Something of a mild rant:   So, the other day, on Facebook, I saw on the Ao3 community there or somewhere a poll about “What is a ship in your fandom(s) that everybody ships that you can’t stand?”   I thought about it for a moment, thinking there really aren’t any ships I really can’t stand, I’m very much a ship and let ship - but I do have a couple of ships I find kind of boring (I like Zelink in Zelda fandom, but only to a degree because I get so bored of it because it’s everywhere).  The other one?  Vashwood.   And looking through the Trigun tag on tumblr today... oy, I am reminded of why I don’t like it.  It’s not that it’s a bad ship at all, it’s not that Vash and Wolfwood don’t have chemistry, it’s just that... IT’S FREAKING EVERYWHERE and it’s one of those things that I feel like most of the fandom wants to force on everyone.  Here I am going “Um, I kind of think that Vash is probably aro-ace in Trimax and Tristamp.  I kind of think that he and Meryl might start being a thing in Trigun ‘98 but nothing ever got serious except a Wolfwood / Milly thing at the end.”   Trigun... it’s one of those things I’ve always enjoyed as a gen-property. It’s something that I fundamentally think of as a gen-story, tragicomedy, sci-fi and about deep philosophical issues with world-ending stuff going on and not really much time for / room for romance.   It just doesn’t *feel* shippy to me - not in the same way as say, other things I am into, something like the modern reboot of She-Ra (ships, most of them queer, everywhere) or some of the Fire Emblem games (where you’re supposed to pair characters to get their children from the future to fight with your army and such and you can change up the ships with every playthrough).   Even as someone who does mildly ship Vash x Meryl and Wolfwood x Milly (because of ‘98) - I mean, I don’t see that much in the ways of fanart for that, or people analyzing that, it’s basically all yaoi all the time.  People have their imaginings of if they were involved in making canon how they’d make it canon... meanwhile, I’m over here with a stubborn gen-story fan enjoying ace or mostly ace headcanon for Vash going “Don’t force this on me!”  I know that technically, no one is, we all can experience the things we like in different ways, especially in a property with a main character who loves everyone he’s around deeply and strongly, but, it’s like... there’s some part of me that worries that I’ll be shuffled to the side of the fandom / thought of as not a true fan / or be “on the outs” because the fandom’s main OTP is a Bro-TP for me.
