Etoiles operating on muscle memory when the code comes to fight - getting its attention, running to heal, then turning right around, expecting it to be right on his ass to take advantage of his back being turned - only for the code to not be attacking him at all. A usually simple battle made much more difficult, because he’s not the only one there, he’s not the one the code is targeting. Blinded by rose bushes, barely able to see the code, caught in the chaos of the group - fighting one on one would have been easy. Defending others? Much more difficult in practice than in theory
