On Sunday morning, an Ethiopian Airlines jetliner crashed shortly after leaving Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, the nation’s capital, en route to Nairobi, the capital city of neighboring Kenya. Minutes after takeoff, the Boeing 737 Max 8—the same model of aircraft that went down in Indonesia several months ago—lost contact with air traffic controllers. Soon after, the aircraft crashed; all 157 people on board flight 302, including the crew, died. According to a list shared by Ethiopian Airlines following the crash, these passengers hailed from 35 different countries. Several nations suffered over five casualties—among them, Kenya, Canada, Ethiopia, China, Italy, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Egypt. In the hours following initial reports, the corners of Twitter, WhatsApp, and Facebook frequented by African users were filled with shock and horror, mourning and disbelief. The crash seemed senseless, and its human toll devastating. But in the aftermath of the tragedy, many western media outlets reported the news with unevenly rationed compassion. Some stoked unfounded suspicions about the caliber of the airline itself. Others stripped their reporting of emphasis on Africa almost entirely, framing the tragedy chiefly in terms of its impact on non-African passengers and organizations.

In international news published in La Vanguardia today, the findings of Ethopian Airlines on the recent crash of a Boeing 737 Max jet have been released. This is a story many have been following in the past few months, as this was the second 737 crash in recent times. Two planes crashing is not necessarily unique, but the details surrounding the crashes are very similar. In the flight logs of both planes, auditors determined that the same software bug caused both planes to crash, placing the blame on Boeing. In the aftermath of this data becoming public, Boeing’s stock has fallen out of the sky and it has come out that the company may lose a space rocket contract with NASA. Furthermore, both the US and Europe grounded all flights on 737 Max aircrafts, and the Russian company S7 canceled a large order of 737 Max jets. The release of this report today will be another hit to Boeing, as the article states that Ethopian airlines found that the human pilots operated the plane exactly on par with the guidelines provided by Boeing. Basically, the airline is saying that the plane or its’ software (or both) should take 100% of the blame for the crash. It had been suggested that pilots with more skill would have been able to correct the software glitch that led to both planes crashing, but this report suggests the contrary. Boeing’s future hangs in the balance here, as this jet is one of its’ bestsellers. The FAA in America has also come under fire for approving such Jets for use, with employees stating that FAA senior officials have gotten too cozy with Boeing and the approval procedure is much lighter for Boeing than other airplane manufacturers. This story will be one to watch in the future, with huge implications across many parties involved. CCS International news in La Vanguardia blog #1
