something i think new writers forget is that you can't break the rules if you haven't mastered them yet. it may seem boring or cliche to adhere to a standard that may be uncomfortable (from a purely technical perspective), but it helps you see who you are as a writer in contrast. so you know which rules to break to better reflect yourself. so you know what tools you've gathered to express your ideas in a way that aligns with your purpose.
all words have utility, but putting them together meaningfully is fucking hard work.
#ooc;;#i just remembered an encounter in college where my brother's friend was like#'i broke all the rules of the assignment and completely disregarded what the instructor told me to do'#'do you think what i've written is good'#the thing was she had to go to that class very shortly and was worried about the fallout of what she'd done#so yelling at her about being too arrogant to follow the instructor's guidance wasn't the right call#but it steams me up to this day#she wrote stream of consciousness and it added up to a big pile of nothing#even stream of consciousness writing is tailored and edited when it is encountered in a publication or a collection#like if you're taking a class about writing don't break the rules until at least the end of the semester dude
