In Case you Missed our Previous Announcement: Costume College 2020 is rescheduled to 2021! Good morning all! As soon as we know the new dates, we will let you know so you can all begin planning. The Hotel Liaison(s) will be meeting with our Hotel in the near future to discuss dates so we will hopefully have those to you soon. In the meantime, there have been a lot of questions since the postponement notice went out regarding the Limited Attendance Classes. Please note that we have closed the Limited Attendance Selection Form on Sunday (4/19/20), and that all your selections for 2020 will NOT count for 2021. The situation is very fluid, and we can't make any kind of accurate predictions at this point regarding how many teachers will be returning for 2021, will they still be teaching the same classes, and will they still be available at the same dates/times. As well, the student population could change drastically. As a result, we will be starting the form anew in 2021. (But don't worry, all the selections will be randomized as usual, so your requests will still have as fair and equal chance as getting your classes as you would have in 2020!) If you have questions about your Membership Ticket purchase (or Gala or Tea Tickets) or Hotel Reservations please read the full announcement from the Costumer's Guild West, Inc. that was posted on our Website. If you are registered for 2020, you should have also received the same information from an email through our MSI program. Full Announcement from the Costumer's Guild West, Inc. Board of Directors from Sunday 4/19/2020 on our website: http://www.costumecollege.net/message-from-the-costumer's-guild-west-president-regarding-costume-college-2020 Thank you for your patience as we all work through this challenging situation together. With the outbreak of COVID-19, many companies and organizers have postponed,  rescheduled or even cancelled public events. Due to laws and advisories from governments and public health organizations banning social gatherings of people so that various regional, national and international events such as sporting events, concerts, conferences, etc. do not take place on time.

POSTPONE. Don't cancel. I'd like to encourage the event industry, especially my fellow planners, to encourage clients to postpone their events rather than cancel. Delaying revenue vs losing it completely can help stop more event industry businesses from shuttering and from people losing their jobs. TAKE ACTION: Call your news outlets and make your story known. The more awareness the more attention and funding! Cruise lines & airlines are not the only hospitality businesses at risk. COVID-19 checklist for businesses: How to manage your online presence and keep customers updated in a time of crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic means that pretty much nothing is business as usual. Customers are concerned about how businesses are adapting to the situation — wondering if you’re open, have product available, if those products are safe, etc. There are several steps you should be taking now to ensure your customers can get answers when they’re searching online.
Local business listings
For local businesses, often it’s a directory listing, not your website if you have one, that’s the first thing your customers will see in Search. Be sure to update your Google My Business listings to highlight how your business operations have changed during this time.
“Businesses need to work on modifying their store hours on their key profiles (like GMB [Google My Business] and Yelp) as well as their messaging regarding what they’re doing about COVID-19 via Posts or descriptions in their GMB profile,” Dan Leibson, VP of search for Local SEO Guide, told Search Engine Land.
Review your listings across Google My Business, Bing Places as well as other directories such as Yelp and TripAdvisor where customers find you. And don’t forget about social, too. Update your Facebook page and other social profiles.
Tumblr media
Homemade Alameda‘s Yelp business description, which was updated to address health concerns during the coronavirus outbreak.
The example above emphasizes the business’ delivery service and assures customers that they don’t have to engage in any unwanted contact.
Update hours and temporary closures. Google has deployed its AI assistant, Duplex, to confirm business hours so that they’re accurate within Maps and Search. However, you don’t have to wait for Google to get in contact with you: you can manually update your hours of operation, or even list your business as temporarily closed, through Google My Business.
Create local Posts. GMB listing owners and managers can create Google Posts to keep customers informed on the status of their business. These posts can show up in Search and Maps and are live for seven days, but can be extended to 14 days. Posting at regular intervals will make customers more confident that the information they’re seeing is still relevant.
Your business site
FAQ pages. Many brands, and especially local businesses such as restaurants, need to address common questions regarding how their business practices are adapting to restrictions due to COVID-19.
For example, FAQ sections might detail who comes into contact with your products, how your workflow has changed to emphasize safety and policy changes regarding existing purchases. The FAQ section is also a good place to explain any changes in your offerings or expected fulfillment delays.
Dedicated pages for COVID-19. For businesses that are significantly impacted by the crisis, it may be necessary to explain how you’re adapting on a dedicated page or right on your homepage. Larger brands can also use the media/PR sections of their site for this purpose. In your statement, outline the situation for your customers and keep this information up-to-date.
Structured data and product feeds
Product availability. For retailers, be sure your item availability status is updated in as close to real-time as possible as consumer demand changes. That includes product schema on your product pages and in your product feeds.
The ItemAvailability structured data type is used to indicate whether a product is InStock, OutofStock, Discontinued, has LimitedAvailability, is available InStoreOnly, OnlineOnly and more.
Event status. Event organizers can set the eventStatus markup property to EventCancelled or EventPostponed on their pages. Google advises that organizers maintain the original startDate until the new date is confirmed. After you’ve rescheduled, you can update the startDate and endDate and mark the eventStatus field as eventRescheduled.
Now-virtual events. For events that have moved from in-person to online, use VirtualLocation as the location type and set the eventAttendanceMode to OnlineEventAttendanceMode.
Special announcements. The SpecialAnnouncement type was motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic and created with organizations such as schools, healthcare providers, pharmacies, police, local government and community groups in mind. It allows for date-stamped textual updates with contextualized web links to associate the announcement with a situation, such as the COVID-19 outbreak.

Update your cancelled or postponed events with Schema
Edwin Toonen
Edwin is a strategic content specialist. Before joining Yoast, he spent years honing his skill at The Netherlands’ leading web design magazine.
The outbreak of COVID-19 led to a wave of canceled or postponed events. Some events made the switch from an offline event to an online one. As everyone is scrambling to look up the latest information on events online, it is important to have all the latest details on your website. Search engines can pick up these details and post the correct information in the search results. New Event Schema helps speed up this process.
Events structured data expanded quickly
In last week’s release of Schema.org 7.0, you can find several updates to the Events structured data. You can give your event an eventStatus of EventCancelled when it’s cancelled or an EventPostponed when it’s been postponed. In addition, you can also set a rescheduled event as EventRescheduled.
A new option is available for events that moved online: you can now update the eventStatus to EventMovedOnline. Here, you can also mark events as online-only by setting the location to VirtualLocation and set the eventAttendenceMode to OnlineEventAttendanceMode.
An example for YoastCon 2020
We had a new edition of YoastCon planned for April, 2020. As everything else, we rescheduled that to a date later in the year. I thought I’d let you see how one of these additions could look in code.
Below, you can find a part of the Schema code found on the YoastCon page. I’ve added the eventStatus, plus the corresponding EventRescheduled property. Also, I’ve added the old, plus the new date. Now, search engines know this event was rescheduled to a new date and can update the listing accordingly.
{ "@type":"BusinessEvent", "@id":"https://yoast.com/yoastcon/#yoastcon", "mainEntityOfPage": { "@id": "https://yoast.com/yoastcon/#webpage" } , "name":"YoastCon", "description":"Due to the recent COVID-19 health concerns both locally and among our (international) speakers, we're sad to announce that we're postponing YoastCon 2020.", "organizer": { "@id": "https://yoast.com/#organization" } , "startDate":"2020-09-10T07:00:00+00:00", "endDate":"2020-09-10T07:00:00+00:00", "eventStatus": "https://schema.org/EventRescheduled", "eventAttendanceMode": "https://schema.org/OfflineEventAttendanceMode", "previousStartDate": "2020-04-21T19:00", "url":"https://yoast.com/yoastcon/", "image":"https://yoast.com/app/uploads/2019/10/YoastCon2020-600x338.png", "location": { "@type":"Place", "name":"Theater 't Moza\u00efek", "url":"https://www.mozaiekwijchen.nl/", "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "addressLocality": "Wijchen", "addressRegion": "Gelderland", "addressCountry": "The Netherlands", "postalCode": "6602 HX", "streetAddress": "Campuslaan 6" } }
Moving the event online
Many events now move to online-only, for the time being or completely. You can now let search engines know that the event has turned into an online event — or a mixed event with both an offline and an online component.
In the YoastCon example, I could move the event by adding an EventMovedOnline property, combined with a new VirtualLocation property with a link to the page where the event is happening online. Code is truncated.
"eventAttendanceMode": "https://schema.org/OnlineEventAttendanceMode", "eventStatus": [ "https://schema.org/EventRescheduled", "https://schema.org/EventMovedOnline" ], "previousStartDate": "2020-04-22T19:00", "location": { "@type": "VirtualLocation", "url": "https://yoast.com/yoastcon/"
Of course, you can combine both online and offline locations of the event. Simply add the MixedEventAttendanceMode to the eventAttendanceMode and set both a virtual as well as a real location for the event. This might look something like this:
"eventAttendanceMode": "https://schema.org/MixedEventAttendanceMode", "eventStatus": "https://schema.org/EventScheduled", "location": [{ "@type": "VirtualLocation", "url": "https://yoast.com/yoastcon/" }, { "@type":"Place", "name":"Theater 't Moza\u00efek", "url":"https://www.mozaiekwijchen.nl/", "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "addressLocality": "Wijchen", "addressRegion": "Gelderland", "addressCountry": "The Netherlands", "postalCode": "6602 HX", "streetAddress": "Campuslaan 6" } }]
Google has a special page in on its developer website describing how to get your event in the search results correctly.
SpecialAnnouncement for broadcasting announcements
The new SpecialAnnouncement type lets governments announce important happenings, like the closing of businesses and public recreation areas. While the initial offering is focused entirely on the spread special announcements during the Coronavirus pandemic, this will be extended at a further date. Both Bing and Google accept SpecialAnnouncement and will highlight these pages in the results how they see fit. You can find more information on SpecialAnnouncement on Schema.org/SpecialAnnouncement.
We’re working on this as well
As you see, it makes a lot of sense to add this to your event pages. Unfortunately, at the moment Yoast SEO doesn’t have to option to add this code automatically. We’re working on that, though! Our structured data content blocks already let you build great FAQ pages and how-to articles, but we’re also working on blocks for events and recipes, among other things. In a while, you can add events and mark these as online, offline or mixed, while the correct structured data will be applied automatically.
Other things you can do to get provide accurate and up-to-date information
In the current COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic, it is crucial to give people accurate information about your event or business. A lot things have changed, many people sit indoor and have to go online to find out which businesses they can still visit or which events take place when. So, please take a moment to bring all your listings up-to-date.
Please check your listings on Google My Business, Bing Places, Yelp, TripAdvisor et cetera. Also update your social media channels like Facebook and Twitter. In addition, it might be a good idea to put a COVID-19 related FAQ page on your website answering the most pressing questions on how your business or event is handling this crisis. The Yoast SEO FAQ content block helps you make such a page in an instant. It also automatically adds valid structured data that makes sure the FAQ shows up in Google. Use it to your advantage.
Also, make sure to read Google’s documentation on how to pause your business online in search during this crisis.
Stay indoors. Stay safe!

{ "@type":"BusinessEvent", "@id":"https://yoast.com/yoastcon/#yoastcon", "mainEntityOfPage": { "@id": "https://yoast.com/yoastcon/#webpage" } , "name":"YoastCon", "description":"Due to the recent COVID-19 health concerns both locally and among our (international) speakers, we're sad to announce that we're postponing YoastCon 2020.", "organizer": { "@id": "https://yoast.com/#organization" } , "startDate":"2020-09-10T07:00:00+00:00", "endDate":"2020-09-10T07:00:00+00:00", "eventStatus": "https://schema.org/EventRescheduled", "eventAttendanceMode": "https://schema.org/OfflineEventAttendanceMode", "previousStartDate": "2020-04-21T19:00", "url":"https://yoast.com/yoastcon/", "image":"https://yoast.com/app/uploads/2019/10/YoastCon2020-600x338.png", "location": { "@type":"Place", "name":"Theater 't Moza\u00efek", "url":"https://www.mozaiekwijchen.nl/", "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "addressLocality": "Wijchen", "addressRegion": "Gelderland", "addressCountry": "The Netherlands", "postalCode": "6602 HX", "streetAddress": "Campuslaan 6" } }
"eventAttendanceMode": "https://schema.org/OnlineEventAttendanceMode", "eventStatus": [ "https://schema.org/EventRescheduled", "https://schema.org/EventMovedOnline" ], "previousStartDate": "2020-04-22T19:00", "location": { "@type": "VirtualLocation", "url": "https://yoast.com/yoastcon/"
Of course, you can combine both online and offline locations of the event. Simply add the MixedEventAttendanceMode to the eventAttendanceMode and set both a virtual as well as a real location for the event. This might look something like this:
"eventAttendanceMode": "https://schema.org/MixedEventAttendanceMode", "eventStatus": "https://schema.org/EventScheduled", "location": [{ "@type": "VirtualLocation", "url": "https://yoast.com/yoastcon/" }, { "@type":"Place", "name":"Theater 't Moza\u00efek", "url":"https://www.mozaiekwijchen.nl/", "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "addressLocality": "Wijchen", "addressRegion": "Gelderland", "addressCountry": "The Netherlands", "postalCode": "6602 HX", "streetAddress": "Campuslaan 6" } }]

Our structured data content blocks already let you build great FAQ pages and how-to articles, but we’re also working on blocks for events and recipes, among other things. In a while, you can add events and mark these as online, offline or mixed, while the correct structured data will be applied automatically.

A lot things have changed, many people sit indoor and have to go online to find out which businesses they can still visit or which events take place when. So, please take a moment to bring all your listings up-to-date.
