Verdant Vanilla
Well, here it is. The (not really) long awaited Finale, Part 3/3 of Neapolitan.
Hope you all enjoy this!! With this done I can finally move on to other works, but it’s been a blast writing a longer piece for you all.
Chaewon loves her job, she really does, but it doesn’t pay nearly enough for rent where she lives right now. Back when she was in college, where she was rooming with someone else, they were able to share the rent. Now however, her roommate is leaving to room with her girlfriend, that traitor, and Chaewon’s not sure what to do now. Chaewon shakes her head, that’s a problem for another time. Right now, she needs to book a train ticket back home. It’s been a while since she’s seen her parents and the 5 year class reunion is coming up. Might as well kill two birds with one stone eh? As she starts packing things for the trip, she notices a photo in a frame on her desk. In it, it was their last happy moment together, the three of them, before the dating debacle started between them.
Chaewon sighs, still regretting her impulse decision to kiss Hyunjin while drunk. She should’ve just kept her own feelings a secret and let the two fix their problems and be happy. She wonders where there are now, whether Heejin has managed to successfully get her degree in visual arts, or if Hyunjin is currently working as a veterinarian.
She misses them.. But she’s not really looking forward to meeting them again. Not looking forward to seeing them move on from her and find other people, for her to no longer be an important part of their lives. It’s her fault they seperated, she hurt them, her best friends, it’s only a fitting punishment for her to not be happy without them.
--- As she enters the hall, she’s greeted by the sight of a lot of her former classmates and friends already hanging out and mingling about. As she moves to talk with her friends from her theatre club, she notices that she can’t really seem to find the two girls in her mind anywhere, which is a bit surprising as they are often at the centre of parties due to their popularity.
As Chaewon takes a sip of wine, the first she’s had in years. All it does is bring back bitter memories, of a broken heart and broken promises to stick together. She sighs. It’s not like her to be distracted.. But when it comes to those two? They’ve always been special, that will never change, even if she can never have that again.
---
Back then, she’s never really needed other friends. Sure, she makes other friends anyway, a social butterfly, but she always returns to those two, her soulmates. However, she’s always felt a bit like an intruder. Sure, that feeling wasn’t that prominent after a few days, because Heejin and Hyunjin are wonderful, kind girls, yet she was the third in their friend group, and always will be.
Which was why it hurt more when the two started dating. She felt more like a three wheel, not that she wasn’t making things worse by removing herself from the two, yet she couldn’t help the aching feeling in her heart every time she saw the two. She hated herself for not being happy for them. She only realized afterwards, when she’s in college and their friendship has shattered, that it was because she liked them both, so it hurt for her to be with neither.
--
“Hey Butterfly.” a familiar voice sounded behind her, interrupting her thoughts.
“Heekie?” Chaewon whispers, turning around to face her former best friend. “It’s been a while.”
Heejin only smiled bitterly, “It has..”
“So.. uhh, how have you been?” Chaewon asks nervously, still unable to look Heejin in the eyes for what she did years ago.
Heejin smiles softly, sensing the girl’s nervousness. She takes a hold of Chaewon’s hand reassuringly. “I’ve been doing quite well. How about we catch up over a cup of ice cream once this is done?”
Chaewon shakes her head, before lowering it, tears starting to form in her eyes. “I don’t want to impose… Besides, don’t you still hate me?”
Heejin can only sigh, shaking her head and pulling the younger in for a hug. “I never did, I hated myself for ignoring Hyunjin, for abandoning you, but I never hated either of you.”
---
“Stay with me.” Heejin says, as the two eat their favorite ice cream in their favorite store, after Vivi-unnie hugs them and makes them promise to catch up with her more.
“Huh?” Chaewon asks, wondering what Heejin meant, her eyes glued to her Vanilla ice cream.
“You mentioned having to move out due to rent issues, so why not stay with me? It would make life easier for me to.” Heejin says shyly, looking at the girl in front of her. “Besides… I miss my best friends, and if I can have even one of them back I’d do anything for that.”
“Are you sure?” Chaewon finally looks up, looking Heejin in the eyes for the first time in a few years. “I don’t want to be a burden to you, not after what happened.”
Heejin sighs, “Like I said, I forgive you, though I never blamed either of you for that. I was at fault as well.”
Chaewon perks up slightly, then nods. “Alright then… Besides, I miss you too.”
---
Living with Heejin was an amazing feeling. Though.. Renting a one bedroom apartment probably wasn’t the best idea, they were comfortable enough to sleep in the same bed. Not that they didn’t use to do this in sleepovers with Hyunjin as well, but it’s under very different circumstances.
Chaewon sighs, even after years Heejin still makes her heart flutter. What a fitting nickname for herself, Butterfly, with how much her heart yearns for her two best friends. She thought her problematic feelings would be gone by now, yet she can’t help but fluster everytime she sees Heejin coming out of the shower in only a towel, nor can she stop herself every time Heejin pulls her in for a hug, or pays attention to her when she needs help.
She’s not going to try pursuing this, she refuses to. Not until they were able to find their third, able to mend the bridges she broke (Heejin always disagrees and claims it was her fault, Hyunjin would probably do the same), not until they were whole again, as friends first.
Chaewon brought up looking for Hyunjin one day, worried at how Heejin would react. Heejin immediately agrees, expressing her feelings of missing the taller girl, wanting to reunite with their best friend, even if it’s only for a proper closure to their relationships as a whole.
--
They see her not a week later. The two were planning a visit to Vivi’s store, but it was surprisingly closed, which was weird as Vivi never closes at this time without an emergency. As they were about to leave, they received a message from Haseul unnie, telling them to come to the shop right now and to just enter, as it was an emergency.
As they opened the door, they noticed Haseul standing to the side, as Vivi looks to be hugging and comforting a crying girl, one they haven’t seen in a few years. Even if they haven’t been friends for years, one constant they know is that Hyunjin never cries. To see her here, crying her heart out, it broke their hearts, Heejin letting out a soft whimper.
Nodding to Haseul, Chaewon calls out softly, “Hyunjinnie?” at the same time Heejin let out a worried “Chocolate?”
Hearing the voices of two of the people she missed the most, Hyunjin’s head snapped back. Letting go of Vivi, she anxiously started to walk towards the two, looking nothing like the confident Hyunjin they knew, asking a silent question. (Looking back at that moment, Hyunjin didn’t have to worry, even if they hated her, the two are the kindest people she knew. They wouldn’t reject her.)
At Heejin’s nod and Chaewon’s soft smile, Hyunjin runs to them, pulling them into a hug. It’s their first in years, the first time all three of them were in the same place, ever since that horrid blemish in their relationship. It’s also the first time all 3 of them felt whole, fully content with the people around them.
---
Hyunjin ended up moving in with them. After a short chat about Hyunjin’s situation, being kicked out by her parents after they found out she was gay, Heejin and Chaewon shared one look and immediately agreed to house the girl in question. Hyunjin, of course, vehemently argued that she didn’t want to impose, didn’t want to burden the two she’s hurt the most. “I don’t deserve your help, either of you. Not after what I’ve done.” Yet, neither of the other two were willing to back down. After all, they’ve been searching for her, and now that they’ve found her in need of help, they’ve agreed to never abandon her again. They did it once before, they’re not doing it again. However, Hyunjin refused to sleep in the bed with them, taking over the sofa. (Hyunjin still thinks she’s undeserving of the love the two has for her.)
Life was slightly awkward at the start, Heejin noticed, especially with how after that first hug Hyunjin avoided all physical contact with the two, still not able to look them in the eye. Chaewon also started to look away more, withdrawing back in her shell. Heejin noticed that Chaewon’s eyes lingered on their photo together a lot, guilt in her eyes. One night, Heejin wakes up to hear Hyunjin crying on the sofa, yet when she got out to comfort the girl, the moment she opened the door Hyunjin pretended to fall asleep, stifling her cries.
---
As Chaewon comes home from work, having started working for Vivi after having to quit her job when she moved in, she notices Heejin and Hyunjin sitting on the sofa, waiting for her. “We need to talk. All three of us.” Heejin says, looking at her.
Chaewon nods, grabbing a chair to sit facing the two, noticing that Hyunjin still refuses to look her and Heejin in the eyes. “So, what is it that you want to talk about?”
Heejin just sighs, “You two know I never blamed either of you right?”
Chaewon shakes her head, “Even if you didn’t blame me, doesn’t mean I wasn’t at fault.”
Heejin frowns, “Yet I didn’t blame you for doing that, I wasn’t a good girlfriend to Hyunjin, nor was I a good friend to you. If I had only been a better friend, neither of you would’ve been in that situation.” Hyunjin finally looks up at them, tears in her eyes. “Yet I was the one who chose to cheat on you, I made the conscious decision instead of waiting for you… and because of that I lost my best friend, and the love of my life.”
Heejin looked up, “You loved me?”
Hyunjin just looks down again, this time out of embarrassment, her cheeks flushed. “Of course I did you dummy. Why did you think I fought to stay with you for so long, even when you were ignoring me.”
Heejin grabs Hyunjins face softly, leaning her head across Hyunjin’s. “Do you still love me now?”
Hyunjin smiles, but then she looks away. “Of course I do… but I cheated on you, I don’t deserve you.”
As the two looked to be having another round of teasing, Chaewon started to get up, feeling like a third wheel. She heads to the bedroom, closing the door behind her.
As Chaewon enters the room, she breaks down, laying on the bed. She loved the two, but she loved them more than just friends, and while she’s happy to be with them again, it’s bittersweet because she can never be with them like that, never have what they did.
Chaewon fell asleep not long after, the exhaustion from work, and from hiding her feelings from her best friends finally kicking in.
--
Chaewon rolled around in her sleep, unpleasant dreams of being abandoned by the other two. As she jolts awake, a familiar hand squeezes her own. She wakes up to Heejin hugging her from one side, the sweet scent of strawberry, while Hyunjin is sitting next to her on another, hand in hers.
“Why were you crying?” Hyunjin asks, blunt as ever, yet still maintaining a comforting hold on her hand. “Let us help. Please.”
Heejin continues, whispering softly by her side. “We promised to be there for each other, yet we haven’t been. We want to do this for you, please Chaewon.”
Chaewon sighs, knowing there’s no escaping this, before spilling out all her feelings. The feeling of regret and self-hatred for allowing Hyunjin to kiss her. The feeling of jealousy for their relationship, The feeling of wishfulness she has for something like that, more specifically with the two of them. Her fear of being abandoned by the two, of being ignored and forgotten. Finally, her love for the two, Heejin, the light of her life and Hyunjin, the ever comforting night. As Chaewon finishes speaking, she feels her hair getting wet. “Heejin… Why are you crying? It’s fine.. You know I’ll get over it, over the two of you.”
Hyunjin just shares a look with Heejin, before pulling Chaewon in for a kiss. Hyunjin’s kisses taste like chocolate, something Chaewon has experienced only once before, yet it still tastes as amazing as it did before. As Hyunjin pulled away, Chaewon turned around to see Heejin’s reaction, only to get pulled into another kiss, a much more passionate one.
As Heejin pulled back, she sighs. “We should’ve known that we would end up like this. After all, we could never live without each other…”
Chaewon holds a hand to her lips.. “Does this mean what I think it means? But… after all i’ve done.”
Hyunjin nods, laying down in the bed to join her two new girlfriends. “It doesn’t matter, it’s us against the world, always. Like we promised… I’ve broken that promise once, I refuse to break it another time.”
Heejin pulls the two in a hug, “I love you two.”, which the other two are only happy to reciprocate.
In her arms, their arms, Chaewon feels content. Finally, her life feels complete and whole, just the three of them, together.
