However, if you do start to introduce scheduled ‘playtime’ sessions, your cat will slowly get used to them. Younger, more energetic cats may even take the initiative and request longer or more frequent periods of activity.

As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to play with your cat for between 20 minutes and an hour each day, split into a few short bursts of activity. This will stop your cat from getting too tired and losing interest.

Helping your pet stay healthy with play isn’t just about letting them loose on a scratching pole. Cats need different types of stimulation, and a range of toys that they can play with either by themselves, or with their human (that’s you!).

If your cat is a little bit on the heavier side, you might need to pay more attention to an exercise regime. If they don’t get enough physical activity, cats can become overweight, and while it might be cute, there can be serious ramifications for their health. These include diabetes and osteoarthritis, so it’s important to act quickly.

Of course, it is not always easy to tell if a cat is overweight. Some of us are just a bit fluffier than others! If in doubt, there are cat health check tools you can find online, but the final call should always be your vet’s. They’ll be able to tell you exactly how healthy your pet is, and if they need to get more exercise to shed some of those extra pounds.

When it comes to actually losing the weight, you might need to start small. After all, your pet may not be used to long periods of activity, so a few minutes here and there is a good way to ease into a healthier routine. Week in Review: When lies and incompetence collide

Sometimes the smallest things can reveal the most. Last week Boris Johnson delivered his big speech on future investment in our infrastructure, and referred to planning rules. Specifically, he referred to the great crested newt, which has historically held back certain building projects. With classic bombast, he declared: "Newt-counting delays are a massive drag on the prosperity of this country."

But then a few days later, the BBC reported something peculiar. Such delays had turned out to be a thing of the past. Journalists could find no evidence of significant delays to building projects because of newt surveys. The Local Government Association couldn’t find any examples either. Current surveys could now in fact be done rapidly. The head of the Wildlife Trusts said the speech was "pure fiction". The prime minister had promised to eliminate a problem which did not exist.

The newts issue barely gained any attention and can almost be dismissed as a joke. This kind of rhetoric is now fully normalised. What it really speaks to is the total contempt with which we are governed.

It is, of course, classic Johnson: identify a straw man or other easy target, fail to do any research, exploit it for drama or laughs, and convince your audience you know how to tackle it. This is politics as gesture and theatre, devoid of substance or meaning – and powered, at its root, by deception.

It is harder to forgive when the target is care workers. This week the prime minister perhaps reached a new low when he observed that "too many care homes didn’t really follow the procedures in the way that they could have". As care workers noted, the procedures were followed exactly as they had been set out: hospitals had released patients back into care homes and staff had no option but to receive them. Many of those workers, denied personal protective equipment, had themselves died. Now, the prime minister was blaming them.

Sensing trouble, the government fell over itself to deny what Johnson had said. The prime minister’s spokesman insisted that he "was pointing out that nobody knew what the correct procedures were because the extent of asymptomatic transmission was not known at the time." At PMQs, Johnson went even further, asserting that "nobody knew early on" about this form of transmission. But that, too, was a lie. Government scientists were pointing to evidence of it as early as January, and scientists around the world were warning about it consistently until the pandemic took hold. The government, indeed, demonstrated that it knew asymptomatic transmission existed, because it was the entire pretext for physical distancing and the nationwide lockdown. Needless to say, Johnson repeatedly refused to apologise for any of it.

This was not just routine dishonesty. It was gaslighting people who had risked their lives, and gaslighting the wider population, not just after the event but in real time. The government was not getting it wrong: we were.

Ministers simply cannot stop misleading the public. This week Full Fact revealed that the prime minister had again not spoken the truth with regard to testing figures. In June, Johnson declared that "tests conducted at the 199 testing centres, as well as the mobile test centres, are all done within 24 hours" – but the charity has found that the true figure was just 19% of tests in the first category and 5% in the second. Meanwhile, Sky reported yesterday that officials had "hand-cranked" the testing data to produce impressive numbers for the daily press conferences, and tens of thousands of tests were in fact double-counted. Last month, the government did not publish the numbers of people tested at all. This is not simply a question of the reliability of data, but the economic recovery. If the public cannot have faith in a widespread and accurate testing regime, they cannot have the confidence to go out and return to normal life.

The problem is that the government is not merely driven by dishonesty. It combines it with endemic incompetence. Sometimes, as with Brexit, they meet in a vortex of self-sabotage. Last Friday Johnson told LBC that a no-deal outcome – dubbed, with Orwellian cynicism, an ‘Australian-style’ solution – was "very good".  Meanwhile, a leaked letter from trade secretary Liz Truss has revealed that the current border plans for next year could lead to increased smuggling and a legal challenge at the WTO. Elsewhere, this voluntary rupture to our trade is ignored altogether. In his mini-budget statement this week, Rishi Sunak outlined the measures to boost and cushion the economy and didn’t even see fit to mention it.

Sunak’s budget this week was notable mainly for its lopsided priorities. While many welcomed the VAT cut and stamp duty holiday, HMRC and Treasury officials expressed their reservations over the £1000 job retention bonus and half-price restaurant scheme – and Sunak directly over-ruled them. The bonus scheme, costing up to £9bn, will in many cases pay large companies who were already planning to retain their staff, and could provide an incentive to dismiss workers who hadn’t already been furloughed. As the opposition pointed out, that money could have been targeted at the sectors most in need of help, or the lowest paid, or at the vast numbers of the self-employed and temporary contractors who have not been able to access any government assistance. Spending is not about blank cheques but choices.

In the end this comes down to trust. The government is packed with ministers who either don’t know what they’re doing, or know only too well and do it anyway.

Lies and incompetence are bad enough on their own. This government is fuelled by both.

Trophy Hunting; A Personal Opinion Supported by Research

         Trophy hunting of African wildlife is the legal practice of hunting animals, usually larger ones that are typically taken home and then taxidermied for display as a “trophy” (abcnews.go.com). Animals that are popularly hunted include buffalo, rhino, elephants, lions, crocodiles, and hippos (absnews.go.com). This activity can be rather expensive and is considered to be for the wealthy, as it includes fees for permits, guides, equipment, and travel. All of these costs can add up to be fairly high, depending on the animal a hunter is aiming to kill. It is a hobby which some believe has the potential to positively effect Africans and their wild animals, while others believe it will do the opposite. Is trophy hunting ethical? Could it possess potential benefits for African wildlife as well Africans themselves? For the remainder of this paper, I will argue against the trophy hunting of African wildlife. This position was not easily taken but is the result of the observation and consideration of arguments of those who support trophy hunting as well as those who do not.

        Hunting is an unethical form of recreation that disrupts nature by taking the lives of innocent animals. These animals are and have beloved mates and offspring. They are living creatures whose family and social dynamics should be respected and may be seriously disrupted when a hunter cuts lives abruptly short. Species such as elephants, many whom inhibit regions of Africa, can suffer from complicated mental illnesses including depression after the loss of a family member or a mate, similar to humans (news.nationalgeographic.com). If these animals are aware of a hunter, they are intelligent enough to comprehend the situation and they will react emotionally. The animals that are hunted as well as those who are not also experience vast amounts of stress due to hunting as a whole. This stress stems from heightened fear and anxiety, which are the result of the loud noises and commotions that hunters make. This severely throws off normal eating habits, which then increases the struggle of their winter survival after having had difficultly eating and storing the fat and energy that is necessary for the season (peta.org). Both migration and hibernation of animal species is disrupted by the act of hunting itself, as well as the campfires, recreational vehicles, and overall presence of people (peta.org). Trophy hunting clearly affects these animals and their habitat in a negative way. These negative consequences bring about emotional hardship and physical pain too, seeing that even if an animal is successfully shot by a hunter on the first try, a quick kill is not common (peta.org). A study that was tracking eighty deer discovered that of the twenty-two that were shot, eleven of them were wounded but not recovered, left by hunters (idausa.org). This causes much physical pain and suffering for animals like the deer that were unsuccessfully killed, as they are forced to endure a prolonged death or a violent injury.

        Those who oppose the information presented in the previous paragraph first and foremost argue that hunting can actually benefit wildlife. They claim that the animal deaths that have arisen from hunting have been far less impactful on species survival as a whole in comparison to deaths that have come about from habitat destruction, declines in species to prey on, and increased conflicts between humans and animals (perc.org). The U.S. Wildlife and Fish conservation says that trophy hunting, when it is done responsibly and lawfully, can play a positive role in a well-managed conservation program and contribute to the long-term survival of the species (perc.org). Regarding the matter of lawful trophy hunting, the Oxford University Wildlife Conservation Research Unit says that the most fundamental benefit of trophy hunting to lion conservation specifically is that it provides a financial incentive to maintain their habitat (telegraph.co.uk). This activity has the ability to generate an impactful amount of the much needed funding for Africa’s larger conservation efforts through the sale of hunting permits, professional guide payments, transportation, lodging, and tourism profits as a whole. In fact, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, responsible for managing the Hwange Nation Park (where Cecil the Lion lived), obtains a majority of its funding from trophy hunting proceeds. Across Africa, hunting produces over $200 million yearly (perc.org). If trophy hunting were to be banned and that revenue were to vanish, various organizations and their ability to protect wildlife from poachers and illegal hunting would vanish as well. Andrew Loveridge, the Oxford researcher who collared and studied Cecil the Lion (who was shot and killed by a trophy hunter), acknowledges the large amount of land that is protected as hunting reserves in Africa and how it noticeably exceeds the amount of land protected as national parks in comparison (perc.org). A situation used to support the importance of the financial benefits of hunting in Africa is that of the Galana Ranch in Kenya. This property, nearly the size of Yellowstone National Park, was leased for 46-years by Martin Anderson around 1960 (hoover.org). Anderson incorporated a ranch running strategy that was comprised of cattle ranching and hunting (hoover.org). This generated income until 1977 when Kenya banned hunting and since then, large animal populations have shrunk 60-70% (hoover.org). The idea is that because of the loss of revenue from hunting, Galana lost the ability to fund private conservation efforts, which was disadvantageous for large animal population survival.

        Another notion of those who support trophy hunting in Africa is the idea that the locals will and want to benefit from it. Hunters argue that a majority of the people living in African villages would simply prefer to kill rather than conserve wild creatures like lions (perc.org). This may be in part because of the revenue that trophy hunting generates, but is predominately due to the fear and destruction that wildlife can cause for them. Africans are often faced with the loss of crops, livestock, and even their own lives to dangerous species and thus see them as objects of terror that are to be avoided rather than as something to be protected (NYTimes.com). Lions specifically eat close to $270 worth of livestock annually according to the University of Chicago’s Field Museum and the Kenya Wildlife Service (perc.org). Financially, this is a disastrous loss in a country where the income per capita is $1,200 (perc.org). Goodwell Nzou, a writer for the New York Times and a previous citizen of Zimbabwe, discovered the death of Cecil the Lion and was instinctively filled with joy. When he had heard the reactions of American citizens, he was utterly confused and immediately questioned the designation of Cecil’s killer as the villain. In Nzou’s village, which is surrounded by wildlife conservation areas, no lion has ever been viewed as beloved or given a nickname. He explains this mindset through memory. At nine years old, a lion killed a few chickens, goats, and a cow in his village, which prompted a warning for children to walk to school in groups and stop playing outside. His mother had to be escorted by his father and older brothers with machetes, axes, and spears in order to collect firewood. Soon enough, Nzou’s great uncle was attacked by a lion and luckily escaped with just an injured leg. Wild animals do hold significance for African people that the author refers to as “near-mystical”, but they are also seen as a significant threat to African people and their communities.

        The financial justification for trophy hunting made by its advocates is faulty. It is not that hunting’s potential revenue does not have the ability to help fund wildlife conservation efforts, but it is too often that the money obtained from hunting is misused. A new report published by the Democratic staff of the House of Natural Resources Committee found little evidence that the money from trophy hunting profits in Africa is actually being used to help threatened species (NYTimes.com). This is due to the widespread corruption found in some African countries governments and inadequately managed wildlife programs (NYTimes.com). What Is The Most Important Gear To Bring On A Camping Trip?

Camping is a highly personal experience, and every outdoor adventurer brings to it his or her own strengths, weaknesses, needs and desires. This means that you will probably want to bring along a different set of items than your buddy when heading out on your next trip. For example, you may want to bring along your camera, while your companion would prefer to bring a book. But your equipment list won’t differ entirely from that of your partners — there are a half-dozen or so things that every camper will need to bring. There are also a few items that are necessary for the group but needn’t be carried by every individual member of the party.

We’ll cover both types of equipment below – those things that should appear in every camper’s pack, and those things which should be divvied up between the members of the group.

What Supplies Should I Bring Camping?

For the most part, you’ll need these things no matter where you are heading or how long your trip is scheduled to last. Because you’ll use these items on each and every trip, it is always wise to prioritize these things when allotting your camping-gear budget.

Sleeping Bag

A sleeping bag or camping blanket will keep you warm while you’re sleeping out in the elements, and they’ll cushion your body a little bit too. Most campers elect to bring a sleeping pad too, but this is not absolutely necessary, particularly if you are the type that can sleep anywhere.

Most campers will also be using a tent, but extreme campers may prefer using an enclosed or bivvy-style bag, which will protect you from rain and snow. These are rarely as fun for recreational campers, but they can actually keep you warmer than a traditional tent in extreme conditions, and they obviously help you free up pack space and eliminate a lot of weight.

Water Bottle

Decades ago, camping websites books would list a canteen among the items every camper must bring, but in the 21st century, campers have a number of better options. Flashlight

Every camper should have a flashlight on his or her person. Flashlights are not only imperative for safety reasons, but they’re also good for your sanity – sharing a flashlight is no fun at all. Some campers like to bring along a headlamp, but you’d be wise to bring a flashlight too, as they excel in a variety of ways that headlamps do not. For example, it can be difficult to hold a headlamp steady for a lengthy period of time.

Multitool

A good multitool is one of the most important things in any camper’s pack. They are the Swiss army knives of modern outdoor enthusiasts. Multitools give you a way to carry several different tools in one convenient and relatively light package.

Even the simplest of multitools will usually feature pliers, screwdrivers, scissors and a knife blade, while the more elaborate models will include everything but the kitchen sink. As with almost every other camping-gear decision, you’ll have to balance the competing forces of weight and luxury, so consider your needs carefully when making your choice.

Survival Kit

A small survival kit should be one of the first things every camper packs before a trip. It should contain the essential items you’d need to survive, should a worst-case scenario unfold during your trip. Some campers prefer to purchase commercially assembled survival kits while others prefer to create their own custom survival kit themselves. Items Every Camping Party Needs

In addition to the things each individual needs, each camping party needs several items that can be shared among the members. Obviously, if you are camping alone you’ll have to carry each of these items yourself, while large parties will be able to spread the weight of these items among the members.

Tent

Tents are shared by two campers, but large tents can accommodate up to 5 or 6 people. This means that you’ll have to adjust the number of tents in your group to match your space needs.

Note that it is not necessary for any one person to carry the entire tent, as you could split it up into its component pieces if you like. This way, you could carry the rainfly and poles, while your companion carries the main tent shell.

Water Purifier

You should never drink untreated water while camping, as even the purest of mountain streams can carry a variety of nasty pathogens. Just a sip from the wrong creek could ruin your trip and have you heading to the emergency room. There are a variety of ways to treat water, but most campers will find that a water purifier is the most convenient and effective solution.

You’ll probably want to bring a purifier for every two members of your group. Aside from the redundancy benefits of multiple units, they’ll save you time too — it can take a while to pump a single liter of water, and time always seems to move slower when you’re thirsty.

Camp Stove

You can cook on an open fire, but this is usually a lot more trouble than it’s worth. Additionally, campfires are prohibited in many locations, particularly west of the Rockies, where wildfires are a perpetual threat. This means that you’ll want to bring along a camp stove whenever you go camping.

You’ll also need to bring along fuel too, and this will typically take up more space than the actual stove. As with water purifiers and tents, you’ll probably want to bring along one stove for every two campers. This will make it much easier to cook larger quantities of food than a single stove would.

First Aid Kit

While some campers will choose to include a few basic first-aid supplies in their survival kit, every camping party should have a well-stocked first-aid kit. Although you can certainly pack as much as space permits, the following items should be considered mandatory:

Gauze

Tape

Tweezers

Benadryl

Aspirin

Ibuprofen

Topical pain-relieving lotion or gel

Antidiarrheal medication

Antacid

Antiseptic wipes

Triple antibiotic ointment or cream

Moleskin

Additionally, you’ll want to bring along any prescription medications you’ll need during the trip. Make sure to pack your first-aid items in a good carrying case to keep everything together and organized. If possible, select a brightly colored bag, so it is easy to find in an emergency. A first-aid kit can be used for several people; you’ll just need to adjust the quantities packed to reflect the size of the group.

Mess Kit

Every camping party needs a mess kit so that you can prepare, cook and serve food. A typical kit would be comprised of two sets of minimal flatware, a couple of pots or pans, two cups and two plates. However, there are plenty of variations on the theme and plenty of options in the marketplace. Mess kits aren’t really life-or-death equipment, so you can pack like a minimalist or a gourmet chef, depending on your desires. You may consider a mess kit an individual item, or you may try to get away with a single mess kit for four people – either way will work.

It’s also important to consider the type of food you’ll be making when planning out your mess kit. Many commercial camping foods can be prepared in and eaten from the bag, which will eliminate the need for individual plates. But on the other hand, you’ll need plenty of pans and individual plates if you want to make pancakes and bacon for breakfast.

Map

If your camping party is to have any chance of reaching its intended destination, you’ll need a good map to help you get there. A good map is even useful when you are hiking along well-marked trails, as it will allow you to determine how far you’ve traveled (and more importantly, how much farther you’ll have to travel to reach the campsite).

Digital maps – such as those displayed on your phone or tablet – are an intriguing option for modern campers, as they can provide a wealth of information that isn’t provided by paper maps. They also provide value from a safety context, as you can use your phone to contact help in an emergency.

However, digital devices present problems too. They are much heavier than a paper map is, and they are dependent on a good signal – something that is rare in the wilderness. Accordingly, it is probably wise to bring a paper map along too, as a backup.

Your Pack; Your Gear; Your Decisions

Every camping trip is different, so you may need to tweak this equipment list to account for the local terrain, wildlife, climate or laws of your destination. Accordingly, no list – including the one above – should be considered exhaustive and foolproof. You must always plan your trip carefully to ensure you have a good time and remain safe while enjoying the great outdoors.

However, the items listed above do represent the primary supplies and tools that you’ll need to ensure most of the memories you’ll make will bring a smile to your face. Additionally, some campers are willing to endure rougher conditions than others. We compiled this list for the “typical” camper, who wants a reasonable amount of comfort during the outing. Ultralight campers and survival-minded minimalists may scoff at a tent, but the typical weekend camper will likely have a much better time if sheltered from the elements.

Conversely, car campers and those for whom camping must include access to bathrooms and showers will probably want to double or triple the length of this list.
