a mask is donned and one loses themselves.
easter passes with little applause, the children in town taking part in the year easter egg hunt across town. the adults look forward, more, to the event announced at the weekend's end.
jonathan mackenzie, director of the prince of maldonia theatre corps, announces a gala to raise funds for the upcoming musical. he claims it will be one better than any year before, and the title will be released on the night of - where a signup list for auditions will be posted. as with all things in the theatre - there will be an air of mystery for the event as the theme is announced as a masquerade.
the night comes quickly, and all who wish to attend flock to the emerald city art gallery - the venue for the gathering. tickets are $20 a person, with drinks being an additional charge throughout the evening, but the night is sure to have great entertainment and excitement, as even for a fundraiser the mackenzies have left no expense spared.
the masquerade proves to flicker pointed memories for many, as the memory of the masked ball that had marked king midas's 20th year of reign. six months before the curse swept across the enchanted forest, he'd invited all those across the lands - his only rule that all magic be left at the door. to enforce this, he had a spell made to ensure no magic could be used within the ballrooms.
with that we announce our second official event - or rather events! threads can take place either at midas's masquerade ( tagged ef.midasmask ) or the charity masquerade ( tagged ef.musicalmask ). any threads from previous event should now be dropped, unless pre-plotted, in which case we ask you begin to finish those up.
the fundraiser masquerade event takes place april 15th, but both events ic will run from april 10 - 26 ( based upon interest ). we'd love to see edits of your muses' costumes for both!

Trendy Options for Ombre Nails for Any Occasion
Ombre nails have become a popular and versatile trend in the world of nail art. With their seamless transition of colors, they offer endless possibilities for both bold and subtle designs.
Whether you're attending a wedding, heading to a party, or looking for a professional yet trendy look, ombre nails are adaptable to suit any occasion. Here are some trendy ombre nail options you can try, with ideas for every event.
1. Classic Nude to White Ombre
A timeless and elegant choice, nude to white ombre nails are perfect for formal events like weddings, galas, or professional settings.
The soft gradient creates a sophisticated, understated look that pairs well with any outfit. You can also add a little twist by incorporating a thin glitter line along the tip for extra sparkle, or adding tiny rhinestones near the cuticle for a touch of glam.
Occasions: Weddings, Corporate Events, Formal Dinners, Everyday Wear Ideal for: Professional environments, Minimalistic style lovers
2. Bold Sunset Ombre
For a more daring and vibrant look, the sunset ombre blends warm hues like orange, pink, and yellow. This eye-catching design is perfect for summer parties, festivals, or any occasion where you want to stand out. The colors evoke a feeling of warmth and fun, making them ideal for a day at the beach or a sunset celebration. You can play with different shades or incorporate metallics for added flair.
Occasions: Summer parties, Beach trips, Music Festivals, Vacation Ideal for: Trendsetters, Bold personalities
3. Pastel Ombre for Soft Vibes
Pastel ombre nails are all about soft, dreamy shades, transitioning from one pastel color to another. Whether it's lavender fading into mint green, or baby pink blending into sky blue, pastel ombre nails are perfect for springtime or baby showers. Their light and airy feel make them suitable for events that call for a delicate touch without being too flashy.
Occasions: Baby Showers, Spring Weddings, Garden Parties, Easter Brunch Ideal for: Soft, feminine looks, Romantic occasions
4. Glitter Ombre for Extra Sparkle
Glitter ombre nails add a touch of magic to any occasion. Starting with a solid base color, the glitter gradually fades toward the tips of the nails, creating a mesmerizing effect. Whether you choose gold, silver, or holographic glitter, this ombre design is perfect for adding a little extra sparkle to your look. It's ideal for celebrations, holidays, and evening events, where you want your nails to shine just as much as your outfit.
Occasions: New Year's Eve, Christmas, Birthday Parties, Evening Events Ideal for: Glam lovers, Party goers
5. French Tip Ombre
A modern twist on the classic French manicure, the French tip ombre gives a fresh and fashionable update. Instead of stark white tips, this design uses a gradient effect where the nail transitions from a nude base to a soft white or even pastel shade at the tip. It's the perfect option for someone who loves the timeless French look but wants something more unique and trendy.
Occasions: Bridal Showers, Engagement Parties, Business Meetings, Date Nights Ideal for: Classic style lovers looking for a twist, Romantic occasions
6. Dark Ombre for Edgy Elegance
Dark ombre nails, where colors like deep burgundy, navy, and charcoal fade into black tips, offer a bold, edgy vibe. This style is perfect for evening events, holiday parties, or nights out. You can even incorporate a matte finish for an extra edgy feel, or add a touch of gold or silver accents to elevate the look.
Occasions: Nightclubs, Holiday Parties, Cocktail Events, Evening Dinners Ideal for: Fashion-forward individuals, Lovers of dramatic style
7. Neon Ombre for Fun and Funky Looks
Neon ombre nails are all about making a statement. Bright, electric colors like neon pink, green, blue, and yellow are blended into each other for an eye-popping effect. This fun and funky design is ideal for clubbing, beach parties, or any occasion where you want your nails to be a conversation starter.
Occasions: Club Nights, Pool Parties, Concerts, Birthday Celebrations Ideal for: Bold and adventurous style seekers
8. Metallic Ombre for Luxe Vibes
For a high-fashion look that screams luxury, metallic ombre nails are a must-try. Gold, silver, and bronze shades gradually fade into each other for an elegant and shiny finish. Whether you opt for a matte or glossy topcoat, this nail trend is perfect for sophisticated evenings or upscale events. Pair these nails with a chic outfit, and you're ready to turn heads.
Occasions: Luxury Events, Black Tie Affairs, Gala Dinners, Fashion Shows Ideal for: Glamorous occasions, Luxe style lovers
9. Floral Ombre Nails
Floral ombre designs take the gradient effect to the next level by combining it with delicate flower patterns. Starting with a soft gradient, small floral designs in subtle hues or bold colors can be added to give the nails a whimsical feel. These nails are perfect for outdoor events, weddings, or any occasion where you want to showcase your feminine side.
Occasions: Garden Weddings, Outdoor Parties, Spring Festivals, Mother’s Day Ideal for: Romantic souls, Nature lovers
10. Matte Ombre Nails
Matte nails offer a chic and contemporary look. With the ombre effect, you can create a smooth and velvety transition from one color to the next, all without the glossy shine. Matte ombre nails are perfect for anyone who loves minimalism or prefers a more subtle and modern style. Choose soft neutrals, or make a statement with dark shades like charcoal, burgundy, or forest green.
Occasions: Fashion events, Casual Day Out, Office Settings Ideal for: Modern minimalist style, Those who prefer understated elegance
Conclusion
Ombre nails are a flexible and on-trend way to express your personal style, no matter the occasion. From bold and vibrant hues to soft and sophisticated transitions, there’s an ombre design to fit every mood and event.

This is Not a Performance
Irving H Bolano’s incredible repurposed newspaper fashion for the Met Gala Challenge on Twitter #HFMetGala2020
May the Fourth be With You as you reach the next chapter of this current sci-fi drama we seem to be living through. As the saying goes, reality can be stranger than fiction. But it just happens to be a many red-eyed virus rather than an evil, black-masked father that we’re fighting as we all walk around like Storm Troopers.
There are so many aspects of our lives, during Covid, which make it feel like we are actors in a make-believe story. First of all, we’ve all become movie stars, with our faces, homes, and even pets showcased on our own silver screens. As isolated as we are, our private lives now play out in the public sphere more than ever - no paparazzi required. For some, this invasion of privacy is unwelcomed. But for many people, it satisfies a secret longing to share themselves with a wider audience. After all, deep down, everyone wants to be seen and heard (I guess, me included, since I have this blog, after all). It’s why TikTok and YouTube and Facebook have become multi-billion dollar companies so quickly. And now, while this pandemic is a harsh daily reminder of the impermanence of all things, it makes sense that these digital missives are an attempt to seek immortality, in some strange way.
As someone whose work responds to human’s need to have a voice, I truly get why this is the case. And I love that this time has turned housewives into opera stars, and health care workers into hip hop dancers, and housepets into circus performers. But, at the same time, I have become very aware of the masks that we wear, even inside our homes, to portray a certain self to the world that may stray quite far from our authentic selves. The expression “dance like no one is watching” acknowledges the fact that we all tend to perform when we have an audience, and perhaps we’re only truly ourselves when we don’t. I understand that the way we “perform” ourselves online gives each of us a chance to reinvent the fictions we want our stories to have. So, while I surely take some guilty pleasure from intimate glimpses into strangers’ lives, I also do so with a certain skepticism about the veracity of what I’m seeing.
This became particularly true for me when I received a recent link from my friend and amazing singer/songwriter, Dominique Fricot. Capitalizing on this current trend of oversharing, he cleverly asked his fans to film their morning routines for the music video of his new song, Wake Up, by his duo, Flora Falls. Dom’s warm tenor voice blended with his partner’s breathy tones feel just like a lazy morning in bed. But I’ll leave it up to you to decide just how accurate these portrayals of people’s idyllic daytime rituals actually are.

Homeschool Heroes
About twenty years ago, I was invited to adjudicate a youth music competition in the Yukon. Travelling to one of the northernmost inhabited spots on earth, I imagined that my greatest surprise might have been a polar bear or Northern Lights sighting. But it turned out to be something entirely different. Among the 25,000 residents of the thriving metropolis of Whitehorse exists a treasure trove of talent. I could not believe the incredibly honed skills and nuanced expression with which these 11-18 year-olds played. Wondering why, I developed a theory that I now call SLoW: Sheltered Living Wonder. When long, dark days, cold climates or pandemics force people indoors, they tend to spend inordinate amounts of time on creative endeavors and skill development. In other words, they slow down and take time for wonder.
This theory has surely applied during these past few months of sheltering in place. One of the most remarkable examples has been the inventiveness that many of my friends have brought to their first attempts with homeschooling. So, I wanted to give a few shout outs to some of these Homeschool Heroes and the highly imaginative projects they’ve done with their kids.
Stunning Easter Eggs made from natural materials and dye, by my friend Jane Cox and her kids (Botany lesson)
Candy Covid virus, made by Amelia, my friend Jen Sanke’s daughter, as she learned about the virus’ proteins (Biology lesson)
But perhaps the prize for most complex homeschool project has to go to my architect friend, Bryn Davidson, who upon returning from Australia, in late March, had to fully quarantine for 2-weeks. So, with his 5-year old son Bei as helper, this Physics lesson allowed him to enjoy home delivery beer while in isolation. Just brilliant!

Living in livestream
So today, 5 million British Columbian’s awaited our “sentence” with baited breath, as word spread that our provincial prime minister would deliver the Re-Open BC plan at 3 pm. I have to admit, it felt a bit like when you were “grounded” as an adolescent and then your parents returned certain privileges to you. Of course, I’m well aware that our province has already been far more licentious than many places around the globe. We’ve been fortunate to maintain reasonably low numbers of infection (just over 2,000), with counts as low as 8 new cases per day, at this point. So, while our provincial parks closed, our beaches never did. While we were encouraged, within a reasonable range of home, to be active outdoors, we were not restricted to walks only within the 100 metre radius of our house, as my Israeli friends were. And while we could still shop at gardening and furniture stores, to make sheltering at home more enjoyable, New Zealanders had nothing but grocery stores and pharmacies open, for two months.
I have sensed the gratitude my fellow Vancouverites have felt about these privileges. But that does not mean that we aren’t still anxious to return to other aspects of living which we’ve missed. When lockdown began, ominously on the Ides of March (the 15th), I’d harboured a secret hope that certain restrictions might be lifted on my birthday (exactly two months later). And it turns out that Phase Two of the BC ReOpen plan will commence on May 19th, just 4 days later than I’d hoped. What I most look forward to experiencing again are small gatherings with friends, (we’ll soon be allowed to socialize in public with up to 10 people); meals inside certain restaurants and pubs (those that are able to function within WorkPlace BC’s safety regulations); visits to registered massage therapists; and hugs with select people, (”using one’s own ‘risk assessment’.”)
But in the long-range plan, the harsh reality for artists has been laid out, as Phase Four (which includes resuming large-venue concerts, conventions, and international travel) can not occur until either a vaccine has been developed, an effective treatment plan is widely available, or herd immunity is achieved. And this is not estimated to occur until mid-2021 or later. So, the prospects are still bleak for symphony orchestras, opera and dance companies, artists who perform in crowded bars, or musicians who travel for arena shows and festivals. This likely means that in order to satisfy audiences’ need to access live performance, and for artists to continue to share their creativity, livestream formats will still have to persist for some time. Therefore, I thought I’d share a few regular weekly livestream arts events here, both from Vancouver, LA & NY.

Collateral Blessings
So many thoughtful writers are adding to the discourse, as we all strive to make meaning from what can feel like a senseliess time. I have so appreciated the abundance with which people are sharing these missives, right now. Every day, bursts of inspiration or flickers of insight come my way, thru texts, emails and Facebook. Like adventurers, traveling together thru the dark of night, we shine light on guideposts, anywhere we can find them, as we collectively quench each other’s thirst for wisdom.
One of the most profound writings I‘ve recently discovered came from a stranger’s blog. In The Examined Family, Courtney Martin, without ever diminishing the gravity of the havoc that this virus has wreaked, writes about some of the assets that have also come out of this time. New friendships with neighbors. A long-neglected puzzle completed with her kids. The time to draw and truly notice an artichoke in her back garden. My good friend Juan calls these collateral blessings. This reference to the accidental gifts that this cruel virus has given us, is a beautiful twist on “collateral damage”, a term coined to explain accidental friendly-fire deaths during the Gulf War. Commenting on the anticipatory nostalgia that she projects she will feel about certain things, once this time has passed, Courtney writes:
“I instantly feel overwhelmed at the prospect of schedules and stuff. I don’t want to go back to our former accumulation or frenetic pace. I don’t want to stop texting (my neighbor) my little triumphs. I don’t want to forget about the artichokes in the garden. I don’t ever want to forget this happened--the grief and the beauty of it. I’m not even sure that will be possible, but if it were, I wouldn’t want it. I don’t want to vote like it didn’t happen. I don’t want to eat like it didn’t happen. I don’t want to consume like it didn’t happen. I don’t want to schedule like it didn’t happen. I don’t want to mother or daughter or befriend or neighbor like it didn’t happen. I don’t want to sit inside this little life, noticing and appreciating and breathing, like it didn’t happen. There is unnecessary suffering all around me, and inside of me, too, but there is also necessary meaning. May we hold on to that.”
You can read her full entry here: https://courtney.substack.com/p/unnecessary-suffering-and-necessary?token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjo3OTg0NDcyLCJwb3N0X2lkIjozNzU1NDMsIl8iOiJCTnk2VyIsImlhdCI6MTU4NzA1MjgyMCwiZXhwIjoxNTg3MDU2NDIwLCJpc3MiOiJwdWItMjA5MjIiLCJzdWIiOiJwb3N0LXJlYWN0aW9uIn0.puI9NMne-783ypInpvTkJ96T237WcrTo2ItDhqlkMiY

Nostalgia
I’m rarely one prone to nostalgia. My childhood photo albums are in storage. I have no family heirlooms displayed in my home. My tendency is to revel in the present or dream about the future. But this pandemic has strangely turned me into a sentimental fool. Perhaps this return to simpler times, where we seldom shop, where we wander mostly by foot, or where we get to know our neighbors better, makes us long for the past in certain ways.
For me, I’ve honored this by resurrecting my daily teenage Twizzler habit - a candy I’ve rarely eaten since then, but that now feels so satisfying during my Netflix & Chill evenings (while watching films almost as old like Groundhog Day & Anchorman).
I’m also listening a lot to Old School Hip Hop, where the explative-free rhymes of the 90’s feel so strangely innocent. It’s refreshing to listen to these musicians spit verses that merely celebrate the joys of dance and rap, rather than ranting about gun violence and other societal ills. Run DMC It’s Tricky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-O5IHVhWj0) and Beastie Boys Body Movin’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvRBUw_Ls2o) happen to be personal favorites.
Last month, I was tickled by an old memory while planting a lilac bush in my backyard. I suddenly remembered a story about my college boyfriend, whom I hadn’t thought of in 30 years. Our relationship started a bit secretively, so as not to hurt his ex’s feelings. So, one May afternoon, we snuck away to a distant park that was hosting a Lilac Festival. Unfortunately, our ruse was quickly spoiled when a candid photo of our picnic under the purple blooms was plastered all over the front page of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle the next morning.
Another sweet memory returned in culinary form. Every Tuesday, for 7 years, my mother selflessly drove me an hour from home and back, for my flute lesson. And to break up the long drive, we regularly stopped at Bickford’s Pancake House for my favorite adolescent treat: breakfast for dinner. Their specialty was the Dutch Baby Apple. And I finally made my first homemade attempt at this deceptively easy delicacy, last Tuesday.
This has also been a time to return to bedtime stories (some I’ve read to friends’ kids, and others for adults to hear.) The Great Realisation by British performance artist, Tom Foolery, has been making the social media rounds. But in case you missed this touching tale that looks back on this time as if the tale is being told in a not-so-distant future, it’s a wistful story about some aspects of modern life that we may never long for in the future:

Epos Direct have launched a brand new Fashion Epos, which incorporates Epos Hardware, Fashion Epos Software & E-commerce Solutions helpful for Independent retailers with one shop or boutique or group of chain store. “It was our final shot at cash for the store earlier than the carnival picked up,” he mentioned. Men's Bags: This merchandise has grow to be more and more common throughout the final decade with trendy designs. But final spring, just earlier than Easter, Ohio began to shut down. The elder Pococks bought into the enterprise in 1968 with a French waffle truck Al took to festivals and festivals for summer employment during faculty. The Theyyam dance is carried out during the festivals of the shrines. One of the essential Hindu shrines in Mysore is Chamundi Hills and there's a famend Nandi statue situated at this level. One of many issues that stays with you. We know that typically things change - it’s not a problem!
Over time, Harris obtained to know Carol and Al Pocock. Marcus Harris and Gary DeRemer are long-time customers of Mr. Fun’s. Marcus Harris, an IT skilled, began going to Mr. Fun’s as a toddler for the magic. Other well-liked malls embrace Terminal 21, which has sections themed after main cities; the boutiques , a smaller Siam Paragon; the Gaysorn Shopping Mall; the Siam Discovery, and the Platinum Fashion Mall, which focuses on apparel and accessories. Women tend to maintain it stylish by adorning themselves with equipment which full their get up by putting special emphasis on the gown and the embellishment. Created and presided by Francien Giraudi, alias Frankie the clown, in 1997, Les Enfants de Frankie has an objective to organize projects and pedagogic activities for ailing and underprivileged youngsters in Monaco and throughout the Provence and French Riviera region, better known as PACA. The association counts with a small but very dedicated staff, the board members, and with the help of more than 150 caring volunteers, plus 350 members, 200 donors and many loyal partners. Their projects go from organizing the participation of ailing and underprivileged children in sports events like the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, AS Monaco football matches, the International Monaco Jumping Competition, the Herculis Athletic competition; or cultural events in the Principality like visits to the Oceanographic Museum, the Exotic Garden, the International TV Festival, as well as playful outings like Easter Egg Hunting and much more. Given it’s a Jurassic movie, of course everything goes horribly wrong. Meanwhile, the two also stumble on a conspiracy that endangers everyone. The film, directed by J.A. Bayona, also has a cameo role for Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm, who was in two movies of the original trilogy.

22. Venom Release date: October 5, 2018
Sony kickstarts its own Marvel Universe with Tom Hardy playing the titular anti-hero, who confessed that he’s a huge fan of the character. Though the film will share the world of Spider-Man: Homecoming, which prominently featured Iron Man, Venom won’t have any connection to other Marvel movies. Have fun figuring that out. Sony has brought together an interesting cast though, with Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, and Riz Ahmed all attached. Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) directs.
23. First Man Release date: October 12, 2018
Damien Chazelle’s work with La La Land and Whiplash has made him a name to watch, and his next film is his most ambitious yet: a biography of Neil Armstrong and NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on the years 1961-69. Ryan Gosling stars as Armstrong, alongside Claire Foy as his first wife, Corey Stoll as Buzz Aldrin, Kyle Chandler as NASA’s first Chief of Astronaut Office Deke Slayton, and Jason Clarke as Ed White, the first American to walk in space.

It’ll be interesting to see how the film can separate itself, and not feel like a derivation so soon after Disney’s take.

25. X-Men: Dark Phoenix Release date: November 2, 2018
Following on from the disappointing Apocalypse in 2016, long-time X-Men producer Simon Kinberg takes over directing duties for this next adventure for Professor X (James McAvoy) and his fellow heroes, which is set a decade later, in the 1990s. Comic fans will remember the Dark Phoenix saga storyline, where Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) loses control of herself. Here, an alien shapeshifter – played by Jessica Chastain – is seeking to use her.
Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Evan Peters are all back too. Here’s hoping X-Men can get back on track.
26. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Release date: November 16, 2018
J.K. Rowling’s expanded Potterverse moves to Paris with the second chapter in the expected five films, which is centred on the rivalry between Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), who revealed himself to be hiding in disguise in the first film. Depp’s casting, and Rowling’s defence of his presence has attracted criticism in the wake of the social movement following Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault allegations, but it remains to be seen if that will affect the film’s profits.
Directed by Harry Potter veteran David Yates, The Crimes of Grindelwald will feature the return of Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, and Ezra Miller. Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander (Redmayne) to help stop Grindelwald’s plans.
27. Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 Release date: November 21, 2018

Sarah Silverman will return to voice Ralph’s best friend Vanellope von Schweetz, while Taraji P. Henson voices a trendy algorithm named Yesss. Mario might make an appearance as well.

History of Holiday Flowers: Get to Know Winter’s Most Famous Foliage!
{Source}
Sparkling lights on a towering pine tree, the winter season wouldn’t be complete without this iconic imagery, but it’s not just the Christmas tree that deserves some attention! Though the cold in many parts of the northern hemisphere means a period of dormancy for most plants and flowers, a few sturdy varieties not only endure but have become synonymous with the season. From ancient myths to modern traditions, here are some of the most popular seasonal decorations, and how you can incorporate them into your celebrations!
Crazy for Conifers
Conifer trees, often called evergreens, don’t lose their color or shed their leaves (or needles) in the winter. This makes them the perfect greenery for holiday festivities. Varieties of cypress, spruce, fir, and others can be found year round in abundance, and while these trees are the quintessential modern Christmas decoration, the tradition goes back thousands of years.
Ancient Celtic Druids saw evergreen trees as sacred objects that represented everlasting life. They used cuttings to decorate temples and perform rituals during the winter solstice. Ancient Egyptians recognized the trees as symbols of the Sun God, Ra, while the Romans similarly used boughs during the Winter Solstice celebration of Saturnalia. In the pagan traditions, the Winter Solstice was the end of that year’s harvest, so the trees that stayed green through winter were seen as a promise that crops would return again in the Spring. They symbolized new growth and fruitfulness.
The trees are a physical reminder of fortitude through the long winter, but also held spiritual meaning even before they became associated with the Christian holiday. The Vikings used wreaths and brought whole trees inside their homes for protection from evil spirits that they believed the cold brought on. The burning of logs from these pine trees eventually turned into the tradition we now know as the Yule Log.
Similar traditions by ancient tribes in what is now modern day Germany eventually turned into what we know as the Christmas Tree. German Christians adopted the tradition of bringing evergreens into their home and adorned them with apples, to symbolize the Garden of Eden, as well as other edible decorations like nuts and cookies. Eventually candles, angels, and other ornaments were added. The tradition of early Christmas Trees, first known as “Paradise Trees”, was brought with Germans as they began to emigrate to other parts of the world. It remained largely a foreign custom in their new lands and wasn’t until nearly 300 years later that it became a more universally accepted symbol of Christmas. Queen Victoria of England encouraged her husband Prince Albert to set up a tree at the palace in the way he had as a boy in Germany. The tree was featured in the London News and soon became a fashionable holiday accessory in Victorian Era Christmas celebrations. It was canonized further with depictions in popular literature including “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, and “The Night Before Christmas” by Clement Clarke Moore
Evergreen Tips! You can never go wrong with a little extra green. Add cuttings to holiday bouquets or arrangements for a boost of green filler and an iconic winter holiday feel. Varieties like Leyland Cedar, with soft leaves and long-lasting color, keep decorations vibrant throughout the season.

Berries for the Ball
Similar to pine trees, Holly keeps its luster throughout the winter season. It is also a popular adornment for Winter Solstice rituals and celebrations. Holly was considered the sacred plant of Saturn, the God of agriculture and time in Ancient Rome. It was a popular decoration during the festival of Saturnalia and often given as gifts in a wreath. Early Roman Christians were said to have put Holly leaves on their doors in order to avoid persecution, but as Christianity slowly gained dominance, Holly became associated with the celebration of Christ’s birth in December. European pagans also used Holly in decoration and even put sprigs in their hair. They believed the green leaves and bright red berries kept the earth beautiful during a time when other plants went away.
Mistletoe was another sacred plant to Ancient Druids. They believed that it could protect against thunder, lightning, and other evils. The cutting of mistletoe from the forest was a sacred event done by Druid Priests. People would then hang sprigs from their doorway for protection. Celtic peoples thought it had great healing powers, in fact the word mistletoe in the ancient Celtic language means, “all-heal”. It became a universal symbol of both protection and good luck for anyone who could possess it.
{Source}
The modern tradition of kissing under the mistletoe could possibly have been passed down from the Norse myth of Frigga, Goddess of Love. Frigga was the mother of Balder, the God of the Summer sun. The story goes, that after Balder had a dream about his death, Frigga became so frightened that she went to every element, plant, and animal on earth and asked them to make a promise not to harm her son. But the God Loki realized that she had forgotten the lowly mistletoe, and so fashioned an arrow with it on the tip. He gave it to the winter god, Hoder, who shot Balder in the heart. Frigga wept so bitterly that her tears became the white berries and eventually her love restored him. She was so overwhelmed with joy at his return that she kissed anyone who passed beneath the tree on which the berries grew.
It is easy to see how this story could be adopted to a Christian interpretation of life conquering death, as well as a flirtatious party game. The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe became popular in 18th Century England where it was often hung at balls. A girl standing under a ball of mistletoe could not refuse a kiss. If she remained unkissed it could be seen as a bad omen that she would not be married within the next year. Today, mistletoe remains a fun and flirty part of many holiday celebrations.
Get the Look!
True Mistletoe is actually a parasite on trees and does not have roots of its own. Try Snow White Hypericum Berries to get those magical white pearls. They make the perfect accent to wedding bouquets and centerpieces for extra romance and revelry!
Pepperberry is the perfect substitution for Holly paired alongside cut flowers in arrangements. It’s a green filler and a little extra pop of holiday cheer.
Poinsettias on Point
In most of North America, you can hardly walk out the door in December without tripping over a Poinsettia. Often given as gifts of live plants during Christmas, these unique plants have become a holiday staple.
Poinsettias are indigenous to Mexico and were originally used by the Aztecs for medicinal remedies and to make colorful red dye. It is known by many different names around the world including Flor de Noche Buena (Christmas Eve Flower) in Mexico and Guatemala; Flor de Pascua (Easter Flower) in Spain; and “The Crown of the Andes” in Chile and Peru. In North America, the name Poinsettia comes from the United States ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett, who sent the plant back to South Carolina and began propagating it in 1825. The association with Christmas began much earlier, however.
{Source}
The legend began in 16th century Mexico and tells of a poor little girl, sometimes referred to as Pepita or Maria, who had nothing to give as a gift for Jesus’s birthday. An angel appeared to her and told her to gather weeds from the roadside. When she brought them to the church altar, crimson blossoms sprouted from the weeds and became poinsettias. Franciscan friars in Mexico included the Poinsettia in Christmas decorations as early as the 17th century. The star-shaped leaf pattern was said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red color represented the blood of Jesus.
Paul Ecke Jr. is largely credited for bringing the Poinsettia into the North American consciousness during the Christmas season. His family was one of the first to sell and distribute the flower on a large scale in the 1900’s. He sent free plants to television studios for them to display during the holidays and even appeared himself on shows including The Tonight Show and Bob Hope’s Christmas Special to promote them. With the classic Christmas colors of red and green, it wasn’t long before the poinsettia was recognized as the ultimate Christmas flower. There is even a national Poinsettia Day, on December 12!
Festive Petals
Though Poinsettia plants do flower, the red blooms are actually colored leaves called bracts. Cyanthia, the small clusters of red, yellow, and green flowers can be found in the center surrounded by the red bracts.
Poinsettias are usually sold as potted plants so they can be hard to incorporate into a diverse arrangement. For a festive alternative, try Amaryllis. The shape of the petals mirror the star-shaped leaves and varieties of deep red and white make it a perfect centerpiece for holiday display. The Candy Cane Amaryllis, with its festive white and red combo, will add a little extra playfulness while still oozing elegance.
A Rose for Christmas
The Helleborus Niger, or Christmas Rose, gets its colloquial name from the fact that it is able to bloom in winter and has a similar holiday myth to that of the poinsettia. Native to Europe and Western Asia, the story goes that a young shepherd girl cried because she had nothing to give the baby Jesus. An angel appeared and brushed aside the snow on the ground to reveal the perfect blossoms of the Hellebore shimmering beneath.
These flowers are extremely hardy evergreen perennials. They can stand up to the cold and continue to bloom throughout the winter and early spring. With a variety of color from ivory to eggplant, hellebore is a great choice for both classic and modern styles.

Stunning flowers can add a dash of glamour and charm to a posh gala or a cozy gathering by the fire. Winter is an ideal time to dress up indoor spaces with life and color.

It has been recognized by the United Nations as an NGO (non-governmental organization) since 2008. They collaborates with hospitals, social services, and more than two hundred institutions that help underprivileged children.
Since its inception the association has assisted more than hundreds of thousands children in need. Even their office building rhymes with their objectives as it is housed in the “Golden Sun” (Le Soleil d’Or), with a team that works long hours so that ideas may turn into projects and ultimately become a reality, bringing smiles to the faces of thousands of suffering children.
The events are so many and varied that they issue a regular Newsletter called “The Little Journal of Frankie” with all the details to encourage children and their families to participate.
