The rosy ground frog [also known as the Contulmo toad, Eupsophus roseus] is a species endemic to Chile. These frogs are most often found in high humidity environments, especially near rivers, swamps, and freshwater marshes. Images by Bert Willaert.

More Big Frog News from the Chilean coast: A population of critically endangered Barrio’s frog is found alive; the species is an emblem of the sensitivity and biodiversity of the Valdivian temperate rainforest, and the frog is publicized by local conservation groups as an iconic species. (Kind of like the temperate rainforest of Aotearoa, Valdivia’s forest has a really high rate of endemic species because of its geographic isolation from all other temperate forest biomes in the world. There are 81 endemic reptiles species and 37 endemic amphibian species that only live within 100 kilometers of the Pacific coast, between Atacama in the north and Tierra del Fuego in the south - a count that does not include the other species which live both on the Chilean coast and outside the country’s political borders. Many endemic species, especially plants, are limited to Valdivia’s rainforest. The relative harshness of climate in the Atacama Desert to the north, sub-Antarctic seas to the south, and Andes/Patagonia to the east make Valdivian rainforest a really special “island” of life.)

Here’s some material from a local conservation project [Alliance for Zero Extinction] that uses the frog in promotional material:
Any visitor to southern Chile’s ancient Valdivian rainforest could be excused for missing the tiny and unassuming Barrio’s frog, one of the world’s rarest amphibians. Blending into the riverbanks and streambeds of its forest home, the frog’s stippled, rust-brown back makes it all but invisible to the untrained eye. Its resonant, drawn-out creaking call is often the only sign of this species on the edge.
Barrio’s frog (Insuetophrynus acarpicus) is listed as critically endangered. Once common, the species now persists only in one 10-square-kilometre patch of forest, outside of protected areas and under threat from the clearcutting, farming and commercial timber planting that is fast fragmenting South America’s sole remaining temperate rainforest.
But, along with its endangered cousin, Miguel’s ground frog (Eupsophus migueli), Barrio’s frog is moving from shadow to spotlight as local communities embrace and work to conserve this threatened species. “It is not a charismatic species like the African lion or the hippo,” [Secretary of the Fucha Pitren indigenous Mapuche community] Don Rigoberto says, “but we have a very special species of our own.”
With a history stretching over 120 million years, the Valdivian forests of Chile and Argentina are a living link to the planet’s past, home to a unique range of species dating back to the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana. A biogeographical island, divided from other forest ecosystems in the Tertiary Period, the Valdivian now hosts more than 70 per cent of Chile’s woody plant species, as well as animal life from one of the world’s smallest deer to South America’s largest woodpecker.

El ranario se encuentra al lado del Centro de Humedales UACh, se ubica en cabo blanco aproximadamente 20 minutos caminando desde la universidad, en las fotos se pueden visualizar las siguientes especies;
•Foto 1: Eupsophus Emiliopugini, ISO 50, 46mm, f1.8
•Foto 2 y 3: Batrachyla Taeniata, ISO 500, 59mm, f1.8
•Foto 4: Calyptocephalella Gayi, ISO 320, 80mm, f1.8
•Foto 5 y 6 renacuajos: Batrachyla Taeniata, ISO 320, 74mm, f1.8
