The Mackolades are my personal annual film awards, awarded to my favorite (for the most part) movies, performances, and people from all the movies I watched for the first time in 2022, regardless of release year. This is more or less a companion series to Brendan’s Pink Bettes, as most of our movie watching is together. GREAT year for the Favorite Drama category! I knew from the first few minutes of tick, tick...BOOM! that it was winning, but two of the finalists (Dramarama and Everything Everywhere All At Once) gave it a real run for its money. And then TÁR was just impeccable in every way (CATE!!!!!!). Special shoutout to The Godfather for actually living up to the hype and The Batman for being a genuinely good superhero movie. Highly recommend Dramarama in particular to any of my theatre friends that see this.

GREAT year for horror, too! The Menu is such a fun ride, almost more of a dark comedy than horror. I had a lot more actual scares this year than in 2021, particularly in Nope, Scream, Arachnophobia, and Barbarian.

Hey guess what. It was a great year for comedy, too. Barb & Star is destined to join Romy & Michele and the Tragedy Girls as a pair of gal pals that live in my head for the rest of my life. They’ve had this win sewn up since I first saw the movie in August, but there was still plenty of competition. Do Revenge is probably my unofficial runner up - those twists and turn and goops and gags and outfits!

After Halloween Kills won Biggest Letdown at last year’s Mackolades, I went into Halloween Ends with rock bottom expectations, but was pleasantly surprised! From the opening scene it showed it was completely different from any Halloween movie that came before it, and I was mostly delighted by what followed. It’s far from the best Halloween, and has some major problems, but it’s leagues ahead of Kills, and that alone win it Biggest Surprise for me.

BIGGEST LETDOWN

WINNER: Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022) dir. Sam Raimi

I’ve engaged in a fair bit of MCU hate over the last few years, but I’ve held onto the belief that I’d probably enjoy them if I gave them a chance and just didn’t think too hard about it. Well... I guess I was wrong. I really thought I’d like this, the trailers looked interesting and Sam Raimi has a pretty good track record with me. But yeah... Martin Scorsese was right, these are just flashy theme park rides. Absolutely zero substance worth engaging with. What a disappointment, for me and for general culture. Anyway, somehow this was the only movie I watched in 2022 that I went into with expectations that were significantly let down, and I figured I’d give it its own multiverse of mediocrity with the myriad of posters available.

Okay I have to bullet point this one so I can talk about all the finalists.

Cate is THE performance of the year for me. Her take on Lydia Tár is nothing short of amazing - even from the opening scene, with that TED Talk-like scene where she just talks about music for a few minutes, had Brendan and me grabbing each other and whispering in the (otherwise empty) theater about how breathtaking her performance was. I can’t believe I’m giving her lead actress two years in a row (out of three total!) but she really does deserve it.

Brendan and I loved Mia Goth in 2020′s Emma, but she reached new heights in X and, in particular, Pearl. The monologue! The face journey! The everything else! She’s now on the We’ll See Anything She’s In list, and I can’t wait for MaXXXine.

Janelle! I don’t have as much to say for her, but damn she picks projects well! Incredible lady and fantastic performance(s) in Glass Onion.

Keke - #ReleaseTheSpinCut! What a joy.

Okay I adore Michelle Yeoh and if Cate doesn’t win the Oscar I hope it’s hers. Truly wonderful and deserves everything good that’s coming her way right now.

During the Ladies Who Lunch sequence of the Company documentary, I must’ve turned to Brendan at least three times to say “I love being gay” - Elaine’s an icon and a queen and I hate I didn’t get into theatre soon enough to appreciate her while she was alive. (NOTE: If I’d started this category a year earlier, Carol Channing certainly would’ve gotten it for the documentary Larger Than Life, and it felt wrong to not mention that here)

Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present &&&2, a bi-coastal exhibition that serves as both a survey and sequel to the collaborations of Ethan Greenbaum, David Kennedy Cutler and Sara Greenberger Rafferty.

Ten years ago, the artists initiated a series of meetings to talk about materials and techniques, based on their mutual interest in using photographic imagery to destabilize traditional art categories like painting, printmaking and sculpture.

The meetings resulted in an artist’s book titled &&&, in which the three artists imagined themselves as a fictional industrial supply firm. For Greenberger & Greenbaum & Cutler &, the fictional company had a veneer of prestige. For these capitalist outsiders, a corporate symbol of joint commercial enterprise was almost tantamount to success.

The book was released at Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair in 2013 in both a mass market paperback and a boxed, limited special edition print series based on swatch sample catalogs. The intention of the project was lost on nearly everyone, but a few key people became aware of the artists’ positioning themselves as a small movement.  This included the photography curator Dan Leers, who organized a show and catalog of their work, Beyond The Surface: Image as Object, at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center in 2014. 

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of &&&, Sun You has invited Greenberger & Greenbaum & Cutler to mount an exhibition at TSA in Brooklyn, NY. There will also be a simultaneous version of the show at Ditch Projects in Springfield, OR.  The exhibitions at both artist-run spaces feature a backdrop that wraps the gallery with deconstructed pages from the original &&& book, over which the artists have installed works from 2013 and 2023.  The original book is also exhibited, as well as a new portfolio of prints (&&&2) to celebrate ten fruitful years of collaboration, hand wringing and friendship 

Ethan Greenbaum is a New York based artist. Selected exhibition venues include KANSAS, New York; Derek Eller Gallery, New York; Hauser and Wirth, New York; Marlborough Chelsea, New York, Higher Pictures, New York; New York; Marianne Boesky, New York, Circus Gallery, Los Angeles; Steve Turner, Los Angeles; The Suburban, Chicago; Michael Jon & Alan, Miami, The Aldrich Museum, Connecticut; Socrates Sculpture Park; Long Island City and Stems Gallery, Brussels. Recent projects include a solo presentation with Lyles & King and solo exhibitions at Galerie Pact, Paris and Super Dakota, Brussels.

His work has been discussed in The New York Times, Modern Painters, Artforum, BOMB Magazine, ArtReview and Interview Magazine, among others. Ethan is a co-founder and editor of thehighlights.org and his writings have appeared in the Brooklyn Rail, Wax Magazine, BOMB, Paper Monument and others. He has also curated and co-curated multiple exhibitions at venues including The Suburban, Chicago; Lyles & King, New York and Super Dakota, Brussels. Greenbaum is the recipient of the Queens Art Fund New Work Grant, the Silver Art Residency, The Keyholder Residency at the Lower East Side Printshop, Dieu Donne’s Workspace Residency, LMCC’s Workspace Program, The Robert Blackburn SIP Fellowship, The Socrates EAF Fellowship, The Edward Albee Foundation Residency and The Barry Schactman Painting Prize. He received an MFA in Painting from Yale School of Art.

David Kennedy Cutler is an artist, writer and performer who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Cutler received his BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design in 2001. He has had solo exhibitions at Derek Eller Gallery, New York; Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton; Essex Flowers, New York; The Centre for Contemporary Art, Tallinn, Estonia and Nice & Fit, Berlin, Germany. Cutler has performed in various spaces in New York including Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, Essex Flowers, Printed Matter, Halsey McKay, Derek Eller Gallery, and Flag Art Foundation, and internationally at the Center for Contemporary Arts Estonia, among others. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Wellin Museum at Hamilton College and The RISD Museum, and his artist’s books are included in the libraries of the Whitney Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. He has been reviewed and featured in The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, The New Yorker and Modern Painter, among others. Cutler is represented by Derek Eller Gallery, NY and Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton. 

Sara Greenberger Rafferty produces image-based works in paper, plastic, glass, metal, fabric, and video. Her work is driven by an ongoing examination of contemporary and mid-20th century visual culture and considers the ever-changing implications for photographic images in the digital era. She’s also into comedy. 

Ditch Projects is a nonprofit artist-founded, artist-run studio, exhibition, and performance space providing contemporary art experiences in Springfield, Oregon. As a collective of artists and professionals committed to exhibiting experimental artists from diverse backgrounds, Ditch Projects provides opportunities for cultural exchange between experimental contemporary art and our local community, acting as an integral voice within contemporary art discourse in the Pacific Northwest. Since its founding in 2008, Ditch Projects has featured over 145 exhibitions and 275 artists. Growing organically out of the concerns of its artist members, Ditch provides contemporary visual arts practitioners with an opportunity to test out new ideas, processes, and approaches they might not otherwise attempt in a comparable urban center. Over the past decade, the primary focus of the artist collective has been on the production and presentation of new works by regional, national and international artists, with a consistent 10-12 solo, two-person or group exhibitions per season. Past exhibiting artists have included internationally renowned practitioners such as Amy Yao, Diana Thater, Scott Reeder, Laura Owens, Jessica Jackson Hutchinsons, and Vito Acconci, along with regionally acclaimed artists such as Ralph Pugay, Amy Bernstein, Lisa Radon, Tannaz Farsi, James Lavadour, and Kristen Kennedy. Exhibitions at Ditch Projects have been reviewed in Art Forum, Frieze, Art in America, and the New York Times. Ditch Projects has received grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation, The Miller Foundation, the Ford Family Foundation, the Oregon Arts Commision, the Oregon Cultural Trust, Oregon Community Foundation, and the WLS Spencer Foundation.

Not quite a Midge/Lenny prompt: Abe and/or Rose have to watch Kitty for a little bit and bonding happens when Kitty shows how smart she is.

Rose isn't thrilled to have to take a child with her to her tea room for her meetings, but there really isn't any other choice.

Miriam and Lenny are both on separate tours, Abe is working, Joel and Mei have taken Ethan and Esther to the Catskills, and Zelda has the day off.

So here is Rose with 10-year-old Kitty sitting patiently at her table, observing everything that's happening.

Mrs. Greenbaum and her daughter Ruth talk Rose's ear off about what they're looking for in a suitor for Ruth, and Kitty sips her tea quietly, looking from the mother/daughter duo to Rose and then back again.

When the two women leave, Rose sighs softly.

"Ruth's not very bright," Kitty comments. "I don't know how she expects to land someone who likes literature, when it's pretty clear she can barely spell her own name."

Rose blinks and grins at the girl. "Let me get you a pastry, dear."

Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present Night Scenes, a group exhibition curated by Sun You and Dominic Terlizzi. Featuring works by Richard Bosman, Ethan Greenbaum, Matt Jones, Christina Yuna Ko, Larysa Myers, Sarah Palmer, Alan Reid, Vanessa Gully Santiago, Ginevra Shay, Yuri Yuan and Monsieur Zohore.

During Covid lockdowns, I was taking a lot of walks at night. I became entranced with the city after dark—illuminated by artificial light and the melancholy, sexy energy of the nocturnal. I feel like now is a good time for a show featuring artists who work with themes of landscape, night, darkness and illumination.

ARTISTS  

Richard Bosman is an Australian-American, born in Chennai, India who lives and works in Esopus, New York. He attended the Bryam Shaw School of Painting and Drawing, London, and the New York Studio School. His work has been shown at The British Museum, London; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Brooke Alexander Gallery, New York; Freddy, Harris, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; and the 41st Venice Biennale, among others. Bosman is a recipient of a 1994 Guggenheim Fellowship.

Ethan Greenbaum is a New York based artist. Matt Jones has had solo or two person shows at Galerie Jerome Pauchant, Paris; Freight + Volume Gallery, New York; Horton Gallery, Berlin; Castor Gallery, New York; The Richard Massey Foundation, New York; Bleecker Street Art Club, New York; and Buia Gallery, New York. He has participated in NADA, Miami; The Hole, New York; Spring Break Art Fair, Brooklyn; Driscoll Babcock, New York; Miami Project, and a solo presentation at Art Brussels, Bodson Gallery, Brussels. His work has been displayed in group shows at Robert Miller, New York; Anonymous, Mexico City; ADA Gallery, Richmond, Virginia; Galleri Geo, Bergen, Norway; and Fiebach Minninger, Cologne.

Christina Ko is a Korean American artist living and working in Queens, NY. She received her BFA from Cornell University in 2013, and has since then shown her work in Los Angeles, CA, Washington D.C., and in NYC. Selected exhibitions include: “In Good Taste”, Dinner Gallery, New York; “Futures Ever Arriving”, Chelsea Market, New York; “Internal Arrangements”, Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, New York; “Downloading Place”, Wave Hill, Bronx, New York; “Fever Lure”, Selenas Mountain Gallery, Brooklyn, New York; “Crossover: East and West”, Korean Cultural Center, Washington D.C.. Her work has been featured in Gallery Gurls, the Arcade Project Zine, Hiss Magazine, The Fader magazine, The Washington Post, and Ballpit Magazine.  

Larysa Myers studied drawing and painting at Grand Central Academy and textile design at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, developing a love for classical drawing methods and pattern making. After leaving the city and moving to Beacon, NY, she started a family and began a new body of work focusing on drawing. Her work has been featured in Maake Magazine, ArtMaze Mag, The Concern, and will be in an upcoming book by the Drawing Stall. She has shown her work at Mother Gallery in Beacon, and she participated in residencies at the Wassaic Project and Chashama.  

Sarah Palmer was born in San Francisco and lives in Brooklyn. She received her BFA from Vassar College and MFA from the School of Visual Arts, in Photography, Video, and Related Media. She was awarded the 2011 Aperture Portfolio Prize and is represented by Mrs. Gallery in New York. Her work has been exhibited at the Foam_fotografiemuseum in Amsterdam (which holds her work in its permanent collection); NADA Miami with Mrs. Gallery (solo); SPRING/BREAK Art Show in New York; and, most recently, in the two-person exhibition Out of the Folds at Monti 8 in Latina, Italy, in summer 2020. Recent commissions include The New York Times, The New Yorker, and New Directions Press.

Alan Reid is a painter who was born in Texas and currently lives in Brooklyn. He has presented solo exhibitions at Lisa Cooley, New York; Mary Mary, Glassgow; A Palazzo, Brescia and Patricia Low, Gstaad. His monograph “Warm Equations” is published by Patrick Frey.  He curated the exhibition Air de Pied a Terre, at Lisa Cooley, NY. Reid's work has been reviewed by Bomb, Frieze, Vogue, NYTimes, New Yorker, among others. He both writes and speaks about art, on occasion. Alan received an MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD in 2008, a BFA from the University of North Texas, Denton, TX, 2003 and attended the Summer Program at Yale University, New Haven, CT in 2001.

Vanessa Gully Santiago lives and works in Queens, NY and received her BFA from Cooper Union and MFA from Rutgers University. She has presented her work in solo exhibitions at James Fuentes Gallery, Thierry Goldberg Gallery, and American Medium Gallery, as well as in group and two person exhibits at Rachel Uffner Gallery, Mrs, Helena Anrather Gallery, JTT, Jack Barrett Gallery, Marinaro Gallery, Foxy Production, (all in New York); Smart Objects, in lieu (both in Los Angeles); Embajada Gallery (Puerto Rico), The Green Gallery (Milwaukee), C. Grimaldis Projects (Baltimore), and Rosenwald Wolf Gallery (Philadelphia), among others.  She has been in residence at the Vermont Studio Center and Byrdcliffe Art Colony.  

Ginevra Shay is based in NYC and Baltimore. They are a current MFA candidate at the Milton Avery School at Bard College. They have exhibited at Houston Center for Photography, Houston, TX; Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium; PHROOM, Odessa, Ukraine; JEST, Turin, Italy; Center for Photography at Woodstock, Woodstock, NY; Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA; amidst many others. Their work resides in public collections including Yale University Art Gallery Library, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, International Center for Photography, Indie Photobook Library, Houston Center for Photography, and many others. They are a Maryland Individual Artist Award recipient for photography.

Yuri Yuan is a current Visual Arts MFA candidate at Columbia University, New York, NY. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL in 2019. Yuan was a recipient of the Helen Frankenthaler Scholarship at Columbia University in 2020, and Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 2019. She has exhibited work at Alexander Berggruen Gallery, New York City, NY; Make Room Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; The ROOM Contemporary Art Space, Venice, Italy; Lenfest Center for the Arts, New York, NY; Sullivan Galleries, Chicago, IL; Siragusa Gallery, Chicago, IL; International Center for the Arts, Umbria, Italy.  

Monsieur Zohore is an Ivorian-American artist based in New York and Baltimore. Zohore received his BFA from the Cooper Union in 2015, and his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2020. He is the Assistant Professor of Painting and Printmaking at VCU. Recently, he was the 2020 recipient of the WPA and Warhol Foundation Wherewithal Research Grant, and he has been awarded the Socrates Sculpture Park Fellowship for 2021. His work has been exhibited in various venues including Springsteen (Baltimore), Ethan Cohan (New York), Terrault Gallery (Baltimore), New Release Gallery (New York), 56 Henry (New York), Canada Gallery (New York), and Jack Barrett (New York) as well as at the 2020 Material Art Fair (Coyoacan, CMDX). Zohore has also been invited to show at The Baltimore Museum of Art (Baltimore), Washington Projects for the Arts (Washington D.C.), and at The Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus).
