so maybe he'd have the time to spend with you.
And he did! He sure did. It just...wasn't quite what you wanted. Alfred was a former British Intelligence operative, and raised Bruce under the complicated duality of both a guardian and a commanding officer. He obviously knew how to talk to you like a normal civilian, because that's what you are, but it was overly formal. He was holding you at arm's length because he didn't know how to relate to you. You were familiar strangers, at best, and you felt that's all you'd ever be despite your best efforts.
So. No one is cruel to you. They are kind, they smile, they ask you how you're doing and genuinely seem to care about the answer. That's not the problem.
You know your family loves you.
You know your family does not have time for you.
Both of these things are true.
You just wish you weren't so terribly lonely.

"One of me is cute but two though!"
2.4k, cw: breeding kink, smut, not proofread
a/n: based off Juno by Sabrina Carpenter hehe happy reading :)
Simon would go to the ends of the earth for his bird. You wanted to watch your favorite movie for the millionth time with him? Done. You were craving take out from that special spot across town in the middle of the night? He’s placing your order and grabbing his keys to go pick it up after a quick goodbye kiss. You wanted him to kill a little red-haired prick who got too close to you -grazed your arm- yesterday at 17:37 while in a crowded line when he went to the loo, with his bare hands? Fan-tastic. (He may be projecting a little)
But he was worried. He might not be the most perceptive man, but he wasn’t so thick headed he couldn’t see the signs.
The way you made googly eyes at every baby you passed by. Fuck sakes he had never seen so. many. babies.
Little things everywhere nowadays, though it might just be he’s now paying enough attention to notice. It definitely helped the unintentional search that your grip on his arm tightened every time you saw one. Your soft coos as you turned to him to say for a third time in a row that the babe was the “cutest thing you had ever seen”.
He loved you like he loved his gun after it got him out of a tough spot (he loved you more, but he's pretty poor at putting an example on it), but there was one thing he was wholly unsure he could give you. Being a father has never been something he was sure of, his own making his childhood a living hell assuring him that it wasn’t in his genes or anywhere in his future. He came to terms with that years ago and shoved the idea out of his mind entirely.
As you both sat down at a coffee shop while taking a break from your park walk, you just happened to get seated right next to another woman, a stroller in your direct view.
Fuckin’ great.
Biting your lip you take a peek at the chubbiest little thing in a deep sleep. Catching the gaze of the mother you smile. “She’s adorable” you chirped.
As the mother responded with a smile of her own, Simon felt a foot gently nudging his leg as gave him the prettiest eyes. Did you even try to hide it anymore? No, you really didn’t. Eyes filled with thinly veiled intentions, eyes that said “Look how cute! Jump across this table and give me one now,”
“Isn’t she cute Si?!”
He sighed and replied in his usual grumble, “course, ‘er little jumper is nice.” Tactics. Swiftly move out from the topic and do not let the missus see the little bows… on the jumper… he just pointed- for fucks sake you saw it.
After quite some time giggling with the mother over photos, because of course that had to be the natural progression of things, Simon observed in his characteristic shadow-like demeanor before the little one began to fuss in her sleep. The mother excused herself and the babe to nurse and it’s then you finally turn back to your silent companion with your usual beaming.
“ ‘avin fun there, yeah?” He laughed which came out more as a snort as you mockingly kicked him under the table.
“I am as a matter of fact!”
Pulling his hands into the air in surrender he looks you head on. “Okay, I get it.”
“The baby was just so- ugh! Did you see how chubby she was? Her little hair.. Gosh!” Stay on task. Do not get distracted by the target's beautiful smile or laugh. Someone had to be the voice of rationale after all.
“Like I said ‘er jumper was nice, luv.”
When the pout came to your lips, he considered it a success (you were hot either way) and chalked the whole thing as a minor bump in the road. Whatever this baby fever was would pass.
Nonetheless, he should’ve known his bird better than that. She wasn’t a quitter, that’s for damn sure. As you cooked up dinner in that cute apron and served it plated up so nicely it dawned on him just how… domestic this all was.
It was nice, he concluded. Calm.
You remained pensive and quiet for the most part during dinner, clearly desperate to say what you had been on your mind for weeks. He could see the way your mind's gears turned, wanting to blurt it out. Like an animal going feral at the bars of its cage. Except your the animal and your cage is the inherent trust you will not go awol and chuck your birth control pills into the trash while he’s not watching.
“Simon…”
Here it comes.
Simon grunted out his response while chewing on his food, looking up to meet your cautious gaze. Leaning across the table you gently lay your hand on his which held his fork, pushing it down.
“I’ve been thinking… a lot lately.” There you went with that look again. “Have you… ever thought of kids before? I- I know we’ve had this talk before… but-”
“C’mere.”
He outstretched his big arms and patted his lap. With quick acceptance you hurried over and let him pull you on top of him, one hand on the back of his chair and the other on your ass for support. The deep kneading of it was also for support of course.
“You know how I feel about them. ‘Is jus not somethin I think about, luvie.” He didn’t dare look away from your eyes. If he was about to take that gleam out of your eyes he at least owed it to you to watch.
You grabbed his face with a light touch and caressed the stubble which had begun to grow with a look beginning to resemble a spot of desperation. Pressing yourself further into his body, you couldn’t help your protests.
“Si.. I just- I want one so bad.” You began to slide your hand down the side of his neck, pressing forward to gently place a kiss. Leaning your forehead in the junction between his shoulder and neck you continued before he could respond.
“Don’t you? A little baby with us all the time.”
Someone had to be the voice of reason and Simon was going to have to put his foot down on this.
“You’re not thinkin straigh’, luv. It would be cute-” He was cut off in shock as he felt the slight rock of your hips as you cowered into his shoulder.
“Just imagine it! One of me is cute enough, but two!” The pace began to speed up as you blatantly started grinding against him. He let out a little huff. Voice of reason. Though his reason was nowhere to be found when he put his hand that was idly on the chair to your backside to encourage the movement.
You knew what came next, you had to sweeten the pot. You knew you were being mean, but you just had to! You were practically given no choice!
“Don’t you want that Si! Don’t you wanna make something together?” You all but pleaded. He looked straight past your head with a crumbling steely demeanor. Fuck.
You already began to tug at his shirt and with a final glare, Simon couldn’t help but look at his pretty bird. His pretty bird on top of the prize she coveted, heat passing between their bodies. Just one time. One time and then they could talk about this properly.
Simon gathered you up in his arms and stood while pressing an eager kiss to your lips. It was a soft and long thing as he brought you both to the bedroom you shared. He threw you down on the bed and stripped himself as you excitedly did the same.
Smiling up at him as if you won. You did not win. This was not a win, right? You were on your birth control either way, he would pull out as needed. What harm is there in fucking his own girl.
Pushing you on to your back he parted your legs to look what lay between them. There was the prize he was most proud of. Puffy cunt at the mercy of the cool air being pushed out by the vents. You were already beginning to shine.
“You were just waiting for it weren’t you? Knew I couldn’t leave you hanging, yeah?”
With a giggle you spread your thighs further and wiggled your hips teasingly. Simon dropped to his knees and pulled your body to the edge of the bed. Throwing each of your legs on either of his shoulders he spit into your cunt, taking two thick fingers and rubbing it in, catching on to your hole lightly as he played with the slick. He could see the way your stomach tightened as he circled your clit and he winded you up further when he firmly flicked it.
“Si” you whined.
“Wha’ is it?” He grinned as he lowered his head to press a kiss down. Devolving from a kiss, he grabbed onto one of your thighs with a strong grip and began to sloppily lick while you let out your breathy little moans, sensitive to the absolute tank holding you still as he ate straight from the source.
He licked and it just kept going. Dragging his tongue around your cunt, up to your puffy clit. He harshly sucked as he latched on to it drawing a cry from your vulnerable form. Tugging at his hair, he only looks up with his eyes, refusing to pull away his mouth.
Shaking your head with wide eyes you couldn’t help but push your fluffy little agenda.
“Si please. Please. Please, I need it! I’d never ask for anything else-” you moaned in surprise once again as he added a finger into your hole. Willing himself to pull away from you, Simon continued to fuck his finger into you as he spoke up, spittle and slick coating his mouth. He had to switch gears, use logic (and cum) to deter you.
“We’d never have time. All this?-” He added another finger into your clenching pussy “Gone. We’d be cleaning spit up instead.”
“We’d have a baby!” You exclaimed insistently.
You were practically off the edge, usually by now Simon had you fucked into your own little world. This incessant begging for a little one of your own is keeping you sharper than usual. He’d fix that.
“Please Simon” You pulled him up, the strain of his cock to be inside you encouraging him to follow your movements. He looked at you pretty tits, pretty like everything else on you. Taking a nipple between his fingers and rolling hard.
“These’d get all full.”
Fuck that backtracked his own point. His mind fighting back the onslaught of thoughts at the sight of your tits growing round and heavy because of something he could do. Would your body get all soft- NO.
Lining himself up and looking at that pleading expression, the only time he’d ever seen you so wanting of something you were willing to roll around with nothing else on your mind.
“Just one Si, just one with your eyes your nose your hair-” Your breath went short as he pushed himself in, giving shallow thrusts to feed into your aching cunt. Recomposing yourself you gripped on to his bicep, “Just do it, lock me down tonight.”
Simon couldn’t help the way he subconsciously began pushing your thighs up to give himself a deeper angle, your ankles dangling weightlessly above your head, knees to your chest. The groans which sounded through the room as his hips hammered into you in a desperate chase.
The two of you could do nothing but stare into each other's eyes, losing yourselves in each other while your cunt squeezes him like a vice. Determined to keep him there, body obstinately stuck on one thing.
Someone had to be the voice of reason. Someone had to object to a little one with his eyes and your personality. Someone had to be rational and not think about painting the nursery while you waddled about. Someone had to remain level-headed and not imagine the way your eyes would light up with unfettered joy.
You tossed your head back and he couldn’t help but grip your face in his hand, tugging it right back to him.
“With me luv, with me. Look at me.”
Someone had to be rational.
Nodding your head shakily you keep your eyes on the massive man pounding away at you, feeling the way your stomach bulges trying to accommodate all of him, your cunt coaxing him further into the sticky trap.
Your body begging for one thing, you looked like you needed it. Tongue lolling out of your mouth as you were fucked stupid, sweat collecting on your brow. You looked perfect. Your whining swallowed by his own mouth when he presses another kiss to your swollen lips, body enduring in hopes the fat cock ruthlessly disturbing its peace would grant it the big load it craved.
Someone had to be rational?
Maybe it was the way you sucked him in, the way he couldn’t stop thrusting into you, but it’s as if your body sent some message to the receptors in his mind. All that flashed before him images of happy and full and with his baby.
As if you could sense his thoughts, your own peak quickly overcame you white hot. The way you spasmed around him with a loud cry of pure ecstasy.
“Give it to me!” You somehow managed. His mind went blank as drunk off the pleasure as you were, the only thing he could do was thrust, unable to comprehend anything else.
A shame Simon couldn’t be rational when it came to his bird.
With the final slam of his hips, his release went into the deepest depths of you. His grip on your hips burning from how tight it was as he kept himself flush against you.
It took a few moments to come down from the high. Simon looked at your sweaty face, hazy from lack of energy. Maybe you did win this one, but he really didn't get all this effort (not that he was complaining) if you were still on birth control.
Birth control... which he hasn't had to remind you to take for quite some time...
Out of pure curiosity at his realization, he gently pushed the two of you further up the bed while staying connected. Opening the first drawer he manages to grab the box which contained your birth control pills. Upon further inspection, he notices it remains unopened and untouched. Shaking his head with a gruff laugh he peers down at you as you shiver from the rumble.
“Dirty girl”
You just smiled.

I think that Anri begs adult manager! reader to force Ego to eat an actual meal that isn’t those instant noodles
EW, VEGETABLES...?
Notes: I actually love this so much, anon lol
"Good morning, Anri-san. How may I help you today?"
You greeted your fellow female manager, figure hunched over the washing machine, scrubbing the white linen sheets from the many rooms around the facility, especially the one that legit had an oyster sauce spill, leaving a spot darkened.
Anri gave her a large smile, one that is familiar, at first before her, she reached some sort of 'Eureka' moment, and her smile turned into one of disappointment she did not think of it earlier along with a hint of mischief in it.
"Actually, can you help me with something, Y/n?"
"Oh, of course! What do I do?"
The redhaired manager motioned for her to come closer, to which she followed. Cupping her hand around your ear, Anri whispered the 'task' she wanted you to do.
As she spoke, the wider your eyes became. How will you even pull this off?
"But, Anri-san..! You know how much he loves his noodles...and how he doesn't really like me."
You always thought that Ego Jinpachi, the head and director of the Blue Lock facility, never seemed to like you. He wasn't rude to you (you think because he talked to you the way he did to everyone else), but you can definitely see that he would go out of his way to avoid talking to you, approaching you or anything related to talking with you alone without Anri, unless it was something prefessional and work-related.
He also always scolds you. You know, it was just because of the betterment of the project. But why did he have to scold you for just being around Noel Noa or any of the master strikers? They were the ones handling the improvement of the boys. Of course, you need to be around them! Well, it was one of the many things you noticed, but you digressed. After all, you know you cannot please everyone, especially in a workplace environment.
So, you were a little shocked when Anri tilted her head at you, confused about your claim.
"Ego-san...doesn't like you?"
"Um, isn't it obvious, Anri-san? He doesn't really like talking to me at all, and when you aren't there with us, he will always avoid talking to me even if I try to make casual conversations! Also, he always scolds me for the stupidest reasons! Why does he get mad when I talk to Noa-san, Snuffy-san, Prince-san, or even Lavinho-san, I will never understand! It's my job to make sure that the boys are doing well and I can only make sure of that through the master strikers!"
You did not know when you started ranting, but you did. Anri, who listened to you with open ears, could not help but chuckle on the inside. She felt quite amused and also disappointed at Ego. But, she cannot say she was not surprised. Ego was one, if not the most emotionally constipated person she had ever met. It was not a surprise that he would try to avoid you.
But, why did he have to do all those things? It wasn't helping his cause at all!
'You better thank me for what I am doing, Ego-san.'
"Ego-san! Um..."
You stood there in the office where the said man was watching the many screens, watching over the progress of the players who were all training in their own ways. In your hands was a tray filled with sautéed vegetables, a bowl of rice, and some chicken in a bowl you cooked just for the man.
Even if you think he hates you, you can not just ignore someone who is literally putting their life in danger because they don't want to eat healthy things. You aren't messed up like that!
But, you did not know how to approach this, much less him. How will you even ask him to do this, much less with the strained relationship you two had? This was a really bad idea! Why did Anri have to approach you of all people for this-
"What is it?"
He turned his swivel chair to face you, his eyes a bit lidded to show that he was not that happy for being interrupted.
"I made some extra food, and uh...I thought you may want to have it."
'That's so stupid, Y/n!'
He raised an eyebrow at this, and it did not help that the look on his face showed that he did not approve of eating the pallate on the tray.
"Y/n-chan, you know I don't eat those things."
"I know...! I just didn't want to waste it. Anri-san said she already ate so..."
Ego did not say anything, turning his swivel chair to face the screens again. Just as you were about to give up and leave the room thinking that he would not accept the food at all, he raised his arm and pointed to an empty space on the desk.
"Put it there. Don't blame me if I don't eat it and it becomes rotten."
Blinking at his words, you just nodded your head, a bit dazed that he actually considered even being near the food. You did as he told before bowing and leaving to do your other chores and duties.
Needless to say, when Anri entered Ego's office, she was shocked to see the man munching on a bowl of rice with chicken and vegetables on top. His eyes were still focused on the screen, back hunched in a weird position, but he was indeed eating.
"Did Y/n pass by here..?"
"She did. Dropped this...abomination and her paperwork."
Ego answered, pointing to the food that he called 'abomination,' yet he was still eating the food, cheeks round with food. Anri nodded, yet it was obvious she did not believe the disgusted look in his face to which he only glared at her for.
"You're the one who said it. The facility should not waste food." He pointed his chopstick at her.
"Yeah, yeah. It's totally not because you favour her, definitely not." Anri shrugged, a cheeky smile as she headed out the room once she dropped the paperwork.
'I'm surrounded by simps, haahh...' She inwardly sighed.
ADDITIONAL TIME!
Anri: You like her.
Ego: No, I don't.
Also Ego: *proceeds to hoard every single thing Y/n gave him, yes, even if it was the inkless pen she passed to him to throw in the trash.*
I'm sorry if this was too short, hahaha. I didn't really know how to go deeper into this. But I hope you loved this!

Not in this life time|| Mafia!ex!Lando Norris x fem!reader
Summary—You had been looking over your shoulder since the day you left Lando. When you first met him, he was the sweetest man you’d ever known. He had a way of making you feel like the only woman in the world, the center of his universe. But the man you fell in love with wasn’t the man you came to fear. The sweetness had been a mask, hiding something far darker.
Word count — 2534
A/n this is a repost from my old blog that was requested by an anonymous person (I hope you are around) also no part twos!
You had been looking over your shoulder since the day you left your ex, Lando. When you first met him, he was the sweetest guy you’d ever dated. He made you feel special, like the only girl in the world, the only one for him. Oh, how right you were.
Your nails tapped against the glass of the counter in the pawnshop, drawing the attention of the shopkeeper. He was quick to notice which gun you were gesturing towards.
"Now, what would a young thing like yourself be doing with a gun like this?" he asked, pulling out the Taurus 380 ACP revolver. It was small enough to be easily concealed and go unnoticed.
“Call me paranoid and desperate,” you responded, unamused and ready to get out of the dingy pawn shop.
“That’s a dangerous combination. Who has got you this paranoid and desperate enough to buy a gun?” he asked, setting the revolver on the counter before grabbing a box of bullets.. The man’s eyes take in your appearance. You had dark purple bags under your eyes from not being able to sleep. He also noticed how you jumped at the smallest noises with wide eyes and how exhausted you sounded.
“Nobody I want to see again in this lifetime,” you replied.
“That’s understandable. I feel the same way about my ex-wife, she's a real piece of work suing me for everything I own” the man said, chuckling at his joke.
As you waited for him to finish bagging up the gun and the bullets, you felt a chill run down your spine. Maybe you were paranoid, but you couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. Every rustle and jingle of the bells on the shop’s front door had you jumping in your skin.
When the guy handed you the bag, he gave you a concerned look.
“Are you sure you’re alright? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
You tried to brush it off with a laugh and a quick “I’m fine,” but even you could hear the shakiness in your voice.
“You sure you don’t want me to walk you to your car?” the guy asked, obviously not believing you.
You hesitated for a moment. Maybe it wasn’t a bad idea. Maybe you were just being paranoid.
“Yeah… Yeah, that might not be a bad idea.”
The guy nodded in understanding, stepping out from behind the counter and walking towards the door.
“Let’s get you to your car. You seem on edge,” he said, holding the door open for you.
As you stepped out into the twilight, the shadows seemed to stretch and bend, making your skin crawl. You kept glancing around, trying to see if anyone was following you.
The guy hovered nearby, noticing your nervousness. “You’re shaking like a leaf,” he remarked. “You okay you look really pale like you're going to be sick any second now?”
You forced what you hoped was a believable smile. “Yeah… Fine. Just a little jumpy, that’s all.”
The guy raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying it, but he didn’t press the issue. He simply stood there, waiting for you to unlock your car. Eventually, you managed to get the key in the lock and opened the door. As you climbed into the driver’s seat, your heart was pounding so hard you could hear it pounding in your ears.
The guy gave you a small wave. “You sure you’re going to be alright on your own?” he asked, concern etched on his face. “Yeah, I’ll be careful. Thanks again,” you said, the words barely more than a whisper. As the guy walked back towards the pawn shop, you closed your door and sat there for a moment, trying to collect yourself.
Lando sat in his office, his expression dark and brooding. He was surrounded by the trappings of wealth - the expensive furniture, the art on the walls, the panoramic view of the city. But none of it brought him any joy. Not without you. He needed you. He wanted you.
The phone rang on his desk, interrupting his brooding. He picked it up, listening intently as the man spoke.
“She’s on her way home Boss”
“Good,” Lando replied as he hung up the phone, his mind already planning his next move. He stood up, straightening his tie and adjusting his jacket. He looked like the epitome of a wealthy businessman, but there was a dangerous glint in his eye.
He walked out of his office, giving his staff a quick order to hold his calls. He didn’t want anything interfering with his plans for you. Lando got into his car, the engine roaring to life as he pressed the gas pedal. He navigated through the city streets, his mind focused on one thing and one thing only - you.
He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, the anticipation building with every mile that brought him closer to you. He could almost taste victory. As Lando drove, his mind began to play out scenarios of what he would do when he saw you again. He could imagine the fear in your eyes, the shock on your face as he showed up unannounced. He could picture the way you would tremble in his presence, the way you would try to run, but he would never let you escape. Not this time. Not again he wouldn’t let that happen a second time.
He could feel his heart rate increasing as he got closer to your place. The thrill of the hunt was exhilarating. He knew you would try to fight him, screaming, punching, slapping and kicking you weren’t good at it. Fighting, but he also knew how to control you. He had done it before, he would do it again.
As he finally arrived outside your place, he parked his car and got out, his eyes scanning the area for any sign of you. He saw your car parked out front and a smile crept across his face. You were already home. He walked up to the front door, his footsteps silent and stealthy. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small lock pick, easily unlocking the door in seconds.
He stepped inside, shutting the door quietly behind him. He was inside your home, and you were his prey.
Lando looked around the place, noting the lack of security cameras and alarm system. He chuckled softly to himself. As if those things could keep him from what he wanted.
He took a deep breath, taking in the familiar scent of your perfume. It was intoxicating, bringing back memories that made his heart ache.
Lando could hear the shower running. A sly smile played at the corners of Lando's mouth. You were vulnerable, naked, and exposed in the shower. It would be so easy to take advantage of the situation.
He toyed with the idea of barging in and seizing you, but that would have been too predictable. Instead, he pivoted on his heel and retreated to the living room, taking a seat in the dimly lit corner. Nestled in the chair, Lando blended into the shadows, becoming virtually invisible. This was more fun. He bided his time with the patience of a predator on the prowl. He could still hear the shower running, and the knowledge that you were just on the other side of that door, naked and defenseless, made his pulse quicken. He sat there, patient and still, waiting for you to come out.
He knew it was only a matter of time before you finished your shower and emerged from the bedroom. The anticipation was a delicious torment, each passing moment bringing him closer to what he desired most.
Once dressed you walked out of your bedroom to get some food. The revolver fits easily into the pocket of your sweatpants. It brought some comfort to ease your mind but it wasn’t enough. Every creak of the floorboards made you jumpy, every time you heard one of your neighbors slam the car door it made your anxiety skyrocket. It wasn’t fair that you had to live in fear every day for months because of him. Because of Lando. The thought of him showing up back in your life had you very cautious about every phone call, text and knock at your door. You didn’t go out anymore with friends or family you couldn’t not with the thought that one of Lando’s lackeys might see and tell him where you were. Deep down inside you knew he had someone watching you; it was naive to think otherwise.
As you walked into the kitchen, Lando's eyes followed you, his gaze like a hawk watching its prey. He could see the faint outline of the revolver in your pocket,it wasn’t that hard to not notice it after all he was trained to notice these things since he was a kid. The revolver had a little weight not much but enough to cause your sweatpants to sag on one side and it made him smile. You were trying to protect yourself, but it was useless against him.
He watched you move around the kitchen, his eyes tracing every curve and contour of your body. He knew every inch of you like the back of his hand. Lando was tired and growing very impatient. How can someone be so paranoid and so unaware of their surroundings?
Lando, who was sitting in the shadows, grew tired of watching and waiting leaning over as he pulled on the chain of the lamp, light to reveal him from the darkness. His intense gaze was upon you. His expression sent a shiver of fear down your spine, freezing you in place at the sound of the lamp clicking on. you couldn’t move or run away even if you wanted to not with this paralyzing fear that hit you.
"Hello, sweetheart, did You think this is over?” he drawled, his voice dripping with mockery.
His gaze traveled over your body, taking in every detail you were wearing white socks with gray sweatpants and a plain t-shirt. Your hair was still wet and looked like you were going to cry any second now and you couldn’t stop shaking with fear. He smiled and pointed to the revolver in your pocket "Trying to protect yourself, are you?" He asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "How cute although it won’t help you.”
He stood up slowly, his movements graceful and catlike. He walked towards you, closing the distance between you with each step.
"That little toy won't save you, you know," he said, nodding towards the revolver in your pocket. "You're still mine. You'll always be mine."
He was now standing directly in front of you, his body mere inches away from yours. He reached out and stroked your cheek, his fingers tracing the curve of your jaw, his touch possessive and intimate.
“What are you doing here?” You asked, visibly shaking your hand slowly inching closer inside your pocket all you needed was an opening. Lando chuckled softly, his eyes flickering with amusement. "What do you think I'm doing here, my love? I came to remind you who you belong to." He leaned in closer, his breath hot against your ear. "You can try to run, you can try to hide, but I'll always find you. You're mine, and I'm never letting you go."
He wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him. His body was pressed against yours, his touch possessive and unyielding.
“You won’t be needing this,” Lando says, snatching the revolver out of your pocket and placing it on the table. Your heart sank when he took away the only thing that seemed to ease your mind.
"Do you remember what we used to be like, sweetheart?" He whispered, his lips brushing against your skin. "We were so good together. So perfect. I don't understand why you thought you could leave me."
“Because you’re psychotic Lando now let go of me,” you said trying to push him away from you. Lando's grip on you tightened, his expression hardening as you tried to push him away. "Tsk tsk tsk," he scolded, his voice filled with false sweetness. "Is that any way to speak to your lover?"
"You forget, my beautiful, I'm the one in control here. You don't get to tell me what to do, you don’t get to make orders around here like I do." He tilted your chin up, forcing you to look into his eyes. "You belong to me, darling," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "Whether you like it or not, you're mine. And I won't let you leave me again."
He paused for a moment, his gaze running over your face. "You thought you could get away from me, didn't you? That you could start a new life, pretend like I never existed. How foolish." He tightened his grip on your chin, his fingers digging into your skin. He chuckled softly, his lips curving into a mocking smile. "But I know you better than anyone. I know your every weakness, your every fear. I know how to make you shiver. I know how to make your heart race."
His fingers trailed down your neck, tracing the pulse point at your throat. "Your heart is beating so fast right now," he whispered. "I can feel it. You're scared of me, aren't you?"
"Good. You should be scared of me. You should be terrified of what I’m capable of. I'm not going to let you go. I'll do whatever it takes to keep you with me."
His eyes darkened with possessive anger. "You're mine," he repeated, his voice dropping down to a growl. "You're mine to protect, mine to love, mine to control. No one else is ever going to have you. Do you understand me?"
He released your chin, his fingers moving to your hair, tangling in the strands and pulling tight. He pulled your head back, forcing your face up towards him. "Answer me," he demanded, his face mere inches from yours. Your heart was pounding in your chest, your head spinning with terror. His grip on your hair was painful, but you didn’t dare try to resist him. You knew what he was capable of. "Yes," you whispered, your voice barely above a whisper. "I understand."
A satisfied smile spread across Lando’s face as he heard you speak. "Good," he purred, his grip on your hair loosening slightly. "I knew you would see reason eventually, sweetheart. You’re smarter than you look."
He leaned in closer, his lips brushing against your ear. "But let me make one thing clear," he said, his voice dripping with menace. "If you ever try to leave me again, I won’t be so forgiving next time. You’ll regret it for the rest of your miserable life. Do I make myself clear?"
“Yes Lando, you made yourself clear I understand”
Lando smirked, clearly pleased with your response. "Good girl," he crooned, his voice dropping to a seductive murmur. "That’s what I wanted to hear."

Was talking with wife recently about AI and the ways it's incredibly stupid and I am reminded of the time a few years ago the Execs at the place I worked previously wanted to incorporate AI into our workflow in order to help materials development. They wanted to make sure that the company was "utilizing the latest technology to make us more productive" so they partnered with a company that uses AI/ML to predict chemical structures in order to enhance performance based on our desired properties. My boss and I kinda thought this was stupid when it was first announced, but we were still unprepared for how bad it was really going to be.
The problem of course here is that what a computer thinks is good and will perform well does not often make sense according to the laws of physics. So more often than not the computer would spit out extremely specific and nonsensical structures that it believed would increase performance. These structures could range from completely impractical to sometimes downright impossible to actually make, so for every set of predictions we got back we had to first filter all the nonsense and then select a set from the ones that could be made and tested in a reasonable amount of time. In addition, they emphasized that the more data that they have the better the predictions would be, so the pressure was on to synthesize and validate as many molecules as possible as quickly as possible. This was a huge drain on time and energy because again some of these structures were nontrivial to make. Not that the computer people would be able to tell the difference. But still the executives were excited about it so we gave it a try anyway. The idea was that we would start by making a bunch of different materials and test the results and then feed those results back into the machine to predict better structures based on the ever growing data pool.
The funny part of the story, of course, is that with every iteration, the performance got worse. This was not surprising to me. The mechanisms that dictate performance in this field are not fully understood even now, and there are still many papers coming out every year adding more knowledge to the field. Additionally, the predictions weren't being made using some fundamental understanding of the mechanisms at play, but by training an algorithm using a pool of existing literature. You're just not going to get good results by "midjourneying" chemistry. We did around 3-4 iteration cycles with them over that year contract and every time the performance of the structures that it had predicted were worse than the last set, sometimes dramatically so. And they would tell us "no no, the data set isn't really big enough to give good results yet" and "once the model has tested enough structures it'll get better" but it didn't in that period. And it's possible that on a long enough timescale it might be possible? But, the reality was that we had a whole year of time and resources essentially wasted because our CEO thought that some tech guys in SV could use AI to do chemistry and didn't believe us when we said it was stupid.
And you know what? We figured out something that worked really well less than six months after dumping them and getting to do it our way again.

Hetty wanted to go to the funeral home in her Jag. Roof off. At a foot-and-a-half taller than Hetty sitting in the passenger seat, Nate figured he’d be hitting a stop sign or a mailbox as she took “a shortcut” across someone’s lawn. Or a traffic circle. Or three parking lots in a row.
She was not in her right mind when she drove. He knew that as mental health professional and more importantly as an occasional passenger.
Nate figured they’d take the 1993 Mercedes 400E from the motor pool. He’d fit in fairly easily and while the car had a boxy look compared to more recent Mercedes, it wouldn’t attract much attention on the road.
No, instead, Hetty took him and Felix the fox in a two-tone 1978 Cadillac Eldorado. The car body was beige, the engine hood and roof a chocolate brown. It had whitewalls, an immaculate interior – the car was well loved – and sort of worked, color-wise with Felix.
Since it was a two-door, he easily fit in the front passenger seat. Hetty pulled out a thick briefcase with a pillow and sat on it as she drove.
Her performance at the funeral home was hilarious. Seeing them in a mirror as they walked out, playing the son of a woman wasn’t even five-feet tall provided enough of a distraction physically for the funeral director to look too deeply into their story.
Whatever he thought of her methods and leadership choices, Nate would always be impressed by her operational skill.
On the ride back to the office, he became interested in Felix. “I never saw you as someone with furs or … Felix.”
“I have my mother’s sable coat. My father was not a physical gifts man for most things. His idea of an anniversary gift to my mother was two weeks in Japan or a birthday jaunt to Bermuda,” Hetty said. “When he wasn’t feeling well one year, he gave her the coat instead. She was bothered, thinking he was having an affair. He had lung cancer instead.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. He went in for a then experimental treatment and survived. When he felt well enough a year later, they took a trip on the Orient Express.”
“Have you ever worn the sable?”
“Yes. Incredibly warm coat. Good for Moscow, not for here.”
“Where did you get Felix?”
“Ah,” she said with a smile. “Years and years ago, I was the make-up artist and costumer of choice by a certain movie producer. He made hit movies and dabbled in television. It was good work where I traveled regularly.”
“He took a shine to you.”
“Oh no, I was not his type. Or what he thought was his type. Tall, blonde, elegant women – his first three wives could all have been Hitchcock leads.”
“Three wives?”
“Actually had four. Alejandra was wife number four. She was a set nurse and did not give a single damn about my friend’s status on the film. She didn’t give a single damn about him. She was average height, dark hair, dark eyes and saving up for medical school by working at a hospital at night and on movie sets during the day. Alejandra was likely the first woman who didn’t swoon near him in 30-years. He worked hard to win her over and while he was more than twice her age, they were perfectly happy.”
“Where does Felix get into this?”
“Felix belonged to Alejandra. Unlike my father, my friend lavished gifts on Alejandra. She never asked for a single thing - they had each other and that was plenty. She made him get rid of his cook because she would cook for him. She loved him for who he was not what he did. She was the woman he always needed.”
“This doesn’t sound like it has a happy ending.”
“Alejandra got sick. Her experimental cancer treatment didn’t work and after 15-years of marriage, more than his first three marriages combined, Alejandra passed away.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Such a tragedy. My friend had me over a few weeks after her death. He wanted her clothes and jewelry packed up. He was giving the clothes to high-end thrift shops and donating the money in Alejandra’s name to cancer charities. Sold the jewelry except her wedding ring and started a nursing scholarship at USC.”
“Turning tragedy into something good.”
“Nothing good about Alejandra’s death. As I was helping him go through everything, he gave me Felix. Said Alejandra loved it, it was her favorite gift. She would want someone she knew to have him. I’ve used him on several cases. Always makes me think about Alejandra and the fragility of happiness.”
“Maybe think about the joy of finding happiness. They didn’t have a long time together but sounds like a loving time together.”
“True,” Hetty said. Turning to him, she commented, “You may have future in psychology.” She pulled the car into the motor pool.
As he got out, and as he always thought when she told him a story, Nate wondered how much or if any of her stories were true. The movie producer with four wives would be a good place to start investigating. (the 1978 two-tone Cadillac Eldorado)

─── ・ 。゚☆ TWIRLING WARMTH -> sae itoshi !!!
ᶻ 𝗓 𐰁 .ᐟ dancing with my phone by HYBS
synopsis; in which sae decides to unwind by using a tip you gave him cw: fluffy/crack fic , ldr , sae misses you , dancing , very ooc oh my god let me believe sae is secretly a massive lovefool , sae has a facetime auto answer feature (does that exist) , use of amor , gn! , unproofread + lowercase
"dancing, i'm all alone . figuring out how i can get you home"
living in his apartment without you was easy.
or so he thought.
he was currently sprawled across his bed, his arm stretched out automatically to make space for your warmth; which was unfortunately located a thousand miles away from madrid at this moment.
sae groaned, snatching his hand back immediately when he snapped out of his trance. how pathetic, he thought. he can't be caught wishing for cuddles like some lovesick fool, he should exercise more self-control than that!
naturally, he reached out for his phone to text you, like a normal person who doesn't yearn for his long-distance girlfriend would do:
[i miss you, amor.] 7:08 pm
[coming home soon, can't wait to see you.] 7:30 pm
yes, he really had impulsively booked a flight just to see you. yes, he was still definitely nonchalant. god, what have you turned him into?
it's only been an hour, but you still hadn't replied. he had to fight another dejected groan that threatened to erupt from his throat. but whatever. it was late in your place anyway, you were probably sleeping.
however, the fact that you would soon wake up to find his little suprise, calling him almost immediately, sent a little comfort to his sore bones. he really wanted to hear your voice.
ugh, seriously. what was in the air today?
frustrated, he exited the chat box and scrolled through his playlists. he reached a certain one that you and he made the last time he was with you.
he decided to listen to the music in there instead, that always relaxed him.
─── ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ ───
"sae, when are you coming home?"
your pretty voice came out warped from the speaker. he scoffed silently, the phone could never catch your beauty properly.
"sae."
"huh, what?" "i said, when are you coming home?"
"never. don't want to." "not even for me?" "especially not for you."
"ouch, sae."
he chuckled softly under his breath, the sun filtering through his room and in turn illuminating his eyes. you had ample time to observe his face which, thankfully, wasn't pixelated.
"you okay?"
"of course. why wouldn't i be?" you rolled your eyes. well, duh, he'd deny everything. your boyfriend was capable of many things. admitting he needed to cool off was not one of them apparently.
you hummed for a moment, thinking off into space as you watched sae rummage around for a blanket. then it clicked.
a sneaky grin spread across your face, oh yeah, he'll like this idea.
you set down your phone on the table, adjusting the camera so it showed your full body. then you grabbed your laptop and started playing music. was that.....pitbull???? mr worldwide???
sae watched you with disbelief. this was rare. he was never caught speechless. he blinked slowly as his eyebrows creased ever so slightly.
"what are you doing?"
"im dancing, sae. you should join me, it'll help you relax, you know?"
he saw you swaying side to side, twirling, bobbing around your head to the beat of the song, all with the biggest and goofiest smirk on your face. he scoffed, shaking his head at your antics. there was no way he was going to dance. ever.
"you look stupid. i'm ending the call right now."
"wait, no!"
─── ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ ───
a smile tugged on the corner of his mouth as he recalled that memory. he wasn't much of a sentimental person, but he can make exceptions sometimes.
he just....stared at the phone for a few moments, gaping at the turning disc on the screen as he hummed absent-mindedly.
fine. he'll try dancing once. he'll see if it lived up to the hype.
he disconnected his headphones and raised the volume to max as he stood up from his bed. he scrolled through the playlist again, settling on his favorite. he felt awkward, so he tried to tap his foot to the beat.
hey, this was actually really fun.
soon, small taps of his foot moved to infect his shoulders. pretty much once the song ended, he was full on dancing. just as you had shown him to do. even that stupid twirl-hand wave (?) thing you did. he couldn't even explain it, but it was entertaining to do. he'll never tell you that you were right.
but unfortunately for him, you saw him already. he had left his laptop open, whose camera was perfectly facing straight ahead on his being.
you never wanted this to stop. you were having a blast. finally seeing your boyfriend have fun in what......months now? what a blessing. and so you remained silent, captivated by the incredibly awkward but endearing dance moves. stifling your laughs took so much of your restraint though.
sae should really turn off the auto-answer feature.
"dancing with my phone, thinking about you"

Trouble
Yuta x reader 18+
forbidden romance, enemy’s to lovers
You are now an instructor at Jujutsu tech because of your protective older brother Megumi. He’s seen your bad luck with romance so he sets one rule in place. "No dating sorcerers, especially the ones who are heads of clans." Sounded easy enough until one comes into your class. Yuta Okkotsu.
Part one
"Welcome back baby sister." Megumi says as he placed his hand over you head.
You smile at him seeing how he welcomed you warmly. Last time you saw him he was cold and ignored you. Too embarrassed to tell everyone that you guys were related. Which wasn’t that hard to tell because you two had many similar features. Same colored hair and the exact same eyes.
You’ve heard people joke about you being the girl version of him but nicer and more extroverted.
Handing your bags to him you go inside the property and go a 360 of the place. It was so nice compared to where Gojo decided to ship you off too.
"I see he had favorites." You roll my eyes.
Megumi didn’t say anything but lead . During your walk you admired every little thing. It was amazing seeing that he was now the owner of this property. He was the head of the Zenin clan after all.
"Stop exaggerating and listen up. You’ll be teaching a new curriculum in this school so you’ll be granted one of the new buildings. It has a built in studio with locker rooms and showers.
"Really?! That’s so exciting!! I can’t wait to meet everyone!" You say.
He nods with a soft smile and walks you to the front of a house. It was exactly four building way from his main estate. The pros of having a older brother that’s the head of a clan. A home that you didn’t have to pay rent for! You could just hug him right now but you knew your limits.
He set your luggage down inside and gave you a tour of the place. It was so huge for it to be only for you. A while family could live here. This was way too much, you weren’t expecting him to give you this.
"Before you settle in I want to talk to you about something." He says as you sit in the bed.
You let out a groan knowing exactly were this conversation was going. He’s been looking over you ever since he was informed about your situation in America.
You were dating sorcerers over in the states and well things would always end terribly for you. You’d call him drunk and crying over a breakup. Especially the last one. He was a very strong person and was very popular. You two hit it off when you met and even went as far as to get an apartment together. It was going great! You guys even spoke about getting married and having kids! That was until you came home late one day from your Yoga class to find him in bed with three women. You ended things with him but he kicked you out of the place and kept all your things.
That’s when Megumi told you to come back home. Which you did, kind of… you moved very far from him so he wouldn’t butt in your life but he was very overprotective. He’d want to know how the guy you were talking to was, there profession, family and if they were a sorcerer. Eventually another break up happened and he demanded you to come live here with him and he’d get you a job. Which he thankfully did.
Though now you had to live with an overprotective brother.
"No dating sorcerers, especially the ones that are head of clans. They’re nothing but trouble" he crosses his arms.
"Obviously!! Iv learned my lesson! No more sorcerers!" You smile at him.
He furrowed his brows not believing anything that just came out your mouth. He didn’t bother to say anything after. He simply just left you to settle in.
You woke up early in the morning the next day. You had class to teach and the higher ups thought it would be a great idea to having it be the students first class. They said that it would help them wake up and be alert for the other classes.
You had a hard time getting up but managed due to the thought of your brother scolding you for being late on the first day of the job.
At school you set your gym bag down and started cleaning the place a bit. It was still dusty since they finished constructing it a few days ago. So you found your self brooming up the place before your students got here. It didn’t take long for them to start coming in. Clearly they had just woken up and grabbed themselves to class by the look they were wearing.
"Welcome!" You cheerfully say as everyone sat on the mats.
It seemed like everyone was here now so you could officially start class.
You started off my introducing yourself and what this class was all about. The importance of stretching and flexibility. Not only was it important for combat but also for your health.
Instructing them to change into work out gear you decide to eat a snack while you waited. Taking a mandarin out of your lunch bag you begin to peal it carefully. To not make a mess you start in a spiral form so it could come off in one piece.
"Good morning"
You look up to see someone standing at the door. They stood leaning on the door frame but their whole body covered the entrance from his hight. It was a man with dark hair and dark blue eyes. He was one of the most good looking guys you’ve seen. He was totally your type! Just look at how buff he looked!
His gaze was on you as he observed you carefully.
"Good morning…" you say as you stare in awe.
It was okay to admire him right?
"My name is Yuta Okkotsu. I just wanted to stop by and check out this new class. I did invest a lot of money into it after all." He says.
He invested money into this class? You thought your older brother did this. Unless he called in some favors. That wasn’t really like him so you wondered how this happened.
"Welcome to my yoga class!" You say giving him a warm welcome. "I’m so glad you wanted to invest into these kids future. I heard so many higher ups and heads of family’s wanted to turn down this class." You say standing next to him.
Goodness how this man towered over you was crazy.
"I was one of them actually. I don’t see the importance of such a thing. They should get all of there stretches during training." He crossed his arms as his eyes wondered around the room. "I only ended up agreeing and funding because I owed Fushiguro a favor." He continued.
Wow every nice thing you thought about was now out the window. This dude was a total jerk! The audacity of him saying that infront of you!
"Actually it’s a quite important class that will help these students in battle and in health. It’s a skill everyone here should learn." You raise your brow.
Yuta looks at you with a tired expression.
"Right."
Your eye twitched as you looked at him. Your brother was right! These jujutsu sorcerers were jerks! No wonder he told you to stay away from them.
"Yes, actually I think I could take you down. Iv been doing yoga and pilates for years now. I don’t do hardcore training." You challenge him.
Knowing men he was going to bite the bait and that he did.
"I wouldn’t want to embarrass you. Your new and your students would loose respect for you." He laughs.
"Sounds like your scared Yuta." You grin.
He looked baffled by your comment for a second but quickly replaced it with a smile.
"Your on."
By the time he said that all the students were back. They looked at you wuddd eye seeing how you too bickered.
"Change of plans class. Today you’ll be observing what a normal fighter vs one that is also flexible." You smile at them.
The students ended up moving their mats all the way to the back so they wouldn’t get in your way. You could tell they were excited to see this go down. When do you see a teacher fighting someone important during class? At least you assume he was important during to him having a say about your class and then investing money into it.
Both of you take your place in your respective areas.
"Just a normal fight with no sorcery." You say.
He gives you a nod acknowledging the rules.
He starts by moving swiftly, his speed catching you off guard. He darts forward, attempting to land a quick jab aimed at your jaw, testing your reflexes.
You blocked him and swings fist to his abdomen
You could hear him grunt slightly as your fist connects with his abdomen, but he barely pauses, grinning wickedly. Solid hit. He retaliates with a quick roundhouse kick aimed at your ribs. But can you keep up this pace?
You lean all the way back to avoid being kicked stumbling back as you tried to avoid it.
He sees your stumble and takes advantage, closing the distance. He grabs your arm and twists it behind your back, pulling you into a hold. "You're a bit slow, aren't you?" his breath is hot against your ear as he holds you in place.
Oh please as of you trained every day to fight people! You did it here and there because Megumi would scold you about it but you mostly did yoga.
Somehow you turn around to face him breaking free just to tuck your knees in between you guys to kick him off.
He flies back from the force of your kick, hitting the ground hard but quickly regaining his composure. He gets back up, his expression now serious and determined, a thin layer of sweat on his forehead. "You're more agile than I thought." He cracks his knuckles.
"Thanks?" You pull out a dagger that was strapped on your thigh and throws it towards him.
His eyes widen in surprise as he quickly dodges to the side, the dagger missing him by a hair's breadth and embedding itself in the wall behind him. He looks back at you, a mix of shock and admiration in his eyes. "A dagger?"
"We can use weapons, did you space out when I only called off abilities?"
He laughs, his eyes gleaming with a fierce intensity. "Oh, I was paying attention. I just didn't expect you to be so prepared." He pulls out a katana from behind his back, the blade gleaming in the dim light.
You pull out two other daggers but takes a defensive stance
He charges towards you, his katana slicing through the air with deadly precision. He swings it in wide arcs, forcing you to dodge and weave to avoid the attacks. You're quick, but you can't keep this up forever. Eventually, you'll tire.
"Of course you had to wield a huge Katana" you mumble.
He smirks, his breath heavy as he continues to press his attack. "It's the only weapon worthy of my skill." He leaps into the air, bringing the katana down in a powerful diagonal slash. The blade whooshes through the air, barely missing your head.
Maybe… just maybe this was a bad idea. Obviously this man years of experience compared to you. "Your gonna end up cutting my hair"
Yuta lands gracefully, his breathing now heavier from the prolonged fight. "You think too much about your appearance, shouldn't you be more worried about winning?" He shifts his grip on the katana. "Plus, your hair would look good shorter." He winks playfully.
"Definitely not worried if I’m going against you." You throw another dagger at him.
He catches the dagger mid-air with his free hand, the other still gripping his katana. Yuta throws the dagger back at you with surprising accuracy, forcing you to dodge once again.
You pull out another one that you had stored on you but this one was special compared to the others.
Yuta raises an eyebrow, slightly taken aback by your seemingly endless supply of weapons. "Just how many daggers do you have hidden on you?" he charges forward, his katana a blur as he slashes and stabs in quick succession, testing your defensive capabilities.
Grunts "plenty, can’t tell you how many though. I want it to be a surprise”
Yuta laughs, the sound echoing through the room as he dodges and parries your daggers with his katana. "A surprise, huh? Well, I love surprises." he suddenly stops his aggressive advance and holds his katana vertically in front of him, the tip pointed directly at your face. His eyes narrow, a smirk playing on his lips as he slowly lowers his katana, the point still aimed at your face. He lunges forward, his katana swinging in a wide arc towards your head.
You grab his arms and drags the dagger across his limb leaving a long cut.
"Fuck" he groans in pain as the dagger cuts into his arm, his eyes widening in shock. He pulls back instinctively, dropping his katana with a clang. "Damn it." He clutches his wounded arm, glaring at you intensely. "You're ruthless, you know that?"
"Oh common Yuta that’s not even the best part! The Dagger was coated with venom that can leave the your arm paralyzed for an hour."
his eyes widen in realization, his mind racing as he looks at the growing numbness spreading through his arm. "You... You can't be serious..." He tries to flex his hand, but it feels heavy and unresponsive.
"You’ll be fine, but you can always forfeit the fight so you won’t end up with all of your limbs paralyzed"
Yuta glances down at his paralyzed arm, then back up at you with a rueful grin, shaking his head in disbelief. "You fight dirty, don't you?" He leans heavily against the wall, trying to keep his balance as the numbness spreads.
"Common Yuta! The next cut won’t be so good, my other daggers have effects that can last the whole day."
His eyes flicker with anger and frustration as he realizes the gravity of his situation. "Alright, alright! I surrender!" He raises his good hand in defeat, his voice strained. "Just... Just call off your little attacks, okay?" He looks at you with a mixture of annoyance and respect.
You turn to your class and smile at them. "You see class you may not use flexibility during comeback but it comes in handy during defense!"
You could hear as he grumbles and leans against the wall, trying to maintain his balance as his arm remains limp and unresponsive. "Great, you win. Can I at least have some bandages or something for my arm?" He mutters but looks at you with a pout, his pride wounded more than his actual arm.
"Right! I have just the thing it, here take the drink and you should be back to normal." You hand him the drink. "Alright class over! Onto your next one." You dismiss your students a bit early to not embarrass Yuta.
He takes the drink cautiously, examining it before bringing it to his lips and taking a sip. As soon as the liquid touches his tongue, he feels a cold sensation spreading through his arm, and the numbness begins to spread. "Are you sure you have me the right thing?"
“What do you mea- oh no… I gave you the poison I use for my daggers. The stronger one with long lasting effects. I’m so sorry Yuta I didnt-“
His eyes widen in realization as the poison takes effect more rapidly, spreading through his arm and into his chest. He gasps for breath, his body beginning to feel heavy and uncoordinated.
"It wasn’t on purpose! uhhh let me see if I have the correct one!" You dig through your bag to find nothing "Dont panic but I have nothing. lucky for you this won’t kill you! you’ll just be paralyzed for the day!"
His body begins to slump as the paralysis sets in, his limbs feeling like dead weight. He glares at you with eyes that are slowly losing focus." You're telling me I'm going to be stuck like this for the entire day?" His voice is slurring slightly.
"Unfortunately."
Yuta struggles to maintain his balance, his legs now completely numb. "There has to be... some way.. to reverse it..." He stumbles forward slightly, catching himself on the wall.
You grab him and help him up by taking him home. "Don’t worry I’ll just take care of you until you feel better. don’t tell the higher ups or Megumi about this.
He turned to look at you with a wary face.
It didn’t take long for you to sneak him into the property. By this point his head had lost strength making him look down onto the floor. He collapses onto your bed, his body completely unresponsive now, his eyes fixed on the ceiling. "You're lucky I can't move... Or else I'd tell them you poisoned me on purpose..."
"Nobody would believe you anyways." Only Megumi would and you’d never hear the end of it.
He lets out a weak laugh, his chest barely rising and falling with each breath. "Probably not... pauses, his voice growing softer. You're not so bad... for a yoga sorcerer..." His eyes start to droop, the poison's effects finally taking their toll. "Just..." his voice is barely a whisper now. "Don't... leave me alone..."

Hey! Have you ever seen Masha and the bear?
I was just thinking this idea while making breakfast for my family, so how about Masha!reader x Whitebeard pirates or young!Asl. You pick.
Thanks! Have a good day
Treasure Hound (Asl x child!reader)
A/N- and with this I officially have finished my June/July requests ✊🏽. Goal is to finish september’s this week. Also I have in fact never heard of this animation which is crazy after I read how popular it is so I tried to capture Masha as best I could but it probably is not that close but hopefully close enough!
Reader here is replaced by Dokucha which stands for Reader in Japanese for the enjoyment of both reader and oc character readers alike!

“Sabo, are you sure she’s related to you?” Ace asked incredulously from his spot on his branch, watching as she rambunctiously ran around the clearing, putting even Luffy to shame as the latter struggled to keep up with the smaller girl
“Of course she is!” Had Sabo not known Ace to be so blunt, he would have likely taken offense at such a question
“Doesn’t look like that,” he muttered, taking a glance at the blond and looking back at the girl as she ran circles around Luffy, causing the latter to grow dizzy and fall back, eyes rolling around in his sockets
“She just needs to burn out all her energy. It’s always like this in the mornings,” he replied, letting out a snicker as Dokucha began shaking the poor boy in an attempt to snap him awake.
"We should let her take a look at the map we found the other day; maybe she can crack it," Sabo piped up
“No way! Sabo, we busted our asses trying to get that map; I‘m not about to trust it to a four-year-old!” Ace sneered, not willing to risk their latest treasure to what he thought to be an unnecessary risk
“She’s a lot, Ace, but she wouldn’t purposely try to destroy something, especially if she knows it’s important to me. Not to mention that, yes, she’s four, but she’s really smart; she’s especially good with plans and drafts like these,” Sabo called as he pulled out the Map
“Come on, Ace, trust me! Plus, I‘m pretty sure giving her the lead will tire her and Luffy, too!” He grinned, knowing that would be the last push the former needed
“Tch, if something happens, it’s on you,” he snarled, finally easing into his suggestion, ignoring the satisfied smirk the blond gave him as he jumped off the branch
“Dokucha come here! I got something for you!” He called, watching as the girl zoomed towards him, leaving the poor Luffy to fend off his spinning brain.
“Do you want to go on a treasure hunt?” he offered as he waved the map around, knowing the hyperactive child would never say no to an adventure or the chance to use her skills.
“Yeah!” She exclaimed as she snatched it from his hand and threw herself on the ground with him, stretching the map before them; Ace and Luffy following shortly after.
“We know the treasure is around here, but we couldn’t figure out these,” Ace told her as he pointed out what appeared to be a random arrangement of letters and numbers.
“Ah! It’s a cipher!” She beamed, stretching her arm out towards his brother without taking her eyes off the map; without any need for words, he handed her a pencil, watching as she began scribbling furiously
“Oh, what is that?!” Luffy questioned as he leaned in. Watching as the girl began to draw what looked to be a table, with each boxed being filled with a letter of the alphabet, adding some letters and numbers to the side and top of the table
“It’s a Grid code! Each letter and number stands for a specific letter! I just have to see where they intercept,” she prattled on as she continued writing away
“You already solved it?!” Ace gaped. The boy stared at the scribbles, shocked. He knew he wasn’t the best at solving puzzles, but he had thought himself to be above the girl in front of him.
“Told you she was smart,” Sabo boasted, a prideful glint in his eyes.
“Alright!” Dokucha exclaimed as she shot up from her spot, not paying any mind to the boys as she sprinted away following the directions she had deciphered from the map
“W-wait Dokucha! You need to wait for us!” Sabo called as he ran after the girl
“Don’t lose sight of her, Sabo!” Ace yelled as he, too, shot after the girl
“Hey! Wait for me!” Luffy cried as he followed after them
“Sabo, what the hell did your parents feed her?” Ace huffed out as he and Sabo threw themselves into the comfort of their sleeping bags. After they followed the girl as she traversed through the forest, crossed through rivers, and climbed mountains, they were exhausted, but it had been worth it after they had managed to find the biggest loot they had in years. To make it even better, it turns out that the plan had worked perfectly as Dokucha had also been tired out, not after running and bouncing around the place for another hour, which had also taken Luffy out.
“Well, our father and mother didn’t really fancy a daughter; they didn’t have any immediate use for her, so they just…locked her in a room, forcing her to study hours on end with no other entertainment but the books around her. So she hasn’t had the chance to run and play around like this.” Sabo sighed as he forced himself up and walked towards her, throwing a blanket over her and Luffy before returning to his spot next to Ace.
“Well, you’re parents are assholes, but we will show them, Sabo! Once we get our ship, we will show them all wrong.” he grinned as he lifted himself slightly to address his brother
“You will be a pirate that everyone will know the name of, and I will show Dokucha how big the world is and write a book about it.” Sabo grinned
“And Luffy will ****************” Ace cackled, remembering the jaw-dropping dream the crazy boy had uttered
“We will take this world by surprise, us four!”

Set after the Doyle arc, Emily’s been a bit distant and guilty for everything, you’ve been patient nonetheless.
Implied death, hurt/comfort, fluff, barely implied smut
ʕ⁎̯͡⁎ʔ༄
Word count: 737 words
a/n: I got some ideas after listening to Would You Fall in Love with Me Again, it’s short but it’s 4 am, I blame all my mistakes on that. I currently have some ideas for longer stuff but I’m lazy, tired, and uninspired so here are my scraps!! :;(∩´﹏`∩);:
Would You Fall in Love with Me Again
“I’m sorry, I know I’m not the Emily you fell in love with.”
Her voice cracked, and you’d never quite seen Emily so broken down. You could see the genuine sorrow in her eyes, each line of her face filled with guilt. After getting out of a life or death situation because of Doyle, it was as though the only thing she had left for you was regret. Emily hated it, because someone like you didn’t deserve it
Someone like you didn’t deserve to have your heart shattered, torn to bits, to be forced into grieving, just to have it all been for nothing. Yet here you were, and that was just what happened.
Even if a week had passed since her return, hardly anything was settling in, even then, you were still there.
You placed the plate of spaghetti you’d just prepared for Emily down, settling on the couch next to her. “Emily-“, you were quick to start, and Emily was quick to silence you.
“I’m sure you’re more upset than anyone on the team, you… You’re wearing my ring for god’s sake, I couldn’t bring myself to even let you know about all this…” Emily’s mouth had quivered, letting out a shaky breath as she turned to you. “I made you wait, and now I’m not even the woman you adored so much. Y/n, I…”
She looked at you, not wanting to leave you alone ever again, but at that same moment, not feeling worthy to hold you in her arms. “I’m so sorry…” Sure, Emily was in fact changed, anyone would be.
She had this tired look in her eyes, like she wasn’t truly there, like she needed some escape. You saw it in the moments where she got home from work, when she’d secretly discard your food at night. The cigarettes in Emily’s pockets, the nights you’d wake up and cradle her through a nightmare. It all tore away at her piece by piece.
But in those same eyes, you saw the same eyes that lit up every time you were near, the same eyes that called to you with a single glance.
The same eyes, pooled with that intense devotion, that stared up to you when she knelt down on one knee a year ago.
“It’s true, you left me waiting, and it hurt, the fact that I couldn’t know you were alright.” You answered her honestly, “but it hurt even more to think you were dead. I wanted whatever monster took you from me to suffer, and I felt cursed thinking that you were taken from me.”
Before she could muster a response, you took Emily’s hand, holding it against your cheek.
Instinctively, she traced her thumb against your lips.
“And I’m so, so, so happy that you’ve come back to me.” With the way you were looking at her, Emily was certain that she’d married a princess—no, some generous, all forgiving goddess.
“I don’t deserve you…” She whispered, her hand continuing its gentle caress.
You let out a little chuckle at her words, shaking your head, “see, now only my Emily, would say something so untrue. Because you, Emily Prentiss, deserve the world.”
Then to be exact, it felt as though you gave Emily a whole galaxy, because in moments like these you always brought her some solace. There was not a single doubt you couldn’t crush with your benign palms.
She could simply hold you close in response, pressing a kiss to the top of your head as you felt her heartbeat.
Emily knew that her heart would never stop, not when she’d been given the best of all women to be her fiance. She vowed to never let it stop, not when you’d be waiting for her, she could never again leave you frozen in time. Her dearest, y/n y/l/n, soon to be y/n Prentiss.
Perhaps she didn’t have to worry all that much, because somehow, you fell back in love with her new, shattered self. But really, you just simply never stopped loving her, there was no need to win you back, to make you fall in love again.
“Now… Your spaghetti’s gonna get cold….” You reminded, about to move when Emily stopped you, tenderly pushing you against the cushions. “I want my fiancé right now, not some spaghetti…” She murmured against your neck, and you smiled in response.
Forevermore, you’d never even think of giving up Emily Prentiss.

Twisted Wonderland Fear and Hunger AU
Jamil Viper
Jamil Moonschorching
The Deceiver
Growing up as a servant for the Asim family meant that every day was filled with strict responsibilities and menial tasks. His main duty as a servant of the Asims was to tend to the every whim of the heir of the Asim silk industry, Kalim. He hated him. The Asim silk industry was a thriving and highly successful conglomerate of fine and expensive fabrics. And their heir Kalim was probably the least fit person to run the company. As pampered as a pet , Kalim was a naive fool and Jamil despised him for it. He had spent years of his youth trying his hardest to teach the young heir about the responsibilities of his position and prepare him for his life ahead of him and yet he couldn't understand how the young man couldn't grasp such simple concepts.
He would find himself spending his off time dreaming of what life could be like if he were Kalim. To him it was clear as day that the heir was incompetent and Jamil himself showed such promise. Above all he wished for a better life for him and his family. They were all talented and strong willed individuals. It seemed frankly ridiculous why they were not in power as he grew older.
When Jamil reached the age of 13 his family began training him in studies of Gro-goroth The god of human sacrifices. Utilising his teachings he became skilled in magic associated with Gro-goroth. When getting involved with the old gods he has been warned about the corruptive side of Gro-groth’s power. Learning to balance his power to the best of his abilities the underbelly of the Asim house assisted in Jamil's training believing that he would become the ultimate bodyguard for the heir.
Unbeknownst to them, Jamil's hatred towards Kalim grew day by day. His patience wearing thinner before after years of his loyalty to the house he snapped. He had hurt Kalim . the person he had dedicated his entire livelihood to protecting. A part of him reveled in the power that his actions gave him but the realisation of the consequences dawned on him like an angry cloud.
If the head of the house found out about his actions he and his family would truly meet a fate worse than death.
With what little resolve he had left he fled the house and swore vengeance upon Kalim if his family was endangered . wandering the endless deserts of his homecountry he found himself on a train headed to Prehivil.
Jaim and kalim both embody multiple roles in twst alone one that stuck out to me recently was chapter 7s connection to jamil being the genie
And in a way it makes a lot of sense so the design is also somewhat reflective of that
He's still trapped in this life that he desperately wants to escape from but he's lived this life for as long as he can remember so he doesn't even know how to live outside of that responsibility but he also so desperately wants to escape from that life
Twst Jamil has expressed his interest in leaving. leaving the scalding sands and his old life behind and exploring the world and going somewhere that he has never been, that's nothing like the life he's had to live till now.
Unlike the genie his master can't just wish for his freedom and it will be granted . kalim doest have that power his father does .
(I have a lot of thoughts about the complexities of Jamil and Kalim as people their dynamic is so convoluted and morally gray on both ends that neither is completely innocent or guilty and it's so fascinating)
( could you tell that Jamil is one of my fav characters to think about )
The multiple heads of the snakes is a combination of a few different design ideas
First, its a reference to the snake hair Jamil gets in his ob design.
Second, i wanted to feel a lot like a gorgon head of snakes.
Third, the multiple heads represent Jamil's inner conflict of wanting to escape from his old life but not knowing how to since it's all he's ever known ( ex . Levi after the war returning to Prehevil despite all the pain it caused him because other than war Prehivil is all he knows and despite not liking the town doesn't know where else he could go )
The deceiver is a being of self-interest trapped by outside forces and despite its monstrous power, it can't break away from its own chains. In losing himself he loses any chance to find the life he wanted for himself. trapped in a fate controlled by higher powers once again. His legs twist together into a solid pillar forming like an incomplete snake's tail. His appearance shifts into one resembling a naga . his legs becoming one restrict his movement only further imprisoning him into the reality he finds himself to be in.
He is the deceiver yet he hides no part of himself. An example I could correlate this to would be Samaries moonscorching. dysmorphia is the embodiment of Samries view of herself and her deteriorating body and yet when she becomes dysmorphia she is happy in a way and calls herself radiant
Similarly, the deceiver shows the hidden truth and most vulnerable aspects of jamil that he keeps hidden from the world
Samarie was one of the inspirations for his moonscorched form
One of the abilities the deceiver would have is mind control ( ex the father snail enemies)
A lot of his attacks would probably be less physical and more mental/ psychological attacks that drain mind
Jamil would become the deceiver Day 2 morning if the player during day 2 morning fails to encounter jamil and doppleganger kalim
In the interaction, Jamil is within the city of Prehevil when he comes across a doppelganger Kalim if the player does not expose the doppelganger to Jamil his encounter with Kalim will escalate causing him to Moonscorch ( ex Samarie and Marina)

A Wonderful, Awful Idea / 3
Pairing: Pero Tovar x Female Reader (Modern AU)
Word Count: 8,953
Summary: Learning more about Pero - and his motivations is eye opening. Not only does it give you a better understanding of him as a man, but it makes a great deal of his behavior make sense.
Moving forward never comes without a few setbacks, though.
Rating: M: language. (warnings: talking about childhood trauma, Pero's injury, bullying, Pero and William's work - nothing in detail)
Author's Note:
Sorry this took so long to get out, but it's here now so please enjoy. I thought this would be the last part ... but in true Rachael fashion, it isn't. Hope you don't mind extending the holiday season into mid January.
The title comes from Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Thank you for reading, and happy holidays!
*dividers by @/strangergraphics
You placed the order as he drove, and by the time you’d arrived at Pero’s place, everything was in motion. It would take just under an hour to get delivered, which gave you some time to talk. He led you inside, guiding you with one hand on your back. “It is not much, but it is mine.”
Even though he’d told you it was two bedrooms, it was smaller than you anticipated based on what you knew about him. But it’s perfect for a single person. “It’s cozy.” Turning around in a slow circle, you unzipped your jacket as you spoke. “I really like it, Pero.”
The walls were light, but almost everything else was dark - furniture, shelving and window coverings included. He had a comfortable looking recliner on one side of the living room, and a large couch on the other, sitting just behind what looked like an antique wooden coffee table. Another quick look around revealed a dining room table large enough for two, a small kitchen with a set of pots and pans hanging from hooks on the wall, and a door that likely led out to a patio and the back yard.
“I use the second bedroom as an office.” He showed you down the hallway, pointing out the bathroom and his bedroom, both of those doors pulled mostly shut. “William tells me I need to get a cat to keep me company.”
“You should.” You turned around to look at him. “I think a cat could break through even your grumpiness.” He wrinkled his nose but didn’t disagree, instead pointing you back out and toward the living room. “And you could leave a cat alone for a couple days if you ever went out of town, too.”
“That would be good.” He went into the kitchen. “Do you want something to drink?” You did, but instead of asking what your choices were, you went into the kitchen to look yourself, peering over his shoulder and into the refrigerator. “I have wine. That would be -”
“Pero.” You rested your hand against his back again, feeling him stiffen briefly at your touch. “Look at me for a second.” He stood back up and spun toward you, his eyes betraying him: he was nervous. “I don’t expect anything from coming here.” Taking a deep breath, you continued. “If you don’t want to talk about what happened at my house, we don’t have to. If you don’t want to talk about what I said earlier today to Christina, we don’t have to. You invited me here for pizza, and that -”
“I want to talk about those things.” He stepped closer, one hand rising to rub at the back of his neck. “I want to talk about them very much. But I also …” He reached for you with his other hand, Pero’s fingers sliding up the length of your arm before he settled his palm against your shoulder. “I also want to kiss you, if you’ll let me.”
“I’ve been waiting all fucking night for you to do that.” He moved first again, stepping forward to push you back against the edge of the counter as his arms went around you. Pero held you close and paused just before he kissed you, inhaling through his nose. “Pero.” You whispered his name and that was all he needed.
His kiss that time was purposeful, the ends of his mustache tickling your upper lip when your mouths met. You put your hands against his sides, urging him to stay close. Finally. Pero groaned, the sound low, and when you heard it you felt your fingers curl. That noise. “No.” He backed away, shaking his head. “No, we haven’t…”
“This answers one of my questions.” You took as deep a breath as you could. “My porch, it wasn’t … you don’t regret it.”
“I don’t.” He shook his head slowly. “I have not stopped thinking about it … about you since that night.” Pero’s hands dropped to your waist. “When you turned around to look at me, I almost … I almost rushed forward again.”
“I did too.” You laughed quietly, closing your eyes. “I wanted to. But I didn’t want to scare you. I figured I’d already gotten lucky enough with a kiss that if I pushed my luck, it would … not end well.”
“I told you I am not good at this.” He wet his lips, dragging his tongue slowly over them. “I don’t like … it isn’t easy for me to tell people how I feel.” It was a gamble, but you decided to go for it.
“Then don’t tell me.” You leaned in, turning your head so that you could softly press your lips to his bruised cheek. “Show me, Pero.” You’d have plenty of time to talk afterward - and you wondered if Pero would be more open to talking once he knew for sure that you had actual feelings for him, too.
“Show you?” You nodded, meeting his eyes again. “Really?”
“Yes.” Reaching up, you pushed the hair back from his brow, guiding it behind his ear. “I’ve got a feeling that there’s a lot more in there waiting to come out, and I think you’ve been holding yourself back.” You were right - you could see it in his eyes and feel it in the way he carried himself. But I don’t want him to. “You don’t have to ask my permission to kiss me. If I didn’t want you to, you’d know.”
“And you don’t have to approach me like I am a scared animal.” He frowned, brow furrowed. “You always hesitate before you touch me. It is not necessary.”
“I’ll remember that.” Stroking the back of his neck, you took a deep breath. “Might take me some time to get used to it because I’ve had to keep my distance for so long, but …” He ducked his head, lips finding the edge of your jaw. “Oh, you…” Pero kept going, lips trailing over your skin toward your chin and then up, his mouth landing on the corner of yours before he paused and then turned his head inward. “Pero, please. I’m going to lose my mind if you don’t -”
He didn’t keep you waiting. Pero’s lips crashed into yours, and that time, they were already parted. Finally. Finally, it’s… You opened your mouth, too, and even though you’d vowed to let him lead, you didn’t think twice before you flicked your tongue against his lip and then past it, Pero’s meeting it immediately.
You’d started the kiss, but he deepened it, moving his hands from your waist up so that one of them was flat against your back and the other curved around the back of your head. He tasted like the coffee he’d had as you left the venue, and when you sighed into the kiss, he took the opportunity to graze your lower lip with his teeth.
You tightened the fingers you had in his hair, and that made Pero growl, the sound accompanied by another swipe of his tongue against yours and then more teeth, that time biting down and not letting go right away. “How is that?” He broke the kiss to breathe, but didn’t back away, instead dragging the tip of his nose along the side of yours. “For showing you?”
“It’s a good start.” You fought to catch your breath, too, letting your hands fall to his shoulders. “Fuck, Pero. I have no idea how you don’t have women beating down your door after kissing them like that.” He laughed then, finally stepping away and crossing his arms. “Why is that funny?”
“You think I kiss everyone like that?” He shook his head, eyes locked with yours. “Not a chance. That is the result of it taking this long to kiss you for the first time.” You laughed too, and reached for him, pulling him into a tight hug. “And now you have made good on what you said to Christina today.” He winked at you, and your response was to close your eyes and groan.
“I shouldn’t have said that. I just didn’t like her assuming …” Shit. You trailed off, feeling like you’d overstepped again while apologizing for overstepping earlier. “I have no right to assume anything either, but it was just … I couldn’t stop myself.”
“I don’t want you to.” He reached for you, using one finger to tip your chin up to bring your head level. “I’ve never had anyone do that for me before.” He frowned briefly, but it was more contemplative than anything else. “Claim me? It… I was not expecting it.” His lips lifted into a smile - small but genuine - and he continued. “I liked it.”
It made you feel better, especially since you knew how difficult it probably was for him to admit that to you. “That’s good to know.” You reached out, taking his hand and linking your fingers together. “Can I be honest with you?” He nodded, flexing his fingers. “I think it would be really easy to get carried away with you. I think that if I got the chance, I’d like to let that happen.” He smirked at your words, but didn’t speak. “We only have one more event together before your assignment ends, and then who knows what you’ll have to -”
“Unless there’s an emergency, we’re done from Christmas Eve through the first week of January. William and Lin are going on vacation.” He gestured to the living room. “And I planned on staying on that couch and doing absolutely nothing for as much of that time as possible.” Pero said your name. “Unless you wanted to see me then. I know you agreed to three “dates” but -”
“Yes.” You pushed off of the counter and closed the distance between you again. “I would like that.” And… “I’ve also got some time off and a very comfortable couch in my house that you can use, too.” The smile that lit up his face felt like an early present, and you returned it immediately. I wish he’d smile more. Maybe I’ll be able to make it happen. “The food will be here soon, won’t it?”
He looked over his shoulder and at the clock on the stove. “It will. Where would you like to eat?”
“It’s your house.” He stepped away from you and back toward the refrigerator. “You choose.”
“Couch. Then we can put on the TV.” He pulled out the bottle of wine. “If I drink some of this, I will still be able to take you home. But if you’d rather I didn’t, I -”
“I trust you.” You pointed. “But I also want some water.” He nodded, and as the two of you headed back into the living room, you realized that even though having someone in his house wasn’t common for Pero, he was handling things well. And when you told him as much, he sighed, reaching up to scratch at the back of his head.
“It is very … I’m surprised I am this comfortable with you here.” He held out his other hand, motioning for you not to interrupt before he finished. “Are you comfortable?”
“Pero, we just made out in your kitchen for a solid ten minutes. Yes I’m comfortable here.” He held back a smile at that, but only barely, and it made you buzz with happiness. “I do have a question for you, though.” He gestured for you to take a seat on the couch and then sat next to you, leaning back against the pillows. “You realize that Christina was hitting on you earlier, right?” He nodded slowly, mouth set in a thin line. “And that proves that women are interested in you… like, beautiful, successful, women?”
“Her success does not matter to me.” He frowned. “And there is a difference between being interested in me and being interested in me keeping her safe.”
“You offered to protect me if I ever needed it, and I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t… appealing to me.” You rubbed your hands together, looking around the room. “But she wouldn’t have kissed you like that if she wasn’t attracted to you. You have to know that. I think… I think you’ve spent so long convincing yourself that everyone else must feel a certain way about you that you actually believe it’s true.”
“Maybe.” He took a deep breath. “But it changes nothing. I don’t want to stop working with William. I don’t want to leave home for months at a time. And I would never kiss someone I worked for. It is unprofessional.”
“But you don’t really work for her now.” You looked down at your hands, hating the uncertainty that filtered into your voice. “And after the party, you won’t, so -”
“I have no interest in Christina aside from finishing the job we were hired to do.” Pero reached over, using two fingers to tilt your chin upward. “And you know very well just how … difficult it can be to change my mind.” He smiled at you, the expression softening his features. “How long did it take you to do it?”
“Years.” You bit your lip. “I know I’m being stupid, Pero. But this is still so new, I can’t help it.” He opened his mouth to reply, but before he could, the doorbell rang. “Pizza’s here.” He closed his eyes and nodded, pulling his hand away before he stood.
“Plates are in the kitchen, above the sink.”
Even though you talked while you ate, the conversation stayed light, and never circled back around to what you’d been talking about in the kitchen. Pero told you about jobs that he and William had worked, and you told him about some of your coworkers - and more about yourself. It happened naturally, work stories leading into revealing more about yourself outside of the office, along with telling him about your family and friends.
He listened intently, giving you time to talk while he chewed through mouthfuls of pizza, but Pero said very little about himself, even though you left it open for him to do so. And though you wanted to give him time and space to only tell you what he was comfortable with, part of you wondered if he’d only elaborate if he was directly asked questions.
So once the plates were cleared and the leftovers were in the refrigerator, you and Pero got comfortable on the couch again, the TV playing quietly in the background. “You said you were born in Spain?” He nodded, fingers smoothing over his mustache. “How’d you end up here then?”
“It is a long story.” He paused, shaking his head. “No. That is a lie. It is a short story that I do not tell many people.” Pero sat up, putting his hands on his knees. “My birth parents were very young when they had me. They were not ready to be parents, and could not keep me. I went through a few different homes over there, and none of them worked out. I ended up coming here when I was almost 11.” He squeezed his eyes shut. “The couple that adopted me were … they gave me everything, but they could not give me friends.” Pero looked over at you, a sad smile on his face. “I tried very hard to make the other kids like me, but it did not work. They avoided me. They teased me. As I got older, I began doing foolish things, just for attention.”
“Pero, you don’t have to -”
“No. You should know. If we are going to …” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “I was only sixteen when some classmates dared me to go into a building that had been closed off. It was very dark and I did not have a flashlight.” Pero wet his lips. “I think they planned to have someone inside to scare me, but I tripped and fell. I hurt myself badly.” He pointed at his face, making a slashing motion with his fingers. “I should have lost my eye. But I didn’t. And afterward… I just did not care anymore whether or not they liked me or talked to me.”
“Oh, Pero, that…” Reaching over, you put your hand on his knee, squeezing it. “Kids are the worst. There’s no one more cruel than a high school kid.” He didn’t say anything in response, and for a few moments, the two of you sat in silence, thinking. You tried to imagine teenage Pero, attempting to make friends in a new and strange country. You wondered what had happened after the dare - if the other kids had felt bad, or if they’d apologized, or if they’d just gone further in their dismissal of him as he healed, making him more of an outcast. He didn’t deserve it. “When did you meet William?”
“After I graduated, I did not want to go to college.” He scoffed. “My parents gave me the option, but they just wanted me to be happy with what I did.” You understood that, and as encouragement for him to continue, you reached over, setting your hand on top of his. “I am strong, so I did more of what I’d done in school and took physical jobs.” He smiled for the first time in long minutes. “I worked for a moving company. I did landscaping. I worked security at different venues.” He shrugged. “Anything people would pay me to do, I did. No one cared what I looked like or how friendly I was as long as I got the job done and didn’t ask too many questions.”
“How strong are you? I have a chair I need -” Pero reached over, shoving your knee with his hand - but as you both laughed, he didn’t pull it away, instead squeezing and then leaving it in place.
“Very strong. But you asked about William, so be quiet and I will tell you.” Miming the act of zipping your lips, you widened your eyes at him. “After he retired from the military, he started working the same kinds of jobs as me. We met while working during football season. He and Lin had just moved here for her job, and we were assigned to the same team.”
“Let me guess. He started talking and wouldn’t stop?” Pero nodded, his thumb moving slowly over the outside of your knee. “He does that. It’s kind of annoying.”
“Very annoying. But somehow, with William, I didn’t… he wasn’t talking to me out of pity. He just wanted to talk to someone, and I was a good listener.” That didn’t come as a shock, but Pero wasn’t done. “Lin’s family has money, and there were a few times they needed security for things they did - events and trips. They paid William to find people to provide it, and he asked me to help. I did, because even though he was annoying, I did not mind the work.”
“And you became actual friends.” He nodded. “How long did that take?”
“Only six months.” Pero rolled his eyes. “Lin is very persistent.” That made you laugh again, and even Pero’s scowl was less severe than usual. “And when William came to me and told me he wanted to open a company of his own - with just the two of us? I could not say no.”
That had been before you’d met any of them, because when you’d gotten to know Lin and William, he’d already been working with Pero, and the business’ reputation was well established. “It’s good that you met him, then.” Pero nodded. “It’s just the two of you? Doesn’t that limit the -”
“We have a few other people we can call if we need them. Some of William’s old military contacts have been reliable in the past.” He looked down. “But yes, mostly it is just us, because people trust us. And that is …” He looked up and at you again, a pensive expression on his face. “I’m still not used to that.”
“But you’re good at what you do.” He nodded. “So why wouldn’t people trust you to do your job? In your line of work, I feel like word of mouth is -”
“Very important, yes.” He inched closer, averting his eyes briefly. “But there are times when we …” He gestured at his bruised face with his free hand. “Do not deserve that trust.” He feels like he failed because he got hurt? But he said he handled it. He said… “I do not like having to get physical, but sometimes … sometimes it is unavoidable.”
“Have you ever seriously hurt someone, Pero?” You asked the question before you could stop yourself, and once it was out, you worried that he wouldn’t answer.
“Yes.” He looked you in the eye as he answered. “Do not ask me if I have done worse than that, because I cannot answer.” What? You stiffened, but didn’t move away. Does that mean he’s killed someone? “The job, it does not always … we don’t stick around. I only know what happens while I’m there.” What kinds of jobs do they take?
“Is that another reason you don’t want to get close to anyone?” Your voice was steady, and you hoped that helped convince him you weren’t reacting poorly to his words. “Because you’re afraid that they wouldn’t… accept what you do?”
“Yes.” The word was accompanied with a single nod. “I don’t want to lie to someone, and unless I tell them exactly what I do, I’d have to.”
“But you just told me.” You spoke quietly, heart pounding as understanding coursed through you. “So what does that mean?”
“I don’t know.” He smiled, but it was short-lived. “I don’t usually do this.” You had a lot of thoughts, but didn’t know how to vocalize them. Pero opening up to you in such a big way was unexpected, and you knew that if it felt that way for you, it must have been even more of a shock for him. “I understand if you don’t… if knowing this makes you uncomfortable.” He pressed his lips together. “I did not mean to tell you all of it.”
“I’m glad you did.” You thought for a few seconds and then moved even closer, saying his name softly. “Thank you for trusting me.” It still wasn’t everything - and you knew it. But what Pero had revealed to you was more than enough to make you look at him differently, and with more understanding. “Did you really think that I knew the nitty gritty parts of what you and William do? That isn’t … something that Lin and I talk about. And William and I -”
“I thought you would just assume.” He waved a hand in the air between you. “You watch enough TV to know that private security isn’t always safe and simple for anyone involved.”
“Pero, we need to work on this.” You lifted a hand and reached for him, thumb stroking along his cheekbone. “You can’t just assume that I assume things. And you can’t write shit off before you give it a chance to happen.” He leaned into your touch, the expression on his face relaxing slightly. “You don’t have to tell me everything, but if you and I are going to be friends, we need to have an understanding.”
“You want to be my friend?” He blinked, and used the tip of his tongue to wet his lips. “Just a friend?” You hadn’t meant it like that, but it didn’t surprise you that he’d chosen that to focus on.
“Ideally, we’d be more than friends.” You closed your eyes, exhaling. “But even if it doesn’t get to that point, it’s still true that you can’t be friends with someone you hide from.” Pero was silent, and when you reopened your eyes, you were worried that you wouldn’t like whatever expression he chose as a response.
“It really does not scare you that I am capable of violence?” You heard uncertainty in his voice, immediately understanding that Pero was completely out of his element with you. “Bruises and scars and secret jobs wouldn’t make you want to -”
“Pero.” You took a breath and then leaned in, kissing him on the lips. “I’m not afraid of you. The rest of it… I don’t like to think about it, but it’s not enough to make me run for the hills right now, no.” He considered your words for long seconds, his lips parted and eyes searching your face. Go for it. Just do it. “You just told me that you spent years trying to make friends and get close to people but it didn’t work. Now I’m trying to get close to you, and -”
He hauled you closer, your eyes widening as he leaned back into the corner of the couch, pulling you with him. “Is this close enough?” He mumbled the words before he kissed you, lips soft as they pressed to yours. “Because I think we could get closer.”
It stunned you how quickly Pero seemed to waver between moments of uncertainty and confidence, and you wondered if it had been that way for him for his whole life, or just when it came to friendships and relationships. He doesn’t seem uncertain about his abilities or his competence, it’s just … people. “This is good.” You pressed a hand to his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heart beneath your palm. “Are you alright with it?”
He didn’t answer with words. Instead, Pero shifted more, moving so that his back was against the backrest of the couch and he was laying on his side. He urged you closer, and without giving yourself time to think about it, you pulled your legs up and stretched them out, laying on your side to face him. He draped an arm over you, fingers lazily moving against the center of your back.
You stared at each other, both of you adjusting to the new - and unexpected - position you were in. He didn’t look afraid or unsure; for the first time, Pero seemed like he was comfortable with the proximity to you, and the fact that he’d been the one to initiate it. “How much longer would you have waited?”
“For?” You raised a hand, using two fingers to push hair away from his brow. “I’m not sure what you mean.”
“For me to get my head out of my ass and speak to you.” He closed his eyes and groaned. “To do something that was not shut down any conversation you tried to have.”
“I wasn’t waiting for you.” You sighed and continued to move your fingers through the softness of his curls. “I’ve dated. I’ve always been interested in you, but I knew it was pointless to just … hope that someday you’d change your mind and decide you wanted more than saying hello or asking how I was.” His hand stopped moving and his fingers curled inward, pressing against your back. “And part of me thinks that without this assignment and your need to blend in, that wouldn’t have changed.”
“William and Lin have been encouraging me to …” He sighed and rolled his eyes. “Quote ‘get over my shit and tell you how I feel.” You stifled a laugh, and even Pero’s lips twitched. “You would have worn me down eventually, unless you just … stopped trying.”
“Three years is a long time, Pero.” You shifted your hips and his hand dropped lower, gliding over your lower back and stopping on your hip. “And I honestly thought you hated me, so … I’m not sure how much longer I would have kept at it.” You hadn’t known the words would come until you spoke them, and from his reaction, you knew that he could tell you were just as surprised as he was that you’d admitted it. “I can only handle so much rejection.”
“That makes two of us.” He sighed again, closing the distance and turning his head so that he could speak into your ear. “I never hated you. It was always the opposite.” He squeezed your hip as he kissed your cheek. “And I am glad you did not give up on me.”
It felt good to be held by him, and it didn’t seem necessary to reply… so you didn’t. Instead, you inched even closer, tucking your head against his body and closing your eyes. Things were moving fast, even by your standards, and that meant that for Pero, it must have been at an unthinkable pace.
“This is nice.” You took a deep breath, inhaling his scent. “Let me know when you want me to get up, or when you want to take me home or -”
“If I pull the blanket down, we could sleep here.” The words startled you, and you backed away, lips parted and eyes wide. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Would you want that?” He moved his hand slowly, sliding it back up and pushing your shirt with it. “Oh, you…” You shivered at the way it felt to have his skin touch yours for the first time, his fingertips moving against your side. “Just to sleep?”
“If you would be comfortable.” He looked scared but certain. “Sleeping in those clothes, I mean.” You didn’t like the idea of sleeping in your jeans, but you did have a sleeveless shirt on beneath the sweatshirt you’d chosen - and you hated the idea of saying no to something you’d fantasized about for months. I can unbutton my jeans. It’ll be fine.
“I’d like that.” You nodded. “What about you?”
“My clothes are right down the hall.” He smiled, tapping his finger against your skin. “I can go change.”
“Do you have a toothbrush I can use? Or mouthwash? I don’t want to go to bed without -”
“I do.” Pero sighed and then reluctantly sat up, which forced you to do the same. “Come. I will show you.”
He let you use the bathroom while he changed. The whole time, you tried to ignore the fact that you were going to spend the night with Pero on his couch, which meant extremely close quarters. It’s not the bed. It’s not going to lead to anything. You figured that that was why he hadn’t mentioned the bed; not because it would result in you having sex, but instead because he didn’t want to imply that he was thinking of sex.
But it was impossible not to let your mind wander when you emerged from the bathroom and saw him leaning against his door frame, arms crossed loosely over his chest - and the light gray t-shirt he wore - with his hip popped, dark gray sweatpants hanging low enough on them that there was a sliver of skin visible at his waist. I’m fucked.
“I put a second pillow on the couch. He gestured with his chin. “I will be out in a few minutes. Anything you need from the kitchen, please take.” You nodded and then turned away, biting down hard on your lip as you headed back into the living room.
If Pero’s choice in pajamas had such an effect on you, you could only imagine how you’d react to seeing him without clothes. If I ever do. It only took you a minute or so to get a couple bottles of water from the fridge and set them both on coasters atop the coffee table, putting them within reach. You removed your sweatshirt then, folding it it - and your bra - and setting them over and onto the chair before your hands moved to your waist, and the button there.
“If you take those off, it’s going to be even more difficult for me to only think about sleeping.” He emerged from the hallway, arms swinging by his sides. “But if that’s what you want…” He winked at you, pausing long enough to flip the light switch, which plunged the room into darkness aside from the glow of the TV. “I will not stop you.”
“I’m just unbuttoning them.” You did it as you spoke, watching as his eyes dropped to watch your hands. “Sorry to disappoint.” Was that an invitation? “Do you have to be up early tomorrow or anything?”
“No. You?” You shook your head as he took a seat on the couch, reaching for the large blanket that was folded and resting on the back. “Good. We can sleep in.”
Pero laid down on his side, and you laid in front of him, choosing to face him instead of put your back to his chest. As the blanket settled over the two of you, Pero’s arm moved back into place - but that time, he didn’t wait to push his hand beneath your shirt, resting his palm against your lower back.
That gave you the courage to do the same with him, but instead of leaving your hand low, you slid it up the center of his back, following the line of his spine. “Is this too much?”
“Never.” Voice thick, he continued. “If I trusted myself we would be sleeping in my bed.” I was right. He cleared his throat and then sighed, breath washing over your cheek. “I have wanted this with you for … too long.”
“Well, now you’ve got it.” Tilting your head back, you kissed his stubbled chin. “Are you going to kiss me goodnight, or not?” It seemed that he’d been waiting for your invitation, because as soon as you finished your question, Pero’s mouth was on yours, his upper body angled so that it pressed against your chest.
The kiss started slow, Pero taking your lower lip between his gently before releasing it, a quiet sigh escaping from deep in his throat. When you parted your lips and grazed one of his with your teeth, his touch on your side tightened, fingers digging into your skin. You wondered if you’d just caught him by surprise - or if his reaction meant that Pero liked a hint of pain with his pleasure. I hope I get to find out.
He moved his hand up your side as the kiss deepened, Pero’s tongue poking between your lips at the same moment his fingertips touched the underside of one breast - and you moaned into his mouth, back arching slightly.
With anyone else, it would have been embarrassing that all it took was one simple touch to get that kind of response out of you, but with Pero, you didn’t care. He broke the kiss, murmuring the words such pretty sounds, and then trailed a series of kisses across your cheek and down, over your jaw. Each kiss was accompanied by a swipe of his thumb, the rough pad of it traveling over the swell of your chest. “Pero, I -” He circled your nipple with that same thumb and you whimpered, eyes squeezed shut.
“You like that.” He spoke without lifting his mouth from your skin, instead nudging your head to the side with his nose and then dragging his lips over the column of your throat. Who the fuck wouldn’t? You freed your hand from beneath his shirt and buried your fingers in the hair at the back of his head, Pero’s mouth descending further toward the collar of your shirt.
You felt the bite of his teeth against your skin, followed by his tongue soothing the same space, and you hummed, tightening your grip on his hair. “Keep doing that, please.” You forced the words out, pushing the hand trapped between your bodies beneath his so that you could grab at his hip - and when you did, you felt him through his sweats where he was pressed against your thigh. Oh, fuck.
Testing your luck, you pulled him forward, urging him closer - and Pero rewarded you with a roll of his hips, the motion giving you a better idea of exactly what was waiting below his waist. And when he did that, you decided to push things even further, slipping your fingers beneath the waistband of his pants and back, following the curve of his body.
Pero smiled against your throat, rocking his hips forward again and allowing you to feel the flex of muscle beneath your touch. But then he cleared his throat, hand staying in place as he raised his head. “I need to slow down.”
“No you don’t. I wasn’t stopping you.” He smiled at your words, closing his eyes as he shook his head. “What?”
“You deserve better than a couch.” When he opened his eyes and met yours, you saw resolve in them, and any argument that you might have made died on your lips. I need to let him do this his way. “I did not invite you here tonight to end up in bed with you. I just wanted… to get to know you.”
“I did say it would be easy to get carried away with you.” He nodded. “But if you want to stop, we’ll stop.” You gave him a squeeze and wrinkled your nose at the way his eyes flashed at the feeling of your touch. “I -”
“I do not want to, but we should.” He ducked down, mouth meeting yours again. “It will give us something to look forward to.” That was an understatement; you knew that all you’d look forward to was the time when Pero didn’t feel the need to hold himself back. As he settled back into place beside you, he pulled you with him, bringing you both back into the position you’d been in before the kiss.
But he left his hand in place high on your side, the warmth of his palm comforting. “I’m glad that this job happened.” Snuggling closer to him, you sighed. “I’m glad we’re getting this chance.” He kissed your forehead but didn’t speak, hand slipping around to your back and stopping there. “Goodnight, Pero.”
“Goodnight, you.” You felt him move as you shifted, too. When both of you were comfortable, you sighed again, arm tightening over his side. It felt good to be held by Pero, the deep, even breaths he was taking lulling you even closer to sleep as the moments passed. The TV’s volume was low enough that you could barely hear it, but aside from your breathing, that was the only other audible sound. I like this. I really like this.
Time ticked by, and Pero’s breaths got slower and longer, though his hand didn’t move from where it rested. “Pero?” You spoke quietly, figuring that if he didn’t respond, you wouldn’t say anything else. But he grunted, the sound something that could have been your name. Good enough. “You don’t snore, do you?”
“Maybe if you’re quiet for long enough, you will find out.” Cracking an eye open, you saw that he was glaring at you, but as soon as he noticed you looking, the expression changed to a smile, followed by his arm tightening. “Sleep. It has been a long day.”
You couldn’t argue with that, and only minutes later, both of you were past the point of no return - neither of you snoring.
You finished Christmas shopping over the next few days, stopping to pick up last minute gifts after work and wrapping while you relaxed after dinner.
You usually bought things for Lin and William, but that year, you decided to get Pero something, too. You figured that if you handed the other gifts over on Christmas Eve, it would be weird not to have one for him. It wasn’t anything big - you bought a bottle of the wine you’d seen in his refrigerator and a gift card to one of the restaurants you’d talked about and he’d said he liked.
But you signed the card that you put the gift card into the card differently than you signed the others, chewing on the end of the pen for long moments before you started writing. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you, Pero. I’m glad we finally made it happen - let’s not stop.
The bag with his gift in it joined the ones for William and Lin on your kitchen counter, the colorful wrapping catching your attention each time you were in the room.
The morning of Christmas Eve, you woke up before your alarm, giving yourself a few minutes to stare at the ceiling. This is it. Today is … Your mind wandered back to Pero, and waking up in his arms. It brought a smile to your face, the same way it had when it was actually happening, the muted morning sunlight filtering in through his blinds and giving you a clear view of his features.
It was the first time you’d ever seen Pero truly relaxed - jaw slack, a lock of hair hanging over his eyes and all of the tension he usually carried in his body gone, the rise and fall of his chest at regular intervals. He was almost more handsome while sleeping than he was awake, and the best part of it was that even though you’d both shifted during the night, neither of you had let go of the other.
You wondered if it was because of the forced proximity on the couch, or if unconsciously, the two of you just hadn’t wanted to separate after so long spent dancing around each other. Whatever the case, you didn’t care. You liked being in his arms, and if the kiss he’d given you immediately after opening his eyes was any indication, Pero felt the same way.
The two of you spoke a little over the following days, but you were busy with work, and he and William were busy with their company, too, getting contracts set up for the new year as well as making contacts for potential future business.
But each time your phone screen lit up with a message from him, you smiled. And every time you sent one back, you hoped that he was looking forward to reading it. It felt like the beginning of a new relationship, and even though there were no actual promises of it continuing after the party, you had a feeling that it would.
Those kinds of thoughts got you through until early afternoon, when you got into the shower so that you could begin to get ready for the night. You spent a lot of time under the spray, the bathroom filling with steam and the scents of all of your different products. It calmed you, which you needed, and by the time you stepped back into your bedroom, robe wrapped tightly around your body, you’d convinced yourself that the night would be the actual start of something between you and Pero. Why wouldn’t it be? After the last couple weeks?
You did your hair and makeup before you got dressed, paying careful attention to your reflection - and your overall appearance. Again, you wanted Pero to know that you’d taken care to look good for him, especially after learning about his past - and more about the way he viewed himself.
Lin texted you while you were finishing with your clothes, telling you that when you got to their place, you should park on the street. You sent back a reply along with a thumbs up emoji, and just before you could set the phone back down, a new message came though - that one from Pero.
Should I shave?
He’d included a picture, something that he hadn’t ever done before - a shot of himself in a mirror, his head turned to the side so that you could see his heavily stubbled cheeks. His hair was wet and slicked back, and there were telltale wet spots on his t-shirt, evidence that he’d recently showered. Thank you for putting a shirt on before you sent this, otherwise I would have dropped my phone.
You thought for a few seconds and then typed a message back, chewing on the inside of your cheek the entire time.
Up to you. I like how it looks either way, Pero.
Truthfully, you wanted him to keep the stubble, and it was for a selfish reason. You wanted to feel it when he kissed you, the scrape of it dragging over your skin. The thought made you shiver, and sent you back to the memory of kissing him at his front door, Pero nuzzling against your cheek before whispering goodbye.
But I have to say I’m partial to you keeping it.
It took him a few seconds to respond, but when he did, it was just a single word, followed almost a minute later with another short message.
Done.
See you soon.
You parked where Lin had instructed you to and then made your way up to the front door, carrying the box of gifts. After knocking once, you stepped inside, calling out for your friends. They didn’t answer, so you went into the living room and put the packages beneath the tree, standing back to admire the way it looked as you removed your coat. “You look amazing.” Turning your head toward the sound, you grinned at Lin, who was standing in the doorway. “He’s going to love that outfit.” Is he?
You’d opted for a pair of high-waisted pants in a soft material, and a dark red long-sleeved shirt that had a lower cut neckline than you typically wore - but that had caught your eye while you finished shopping. You’d paired it with simple jewelry - a pair of necklaces and a sparkling bracelet on one wrist. It was likely more dressed down than many of the other party attendees would be, but you wanted to be comfortable… and ready, just in case. “I hope so.” You looked down and then back up at her, closing your eyes and inhaling deeply. “I almost wore a dress, but it’s cold out, and I bought a new pair of boots but they wouldn’t have matched, so -”
“It’s perfect.” She stepped forward, reaching out to take your hands. “He’ll be here soon, William said he’s on his way.” Good. I’m excited. “Are you coming over tomorrow? We’ll be eating at four, and I think Tovar’s said he’ll come, too.” You hadn’t expected that; Pero had never been at a holiday gathering before, and part of you wondered if he’d opted not to come because you’d been invited. Not this year though.
“I am.” You squeezed her hands and then pulled yours free, gesturing at the tree. “I put your presents under there, so we can open them after we eat.” She nodded, eyeing you up and down. “What?”
“You look different.” Cocking her head to the side, she crossed her arms. “You haven’t said anything about what happened after the concert, but -”
“We’ll see what happens after tonight.” Your heart thumped, but you looked her in the eyes while you spoke. “I don’t want to jinx anything, Lin. But he and I will have time to talk, and -” You both turned toward the sound of the front door opening and closing, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps in the front hall. He’s here.
“Tovar? Is that you? We’re in here!” Lin spoke up before you could, and only moments later, you watched as Pero stepped into the room, unzipping his jacket. You opened your mouth to say hello, but froze when you saw what he was wearing.
Oh, he looks … I’ve never seen him dressed like …
He’d kept the stubble. And even though his hair was styled, it still looked a little wild, the ends of it curling over his forehead and out from behind his ears. But it was his outfit that rendered you speechless.
It did have plenty of buttons; Pero’s dress shirt was a charcoal gray color that had a slight shine to it, the material stretched over his broad frame - unbuttoned at the neck and tucked into a pair of fitted black pants. He’d traded his usual boots for dressier ones, and when you brought your gaze back up, you watched as he reached over to set his jacket down on the back of a chair.
That gave you a peek at his chest and wrist, and you actually gasped out loud at the glimpse you got of two pieces of silver jewelry: a thick chain around his neck, and one in the same style - though thinner - around his right wrist.
You suddenly felt wildly underdressed, but when you watched his eyes widen as he looked you over, that changed. He looked at you with want, Pero’s gaze almost hungry as he closed the distance between you. I need him to look at me like that all the time. I need … wow.
“Hello.” Pero stopped just before he reached where you stood, turning his head toward Lin and smiling. “You look beautiful, Lin-Mae.” She gave him a wide smile and stepped forward, throwing her arms around him and telling him that he was being too kind.
“I’ve had this dress for years. It was a gift from my mother right after William and I got married. I only wear it for special occasions.”
“And you.” He turned back to you, reaching out for your hand and waiting until you took his to speak again. “Perfect.” That was a stretch, but you weren’t going to correct him. You maintained eye contact as he raised your hand to his lips, kissing your knuckles. “Hi.” Mouthing the word back at him, it took everything in you not to take the final two steps forward and pull him close for a kiss.
“William is in his office.” Lin sighed. “You should go and see if he’s ready, Tovar. We have to leave in like fifteen minutes, so -” He nodded, giving your hand one final squeeze before dropping it. “We’ll be in the kitchen.”
He turned away and toward the office while you and Lin went into the kitchen and took seats at the raised countertop. She stared at you but didn’t speak, and when she raised an eyebrow, you held up a hand. “Don’t even start. That was -”
“It’s good to see him like that with someone.” She spoke quietly, sighing as she reached over to put her hand on top of yours. “I’ve been hoping that he would open up. And it looks like he has.” She smiled at you. “And after only two nights? Impressive.”
“Technically three, because we went out for coffee before the fundraiser. And a morning, because I spent the night at his place after the concert.” She gasped, and you had to bite your lip to hold back a laugh. Surprise. “Not like that. We just slept.”
“And you didn’t tell me?” She scoffed. “I thought we were friends.”
“We are. But that isn’t something that -”
“Was it all a lie?” You both turned toward the sound of his voice, finding Pero standing in the kitchen entryway with a small stack of papers in his hand. “Was any of the time you spent with me because you wanted to?”
“What?” You stood, taking a half step toward him. “Pero, what are you -” He held up the papers, sneering.
“You are on the payroll, no? This is just a job to you? I am just a job to you?” He tightened his grip on the paper, the sound of it wrinkling loud in your ears. The contract. He found the contract.
“It had to be official, yeah, because William needed to file it, so -” He laughed, the sound humorless, and then closed his eyes. “So I signed a contract, but -”
“I have paid women before.” He looked nowhere but at you when he opened his eyes, and you sucked in a breath at the hurt you saw in them. He isn’t mad. He’s just sad. I didn’t … but it’s just incidentals. Not paying me to … “But with them I knew exactly what I was getting.” He crossed the room and slapped the papers down onto the countertop before meeting your eyes again. “I trusted you. I told you things I have never told anyone. And for what?” He shook his head. “Enjoy your money. You will not need to spend more time with me tonight to earn the last of it.”
William appeared in the hallway then, holding another stack of papers, the sound of Pero’s name spilling from his lips. “Tovar, you need to look at -”
“No. I need to look at nothing. All of you… you all knew. You planned this and did not tell me.” He pointed a finger at William. “I will finish this job tonight, but then I am done.” You gasped at that, and so did Lin. Even William’s eyes widened, his mouth still open. This makes no sense. That’s not what we …
“Pero, please.” William moved forward, holding up the papers again. “If you just -” But instead of answering, he gave you one final look and then turned away, striding past William and back into the hallway. Moments later, the sound of the front door slamming made you flinch. He left. He left me here and he …
“William, what the fuck just happened?” Lin got up, making her way to where her husband stood. “Tovar was fine in the living room, and then …”
You finally moved, reaching for the papers that Pero had set down in front of you as your eyes welled up with tears. It doesn’t make sense. Yes, I took this as a job, but it isn’t… that’s not what …
But when you started reading the top sheet of paper, it all made sense.
Somehow, Pero had gotten his hands on the original version of the contract William had presented to you - and not on the updated one.
Stay tuned for part 4!

Pretty panties
"Nice panties, bro" Alex laughed. I jumped up realizing my panties must be showing, he smacked my ass with a laugh.
"What's that Alex?" Maria asked thinking she must of heard wrong.
"Paul her is where so pretty panties" he announced the room became quiet.
"Really?" Maria gasped.
"Julie did you know?" She turned and asked my wife.
"Yes, he says they make him feel sexy" Julie told them. I wanted to hide. But Alex put his arm around me.
"No harm in that" he assured me.
Cathy jumped up and pulled back my waistband to see. "Wow Victoria Secret, are they yours Julie?" She asked
"No he has his own" Julie said no laughing a little at how ridiculous it sounded. Everyone wanted to see. So Cathy pulled my pants down a bit so everyone could see the white lace panty trim.
There was some more teasing and Julie got some more questions. Which she mostly just deflected. But it was forgotten and the conversations for the evening moved on. It appeared in some jokes at my expense. I was quiet the rest of the evening secret loving the humiliation.
Julie would whisper things to people, I wondered what she was telling them. This was our inner circle of friends. They just moved on. Or so I thought.
As the night moved on to games, I noticed Julie had disappeared. I went to see if she was okay.
Upstairs I heard noises coming from the master bedroom. I approached slowly the door was partially open. Alex had Julie up against the wall her held her hands above her head with one hand. Her jeans around her ankles as he fingered her. With his other hand and kissed her neck. Conflicted on one hand it was the hottest thing I had ever seen. On the other that was my wife.
"Alex stop, you're going to make me cum" Julie wimpered. As she came Alex held her up as she did. Julie recovered and pushed him away. Alex laughed and left. He walked right past me on his way downstairs. Julie panicked when she saw me there. I came in the room and closed the door.
"Alex! I spilled wine and came up to change my pants he followed me and" Julie was babbling. I kissed her. I wanted her so bad.
"Stop!" Julie said pushing me away. "We will talk about this later" she told me. She realized I was rock hard in my pants.
"We don't have time for this" she said annoyed. She sighed I dropped my pants I stood before her in my lace panties she smiled and rubbed them
"No you can wait, so what if everyone see you little bulge" she smiled and left me standing there as she changed her pants. I waited a few minutes before I went downstairs as well. I was stopped at the bottom of the stairs by Laura. Laura was the elder of the group you could say, she was about to turn 40. Hanging out with us about to turn 30 crowd.
"Alex is going to fuck Julie, you know that I know that. If it happens tonight or not is up to you" Laura ran her hand over my growing bulge again.
"Julie says you aren't very big but you have a very talented tounge" She continued. I had no idea what to do. Until I looked over to see Alex standing behind Julie his hand on her ass.
"You like that don't you? You want Alex to take her, fuck her" Laura whispered. Just then Tom and Joanne announced they had to go. The only ones in the group with kids. Joanne gave me a hug but Tom seemed to ignore me as they left. After that the party seemd to be breaking up. It was after midnight. Alex helped Julie start cleaning up. Laura pulled me aside and had me watch.
"See how she moves towards him. She wants him." She told me."I hear Alex has a nice fat cock, do you like fat cock? Is that why you wear pretty panties?" I wanted to explode as Laura just whispered in my ear.
Laura went and spoke to Julie as I remained watching from around the corner. What was she saying? Laura and Julie physically could not of been more different. Julie was tall while Laura was maybe 5' Laura was thin an athletic build. With smaller perky breasts. Laura heavier with huge DD chest. I lost track of Laura till she came up behind me.
"You want me to let Alex have me?" She asked she was serious. I turned. And nodded.
"No baby you have to say it, I have to know for sure." She said.
"Yes, let him fuck you with his fat cock" I told her. She smiled.
"Laura been alone for awhile, you can't fuck her. Especially with your little dick" she rubbed me thru my pants. "But you can use that tounge if she wants you too" Julie walked over and kissed Alex. As the Laura saw the last couple out. Alex picked up Julie and put her on the counter. Laura came up behind me. She unbuttoned my pants.
"Take them off" she told me rubbing my pantied ass. We watched as Alex removed Julie's shirt and bra.
"She has a great body, Alex is going to enjoy it tonight" Laura said biting my ear. We watched until they where both naked and Julie dropped and took Alex inner mouth.
"He does have a nice cock" Laura said then led me upstairs " they should have primacy. She led me into the small spare bedroom. It only had a twin bed.
"They deserve the big bed, after all they are going to fuck" Laura said. She dropped her skirt.
"Take off my panties and pleasure me. Just me" she told me as she sat on the bed. I removed her panties she removed my shirt I now only wore my panties, Laura trimmed her bush, Laura was shaved hers off. I thought as I sank my tounge in Laura she was very wet ad I slurped and sucked her labia. Teased her clit. Laura pulled my hair forcing me in closer as if I could be somehow. She came easily but didn't let me up. Till she came again, my face soaking wet. A puddle on the egpdge of the bed. I had never had a woman get so wet. I could hear sounds from across the hall. Laura guided me. We peeked thru the partially open door to see Alex fucking my wife. Laura rubbed me thru my panties. But only let me watch for a moment then took me back to the spare room.
I tried to kiss her.
"No" Laura told me. "I like men, you are a panty boy, that's why Julie is across the hall with a man." She told me. She had me lay on the bed with her. She still wore her shirt.
"You staring at my tits? Do you like tits? They are for real men. Maybe you want a pair of your own. Do you wear pretty bras as well hoping one day to have tits?" Laura teased. "I think you want cock, that's what I think that you are a little gay bitch hiding in the closet" Laura told me rubbing my ass. I was so horny I just wanted to cum. There was a big wet spot of precum on the front of my panties.
"You want to cum? Then you must go ask Julie for lube. Be polite make sure you knock" Laura told me. I went to grab my pants.
"No, let Alex see you as a panty wearing sissy" Laura told me. I didn't know why but I did as she said. I knocked and Laura called out
"Yes?"
"I need some lube" I replied thru the door.
"Come in" Julie said her and Alex where under the covers.
"Look how excited you are" Julie laughed handing me the lube.
"What's this for?" Her eyes widened.
"Laura didn't say" I said. "Thank you" I turned to leave.
"Wait take this too" Julie handed me a pink cock shaped vibrator. I blushed. "Just in case" Julie smiled. I headed back across the hall. I gave them both to Laura.
Laura looked straight into my eyes " have you tried this?" Holding up the vibrator. I shook my head no.
"But you have thought about it" she said I just looked at the floor. "Come here" she patted the bed. She positioned me so I was facing away from her.
"I want you to watch your favorite porn on your phone" Laura told me. "What really gets you off" she pulled down my panties and applied lube to my ass.
"I dont" I begged
"I am going to fuck your ass, now where the porn" she asked. I found some porn it was a girl teasing a guy about wearing panties. As it started Laura pushed her finger in my ass.
"Show me the real stuff" Laura whispered working in a second finger. I turned on a crossdresser sucking a guy's dick.
"I knew it" Laura picked up the toy and held it to my mouth. "Show me" she said I starred to suck on the toy. As she finger fucked my ass.
"I want to cum" I rang out I am sure Alex and Julie heard me.
"No you don't you want to make him cum" She told me now three fingers in my ass. She had me take more and more of the toy in my mouth. She then took the toy and shoved It in my ass as soon as she turned it on I came filling the front of my panties.
"You like cum don't you, I know you have tried it. Take off your panties and clean them" she told me the vibrator still in my ass. I did as she said she worked the toy until I cleaned my panties. When I was done she had me go down on her again. We slept holding each other on that little bed. When we woke Julie was up, Alex was gone. Laura told me to go put on fresh panties. I did and went downstairs. I came in to Laura giving a detailed account of last night to Julie.
Alex fucked your wife this morning she hasn't showered yet. Why don't you help her out. Julie hoped onnthe counter exactly where I had watched Alex take off her clothes last night. And I buried my face in her used pussy. Licking up all of her lovers cum. Laura finished her coffee and left without a word.
"Baby, I think we need to talk" Julie smiled

MARK GRAYSON: “I DON’T WANT YOU TO GO—“
— contents: spending time with mark before he leaves for a mission. — from the author: i kinda had a like superhero!reader in mind because why not. but it’s totally fine if u imagine reader as just a civilian. i'll try to post more often! c:
“i hate getting sandy feet.”
you whined, the sunset’s glow reflecting on the ocean’s surface, leaving traces of its’ warmth on your face in its’ wake. you could feel the waves crashing right in front of you, gently caressing your legs before returning back into its' vast sea of blue.
you were at the beach with mark, and you had the place all to yourselves. you two decided to spend the whole day together and make the most out of the time he has left before going on a crazy space alien mission. you knew this mission could take weeks—months even, and this would mean you'd be mark-deprived for more than just the usual couple of days due to college. you always told mark you understood his situation, and you really did. after all, he had some big shoes to fill in. because of the distraught and calamity omni-man left behind on earth, you could sense the underlying guilt mark had because of what his father did. you knew deep down he was trying to atone for everything he caused, even if he never outright told you so.
mark laughed, lifting a hand up to splash water onto you, “stop being such big baby.”
you groaned as the feeling of saltwater dripping from your hair stuck onto the cool surface of your skin. you rolled your eyes, turning away from mark with a pout. subconsciously, you've been counting the days until mark would embark on his mission—and it's not like you wanted to. you've been avoiding doing so because you knew how much of a crybaby you could get when it comes to goodbyes, and you weren't exactly fond with the idea of crying in a public area. but no matter how hard you tried to think of something funny to renounce the tears pricking from the corners of your eyes, you felt them burn. burn from the upcoming wave of emotions you were trying so hard to bury. and unwillingly—your lips began to quiver.
with your back against him, mark, with his eyes as sharp as ever, could see the subtle shudder of your shoulders and a quiet sniffle he could never miss erupt from your hunched figure. he hurriedly swam his way towards you with a worried expression on his face, the sounds of waves spattering with each step he took. “(y/n)? what’s wrong?“
mark came face to face with you, his eyes growing wide the moment you turned around. the sunset's orange hues gave your hair the perfect glow, your eyes—already going red with tears threatening to spill at any moment, shined alongside your wet cheeks—stained by saltwater, your nose tinted red, and your lips were shaking like a leaf rustling against the wind. you were about to cry. and despite the fact that you were, you looked breathtaking, mark concluded.
“i-“ you stuttered, a teardrop you so desperately tried to keep in, finally fell onto your salty cheeks, “i d-don’t want,” you gasped out with a soft sob and furrowed your eyebrows in frustration. it was so hard to speak right now, you didn't want to look so pathetic on the day before he left, you didn't want to end the day on a bad note. but your aching heart said otherwise. mark felt a tug at his heartstrings as he watched you try your absolute best to talk. and for a moment, he saw you scrunch your nose before breathing out a shaky “i-i don’t want you to go.”
finally, you were able to corroborate a coherent sentence without sputtering over the tears that were streaming down your face like an endless river, your saltwater-tainted hands rubbing against your cheek. mark's face fell to one of relief, he thought it was something worse—he thought he something went wrong. he hurriedly tried to gently pry your hands away before any of it could reach your eyes.
“(y/n),” he cooed, “i’ll be back as soon as i can, promise.” going against what he just attempted to avoid, he held your face in his salty hands and cradled your cheeks with such care and love. amidst your blurry vision, you could make out, although not the best, of the look he had on his face. mark looked at you so tenderly—as if you were to break at any moment with how fragile you are, and it just fueled your wailing as you poured your heart out in his grasp.
while you continued to cry, mark pulled you into his arms. his heat radiating off you like you were hugging the sunset yourself. your hands clawed at his soaked t-shirt—desperate to find the solace you’ll always find within mark as your face nestled in the crook of his neck. he smelled salty, you thought to yourself, as the tears that once racked your body began to dissipate. and as you watched the sun slowly disappear further down the horizon, you felt mark place a kiss on the crown of your head, a gesture you've always loved no matter the situation you’re in. you pulled yourself away, albeit begrudgingly—from his warm embrace to look at him, still sniveling.
looking into his loving eyes, you felt the cool wind enveloped yours and mark's hugging figure, the sound of the breeze blowing against your bare skin. mark opened his lips to speak, inadvertently making you pry your eyes away from his.
“i'll come back home. wait for me, okay?"
you grinned a small smile, nose and cheeks still puffy and red, "don't keep me waiting for too long."
@ toshn , pls do not steal or ur cheeks will!! be clapped.

Hi hello!! For the fanfic snippet thing, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this bit of Olive Branch! Especially what's running through Bruce's head at the moment.
---
“I’m not scared of you,” Jason says. It’s very much a lie, and he shouldn’t have said it. After all, Bruce already knew he was angry, but now Jason brought in the idea of fear. And he knows Bruce caught the lie.
Bruce watches him, the bottom of his mouth drawn in like he has something right on the tip of his tongue.
“Spit it out.”
“Your…your scar.”
Jason laughs nervously. “I have a lot of those.”
“On your neck, Jason. The one on your neck.” Immediately, Jason’s hand clamps down on the side of his throat, as if trying to staunch the bleeding. “Was that me?”
Jason doesn’t trust himself to answer.
“It was an accident,” Bruce lies, because that has to be a lie, right? “You know it was an accident, right? I was compromised. I got distracted. It was an accident.”
Jason knows that it wasn’t. Bruce’s aim couldn’t have been that far off. He ran the angles in his mind a thousand times, even hacked into the security cams. Watched it over and over and over and over and over again until it was burned into his memory. The Joker moved to the left, throwing Jason slightly to the right. The Batarang flew past his head on the right, too far from any target for Bruce to have been going for a direct shot. And the rebound…the rebound hit Jason across his neck, tearing a gash from the back left to the front left. If Jason hadn’t been thrown sideways, it would have hit him in the back of his neck and with the force of the Batarang— “Okay,” Jason lies right back, “I believe you.”
“You don’t,” Bruce says, voice hollow. “Jason, I was aiming for the gun. It was an accident. I swear—”
“I believe you,” Jason repeats. It’s all he can really do. Batman doesn’t miss. Batman certainly doesn’t miss as wildly as Bruce is claiming he did. Bruce doesn’t care enough to have been that badly out of it. “Can we please focus?” He rasps out the words, mouth suddenly dry. He takes a sip of the coffee, hiding his face behind the mug, because apparently it’s safe. Probably safe. Maybe Jason gave Bruce the idea and he slipped something into it while Jason was out of it. He forces himself to take a sip of the coffee anyway. He’s fucking pathetic. If Bruce wanted to capture him right now, he could do it easily.
Thank you! I loved writing this fic so I’m super excited to talk about it!
So this is near the end of Olive Branch, where Jason post-Batarang agrees to meet with Bruce for what he thinks is basically a negotiated surrender. Bruce, on the other hand, thinks he’s meeting in a cafe with his son to try to recover their relationship. And he has no idea how much he freaked Jason out with the batarang incident.
Shortly prior to this, Jason had a panic attack because he thought Bruce put something in his drink. Depending on your version of canon, Bruce has trauma related to this, so that’s already like a “my son thinks I’m a monster” moment. Add onto that the fact that Jason just revealed that he only thinks this is a negotiation…
Well, Bruce is crushed. He genuinely thought that after their confrontation, Jason had calmed down and was ready to just have a conversation. Bruce misses him so much—he was desperate to talk to Jason, to the point where he tried not to even talk about Jason’s killing and already made a huge concession shortly before the panic attack.
At this point, Bruce has realized Jason hates him and is only here for business. And he doesn’t understand, but…he knows he can put his foot in his mouth and doesn’t want to spook Jason off, so he offers to talk through an intermediary. If he ruins this now, he could lose his chance to ever talk to Jason again. But if he backs away, then maybe he can have Jason home again, sometime in the future.
“I’m not scared of you,” Jason says. It’s very much a lie, and he shouldn’t have said it. After all, Bruce already knew he was angry, but now Jason brought in the idea of fear. And he knows Bruce caught the lie.
Jason’s reasoning, while incredibly unreliable throughout this fic, is actually spot on here. Bruce had been trying to figure out what was going on in Jason’s head—if he was still so angry, why’s he willing to negotiate? But if he’s not angry, then why is he assuming such terrible things of Bruce?
And then Jason lies about not being scared of Bruce and the question becomes: Why would he think Bruce would hurt him?
(I imagine that Bruce has watched footage of the confrontation over and over again. He knows he hit Jason with the batarang, but due to the angles, he doesn’t know exactly where he hit, how bad it was, etc. All he knows is that he threw it and then Jason fell to the ground, bleeding. He’s been telling himself that it must’ve just grazed Jason, that he can’t have hurt him thatbadly because he seems fine, right?)
Bruce watches him, the bottom of his mouth drawn in like he has something right on the tip of his tongue. “Spit it out.” “Your…your scar.” Jason laughs nervously. “I have a lot of those.” “On your neck, Jason. The one on your neck.” Immediately, Jason’s hand clamps down on the side of his throat, as if trying to staunch the bleeding. “Was that me?”
Bruce had been wondering this since he spotted the scar, but only now does he allow himself to actually consider the possibility. He really doesn’t want to ask it. If you’re working with a live bomb that could go off at any moment, you don’t want to poke it. And he doesn't want to think about what it would mean if the answer is "yes," because a cut there deep enough to scar that badly could easily have been lethal. But he also has to know how badly he hurt his son.
(The second Jason deflects, Bruce knows.)
Jason doesn’t trust himself to answer. “It was an accident,” Bruce lies, because that has to be a lie, right? “You know it was an accident, right? I was compromised. I got distracted. It was an accident.”
Bruce isn’t actually lying here. (In my intent—obviously others can interpret the fic how they want.) But what he’s saying is extremely unbelievable because:
I actually did look at the angles a while ago while trying to determine the feasibility that this was an accident. It looks like Jason does get thrown to the right, and the batarang still misses him on the first pass, only hitting him on the rebound. Meanwhile, Jason is holding the gun in his right hand. There’s no way Bruce was aiming for the gun or the Joker—not unless he was so emotionally compromised that his aim was really, really bad.
So, there are three interpretations here:
Bruce was aiming to rebound the Batarang into Jason’s neck. He was either slightly off (and it hit because the Joker, predictably, threw himself sideways) or he was going for a potentially lethal shot to the back of the neck. Jason and the Joker both believe this one.
Bruce was so distracted that he really messed up the angle. He was either going for the gun or the Joker, and missed horribly. This is what actually happened in this fic.
Bruce was aiming for a non-lethal shot to the backof Jason’s neck. To my understanding, this region is better protected by bones than the rest of the neck, so with comic book science, maybe Jason would have been temporarily unable to lift his head, but would have survived and recovered. Still, it’s incredibly risky. I think there’s a decent chance that comics!Bruce did this.
(There’s a possibility that, despite how it appears, Jason wasn’t actually thrown to the side. In this case, Bruce missing an attempt to hit the rebound into the gun and hitting Jason’s neck instead is a bit more likely.)
(I am not an expert in thrown weapons, so take this analysis with a pillar of salt, of course.)
“You don’t,” Bruce says, voice hollow. “Jason, I was aiming for the gun. It was an accident. I swear—”
Bruce is truly desperate here. Jason genuinely believes that Bruce took a kill-shot at him.
Telling Jason isn’t an accident isn’t going to help. It 100% sounds like someone trying to make last-minute lying justifications. Like “I didn’t mean to hit you!” etc.
And part of that is because I believe Bruce doesn’t actually know what happened. He had lost every ounce of his control (and we know Bruce has serious control issues) over the situation. So, he threw, and his mind was either blank or his memory of his reasoning is just completely gone. But the details of that moment are just consumed by panic. He knows that he wasn’t aiming for Jason’s neck—knows he would never do that—but he also doesn’t exactly know what he was aiming for instead. And that makes his justifications sound much weaker. (It's also why he missed so badly—he absolutely wasn't thinking straight in that moment.)
With Bruce’s control issues, he really struggles to just move on. He needs Jason to know that he didn’t mean to. It’s essential. It matters more than anything else. Jason holds an incorrect belief about Bruce’s love for him, and Bruce needs to correct it.
Meanwhile, Jason is completely panicking. He’s in “placate and diffuse” mode—the fawn in the fight-flight-freeze-fawn reflex. And he completely discounts the possibility of the truth, because he doesn’t think Bruce cares about him enough to be so emotionally compromised that he missed that badly. The solution here, obviously, is that Bruce does care enough that he was that emotionally compromised.
Immediately after this snippet, Jason’s fear shows itself again, which jerks Bruce out of his (kind of self-centered) need to clarify. He just totally gives up on that part of the conversation and sort of steps back emotionally for the rest.
