ASMLP Accountability--Update 6

Once again, meant to make this sooner, but I had a busy end to my week. We're here now though!

Similar case to chapter 9. I wasn't quite done with Chapter 12, but it's time for me to move on to the next.

Excerpt:

Silence. Simone scans his face for any hint of recognition, any trace that he’s joking. His face is scrunched in confusion. Real, genuine puzzlement.

“And… who are you?”

A soft chuckle escapes, then another. Before they can stop themself, they are heaving with laughter, clawing at their collar to get more air into their lungs. Tears stream down their cheeks unhindered.

And then, with a wretched scream, Simone throws themself to the floor and howls. It’s a terrible, broken sound that reverberates again and again and again. When they’re done screaming, Simone drags themself off the floor, fingers twitching.They want to squeeze Etienne’s throat until his eyes pop out. They want to claw their way into the depths of his brain and hollow out the recesses of his memory.

Etienne’s expression shifts from confused to terrified.

A Sharper, More Lasting Pain

Nadia DuPont: Was best friends with Etienne before the book starts. Also has a brother, Ines.... though she doesn't talk to him so much anymore. Completely lost touch with her mom after the death of her mother. As for romantic or sexual relationships,,, she didn't really "do" that. She had a bunch of flings she refused to let go any farther than a hookup or two, MAYBE a date if she was feeling especially optimistic.

Etienne LaChance: Was in love once, decided being in a relationship was getting in the way of his art and ultimately broke things off. That, and him and Nadia got incredibly close which was making it hard for him to focus on having a boyfriend. Has a decent relationship with his parents--mom moreso than his dad. Decent enough friends with Chantal and Luc and the rest of that friend group.

Simone Allard: Has a contentious relationship with their enbei (my term for a nonbinary parent). Very contentious. Very "you need to follow in my footsteps and the moment you don't you are a disappointment" of them. Has had a couple of relationships but ultimately broke things off because said relationships got in the way of their studies... also because they are a Dominant and had not found someone willing to engage in that dynamic with them (until Nadia)

"Please don’t stay mad at me.” Etienne’s pout deepens. “Kind of hard not to be.” “I’ll-I’ll redeem myself, okay? I’ll tell Simone that I can’t make it to their study group tonight. Just me and you today.”

Gods this is a tricky one. Hmm.

Simone has this bright yellow button-up shirt that really makes them pop. Casters are supposed to wear capelets that advertise their major and what year they are--which means you don't get to see as much of this shirt under it. Still, it's Simone's favorite and their go-to on days off or in town.

Etienne has a scarf that's like. Brown and green and supposed to look like leaves and it has those... ummm... dangly bits I can't describe them fringe is the word I was looking for. A fair amount of fringe going on. Similar to Simone, the capelets make it a lil harder to see it but he loves it all the same.

I think Nadia's is a really flowy black skirt that she was def wearing the first time she and Simone met but also it's just a really cute skirt and she's loved it for a long time. Can only really wear it in summer tho cause it's kinda thin material.

Nadia, yes. I imagine she wears a whole assortment of rings and necklaces and bracelets at any given moment. Just haven't decided on what it all looks like yet.

Simone wears little golden ear cuffs and a ring on occasion but not much else. The ring is also a signet. Something from their primary school probs, or from getting their bachelor's in the arcane.

Etienne wears small hoop earrings and piercings in... places. He's fond of cufflinks. He also hides under his clothes a necklace from a family member (haven't decided whom) kinda like those ones you see nowadays where like you touch it and your partner or parent or best friend have a matching one and it lights up/gets warm because you touched yours? Kinda like that.

Nadia mostly ties it back or brushes it out and that's it. She doesn't have the time or energy to be elaborate.

Simone wears a variety of styles. In the book specifically, they have it done in braids for a long while, but they switch to twists towards the end.

Etienne does his best to maintain a "just got fucked" kinda hair situation at all times.

Chantal wears hers natural for a lot of the book. I think she gets braids for a short while but otherwise, natural. Often tied back.

—5— does your character wear makeup?

Nadia wears enough makeup to not look like she's dying and her first scene actually has her doing her makeup to that effect. Otherwise, not really? Sometimes fun eyeshadow if she's having a good day. She doesn't like the feel of lipstick.

Simone likes lip gloss a lot but that's as far as they go.

If anyone put makeup on Etienne's face, he would stab them for sure.

Made the dialogue between Simone and Etienne longer if only to include this painful tidbit:

He swallows again. "We... had a fight," he says, shoulders slumping. "Over something entirely stupid."

So Shae had been telling the truth, after all. "Over what, exactly?"

"About you."

The world tilts. Eyelids fluttering, Simone leans closer. "Why?"

"After all of this time, you still ask?" Etienne picks at the skin around his fingernails, refusing to meet their gaze. Then, "I wanted her to break up with you."

Simone almost has enough pity in their breast to regret their next course of action.

Reaching into their satchel with their free hand, they produce the vial of Serenity. A last resort, they remind themself with a gulp. Setting it between their knees, they move next to the basic sketches they’d drawn with Professor [NAME]’s guidance. A bit rudimentary, perhaps, but they would get the job done well enough.

Snapping their casting glove against their skin, they finally look up.

“Etienne.”

Simone gets my love of books and puzzles and gets to be good at said puzzles because I'm absolutely shit. They also get my neurodivergent traits because I gotta process it through *someone* they also get to be the gifted kid minus the burnt out part.

Etienne gets my artistic side and gets to be good at it because I can't draw for shit. He also gets my internal bitchiness because while I do my best to be nice and compassionate I do have asshole urges so I shove them onto him.

Nadia gets my love of space, my undefined physical issues (because I'm too young to have something wrong and will bounce back 🤪), and my unstable mental health lmao. Also the burnt out part of the "gifted kid" thing.

Bubblegum Pink: If you could only write one genre for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Definitely fantasy! It's already what I write primarily and there's all kinds of subgenres I could lean into depending on my mood! And there's so much that can be done with it. Floating islands? Dragons? Strange magic? Parallel universes? Sign me the fuck up, please and thanks.

Brick Red: Which character gets the happiest ending?

Oof this,,,, depends on the book, obviously, and how we define happy. There's the obvious "everyone is happy" ending and then there's what I define it as, which is "everyone gets what they wanted"

I think Etienne gets the best positive end in ASMLP. Yeah, his best friend is dead and he might be getting sick with the same illness that killed her, but he's not in jail like Simone is and he's gotten off really easy comparitively. However, based on my slightly different definition, I think the answer here would really go to Simone. Yeah, they're in jail now and they're definitely slowly dying, but they accomplished what became their biggest goal of ASMLP. So... interesting way to think about it.

For TOOD, I think Tantirell gets the happiest ending. She had the least to lose for the course of the book, tbh, and if anything gains by the end. In terms of happy,,, that would probably go to Vangelica.

I... think Luriel gets the happiest ending in TWEfA, though I haven't decided yet if he dies or not. Even if he does die, he at least does so after gaining redemption for a centuries-long mistake (though also there's a lot of self-sabotage at play, he wasn't as responsible as he thought)

Macy and Isabella get a happy ending in WTTV, though in a very round-about way.

Out of all of these... hmm. Yaknow what, I think overall, best ending goes to Macy and Isabella

12. if your character(s) had their own new years resolutions, what would those be?

This is a bit of a chaotic answer because I as a person have sworn off NYRs because it's too much hassle, too much stress, and sets people up for failure. I have like. Goals I make but I don't consider them NYRs so.

Simone's is definitely to get their thesis (finally) approved and get approved for funding to go to Elrick. On a smaller scale, I think they would want to also want to take part in at least one semester studying abroad. Smaller goal still, get one research paper published?

Nadia,,,, is about as full of goals as I am. She wants to get her room cleaned up--for good this time. She also has a small stack of books she wants to get through.

Etienne would rather die than ever admit this but he secretly thinks it would be Neat to have at least one painting of his displayed at the college since he's experimenting with mixing magic with oil paints to mixed (lol) results.

If he thinks too long about Nadia, their last moments flit across his mind’s eye. The pitch-black jaws. The unspeakable pain. Even now, after his weeks spent recovering, the thought of Nadia makes him flinch.

He sighs. If she were still alive, him and Nadia would graduate next week. But he knows better. Those last, haunting moments he has of her prove her death. Nadia won’t see today, let alone graduation.

I say a lot that this changes depending on the day but right now irs Nadia DuPont. I put a lot of myself into all my characters and Nadia is no exception. She's kinda become a cathartic punching bag lmao but I love her a whole lot.

Hmmm the default answer is Etienne most of the time but I don't HATE him? If anything Luc is a character I like less but tbh that's mostly because I don't know a whole lot about them beyond them being one of Chantal's partners and that they show up a handful of times. Not entirely sure how to answer this lol
