Happy Birthday Ian MacIntosh Black , born June 27th 1941 in Inverness.
Long before David Wilkie became Scotland's best known swimmer we had Ian Black. This remarkable Scot aged just 9 showed an early talent for swimming taking part in the annual swim across the Moray Firth from Kessock to Inverness!
When his father’s job took the family to Aberdeen in 1953, the ideal school for Ian was Robert Gordon’s College with its own swimming pool. By the age of 14 he was selected for the full Scottish team winning medals at Commonwealth, European, and only narrowly missing out on an Olympic medal.
Although he never won an Olympic medal it takes nothing away from how fantastic a swimmer Black was, at the 1958 European Championships in Budapest he got gold in the 400 metres, 1500 metres freestyle and the 200 metres butterfly events. No swimmer has managed to repeat this feat. That same year he got three more Commonwealth Games medals gold for the 220 yards butterfly, silver for the 440 yards freestyle and silver for the 4 x 220 yards freestyle relay. The Olympic medal that eluded him was very unlucky, he posted the same time as the Australian John Konrads in the men's 400-metre freestyle he was placed fourth!
Ian also broke two world records during his swimming career, a proud Scot, when competing for Great Britain, he would proudly display his Scottish identity by wearing a MacGregor tartan dressing gown poolside.
Ian still holds one record to this day, he became BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, the first Scot to win the award and still the youngest person to hold the trophy.
His medals, titles, world and European records made Ian Black one of the finest swimmers to have come from Scotland. In November 2002 Ian Black's achievements were recognised as he was among the first 50 men and women to be inducted in the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.
There's a clip of Ian receiving The Sports Personality of the Year Award at the ling here https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/sports-personality/24569429?fbclid=IwAR1x32H2GKQlw-6UjQ1zIrsjun6wbYOonj7Zn-pHlNg5GrlsdGn8_AfxyV0

surya bonaly being a victim of racism and surya bonaly being a very successful skater are two statements that can and should coexist
backflip being banned because isu was mad a black woman did it however should not exist because it was never banned because of surya and it's disingenuous to her career that she's reduced to the backflip

Lea Schüller/ The best day of our life
The Euros should have been her tournament. And it startet as such. Scoring the first goal in Germanys first match.
But then Covid happened.
The morning after the match Lea woke up with a headache and a sore throat.
With a sinking feeling she stood up and called their team doctor telling him they should probably do a test. And how right she was. As soon as she looked at the test sitting on the little table in her room. Two strips. She cursed and started coughing almost instantly.
She never had it before and now she got it at the worst time possible.
After sitting in her room trying to understand and accept that she wouldn’t be playing in the next few matches, she called you.
You were at a team game night when your phone ringed. Looking at the caller you frowned.
Lea and you had decided to only call after either of you played a game as to not loose to much focus.
Leah had looked at your phone over your shoulder while you were still unsure on what to do.
“Go on Y/n. She wouldn’t call you if it wasn’t important.”
You thanked your captain and accepted the call walking out of the room to be alone.
“Lea? Is everything alright? Why are you calling?”
As soon as she started to talk you heard her raspy voice and the slight cough she tried to cover up.
“I am positive. I’ve got covid. Baby, I don’t now what to do. I am out for at least the next to games.”
Your heart sunk for her. You know how hard she had worked for this tournament and she had such a good game yesterday.
“Lea, I am so sorry. I wish I could be there with you.”
“No Baby, even if you could I wouldn’t let you. It is enough that I am not able to play. No need for you to get sick too.”
You couldn’t help but smile.
“You are so strong love. You will be back before you now it. Even stronger as before.”
You didn’t know how wrong you were.
After five days in quarantine Leas test was finally negative and she was allowed back on the pitch.
But even tho she had the all clear to play again Martina decided to not play her. So while Lea had to sit on the bench,
Alex played the tournament of her life. She was happy for her teammate but she couldn’t help but feel down. She didn’t play another minute in the tournament until the day of the final.
Alex injured herself in the last training before the final and Lea was told she potentially would be starting in the final.
As soon as she heard the new she wanted to call you but that wasn’t possible. You yourself would be playing in the final against her. England vs Germany. She vs you.
So when you read her name on the German starting line up you were happy and scared at the same time. You had talked about the possibility of playing against each other but you somehow you hadn’t thought that it would really happen.
Georgia must have noticed your mood change as she came over and pulled you into a hug. “Nothing will change between you two. You love her, she loves you. And after the this game we will all be teammates.”
You couldn’t help but smile.
“Thank you G. You now, if we win..” She interrupted you “You mean when we win.”
“Of course, when we win, we will be teased endlessly when we are back in Munich. I can’t wait what you will have to do at you initiation.” You laughed while Georgia groaned.
You looked at Lea when you were standing in line waiting to finally walk out into a sold out Wembley. Once you caught her eyes you smiled at her and she smiled back. Instantly you felt calmer and you let out a small sigh. “Whipped” Keira whispered into your ear. You just look at her with a raised eyebrow looking pointedly at Lucy’s hand that is rubbing soothingly over her shoulder. But before anymore could be said Leah started to walk outside and you followed your captain.
121 Minutes. You were exhausted. But as the final whistle sounded you couldn’t help the scream that left your mouth. Running to your teammates you started to celebrate. You were European Champion. You loved the feeling.
But when you looked at the German girls you heart sunk. Most of them were sitting on the grass, tears running down their faces. You searched for your girl. Desperate to hold her, to console her, to tell her that everything would be alright.
Lea didn’t know what to do. She knew she didn’t play as good as she could have. It was hard to play in a final after not playing a single minute since the first game. But she couldn’t help but blame herself. She knew it was a team sport but still.
She was on the verge of breaking down, when she was suddenly embraced in a tight hug. “I am so proud of you. You played so well.” You said but Lea couldn’t help the tears that were rolling down her cheeks. “Not good enough” You hugged her tighter and you felt how Lea relaxed into you.
“You played so so good. I know that this wasn’t how you hoped the tournament would go, but you just played in the final. You can be so proud of yourself. I am so proud of you!”
“Can I kiss you?” You were surprised by Leas request but who were you to say no. So you leaned in and kissed her. You ignored the wolf-whistle’s that erupted around you and deepened the kiss even more.
After you pulled away Lea smiled at you. “You now, I love it and I hate it at the same time. I am so proud of you, Schatz. And I am so happy for you but I can’t wait to play on the same team with you again.”
You kissed her on the forehead before she told you to go celebrate with your teammates.
Lea watched you walk back.
“Du bist so verliebt. Ich hab dich noch nie so gesehen. Wenn ich nicht zur Hochzeit eingeladen bin, dann rede ich nie wieder mit dir.” Said Lena once she reached her best friend.
Lea stiffened, thinking about the ring box that was sitting in her bag.
“Lena, ist es der falsche Zeitpunkt sie zu fragen?”
“Was? Du hast einen Ring? OMG Lea! Ich glaube du würdest den Moment für Y/n nur noch unvergesslicher machen.”
And with that Lea had made up her mind. After you got the medal and lifted the trophy Lea watched as her girl came running up to her and in that moment she knew she was doing the right thing. So when y/n reached her Lea got down on one knee and watched as you gasped.
“This tournament had so many ups and downs for us. And while it may not have been the tournament I dreamed of you certainly are the girl I always dreamed about. You are there for me when I am feeling down and help me up again. I love you more than anything and I hope to be the that person for you. I want to live my whole life with you by my side. Holding more trophies together and fighting thought thick and thin together. So I want to ask you, Y/n will you make this my dream tournament, my dream day by becoming my wife? Will you marry me?”
Lea watched as tears fell down you cheeks and you started to frantically nod “A thousand times yes, Lea! I love you so much! You made this the absolute best day of my life.”
After Lea put the ring on your finger she grabbed you and kissed you once more.
It may not have been the tournament had wished for. But you were way more important than any trophy could ever be.
* Du bist so verliebt. Ich hab dich noch nie so gesehen. Wenn ich nicht zur Hochzeit eingeladen bin, dann rede ich nie wieder mit dir- You are so in Love. I have Mercer seen you like this before. If I am not invited to the wedding I will never talk to you again.
* Lena, ist es der falsche Zeitpunkt sie zu fragen?- Lena, is it the wrong time to ask her now?
* Was? Du hast einen Ring? OMG Lea! Ich glaube du würdest den Moment für Y/n nur noch unvergesslicher machen- What? You’ve got a ring? Oh my God Lea! I think you would just make the moment even more unforgettable for Y/n

I kept wondering why would Natalie be the Antler Queen's favorite, if Lottie's the most connected... Then, I remembered.
Lottie's the oracle of a God.
Natalie's the champion of a God.

Milo of Croton
Artist: Joseph-Benoît Suvée (Flemish, 1743–1807)
Date: 1763
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Groeningemuseum, Bruges, Belgium
Milo of Croton
Milo or Milon of Croton (late 6th century BC) was a famous ancient Greek athlete from the Greek colony of Croton in Magna Graecia.
He was a six-time Olympic victor; once for boys wrestling in 540 BC at the 60th Olympics, and five-time wrestling champion at the 62nd through 66th Olympiads. Milo kept on competing, even well after what would have been considered a normal Olympic athlete's prime; by the 67th Olympiad, he would have been over 40 years of age. He also attended many of the Pythian Games.
His historicity is attested by many classical authors, among them Aristotle, Pausanias, Cicero, Herodotus, Vitruvius, Epictetus, and the author of the Suda, but there are many legendary stories surrounding him.
Diodorus Siculus wrote in his history that Milo was a follower of Pythagoras and also that he commanded the Crotonian army which defeated the Sybarites in 511 BC, while wearing his Olympic wreaths and dressed like Hercules in a lion's skin and carrying a club.
Hereupon the Sybarites took the field with an army of three hundred thousand men. The Crotonians had but an hundred thousand, which were commanded by Milo the wrestler, who at the first onset put to flight that wing of the army which was opposite to him: for he was of invincible strength, and had courage answerable to his strength, and had been six times victor at the olympic games; when he began his fight, he was crowned with olympic wreaths, wearing (like Hercules) a lion's skin and a club; at last he gained an absolute victory, and thereupon was much admired by his countrymen.
Milo's death became a popular subject in art in late Italian Renaissance sculpture, continuing to around 1900, allowing the sculptor to show his skill in a dramatic anatomical pose. It was a more compact equivalent of the Roman group of Laocoön and His Sons.
