According to ChemAnalyst report, “Europe Carbon Black Market Analysis: Plant Capacity, Production, Operating Efficiency, Process, Demand & Supply, End-User Industries, Type, Distribution Channel, Country wise Demand, 2015-2035”. Europe Carbon Black market witnessed a robust demand of around 2.05 million tonnes in 2021 and is projected to grow with a healthy CAGR of 5.81% until 2035 owing to its rising demand to produce Automotive Tires, Mechanical Rubber Goods (MRG), Plastics & Polymers, Printing Inks, & Various Others such as Paints & Ceramics.
Carbon Black, an elemental form of carbon, is commonly procured as fine pellets or powder. Carbon black is usually obtained by incomplete combustion or the thermal decomposition of hydrocarbon compounds. There are several processes to produce Carbon Black such as Furnace Black process, Thermal Black process, Acetylene Black Process, Gas Black process, Lamp black process, etc. Currently, the primary manufacturing method to produce carbon black is the Oil furnace method. This production process utilizes a closed reactor where heavy aromatic oils are atomized under temperature and pressure-controlled conditions. This feedstock is introduced into a system of preheated air & hot gas stream where it vaporizes and then pyrolyzes to form microscopic carbon particles. Steam or water sprays are used to control the reaction rates in most furnace reactors. The carbon black produced is conveyed through the reactor where they are cooled and collected in bag filters.

Depending on the type, Carbon Black is segmented into Rubber & Specialty segments. Rubber Carbon Black is further classified into major two types based on application which are Automotive tires & Mechanical rubber goods. For Automotive tires, Tread grade & Carcass grade carbon Black are used. ASTM is a classification used to distinguish carbon Black. ASTM rubber grades can be divided into two basic categories: highly reinforcing grades (Tread line) and semi-reinforcing grades (Carcass line). Highly reinforcing grades are identified by ASTM numbers in the 100, 200 and 300 series. These materials are used in tire treads and mechanical rubber goods applications, where they offer good abrasion resistance which is directly related to tread wear. Semi-reinforcing grades are identified by ASTM numbers in the 500, 600 and 700 series. Semi-reinforcing carbon black is used in rubber components requiring low heat build-up during dynamic stress. While Specialty Carbon Black is used for various applications such as Paints & Coatings, Polymers & Plastics, Printing Industries, etc. and their demand is governed by the level of development in these industries.
Carbon Black serves a large number of end-user industries. Automotive Tires for Replacement & New vehicles covers nearly 70% of the market and this is anticipated to grow in coming years due to a significant boon in automotive industries which is driving the demand for tires. Carbon Black provides mechanical strength to tires and prevents wear & tear to a large extent. Another major end-use is Mechanical Rubber Goods which utilize Carbon Black in the applications for industrial rubber products other than the tire, of which half of them are for automobile parts and components. This indicates that more than 85% of carbon black is used for automobile purposes and the essential role of carbon black in tire and automobile industries. MRG is also utilized for manufacturing Hoses, Belts, Bicycle Rollers, Rubber food & pharmaceuticals uses. The other end-user industries utilize specialty segment of Carbon Black that covers approx. 15% of the Carbon Black market. This segment has a product mix divided into four sectors: Coatings, Polymers, Printing and Special Applications. The product is used for making wires, cables, pipes, adhesives & sealants, engineering plastics, synthetic fibers, film insulation, inks & toners, batteries, textiles and has numerous applications in the buildings & construction sector.
The growing population coupled with rapid urbanization and industrialization along with increased per capita income have prompted improved quality of life thus creating more demands for Carbon Black for tires & vehicles parts in automotive & rubber-based industries which require Carbon Black. Increasing Infrastructure and growing construction of Malls & Shopping Complexes are further driving the consumption of MRG grade Carbon Black for use in the Escalator, conveyor belts, etc. The increasing use of Engineering plastics for their vast application in aerospace industries, and the development of infrastructure of renewable energy sources such as windmills are driving the consumption of the product
Country-wise, Germany is a manufacturing hub of automobiles & therefore it consumes the largest demand share of the Carbon Black having consumption of more than 35% in the European region. It is anticipated to assert its dominance over other countries in the forecasted period as well. France, Russia & Italy follow Germany in terms of demand in the Europe Carbon Black Market owing to the presence of emerging automotive companies. The Carbon Black market is expected to grow at a promising pace through 2035 fueled by ongoing development projects in the Automotive Tires industry and specialty segments. UK, Spain & Poland are other major countries consuming carbon black.

“Carbon Black is identified as an extremely useful petrochemical, which is employed in the vast majority of end-user industries. Hence, a wide range of industrial & manufacturing applications is projected to propel the Carbon Black market growth in the forecasted period. Rapidly growing industries such as Automotive tires, Mechanical Rubber segment, Paints & Coatings, Printing Ink, Engineered Carbons and polymer Fibres, Textiles, and special applications are heavily dependent on it. Carbon black is the most extensively used and economic rubber reinforcing agent (typically called rubber carbon black) in tire components (such as treads, sidewalls, and inner liners), in mechanical rubber goods (“MRG”), including industrial rubber goods, membrane roofing, automotive rubber parts (such as hoses, sealing systems and anti-vibration parts) and in general rubber goods (such as belts, hoses, gaskets and seals). Owing to all these applications of Carbon Black, a rise in its demand is projected to drive its market growth over the forecast period and offer various openings for manufacturers to expand their existing capacities and fill the demand-supply gap in future.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research based global management consulting firm promoting ChemAnalyst.
