That image for KUNG FU PANDA One looks a wee bit different, doesn't it? It's the very first publicity pic that got out for the movie, waaaay back in the fall of 2005...
I skimmed through an old article of mine on another site, and I remember the world of upcoming animated movies... In around late 2005... Looking like this.
Yes, it's a random year. No milestone or anything, as 2005 was 18 years ago, rather than 15 or 20... But I thought I'd share this.
This was what was announced as upcoming back then... To give one an idea of what happened and what didn't, and how radically different some studios' slates were:
2006
ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN (Fox/Blue Sky)
THE WILD (Disney/C.O.R.E.)
OVER THE HEDGE (Paramount/DreamWorks)
CARS (Disney/Pixar)
MONSTER HOUSE (Sony/Amblin/ImageMovers)
THE ANT BULLY (WB/DNA/Playtone)
BARNYARD (Paramount/Nickelodeon)
OPEN SEASON (Sony Animation)
RATROPOLIS (Paramount/DreamWorks/Aardman)
HAPPY FEET (WB/Roadshow/Animal Logic/Kennedy Miller)
A DAY WITH WILBUR ROBINSON (Disney Animation)
ARTHUR AND THE MINIMOYS (EuropaCorp)
DELGO (Fathom/Electric Eye)
HAPPILY N'EVER AFTER (Lionsgate/Vanguard)
FOODFIGHT! (Threshold)
2007
TMNT (WB/Imagi)
SHREK 3 (Paramount/DreamWorks)
SURF'S UP (Sony Animation)
RATATOUILLE (Disney/Pixar)
BEOWULF (Paramount/ImageMovers)
BEE MOVIE (Paramount/DreamWorks)
AMERICAN DOG (Disney Animation)
2008
CAT TALE (MGM/Imagi)
KUNG FU GECKO (Egg Story)
KUNG FU PANDA (Paramount/DreamWorks)
MADAGASCAR 2 (Paramount/DreamWorks)
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (Fox/Gracie Films)
THE SMURFS (Paramount/Nickelodeon)
TOY STORY 3 (Disney/Circle 7)
2009-beyond
FINDING NEMO 2 (Disney/Circle 7)
FRAIDY CAT (Disney Animation)
IT CAME FROM EARTH! (Paramount/DreamWorks)
MONSTERS, INC. 2: LOST IN SCARADISE (Disney/Circle 7)
PUNK FARM (Paramount/DreamWorks)
RAPUNZEL UNBRAIDED (Disney Animation)
REX HAVOC (Paramount/DreamWorks)
RIBBIT (Vanguard)
ROUTE 66 (Paramount/DreamWorks)
SHREK 4 (Paramount/DreamWorks)
UNTITLED SHREK PREQUEL (Paramount/DreamWorks)
And probably a few more that I'm missing, but that's what the landscape looked like back then. It's fascinating to see what didn't make it, what certain films on here later morphed into, and what ended coming out and when...
Shall we dive in? I think I will, briefly...
Most of the 2006 movies made it to their intended release frames, as many of them had trailers out by the end of 2005. After Michael Eisner stepped down as CEO of The Walt Disney Company, his successor Bob Iger bought Pixar, and two of Pixar's top brass - John Lasseter and Ed Catmull - assumed control of Walt Disney Feature Animation, changing the last two words to "Animation Studios". Their "overhaul" of the studio resulted in the delay - and re-titling - of A DAY WITH WILBUR ROBINSON, which became MEET THE ROBINSONS and opened in spring 2007. RATROPOLIS is retitled to FLUSHED AWAY, to avoid possible confusion with RATATOUILLE, so as not to have another ANTZ/BUG'S LIFE, FINDING NEMO/SHARK TALE situation on everybody's hands.
DELGO, infamously, got pushed back multiple times. It was already pushed back several times by that point to begin with, until randomly appearing out of nowhere a little before Christmas 2008. Happy 15th anniversary!
FOODFIGHT!, an even more infamous production, wouldn't be released until 2012 at the earliest after so much went wrong during "production" up until its sale by its completion bond company. We all know the story of that travesty!
2007 also largely stays the same... THE SIMPSONS MOVIE was thought to have been a 2008 release back in 2007, and out of nowhere a teaser for it showed up before ICE AGE 2 and confirmed it was actually coming out in summer 2007, which it did! AMERICAN DOG was to be Chris Sanders' sophomore Disney Animation effort, until Lasseter fired him from the film at the end of 2006, and it would be completely retooled into BOLT, which released in fall 2008.
2008 is where things get interesting... Outside of THE SIMPSONS MOVIE moving up a year, we have a Paramount/Nickelodeon Smurfs movie that was set to kick off a trilogy and had a cast... And curiously, after three Sony-made Smurfs movie, we're getting a Paramount/Nickelodeon Smurfs movie in 2025.
CAT TALE was to be made by Imagi, who of course did the 2007 TMNT movie and the 2009 ASTRO BOY picture. It, too, had a cast and a logo. It was supposed to be about a cat ending up in an all-dog city, playing off of old cats-vs.-dogs tropes. I wonder how much of this thing got quietly transplanted into PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK over the years? That too was a looooong-gestating film.
TOY STORY 3 was not going to be the movie we all know, this was going to be the version that was being made by Circle 7, a studio Disney set up to make sequels to Pixar's films. This was when it looked like Pixar were going to part ways with The Walt Disney Company after their contract was up. Disney had first rights to the movies produced under the contract, and these sequels were a way for big bad Diz to play hardball and get them to renegotiate. Iger threw out this Eisner tactic, and instead offered to simply buy the studio. Pixar took over TOY STORY 3 and made their movie, not what the Circle 7 movie was going to be: Buzz Lightyear being recalled to Taiwan.
Then you have... KUNG FU GECKO... Sharing a year with KUNG FU PANDA. I remember the minor controversy over this one on animation blogs and forums and such back in the day; that DreamWorks were supposedly trying to sabotage this small Singaporean animated film that had a trailer out and everything. (It wasn't rolling in theaters, you had to dig for it online. It was an independent production through and through, and the guy spearheading it had worked for DWA in the past.) But yeah... This thing was real... And it never got made, because its studio (Egg Story) got shuttered. Apparently it was retooled into a TV production, but I've seen no sign of its existence. If it had been made, it would've probably been re-titled.
(Update: Actually... It kinda... Was... Made? As an NFT animated series. Yeeeuch.)
2009 and beyond... DreamWorks had the bulk of the titles here. REX HAVOC, a comic adaptation, would later be retooled into an original story sharing some similarities: MONSTERS VS. ALIENS. IT CAME FROM EARTH! - about aliens dealing with human invaders - never happened, ROUTE 66 - a truly bizarre project about the statues in front of the various local businesses being anthropomorphic - got left behind, animal rock band romp PUNK FARM was later transported to MGM but ultimately went nowhere... SHREK 4 would of course happen, the prequel did not. PUSS IN BOOTS went from straight-to-video affair to theatrical film, and dropped the subtitle THE STORY OF AN OGRE KILLER. Similarly, the Penguins from MADAGASCAR were to get a direct-to-video movie of their own that would later go theatrical.
Circle 7 had a MONSTERS, INC. sequel and a FINDING NEMO sequel ready to go by the end of 2005, with scripts and everything.
RIBBIT was one of many proposed Vanguard Animation movies, after their debut feature VALIANT was released and when HAPPILY N'EVER AFTER was in production. Apparently they still plan to make it, along with like 20 other movies they had wanted to make for years... It's a very weird production company.
Disney Animation's RAPUNZEL UNBRAIDED, of course, got retooled into RAPUNZEL and was given to Glen Keane and Dean Wellins to direct... Until Keane and Wellins stepped down, Lasseter gave the film to Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, the film became TANGLED. This partially explains why it's one of the most expensive animated films ever, Disney got pretty far with test work and other development work for UNBRAIDED. FRAIDY CAT was to be the next Ron Clements-John Musker picture for the studio, but they left as morale got lower and lower before Lasseter and Catmull were put in charge. When they returned to Disney Animation, they were assigned THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, and never looked back on FRAIDY CAT. (It wasn't their concept to begin with.)
Yeah, I just felt like reminiscing about my younger days on the Internet and the first time I caught wind of lists of upcoming movies that I was initially unaware of, lol.

Websites, Web Videos and Production Stills
Tumblr media
Alright, so before the end of the novelization I want to just take a minute to talk about the various Foodfight! websites from over the years. From about 2001-2005, foodfight.com was simply a brief Flash animation of the movie's logo, with a second animation saying "When good food...goes BAD!" Not much to talk about, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, in around 2006 the website was updated into, well, an actual website! You can still check it out here via the Internet Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20060901184349/http://www.foodfight.com/FF-flash.html
This is honestly pretty cool- we get a brief summary of the plot, a bunch of character bios that explain things about Dex, Dan and the other Ikes that are NEVER made clear in the movie itself -for instance, did you know the cereal Dex is the mascot for actually contains a free toy of him in every box? If that was a real cereal (and they WERE planning to make it one when this movie was something of a big deal) I would've loved that, I miss cereal prizes so dearly. These character bios also show concept art from an earlier version of the movie- art that again, looks far more visually appealing than the movie we ended up with. How is it basically everything about Foodfight! except the movie itself is actually pretty cool?
Tumblr media
The website even opens with a genuinely impressive animation of the grocery store transforming into Marketropolis- I can't really show it here because it's animated, but if you follow the link you'll see it and it looks AWESOME- it really makes you think "yeah, supermarkets DO kinda look like cities!", right? Also, on the Production page we see the character model for a large, ugly Brand X soldier who we never see in the finished film. Is this the fabled Brand X Mashed Potato Man? (Almost definitely yes, there's nobody else this could be)
Tumblr media
Well, he looks absolutely HORRIFYING, but it's good to know what this character would've looked like had he not been replaced by the Brand X Lunchlady. On the Partners page as well, we see one of the companies the studio is working with is Random House, who published the novelization we've been analyzing for the past twenty-something blog posts. So far, this is the only evidence I've found of the novelization's existence outside of the copy of it I own, so it's good to see it get some acknowledgement. There's not much else to talk about with this website, so now let's move onto the next- that's right, there was ANOTHER website.
So as you may or may not know, Foodfight was initially released in theaters in 2012 in the UK and Ireland- it makes no sense at all to release it there, as British people aren't going to be familiar with characters like Charlie The Tuna or Twinkie the Kid, but apparently this was part of a contractual obligation the studio HAD to fulfill of giving it a theatrical release SOMEWHERE. As it happens, I actually grew up in England (I live in Canada now, however) and this theatrical release was where my obsession with Foodfight began. Back in 2012, I saw a poster for this movie outside a theater in London- it had Charlie Tuna, Twinkie The Kid and the Vlasic Stork on it, but I didn't recognize any of them because I was an 11 year old British child with no knowledge of Twinkies or tuna mascots. I DID however see Dex Dogtective up on the poster, and I was instantly enamoured because he looked like Indiana Jones, and I LOVED Indiana Jones back then. I begged to go see it, but was given a harsh and firm "no". Now 11 years later, I'm writing the most comprehensive blog about the movie to ever have existed. Life is funny like that sometimes, right? But that's not what we're here to talk about- when the movie was released in the UK and Ireland, there was a website coinciding with this release- foodfightmovie.co.uk.
Tumblr media
This was also saved via the Web Archive, unfortunately however only the Introduction page of the site was saved. The picture above (and a button below that says "ENTER") is basically all that's left of this site, so whatever else was on there is long gone...right?
Well, not quite! In late 2012, this Youtube video was uploaded entitled "Foodfight vox pop". It shows the audience reaction after a theater screening in the UK, comprised mainly of very young children saying they liked the movie whilst holding various Foodfight plush toys. I can't find a source for this video ANYWHERE on the internet, so it's my theory this video was originally made for the "foodfightmovie.co.uk" website before it was lost to time. I don't have any definitive proof of that, but it doesn't make sense for this video to have come from anywhere else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, I just have one last thing to share! These are production stills dated from sometime in 2007 that I found while scouring the web for more juicy tidbits about Foodfight! These stills mostly look similar to what we see in the final movie- however Lieutenant X, Sunshine, and Maximilius's character designs look far higher quality than what we see in the actual movie. The design of the ketchup tanks is slightly different as well, and Sunshine appears in a grassy meadow that looks vastly different from the one we see in the finished film. These aren't a huge deal, but based on the character designs and models we see here, we can say DEFINITIVELY that the version of the movie we know and...tolerate today was in development in 2007. Besides that, I wanted to share EVERYTHING I know about Foodfight on this blog, even the minor things that'd otherwise be uninteresting.
I really hope you enjoyed these- I didn't want to just talk about the novelization on this blog, I wanted to share the wider world of Foodfight! as well, from storyboards to concept art to long-lost videogames, and I hope by reading these you learned something you didn't already know. We have two more chapters to go before we reach the end of the novelization, so I say let's snap crackle and pop our way through to the end!

List of movies that are believed to never get a sequel
Rules of this list
Americans movies only.
The movie must something I’ve heard of before or at the very least, the movie has had its trailer viewed by me.
The movie can’t be a sequel/prequel.
This whole is based on my opinion. You can either agree with me or disagree with me. I don’t really care. Just don’t be hateful in you don’t like my opinion.
1999
Fantasia 2000 (Maybe it will get a sequel in the year 3000, but I doubt it since it is been 18 years and barely anyone cares about this anymore.)
The Iron Giant (It is perfect with just one movie.)
Our Friend, Martin (I remember my movie having this on VHS. Maybe they will do a reboot in like 2 years that time of me typing this or put it on Netflix with a more remastered look.)
2000
Chicken Run (Highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time...forgotten…Sequel? Maybe after Shaun the Sheep Movie 2.)
The Emperor’s New Groove (While I don’t remember the movie very well and seeing that it was liked by so many, there could be a small chance of a sequel, but knowing Disney...it is probably not going to happen especially after the failed tv series.)
The Tigger Movie (Slightly above average movie. Not getting a sequel.)
2001
Mickey’s Magical Christmas… (While I don’t really care about Mickey Mouse and am still trying to figure out what Goofy is, I think this movie should get a remastering or a sequel as it is a good movie for children and who could turn down a Christmas movie with Mickey Mouse?)
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer...Misfit Toys (I'm not sure about this one, but maybe a remaster would work in a few years from now, but no need for a sequel/prequel for now.)
2002
Eight Crazy Nights (No…just no.)
Treasure Planet (It will not get a sequel due to the movie not doing good at all at the box office. What I think that had happened was the movie came out too soon. Like if it came now, everyone would love the movie’s use of 2D traditional animation combined with 3D computer animation.)
The Wild Thornberrys Movie (I doubt it since I believe this was the movie to finish the series with and that a sequel to this movie would be totally pointless. But who knows? Nickelodeon is one who likes surprising its audience with random stuff like having 3 movies be created for the older Nicktoons.)
2003
Piglet’s Big Movie (Not needed)
Rugrats Go Wild (Both series are discontinued so there is no need for another movie.
2004
Home on the Range (The movie was an average film, getting a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. I think that it just awful. Terrible characters, awful animation style, Boring storyline, and worst of all, horrific humor. One of the worst Disney movie I’ve ever seen. Not needing a sequel EVER.)
The Lion King 1 ½ (While I don’t this sidequel needs a sequel, I wish that Disney, or any animated company for that matter, would make more movies like this one. Give a perspective of some movies. They do for books all the time.)
The Polar Express (I’m not sure about this film. Beautifully animated film. Perfect for Christmas time. Nominated for three Academy Awards. 55% on Rotten Tomatoes? While it was boring in some parts, I see that a lot of people put their lives into making this film. Might have a remake in a few years or so.)
2005
Corpse Bride (One of Tim Burton’s greatest movie of all time. No need of a sequel. It is perfect with one movie. Plus, I love all the fan art was created before/during/after the movie’s release. So dark and cute.)
Valiant (I don’t remember this movie. So…No sequel for you.)
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (How are going make a sequel w/o the voice actor for Wallace? I didn’t even know he passed away this year. It would be disrespectful to have a sequel without him in it. Also, you can’t have Gromit without Wallace. It just wouldn’t work.)
2006
Monster House (My second favorite horror film of all time. I wish that they would make a sequel of this movie, but the movie is probably better without a sequel for the series. One and done is all it needs.)
The Ant Buddy (No need for a sequel since it was a book adaptation.)
The Wild (A sad, rip-off of Madagascar and forgotten DISNEY film. No sequel for you)
2007
The Bee Movie (There was going to be a sequel, but it was canceled.)
Meet the Robinsons (Another forgotten Disney movie. Disney will never make a sequel of it because it didn’t make them enough money.)
2008
Bolt (Not impacting enough to get a sequel. It is not needed)
Fly Me to the Moon (This has got to be THE worst movie of 2008 I have ever seen. MY GOD, this movie was boring. Literally, nothing in this movie was interesting in the slightest. I hope it never gets a sequel.)
Igor (I don’t know about this movie. Igor 2? Maybe if it didn’t suck so bad. Ol’ fake ass Hunchback of Notre Dame looking ass dude with a fake ass Ren Höek and talking jar of piss.)
WALL-E (Same reason as Bolt)
2009
Coraline (It would be pointless to make a sequel plus Henry Selick doesn’t seem like a director who makes sequels. Plus, Plus, most book-to-movie adaptations don’t usually have sequel movies…unless you’re Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.)
G-Force (Rip-off of Alvin and the Chipmunks and SPY KIDS. I can’t believe this was a real movie. Should been a direct-to-video film. No sequel for you.)
Monsters vs. Aliens (This movie is stupidly bad. I dislike it because of how stupid it. Most of the film was ruined in the trailer. If Dreamworks is stupid enough, they might make a sequel of it, but I doubt it.)
The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (This movie is like El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera means the not-so-subtle adult humor of Ren & Stimpy “Adult Party Cartoon and I sure as HELL don’t need to be reminded of that. No sequel for this horrible Mexican adult film.)
2010
Megamind (Don’t know. Not sure if they will make a sequel or not. Wtf is up with Dreamworks? Why aren’t they making as many movies as Disney? Like come on now.)
2011
Mars Needs Mom (No… JUST NO!!)
Puss in Boots (Dreamworks cancelled it for whatever reason. I don’t get Dreamworks. They’ll make a movie something terrible without thinking that it was terrible. But when it comes to good movies that made more money than said bad movies, they’ll forget it even happened…unless it is Shrek of course.
2012
The Illusionauts (http://awfulmovies.wikia.com/wiki/Fantastic_4orce)
2013
Free Birds (A movie that seems to be competing with the idea of Chicken Run. I didn’t see the movie and I am glad that I didn’t. No sequel for you. Movies that have a rating lower than 20% on Rotten Tomatoes don’t need to be watched to know how terrible they are.)
Epic (Almost mistaken the movie as a rip-off of FernGully. Good thing, Epic didn’t try to tell its audience to not destroy the forest and be environmentally friendly. The reason to why this film won’t be getting a sequel is because of uh… it was very forgettable, and visuals only help this movie with pleasing a few people.)
Escape from Planet Earth (It is like Planet 51 but worst with more unfunny humor and stupider characters. Sad how that movie came out five years before this…f*ck, no, you can’t get a sequel.)
2014
…I got nothing for this year specifically, so I say f*ck it. To 2015!
2015
The Good Dinosaur (The film feels like a re-imaging of the 2000 Dinosaur movie. Like they were going to make a sequel of Dinosaur, but they wanted to make it look more kid-friendly. No sequel because it is not interesting enough and it didn’t make an effective impact for Disney.)
Strange Magic (It is like if they combined BoxTrolls with Epic and removed all comedy from both films. Just like Epic, the visuals were lovely and beautiful, but it didn’t convince anyone to go see it. Also, the characters remind me of the monsters from Gremlins.)
Home (I’ve watched this movie at least 3 times and I’ve hated watching every time. This movie is boring as hell and has moronic characters. The film proves to me that Rihanna is not a good voice actor, but a talented artist. I sure wish that this movie would use other music besides Rihanna’s as it was getting annoying to listen to only her music through the film. No sequel because Dreamworks did not see as a money-making movie like Madagascar or Shrek.)
2016
Kubo and the Two Strings (No one saw this movie yet the rated as one of the greatest films of all-time. 95% on Rotten Tomatoes? That’s crazy and very hard to pull off. No sequel because Laika does not make sequels plus these films just about two to four years to make.)
Norm of the North (It got the “Foodfight! Effect” which is, when a movie gets 9% on rotten tomatoes and score lower than 4.0 on IMDb. I almost have mistaken this film for something that Sony made. Also, can we make the “Foodfight! Effect” a thing because the effect kind of starting with this movie and now The Emoji Movie is getting the same effect.) #FoodfightEffect #F.E.
And that’s all the movies that will never get a sequel from 1999 to 2016. I will probably do this list again in 2019, but I might extend from 1999 to 1979 or 1989. Idk. Anyway, thank you for reading my list and I hope you have a good day.
