(2) cost of the cars comes out of the consumers, and companies buying fleets, not the government budget that pays for road repairs and potentially infrastructure
(3) alternately, if car companies got behind building shared infrastructure instead of siloing competing proprietary charging stations/networks, they could do this for us.
E.g. if it led to massive profits for them in terms of cars sold (no one wants to buy a car they can't feasibly take long distances bc there's nowhere to charge it) and/or if they got big local and federal tax benefits for building it.

Looks like the basic premise is that manufacturers don't want to invest in infrastructure without being sure people will buy the cars, and people don't want to buy the cars without infrastructure. Seems like the plan is basically to seed an infrastructure that can be a good start, and require way more electric car production (or other low-emission cars), so that people will know they can fuel up, and car companies don't have to do the basic infrastructure stuff.
Then if car companies want to build more super-fast charging stations, or start some branded line of charging stations that gives Honda owners (or whatever) a deep discount, or chain stores want to put charging stations in every parking spot to get free advertising and attract customers... they can!

This also reminds me how incredibly fucking hard it's been to find low- or no-emissions cars to buy. I've been doing this for more than twenty years and it is absolutely RIDICULOUS how complicated and difficult they make it.
I've had to research what the options are - natural gas? Ethanol? Biodiesel? Electric? Hybrid? Why isn't there electric-natural gas or electric-biodiesel hybrid? Oh, there is? But only if you buy a $1000+ conversion kit and install it into a diesel car yourself or find a mechanic who knows how to do it?? - And then once I find something I want, it turns out that yes, there ARE stations near me, but all of them are only for state fleet cars, or something.
When I started using biodiesel, the options were:
1. Make your own by finding a restaurant that would let you take its waste oil, then combining it with lye on your own to make biodiesel
2. Find a biodiesel company that lets you buy in bulk, and enough locals to split the cost and the biodiesel with
3. Have a biodiesel station near you. Oops, it's only open certain hours! You got there in the middle of the night and they're closed and you don't know where to even buy regular diesel!
4. Have a biodiesel station near you that you cam become a member of so you can unlock the pumps after hours
5. Carry an emergency carboy or five of biodiesel around with you (come to think of it, in the early days before they bought a pump, our local biodiesel station actually just sold carboys of it and filled them up for you. Or maybe they just filled them up for ME, because I frequently made a huge mess otherwise)
5. Pour regular cooking oil into your diesel car. It works, as long as it's not freezing cold, but it's expensive!
6. (Eventually) You can buy biodiesel at Chevron, but it's 85% gasoline and 15% biodiesel! Sometimes only 5% biodiesel! And it's only available at a few stations!
(Looks like now it's 20% biodiesel and 80% "renewable diesel?" Looks like they just shut down two biodiesel production plants in the Midwest bc they weren't selling enough? SOMEONE needs to start telling people you can just put that stuff in your diesel car, no modifications needed, and that diesel cars are designed to run forever, unlike gas cars.)
Nowadays we actually have a functioning biodiesel station that sells renewable? diesel as well. In Berkeley, of course. But it was A Struggle.
Anyway, I loved running an old 1982 Mercedes on biodiesel. The cars were cheap bc they weren't old enough to be vintage yet (no longer true, but maybe 90s diesel Mercedes are still cheap) and the engines can last for ages. I was driving a car with 240,000 miles on it with no trouble.
Plus they're "luxury cars," so they had features like sunroofs and power windows that didn't come standard for decades.
But I also HAD to get that car if I wanted low emissions, because I couldn't afford a hybrid -- and none of the companies that made other cars, like natural gas etc, actually sold them.
I'd call dealers looking for used or even new ones, and they either wouldn't know what I was talking about, or they'd be like, "oh yeah, I saw one of those once!"
I do have a friend who once got a Nissan Leaf that ran on natural gas. But I think she had the money to buy it new and force a dealership to order it from the manufacturer for her.
And after the old Mercedes had a transmission problem we couldn't afford to fix (someone bought it from us dirt cheap to fix, and still drives it around), we got a used Chevy Volt. Because unlike most hybrids, it runs on electricity alone for the first 30-40 miles, so if you're just running errands you might never switch to gas.
(My brother is an environmental scientist, so I interrogated him about what car to buy and why. This was 7 years ago though.)
We had that thing charging from an extension cord running into the house. Do not recommend. Even with an outdoor-rated cord running to your 220V washer/dryer outlet, it's not a particularly safe or sustainable option.
And at some point the charger got jammed in the stupid port and broke it, so now it's just a frigging gas car. My ex still drives it.
I drove a junker till it broke down (a Lincoln SE), and then got a 2013 VW Jetta from my mom's boyfriend's brother's friend's son. Which is the ideal way to buy a car, because it's really cheap.
It's the ideal car, if you don't care about cars. Totally functional, completely uninteresting, has not had any real problems, runs on basic gas, it is literally so fucking boring that it takes me a minute to even remember what kind of car I drive.
When I get another job, I'm buying a neon yellow electric Chevy Bolt.
Or maybe a 1983 diesel Mercedes with a sunroof, power windows, and hubcaps that match the paint job.

averaged over a 24 hour period an american uses 1.25 kW continuously (10kW peak) (source EIA I can find it or just google it)
A 32 amp car charger (max for low end electric cars like the low end model 3) uses about 9 kW and could charge the car in 8 hours
thats 3 kW continuously equivalent
So thats 4.25 kW continuously with peak being 20 kW
times 165 million Americans for Bidens reduced version of the EPAs plan (originally it was 2/3 of cars)
Thats 700 gigawatts with peaks that are probably 2.8 Terawatts of generation
The USA used 4.23 or 4.18 Trillion kWh last year depending on the source
700 gigawatts continuously is 6.132 trillion kWh
EIA says we have 1.6 TW of capacity
I all that needs to be generated in the 8 hours people are at work we need an extra 2.1 TW of generation. The cheapest power is solar and thats the best for this application anyways wince we want people to charge at work. Solar is $1.16/watt and if we apply a bit of discount for scale lets just call it $2 trillion to build that much solar
Keep in mind that 4.5 cents (perkWh) of your electricity cost is distribution which is 1/2 to 2/3 so we need AT LEAST another $2 trillion in infrastructure
by 2050 that may actually be technically possible
But some environmentalists want us to consider that electricity demand is expected to double by then so $8 trillion
and 30 years inflation bring sus to an average of $12 trillion assuming spending is the same across all years adjusted for inflation (thats not how the math works, it should be more like 13 or 14 but I'm not doing more math today)
Anybody got $12 to $14 trillion I can have over the next 30 years? I promise it won't be a massive fucking waste and you'll totally get a return on your investment that beat inflation

Chasing perfection is something we all struggle with in one form or another—even though doing so is a total confidence-killer. And for six-year CorePower Yoga vet Lara Gobins, discovering yoga was the antidote.
“Yoga creates possibilities,” she explains. “If you are open, anything is truly attainable. I tell my students to let go of any expectations and just allow themselves to exist—your body and breath, free of external clutter, [make] the world seem clearer.”
But for Gobins, a former classical musician who didn’t get into yoga until 2009, it wasn’t a direct path toward enlightenment. “The majority of my life consisted of studying music and performing with live orchestras,” she says. “I was feeling this weird conscious flip in my head. It’s a very perfectionist craft—I was trying to figure out who I was, and I knew that wasn’t me.”

So the lifelong oboist, who had performed at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, quit. “I realized that I was 40 pounds overweight, and really unhappy with my body and where I fit into the world,” Gobins explains. After her friends raved about CorePower Yoga, she decided to give it a try, and left her first class “awestruck, sweaty, and so alive.”
“I’m not a naturally athletic person,” Gobins says, explaining that she felt more at home in a music practice room than on a mat. But she persisted, and lost 40 pounds in the process. “Not only was I physically lighter, but mentally lighter.”
Two years later, she started teaching as a CorePower Yoga instructor—and now joins the New York City team as studio manager this spring. Even today, she strives to instill her message about having compassion for others—and yourself. “That’s all we think about when we obsess with perfection,” she says. “A conversation not going the way it should have, or not eating exactly what I should be eating. In my practice, I work to get rid of that perfection.”

“We’re the first people to tell ourselves what we can’t do, and we don’t ever really tell ourselves what we can do,” Gobins says. “Yoga helps us see what we’re really capable of.”
