"you're not really going to take that with you, are you?" he asks—aloud, thanks to the device he's innovatively decided to strap to his wrist while human-shaped. his face is twisted in unmistakable horror. the that in question is more mold than he's ever seen in his life.

"where else is there to go? this is the only place i've been." he doesn't count where he was raised as a place, not like the city. it had only been a few buildings, not a real settlement. not intended for anyone to actually live there... anyone that wasn't an experiment, anyway. "you don't like being here?"

She could tell this guy wasn't good with conversation, like he had been stripped of being able to think like an average person from an early age, but she wouldn't judge - everyone had their own pace and she respected it. "Born and raised," she admitted, "wish I could say it's been fun living here but it's just easier than going somewhere else"

maybe most people wouldn't notice it, but adrian picks up on it right away. all throughout his little meandering comments, never once does he answer the question. it's a simple one. yes or no. neither word seems to find its way into his vocabulary. how interesting. for all seth's avoidance, it says much more that he refuses to answer than he could have ever voiced aloud. "just making conversation, that's all. current events. you don't like to keep up?" despite keeping his tone light, adrian fights with a scowl. "i just feel like i do more good out there than i could do in here, that's all. i don't have any particular affiliations."

Adrian asks another fairly-loaded question and Seth goes silent for a moment, simply watching his companion with his own raised eyebrow. He thinks he's settled in to a nice chat about interests or hobbies over drinks, and here he is getting grilled about his business practices. "What, is Sector 1 getting into journalism now?" Seth asks through a gravely chuckle, ashing his cigar right onto the floor. "Corruption... Oh baby, there's corruption everywhere, isn't there? You think you're better off trusting the Council? Or maybe you just feel a particular affiliation with Mr. Osei, huh?"

"no, not that long." it occurs to him, just now, that he doesn't know how long he's been here. ed isn't normally the type to measure anything, time included. regardless, when does living here actually start? when he was brought into the city, or after he had been released to wander around? does it matter? people ask all sorts of questions he doesn't particularly see the point of, but he tries to be polite all the same. "what about you?"

She could see the thoughts being processed right in front of her eyes and judging by his very unique appearance it was obvious that human contact was not natural for the other. But she wouldn't judge, she had managed to deal with Cyrus for years and his mini me daughter as well, she could handle anything at this point. "Why thank you," she smiled, a small shade of pink forming on her cheeks for a moment before shaking his hand. "I'm Scarlett, so have you lived here long?"

"...credentials?" he asks, face falling—as much as it can, given its make up. "i didn't know i needed any. what kind of stuff do i need to bring?" anxiously, fins wrings his hands against his chest, gills puffing against the sides of his neck. "i was just hoping i could, um... sign up. is that not how it works? i don't really know much about it. i would just really like to... learn things." he doesn't know if his pleas are falling on deaf ears or not—but there's only one person in the world he can be, himself, and for better or for worse, he opts for honesty.

“ T-thank you, ” Sebni heaved a sigh of relief at the shark person's reassurance, though he was still wary of them. After all, words don't always equal action. He's heard the same reassurance from an old flame before, that she wouldn't abandon or betray him, and then she did just that. People, even shark people, can disappoint you. “ Wait, enroll? ” His fear was replaced by confusion, an eyebrow raising at the shark person. They didn't look like a student. Were they a student? Damn, if this was a shark person student, then he could only imagine what a shark person graduate would look like. Probably even bigger, even scarier. “ What, uhm... Do you have your credentials with you? ”

max is startled when the creature turns, half-finished, and stares back at him with different eyes. familiar ones. horrible, sickeningly familiar ones. he brushes it off as a trick of the light, even as his stomach twists with uncertainty. he's not one to back down from anything, least of all the grotesque. "what, you want a better angle? you're lucky to get the one you've got," he scoffs, posturing—but he spins around, giving a good 360.

It taps its fingers along the bar top before turning away. With a quiet chuckle to itself, it begins with a little flair. Sliding fingers along its scalp, bleach blonde hair sprouts from its scalp. The nails stay and with a sharp flick out, the hair springs into the fluffed up, carefully style mess of Max's hair. Fingers begin prodding at it's face, sliding flesh around into the general shape of this stranger's face. Reaching the limits of it's memory, Roach turns to look over it's shoulder. The man's own eyes peaking back at him, even as it tries to hide the final surprise, "Turn a little to the left." It warbles, gleefully.

"so... you're not worried about it?" more than unwell, seth is striking him as irresponsible. if his team were being picked off by someone in the city, he would have sent them all into protective custody and busted down the doors of the capitol demanding action, if he had to! how many medical bills or funeral costs did he have to pay out before something other than profit margins entered his head? somehow that isn't the most bold display of the evening—no, that's the job offer. brow arched in surprise, all adrian can do is shake his head. and, well, decline. "i've got a good thing going where i'm at. never really been into the private businesses, anyway. heard there can be a lot of corruption in there."

Seth shrugs, relaxing back into his seat with a soft groan and stretching his legs out in front of him to cross at the ankles. Exceedingly casual about the whole conversation, mostly because if Seth is struggling, there's no way some stranger at a bar needs to know it: confidence, always, especially in the face of the public. "Business will do what business does, Mr. Walker, no matter what kind of crazy shit's going down. The client who's too much of a pussy to show up is replaced by two who come in just because of the headlines. Couple heavy medical bills here and there, no big deal, not in the grand scheme."

He takes a deep drag, holds the acrid smoke in his decaying lungs before letting it drift back out - through the haze Seth gives Adrian a once-over, a crooked grin pulling at a corner of his mouth. "So how about you, handsome? Ever thought about private security?"
