I haven't been seeing much about cosplay on my dashboard recently, but even so I thought that folks might want to know about this if you don't already. (I stumbled across it this morning.) There are a lot of 1940s designs, both wartime and New Look.

Spring Dress Sew-a-long Step by Step
Spring Dress Sew-a-long Step by Step
Now that we are deep into Spring, I thought it was time to share the dress I made for the Spring Dress Sew-a-long we are hosting over in our Killer Kitsch Discord Community. Please join us! Our sew-a-longs have no end date and we are doing several a year, plus, it’s a great group of sewists and knitters. I decided last year that I am going to move away from my base colours of blacks/reds and…

Fifties Resort Wear By EvaDress
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When it gets cold up north, people head down south and this vintage set of separates reproduced by Eva Dress has everything you need for a vacation. There is a simple blouse with notched collar and cut-on sleeves. It merely ties at the waist, so it is meant to go over something, maybe a t-shirt, or here, the bra top. Then there are a pair of shorts which are fitted and can be drawn up at the sides with drawstrings if you like. The skirt, which makes for a two-piece dress if done up in the same fabric as the shirt, is the full circle so dear to designers in the 1950s. You wore the shorts with the shirt or bra-top to the beach, and off the beach slipped on the skirt and were ready for a cafe on the boardwalk or at your hotel. Yes,there was a level of formality even to sportswear, but it also gave you a range of enjoyable fashion opportunities.
The original fabrics were cottons like broadcloth or even denim which would work fine for the shorts, but rayons were recommended too which would give a much softer look and a nice drape to both skirt and blouse.
EvaDress reproduces original patterns, so you need to take a look at the sizes before you cut anything out, then you need to muslin because the garments will fit slightly differently too. Yes, vintage patterns take a bit more effort, but they often have a bit more charm. This one comes in multiple sizes.

Hi random question, but where do you usually get your vintage patterns from? I noticed from your previous posts that we buy about the same size.
Oh, sorry. I didn't see this until just now.
I find most of my patterns on Etsy. Survivor bias means that most original patterns still in existence are super tiny, but you can also occasionally find them in more general size ranges if you look.
I can also recommend some indie brands I've had luck with, that reproduce original patterns on much sturdier paper.

@ms1940mccall Instagram-posted her creation from pattern D30-5156, the 1933 Katharine Hepburn Dress & Jacket, photo credit: https://www.instagram.com/dashiee/ (pattern below). She posted her resurrection of this ensemble she originally created in 2011 (for which she was a winner in the first EvaDress Patterns Challenge!) along with posts of a recent additional make from the same pattern and was chosen in the drawing and received the $25 gift certificate to EvaDress.com for the month of August. Be sure to post your makes from EvaDress Patterns on Instagram and/or FaceBook by tagging (#EvaDressPatterns) and you will be automatically entered for a chance at a monthly drawing for $25 off at EvaDressPatterns.com! There is no limit to the number of posts you make each month (gives more chances to win the drawing!). #EvaDressPatterns #1930sstyle #1930sdress #$25GiftCertificatetoEvaDress.com #VintagePatterns #Frock #ButterickPatterns #HowardGreer #KatharineHepburn #ChristopherStrong #ButterickStarredPatterns #VintageButterickPatterns #1933 #bias #kimonojacket https://www.instagram.com/p/CihAdImOFiL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Holiday Gifts: Vintage Patterns
These websites do not seem to have offer gift certificates, but whoever objected to a card with a crispy bill in it and a wish for many hours of happy sewing?
So here we have Eva Dress with some dramatic 1930s evening coats, and don’t we all need an evening coat? Other than blowing up and clarifying the instructions (instruction sheets in the 1930s were usually no more than a large single-sided sheet), these are  original vintage patterns reproduced. So you must muslin them to make sure of sizing and technique.  Find them here: https://evadress.com/
Then there is Decades of Style with a 1930s capelet jacket. This is another garment  that goes well for evening in a velvet, but I can imagine it in a tweed for a daytime look if you want to wear it more often. These are vintage patterns are-sized to modern standards, but again you are urged to muslin as you don’t want to wreck that lovely velvet or tweed you had in mind. You can find them here: https://www.decadesofstyle.com/
And lastly, Sew Chic is a vintage look, but with modern sizing. Of course, with a fitted evening dress like this where you need the bodice, the skirt, the shoulders and the sleeves to all fit perfectly, you muslin first. Especially as you will be making this in a fine crisp silk like dupioni for which you will have paid a pretty penny. You can find them here: http://www.sewchicpatterns.com/
Happy sewing!

If I Could Could Only Have One Blouse Pattern… 1930s Twist and Tie
Whenever the new sewing pattern collections come out, I really don’t mind that much if there aren’t a whole lot that I feel I must buy as this is a money saver. But I have a friend who often is disappointed. When we were last talking about this, I pointed out that both of us could probably live happily with only a handful of patterns that we know and love. For me, this blouse pattern from EvaDress.com would be one.
I have made this multiple times, in solids, in silks, in cottons, and this time in a cotton print voile that is underlined in white to keep the color-blend just as it is. I did shorten and narrow the ties as they otherwise peek out from under a suit jacket and my colleagues think I am coming undone. And this time I swapped out a ¾-length sleeve with both elbows darts and gathers along the lower edge of the seam. The original comes with puffed sleeves. I can close both side seams and wriggle into this pattern, but I like to leave it open at the left side and make a hidden snap placket; see photo 3. I have made and like other 1930s blouses which were polished enough to wear to office work with a skirt alone, but I come back to this one again and again. Do you have a favorite pattern too?

Well, If This Isn’t A Knockout: Eva Dress 713
This dramatic evening dress from Vogue Patterns in 1952 is reprinted by Eva Dress. It comes in two versions of a fitted and boned bodice: either a long bias drape which goes across the front and is tied in the back or simple shoulder straps (take the drape, says I). An inside belt holds the bodice to the waist and will help the strapless version stand up. Essentially, strapless gowns are built from the waist up. The long skirt is also fitted to the knees and then pieced flounces flare out at the bottom of the skirt and are stiffened with hair canvas. The effect is something like a mermaid who went out to a gala, and of course, you will need long gloves and some stellar earrings. And a gala.
All the evening fabrics that have some body will work, like satin and taffeta, shantung and faille. They also recommended crepe which seems too soft to me, and velvet, which will surely get squashed when you sit. Lace as an overlay is an option if you would like something softer and want to play with the colors of the lace and the fabric beneath it.
EvaDress offers it in multiple sizes, but it is the original sizing, and any fitted bodice needs a test muslin anyway, so do not skip that step. You can find it here:  https://www.evadress.com/products/1952-evening-gown-e50-713?variant=12591412478023

1940s Trousers And The Journey To Get The Right Fit: Toile #1
1940s Trousers And The Journey To Get The Right Fit: Toile #1
Trousers, Pants, Slacks or what ever you wish to call them, have been my nemesis in my later adult years. I haven’t owned a pair in 10+ years and to be honest I swore I was never going to own a pair again. As per my previous post, there are a lot of things I hate about modern pants, including the fit and how short the rise is. I’m a high waisted, curvy girl! That just isn’t going to do. As I have…
