Sunday 24th November 2024
It was a gorgeous start to the day. Sunrise was around 5.40, and the sun took over right from the very start as it dominated the clear blue skies. The parakeets, cockatoos, and butcher bird resumed their squawking and returned from the direction to which they went at sunset. Their concophony sounding very much like car tyres squealing around a racetrack, persisting in bursts of several minutes, its decrescendo dying to a steady conversational mutter and then as though on mass they remember something they meant to say, it all starts up again. Dawn is such a fascinating time of day here, wherever you are in this fantastic country. The birdsong is unbelievable.
We set off after breakfast for the lake. This was to be a bit of a sortout day, because tomorrow we make a four and a half hour dash to the coast at Townsville where upon we check in the Ford to Europcar and pick up a smaller SUV from Mr Avis. It looks like there's going to be a bit of a penalty to pay on the mileage we've covered. We are over budget by a bit of a margin!
Before our lakeside visit, we travelled to the edge of town on Flinders to take a look at the local cemetery. Gloomy subject but interesting. Rumour has it that the original cemetery was across the road from where it is now and had been moved in the late 1800s. Apparently, there are no council records to confirm, although, from memory, the council offices had burned down at some stage, no doubt destroying said info. To add a little intrigue, there's one remaining grave in the old position. It is of a Jewish 22 year old lady, Jeanette Tolano, who died giving birth in 1883. Interestingly, that is Jewish year 5644. It is said that the solitary grave was not moved due to religious reasons. People were dying to get to the new cemetery by the mid-1880s and it is still in use today. There were 2 graves that stole my attention and were of accidental killing. George Galton was a fireman on the down 11 train travelling from Hughenden to Richmond when near midnight on 1st December 1938, there was a head-on collision with a light train and van in what was to become known as the Moselle Railway Collision. The inquest notes say there was no evidence of alcohol and the signals were working correctly, according to a witness. Very sad events, the three dead were both drivers and George, our fireman. These are the problems associated with single track and why tokens were introduced in the UK. So, after cheering ourselves thus, we set off for the lake. Man made, the lake was built in 2018, funded mainly by the Australian Government Building Better Regions scheme, and covers 59 acres. Clearly, this is still a new venture, but they have created a terrific amenity, and the naturalisation process is well under way with fish, wildlife, and birds abundant. We walked its perimeter, amused by a boat owner who bothered to load his craft onto a body of water, which is not, after all, Lake Windermere!
A brief respite back in the house, cleaning the Ford and doing some sorting for an early push to Townsville. Then, back to the lake, enveloped in warmth to watch the sun go down and enjoy this wonderful experience with a glass of Coopers Pale Ale and nibbles. Perfect, why can't we do this st home! Then we found ourselves talking to a young couple who had just got engaged and were planning their honeymoon for 2026 in Scotland. Congratulations all round.
We have liked Hughenden, but I wouldn't say it's been the best outback town we've stayed in. Sadly, as we approach Townsville, we shall officially leave the Outback in favour of the more civilised but perhaps more predictable East Coast. Everyone is warning us that we will be leaving the temperatures behind in favour of the more temperate coastal areas. Perhaps more people, too?
ps. As we have travelled through Northern Territories and now Queensland, we have had problems buying alcohol because of the strict rules limiting licensing hours and ID. Then we found certain everyday items are locked away in supermarkets. Deodorants are restricted because people get high by sniffing them, which I thought was their purpose!!
pps. Later, we watched 'Last Cab to Darwin' on Netflix. It's a slit your wrists film about a terminally ill taxi driver who is offered assisted dying. The thing is, apart from the main theme, he is driving through all the places we have just been.

Most rental cars in Malta operate on unleaded petrol. Petrol stations are scattered across the island, with many offering self-service pumps. It's important to return your rental car with the same amount of fuel as when you picked it up to avoid extra charges.
Regarding insurance, it’s recommended to opt for full coverage, which can save you from hefty expenses in case of an accident or damage. Car rental Malta airport Check with your rental company about what is included in the insurance and consider purchasing additional coverage if needed.

Sunday 17th November 2024
As we sat having breakfast in our little back garden and reading the UK news on our phones, we note all the similarities here. Midwives are threatening industrial action over pay, politicians are admitting taking freebies, trade tariffs with Trumps USA are a worry, housing shortage, 3 year waiting time for operation on public health system, banning under 16s from using social media, high inflation, moaning about paying £1/ litre for petrol/ diesel..... The list goes on.
The next stop is Cloncurry, only a couple of hours up the road, through endless outback with nothing of note on route. Except for Mary Kathleen. In the late 1950s, this was a town, an almost utopian town.
On Sunday 4 July 1954, Norm McConachy and John Walton were making their way along a dry creek when their truck broke down with a loose lead on a spark plug. McConachy is said to be the one who actually took the Geiger counter out of the truck and turned it on. As he continued walking up the dry creek bed, the instrument needle reportedly went off the scale. McConachy then called John Walton who was coaxing their broken-down vehicle back to life. The ore body was then discovered by following a 1.5 kilometre trail of radioactive boulders along the drainage system. The claim was pegged, and an application for a mining lease was lodged at the Mining Warden's office in Cloncurry
The deposit was named Mary Kathleen in honour of Norm McConachy's wife, who had died shortly before their discovery. And so it was that the very valuable commodity Uranium was discovered. The town of Mary Kathleen was constructed in just one year to serve the mining operation which commenced in October 1956 with the treatment plant commissioning in June 1958. The contract was to supply UK Atomic Energy Authority with £40M worth of Uranium Oxide. In the first five years, 4080 tonnes were produced, shipped in 44 Gallon drums to England.
The community built in Mary Kathleen comprised 1,100 families and 200 single men. The town was well equipped with an Olympic size swimming pool, schools, churches, pubs, restaurants, library, cinema, sporting club, general stores, two banks, milk bar, cafes, and hospital. They really did have a modern town, with everything they needed. Rio Tinto, their employer, charged families $8 per week for a 2 bedroomed house, free electricity, no rates, free amenities, and good pay. During the years 1956-1963, a 23 acre market garden was established to provide fresh fruit, veg, and eggs for the town. All they had to was go mine large quantities of a nasty radioactive substance like Uranium.
By 1963 the contract with the UK had been satisfied. A second phase of mining was completed between 1974 and 1982 shipping Uranium Oxide to Japan. After that, the production finished, the buildings were dismantled and sold leaving empty streets of concrete slabs, dwarf walls, tumble weed and a monument to the town's completion. Very little now remains that could demonstrate the vibrant town that once stood there, the lives that it would have represented, the vitality of human day to day existence, testimonies of happy enriched lives, or even tales tinged with sadness, gone with so little to show for it.
Once again, Mr Europcar would've slept uneasily as we followed the brown sign and uphill to the quarry along a very poor road, partially paved, partially unpaved, but together with the grandaddy of all potholes. The nuts and bolts shuddered and shook until we reached a distance of 6km and felt compassion for the Ford and completed the rest of the journey on foot. So we trudged, hatted, up the stony road a further kilometre until the vista opened and there in its glory was the long disused quarry with its pyramid stepped sides of sheer granite leading down and down to assure blue waters, lying so still far below us. The use of this place was dissolved in 1982 and has lain undisturbed, dormant, relatively unvisited ever since. Apart from 4x4 vehicles, it is unapproachable, largely unsigned, on the tourist trail, but difficult to find or access. In the time we were there 3 other 4x4s managed the distance and poor roads. But for us, the experience was well worth the effort, to see the abandoned town where the people who worked this place lived their lives and then the relic of their labours now living its eternity in peace and tranquility now the big earth/ rock movers, the dust, the dirt have now long gone, a monument that tells its own story if anyone can get to listen to it.
Completing our journey to Cloncurry was simple once we managed to find our way out of the abandoned town. In their flight, all signs back to the Barkly Highway had gone!
Happy Birthday, Karen x
ps. We went out for a little walk around the little town at around 8.30 tonight, so warm, and it's like a ghost town. All shut up for the night. These Aussies really are party animals. Worst thing is the Cloncurry Baker's. We'd heard nothing but good things about the famous Cloncurry Curry Pie. Disastrously, the appalling news stuck to the baker's window stated that due to some miscreant member of staff not showing up and letting everybody down, let alone the whole town down, the Cloncurry Bakers will remain closed!!! Bang goes my pie then.
pps. It has to be stated firmly here that this is definitely a neat, tidy, clean, and comly town of charming character. It is a complete surprise and exceeds our expectations by quite a long way. We shall do well here, I feel on our two nights.

Car Hire Girona Airport
Car Hire Girona Airport
Enterprise's Brad and Dave show how you get UK car hire with US customer service. We inquired several times and finally (around noon) decided that JB rent-a-car had breached the contract and we demanded restitution of our money. After air travel, choosing an airport rental car service makes for a convenient and stress-free way to get you on the road as soon as possible. And rental is based on the age and type of model of taxi leased. Wherever you decide to go, you'll find we're based at more than 1,300 locations in 99 countries worldwide - you can rent a car at the airport when you land, or just visit us downtown for quick and easy car rental. You no longer have to depend on a taxi or other transport system but can have a car of your choice to move around as and when you like to. It is not just for people who are visiting Dubai but even the locals can also best rent a car Dubai if they cannot access their own car due to any reason.
In fact, you can even consider getting luxury car hire services for your grand Holiday. First I asked at the airport about their vehicle fleet because I know that airports all around the town started to offer a car service. It's a car rental company that provides customers with peer to peer car rental services. Free to book, modify and cancel: Unlike other car rental comparison sites, we don't charge najam vozila sa vozacem any fee for booking with us and for modifying or cancelling your reservation. AND - thanks for he tip about rental cars at DEN. Our global locations offer a selection of cars to suit a wide range of needs, from city run-arounds to family saloons and people carriers. It connected with respected travel companies like Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, others including other offline travel agencies.
By selecting the size of a car, we can make the family vacation to be more comfortable: for example, an estate car is more ideal that time, since all the luggage and even the baby stroller or other bigger stuff shall be packed in the vehicle. It's unnecessary that one may get you a car hire to visit the town just in the airport. Founded in 1914, Sixt's goal in retiring rental cars from its fleet has always been to create the best overall used car buying experience. Green Motion Milano Malpensa Airport offers their rental customers the opportunity to reduce their excess by purchasing one of our excess reduction packages. Whether you need transport for employees, have seasonal rental demands, or need an alternative to pool cars, we can develop a flexible programme that's right for you.
In any case, the lessees' maximum liability will always be the vehicle's market value, according to the maximum price established in the Ganvam (Spanish Association of Car Dealers) guide in force at the time of the accident. If the rented vehicle is taken over - and the rental agreement has remained in the vehicle - a copy of the original agreement can be asked for during the opening hours, indicated on the website. Brisbane Airport is well connected to the city's public transport network, but often hiring a car works out cheaper. We also offer a wide variety of insurance options, including roadside protection, third party cover, personal accident protection and much more to ensure that you drive away from our Nice airport branch with peace of mind. Forget Europcar Hire and Budget Car Rental, Thrifty Car Rental and Hertz Car Hire, or Avis with their big prices.
Rule 2(l)(B) of Cenvat Credit Rules 2004 excludes from the definition of input services - Services provided by way of renting of a motor vehicle, in so far as they relate to a motor vehicle which is not a capital goods. Additional features: After you consider the services made available, you are certain to get more comprehensive features along with amenities than you get with a motor vehicle rental service that's located far from the airport when you stick to offsite companies. Car rent a car beograd hire at Rome Fiumicino Airport is made easy with Europcar. This means you can pick up your car from the airport but also reach us at our Reykjavik office if you have a problem with your car hire. Hire a car at Wellington Airport with Omega, and you can relax knowing that your very own set of wheels is locked in and ready to go. It's fast and easy to do everything online: use our quote generator, navigate the search process and pick the vehicle that suits you and your travel plans.
I think $2.50 per day of use would be fine, but not for EVERY day of the rental regardless of whether the service was used or not. Our Auckland Airport branch is located outside the airport terminal so we save on cost, and that means we can pass those savings on to you the customer on your car hire from Auckland Airport. Similarly, people aged 70+ may find some companies will charge a Senior Driver Fee, or may not rent to them at all. Whatever your travel plans, you'll need to hire a car that's up to the job. You have stumbled across this page because you were searching for information on rental cars in Manila, or possibly wanted to check out the credibility of JB Rent A Car , one of the most visible rental car companies when searching on Google. Splendid automobiles: Transfer Company always offer very latest and branded type of vehicles which is equipped with classic leather seats , latest navigation and alarming system for safe and secure drive at your destiny.
Various driving companies can be found all around town that rent vehicles or hire well trained chauffeurs to be at your full service. So, my rental is $53 a day. The taxi providers offer many types of cars like a sedan, saloon, SUV, MPV and executive cars along with high standard facilities. It can help associate the local and international travel agencies to encourage the travelers to rent a car bez depozita use their cars, giving them to increase their transaction, profitability, publicity and etc. Only in T2 "Car Rental Center" excepted for Sixt Card Holders, who will be served at our desk in terminal 1. Today I got a rental car! I'm going to spend 7 days travelling clockwise from Queretaro and back again. I've made it to Jalpan (not Japlan as I wrote on my map), three hours east of Queretaro in the Sierra Gorda region.
I've been smiling all day long, it's my first time driving a car since I passed my UK driving test last year in July, my first time driving an automatic since 2019 and my first time driving alone since 2018. I needn't have been worried, it's been fine. Hilariously the Europcar rental didn't accept my UK license because they had computer software which said there was only a 44% chance the photo on it (of me aged 17) was me, so I am using my American license with a more modern picturemv

Car Leasing Market 2022 by Manufacturers, Regions, Type and Application, Forecast to 2026
The leasing service is considered as a solution to the expanding challenges that businesses confront with their mobility needs, including as vehicle funding and, more crucially, residual risk management. Automobile businesses lease their fleets to other manufacturing companies to deliver their goods and products, while leasing companies prefer to lease fleets from them. Corporates like leasing automobiles because it provides a hassle-free mobility service that includes on-demand mobility and after-service services.
Leasing a car is a system of possessing a brand new or used car by paying to use it for a definite time. Many vendors offer a range of vehicles that can be leased by customers for a period as and when required. Leasing is similar to renting a car; however, the former is for a relatively longer period. It involves two parties: A lessor and a lessee. Car leasing is not as same as buying a car or renting one. It is an arrangement where in a customer pays to the leasing company for the right to drive a car. The monthly payments that are made as a part of lease agreement do not add to the lessee's equity (ownership) in the car. The monthly payments just allow the customer to drive the vehicle for a specified period, which is usually 2-3 years.

Hello! Remember me? I used to write a weekly blog roundabout these parts. I’m sorry; I needed to take a bit of a break from blog-land (apologies other bloggers too, I haven’t even been reading other people’s). I think I just got tired of the sound of my own voice (which, as longtime readers, is a sentiment that you will completely understand). If I’m entirely honest, I struggled to make a start on this post you’re reading now. But a chance remark from my daughter about how my mother-in-law’s sister (convoluted family tie enough for you?) about how she missed my Saturday morning blog spurred me into action. So, thank you, Biddy (you’re going to feature heavily in my next blog, I hope you don’t mind).

Don’t worry, there is a point to this blog (I find it hard enough to write with a point, let alone without one). Ive just returned from a ten-day trip to Ireland, actually. It was just the break I needed – not that it was a restful holiday or anything – we’ve been driving around and visiting relatives like mad things. My husband is half-Irish, and his father’s side of the family are situated around the County Kerry area of Southern Ireland. I’m quarter-Irish myself; on my paternal grandmother’s side, but I’m ashamed to say we have no connections with that part of the family; I honestly wouldn’t recognise them if I tripped over them in the street. Anyway, my father-in-law was also back in Ireland after a recent illness, so we decided to take our annual August holiday there. And it really was a chance for my husband to relive his childhood, as he spent two weeks of his school summer holidays there annually as a kid. I’m afraid to say we weren’t met by fantastic weather (it’s at least four or five degrees lower even than the UK), but that didn’t spoil our fun.
Torc Waterfall
I do love Ireland. The scenery is just enough at variance from England to know you’re somewhere entirely different. I love the space. I love the solitary little houses set apart on their own. The landscape is simply greener than England (probably due the excessive rain, and we get enough), and more undulating. On arrival in Kerry, the town of Tralee was all in a frenzy over the hurling final which was taking place about the time me were picking up our hire car (the staff at Europcar car rental had little interest in handing us over our keys in the excitement of listening to the match on the radio). For the uninitiated, hurling is a bit like hockey with a weird-shaped stick – but bears WAAAAAY more importance over there than hockey does in our country. Anyway, Limerick (who hadn’t won the final for over 40 years) beat Galway by a tiny margin. So flags were flying from houses and cars in every street. Perhaps even more importantly, at the same time, The Pope was making his first visit to Ireland since the 70s – and the country was all in a flutter about that too (you could even buy ‘Pope’ flags and t-shirts in supermarkets. You don’t get that in Tesco’s or Sainsbury’s). I can only wish I’d bought one. Oh, and then there was the ‘Rose of Tralee’ going on all week. It’s a bit like a beauty pageant or a ‘Miss World’ competition that has been running since the 50s, but covering all the counties of Ireland – and parts of UK, USA, and Australia too (for some reason). However, it professes not to be beauty contest – but let’s just say being attractive helps. Like my husband says, ‘you couldn’t be a right munter, could you?’ (I don’t know what that means either). We even went out at midnight to see the contestants on a parade in the streets just before the announcement of the winner (I would post a picture of her, but she didn’t look my way – so, y’know, her loss). And this was all followed by ‘midnight madness’ – which was actually just fireworks and unforgivable music played by a DJ, like ‘Cotton-Eye Joe’.
My husband’s aunt and uncle (Eileen and Jim) had kindly offered to put us up for the duration of our trip. I admit I was a tad anxious about it as I had only met them once or twice – and probably not for over a decade. But my worries were instantly alleviated as Jim and Eileen were just so friendly and accommodating. I just hope we were good house-guests (we only broke two of their showers, so I think we’ll be invited again). In fact, my husband’s Irish family (aunts, uncles, cousins etc.) were all so gracious. We were invited over for dinner by three separate families. You couldn’t hope to meet more genuinely approachable and affable people. And my children were so pleased to acquaint themselves with new family members they didn’t know or didn’t remember.
A proper Charlie
Like I say, we sure did some mileage during the trip. I really feel that we covered every inch of the county of Kerry. The coastline is simply beautiful (in recent years, it was christened The Wild Atlantic Way – very apt; never have I been so windswept). One day we ventured off on an hour-and-forty minute drive to Waterville to take part in a world record attempt – the largest number of Charlie Chaplins in one place. Chaplin used to come to Waterville every year for his holidays and his family still have strong links with the area. My youngest child dressed up as Charlie (it was the only outfit size we could find on eBay and we had to carry the bugger – bowler hat and all – in our already over-burgeoning suitcase). The current world record was set in Canada, and boasted well over six hundred Charlies. Unfortunately, Waterville was at least 400 Charlies short! But the weather was terrible and Waterville really is a bit off the beaten track. Ahh well, we made the local newspapers. My husband is particularly pleased as he is pictured proudly beside his drone.
Gareth, Ibby, and Drone
Don’t get me started about that bloody drone. My husband has always been a keen photographer (the superb title photo is his) and, more recently, a videographer. But the drone is a new member of his arsenal. And yet another reason for him to stop the car, fish out and calibrate the drone, and fly the b*stard thing for fifteen minutes over something that has caught his eye – until the battery runs out (thank goodness). I shouldn’t grumble, really. The drone really does produce some wonderful footage. And he’s only crashed it twice – causing damage that has cost merely hundreds of pounds to put right. So, that’s something. He’s also making an ‘Ireland Video’ as we speak – so I’ll only see the back of his head whilst she’s at the computer editing for the next week or two…
I’m so cold.
But all too soon that ten-day break came to an end; back to reality. I can’t say I feel in the least bit rested as we were busier than ever. But it was a break from the norm and that was much needed. I trust we won’t leave it so long before we visit Ireland again. It’s great to frequent a place that you have real connections with. And I’ve made new friends – family, really – that I wouldn’t have made on any normal trip. It’s just a shame they now feel so far away. But it’s just a short plane-ride away. Even if you do have to trek nearly three hours to sh*tty (and horribly organised) Stanstead airport to get there. Still, it was worth it.
PS: To all my husband’s lovely Irish family (even though I don’t think any of you know of the existence of this blog), thank you again for your kindness; you are more than welcome to visit us in the UK. Our home is yours.
PPS: The Irish are universally worried about Brexit and think it was a huge mistake. I can’t argue with that…
PPPS: I would even consider moving to Ireland but for the fact that you have to remove your own hubcaps and hoover your boot before your M.O.T. (yearly vehicle inspection) – that’s just a deal-breaker.
Top of the Morning Hello! Remember me? I used to write a weekly blog roundabout these parts. I’m sorry; I needed to take a bit of a break from blog-land (apologies other bloggers too, I haven't even been reading other people's).
