Gold Coast Pride Festival is moving to a brand new home

The organisers of the Gold Coast Pride Festival have announced a move to bigger venue for their next Fair Day event in May, with expressions of interest now open.

Each year, the Gold Coast Pride Festival brings the community together at Surfers Paradise, with a lineup of events to kick off Pride Month celebrations.

The festival is back for a fifth year, with Fair Day on May 31, 2025. This year, the event is on the move.

“This year, we are moving the festival to the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre,” organiser Vince Siciliani told us.

At its new home, Fair Day will have room to spread out throughout the hall and parklands, with live events, market stalls, parties and events that day.

“This new venue allows us to utilise both the parkland adjacent to the centre and the indoor hall and foyer, providing a combined outdoor and indoor experience with a safe space in case of inclement weather,” Vince explained.

Expressions of interest for Fair Day market stallholders, food vendors and community groups are open now.

Gold Coast Pride

As well as Gold Coast Pride, the Gold Coast Rainbow Communities team also host regular LGBTQIA+ social events throughout the year.

This Saturday (January 25), they’re hosting a Rainbow Picnic at Evandale Park at HOTA from 11 am.

Brisbane Tritons bring home medals from Argentina

The LGBTQIA+ water polo team the Brisbane Tritons recently competed at the IGLA+ international meet in Argentina.

Each year, International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics+ (IGLA+) holds a meet for their member clubs to compete.

The 2024 event was hosted in Buenos Aires, Argentina which was a first for South America.

The event sees clubs compete in all aquatic sports including water polo, short-course swimming, open-water swimming, diving and artistic swimming.

Brisbane Tritons President Ash Monaghan said the event was a huge success in and out of the pool.

“After the initial culture shock and learning how important all of those hours spent doing Duo Lingo lessons were, the players had an amazing time,” he said.

“There is always a packed social calendar alongside the competition, with some of the team even marching in the Buenos Aires Pride Parade.”

In the pool, the Tritons competed in the Recreational Division with a team of six from Brisbane.

They were joined by members of other clubs from Argentina and the USA to fill out the ranks.

The collaboration paid off, earning the team a medal to bring back to Queensland.

“The team did exceptionally well making it through the qualification stage undefeated,” Ash said.

And after a tough final against Team New York, they came home with a well-deserved silver medal.”

About Brisbane Tritons

Brisbane Tritons has been part of the LGBTQIA+ sports community since 2015.

After starting with a dozen players there are now approximately 80 active members in South East Queensland.

This has been helped by The Wickham being a major sponsor for the past seven years.

Their season officially kicked off in September but they train all year round.

Locally, they compete in the Brisbane Social Water Polo Competition. The Tritons also compete in the Rainbow Cup against clubs from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth twice a year.

For those interested in joining the club, there are different ways to get involved.

“If you are new to the sport, then keep an eye out on our social media pages for the dates of our next Try-tons program,” Ash said.

“It is a program run over six weeks where our coach teaches participants the fundamental skills required to play water polo. The program culminates in a round-robin competition where we mix the new players in with the rest of the club, where they have an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned.”

2025 will be a big year for the club as they host the Rainbow Cup in April.

They will also compete at the State Titles on the Gold Coast and in Washington DC at the next IGLA+ meet.
