Today I was reminded that the ole Sega Fighting Game series Eternal Champions somehow managed to have two Choose Your Own Adventure Books written in it's universe.
Not sure why the second book shared the same name as one of the Fighting Fantasy novels, but I remember them being fun back in The Day™.

Spoilers C3E109
Dear Departed
She remembers that first night in that land of eternal chill and dark.
Her heart burning with a question, her head full of plans to grasp the answer unhindered.
And then a voice.
"How rare a sight, a star so bright within my domain of gloom."
Him. Death. Fate. Winter.
Personified, no exemplified.
No, Deified.
"I was expecting you," he says.
She can remember the voice but not the whole of it. There are facets missing that ache within her soul like a pained muscle.
Yet his face is lost to her and lost to all because of their bargain.
It had started small conversations, interrogations, and sparing commentary that enlivened her in a way she had not expected.
She doesn't know what saw him engage with her so readily.
But she remembers how things had evolved, the conversations growing longer, delving deeper, becoming soulful, more personal.
She shirked responsibilities for their parlays, delved deeply into lore hidden and forgotten to challenge his assertations.
"You take risks beyond measure; surely you do not miss my company so much that you would seek to join it permanently?" he challenged one morning, observing fresh scars.
"You care for my wellbeing on this side of your door, oh lord?" she had challenged, smirkingly.
"Well, of course. There are no stars beyond my threshold." was his response, wry and witty, in a way one would be befuddled to join with a being so shadowed of countenance. That part she does remember
She also recalls when she dared to ask him about his domain.
"How did you come by your domains?" she demanded.
He had paused, staring at her pensively. How she wishes she could draw forth the lost color of his eyes.
"One I chose." he returned.
"Which?" she asked.
"Death," he stated.
"Whatever for, no one wishes for Death." she scoffed.
"There are things that even my ilk can not shake," he replied, turning away from her. "Though I will counter, if none would truck with Death, then why are you ever within my domain?"
She had conceded his point ruefully, yet as ever, more questions lingered.
"And the others?" she asked.
"They came to me, as all things do when they pass," he stated cryptically.
"Fate can die?" she responded incredulously, "Winter?"
There is no response.
Yet she would learn in time that, yes, even the Gods had endings.
"I am tired." he muttered, holding her hand in his, seeing her as what they had become without realizing, an equal, "Would you help me?"
Had she loved him before then? She can't say, but their work together, the intimate hunt and scrawling of such a work, the bond that it forged, unspoken, unbidden, that... that cemented it.
She loved him, and she killed him, and he thanked her as he went.
The Rite of Ascension
A Funeral Rite.
Their hands were woven together by the thread, and snow and raven down, a mask to hide her tears, dispassion enshrouding grief.
She can't remember the exact moment that he passed, but she remembers the embrace before, leading to...
Leading to...
Dissolution. Dissatisfaction. Dread.
No one knew what they had been.
Death lies slain, and all hail the new.
His Usurper.
Not his Friend, His Peer, His... Love.
Emhira awakens in Hawk Hill, clutching for her heart, tears not fully her own tracking down her face.
Why now does she recall him?
The answer is simple after a moment of call.
Aeor looms above her.
And within it lies oblivion.
Not Peace, not him, not the ending she seeks.
Or is it... should she accept it and find her way into his embrace once more?
Finally, see his face again for the first time in centuries.
Remember all that had, all they had been, not the fractured, fractile story that had been placed upon her by her own hands.
"My Lady, it's time?" her champion states, pushing open the lip of her tent.
Is it?
"I'm coming," Emhira responds, drying her tears as the scent of winter briefly meets her nose.

Having finished Pokemon Sword and Shield, here are my thoughts on the game, both the things I really liked and the things I didn't. I've written this down more to externalise how I feel about it rather than to have it read by others but if you Do want to read them then feel free
On the one hand I absolutely adore sword and shield for giving us treasures like Leon, Peony, Mustard, Calyrex, Opal, etc and really fun characters like Klara, Raihan, Hop, etc, to say nothing of the Walmart brand Kanto legends and the new Regis, all of which were very fun. It gave us some of the best music out of any pokemon game, absolutely knocking it out of the park with stuff like Leon's battle theme being built around the hall of fame motif and the bagpipes in the north wild area theme and everything about Calyrex and Spec/Glastrier's battle osts, and some of the best cities out of any Pokemon game before or hence, with really good accompanying music to boot. Motostoke, Hammerlocke, Ballonlea, Wyndon, all have so much personality and novelty value and they really stick in the head unlike say Coumarine City or Heahea or Verdanturf or Medali. The gym challenge in general was also one of the most fun out of any of the games, with the Champion battle being by far the most hyped of any game. The visuals were really good in terms of the art style for both the characters and the environments. The buildup to battling Leon and the payoff was both very well done and incredibly satisfying. That feeling when you're finally facing him and he throws off his cape while the crowd yells "Leon! Leon!" in time with the music.. chills. While the Isle of Armour was underwhelming in terms of exploration, the Crown Tundra decidedly was not so and there was a real organic feeling of discovery as you moved through the map. Kubfu's training, trials and the final 1v1 with Mustard with the bombastic music and the reveal that he's an ex-Champ was incredibly hype. And absolutely everything about Zacian and Zamazenta, from their buildup to the payoff to incorporating their howls into the music of their battles was great. Hop's story and character arc was well done, even if the resolution kind of happened offscreen and we just saw him after he had gotten over his self doubt rather than see him get over it in real time, although his second character arc of figuring out what new dream to work towards was much better executed. It's really really cool that random strangers will recognise you after you become Champion, and the Battle Tower is really fun, especially now that there are checkpoints and you get to keep your progress even if you lose. Battling Leon's genetically perfect Charizard in the battle tower is my favourite thing to do in the game. Also Leon just looks really good in that fancy red ballroom outfit.
But then it does shit so stupendously bad that I don't know what to think. Eternatus was introduced and killed off in the same twenty minutes, making it utterly forgettable and out of absolutely nowhere, unlike Ultra Necrozma or Xerneas/Yveltal or Arceus, who all had been built up from the beginning and had PRESENCE. I'll not deny that the Eternamax battle and Zacian and Zamazenta saving the day was hype as hell, but it seemed like legends that were built up throughout the story were culminated to deal with a threat that only came into existence five minutes ago rather than 3000 years ago. And it had no consequences on Galar or real stakes whatsoever. Like, the earlier games saw the Geosenge monument destroyed or Lake Verity blown up or Opelucid City frozen or in the worst case, eternal rain/sun over southern Hoenn and the world going dark over Alola. Like, the threat felt Real. Cyrus was going to change the laws of physics. And here we were in Hammerlocke with Eternatus hovering over the stadium and npcs still casually discussing clothes outside of it. Eternatus felt like an upstart side threat rather than the main big bad. Hell, fucking Sordward and Shielbert did more damage than Rose and Eternatus.
Chairman Rose seemingly had no motivation or plan and gave absolutely no explanation for his actions except the vaguest of reasons. We know absolutely nothing about his motives save that he wants to be remembered, he's just the merest 2D outline of a character. At least Ghetsis built up Pokemon exploitation as an issue from literally the first city, and his charcter as a megalomaniac later on was very well showcased. Guzma and Lusamine and even Lysandre had fleshed out personalities and reasonings. Rose's supposed energy crisis comes out of nowhere and seems based on nothing, and the protag and Hop "storm" rose tower for no reason at all, in a very sad imitation of storming the team Galactic HQ or the Silph co building. If they had waited another half hour there was every chance Leon would have just come back after getting impatient on his own, besides which they had absolutely no reason to expect anything insidious from Rose, who had been nothing but decent to them up until then. It really makes no sense whatsoever that someone as supposedly brilliant as Rose couldn't wait a single day to enact his plan to bring about the Darkest Day. Leon was even entirely on board. Hell, if he had just planned it with the authorities first and evacuated Hammerlocke and prepared a task force led by Leon to capture and contain Eternatus, there's every chance he WOULD have been successful and hailed as the provider of infinite energy. If Sonia had been notified about an official plan endorsed by the Champion to recreate the Darkest Day for sustainable energy purposes, there's every possibility she'd have asked you and Hop to retrieve the Sword and Shield as a contingency. There was literally no reason for Rose to fuck it up as badly as he did.
And the sheer wasted potential of Bede and Marnie! Marnie was such a fun character but for some reason they didn't even give her any sort of character arc??? Like, her story from the beginning is that she's literally just a gym Challenger like you and this never changes. Sure there's something about putting Spikemuth on the map but that remains vague and she never undergoes any sort of character growth or faces any significant hurdle throughout the story. Piers just kind of... exists. He's emo and goth and that's all we get to know about him. What drives him? Why is he so opposed to dynamaxing? What are his dreams?? Nope, nada. And I'm not going to mention That scene. You know the one. Team Yell seems utterly flat, pointless and out of place, with no real reason whatsoever for being troublemakers. At least Team Skull was consistent in their shenanigans and Team Star had a solid ideology but Team Yell only seems to exist because the story demands it. It has no organic place within the game. I really liked Marnie but oh how I wish the player's relationship with the character progressed past anything more than "an acquaintance I made on the gym challenge", like it did for Gladion and Hau and Cheren and Bianca and basically every other rival save the bland Kalosian ones. And even the Kalosian ones faced down a God of life/death with you! Marnie just kind of.. exists in the background.
And while I love the concept of Bede's character, you barely get to know him at all and hear his story from others rather than see it play out for yourself. For a boy with seemingly something to prove, he seems weirdly overconfident and uncaring of how much he loses. What is that superiority complex even based on?? He's not like Blue, who was a prodigy, or Silver, who was antagonistic from the start due to being a societal outcast, or Geeta or Leon, who are literally nigh unbeatable, or Volkner or Giovanni, who have good reason to believe they can beat you. He's just super cocky for no reason?? And losing never seems to have any effect on him despite his entire self worth apparently being based on being a skilled trainer for Rose. The whole "rival with something to prove" thing was done infinitely better with Kieran, Gladion, Cheren and even Wally to an extent. Bede just feels like an arse for no reason and when Rose drops him he flits over to Opal with no anguish or conflict at the prospect of abandoning his benefactor whatsoever?? And he comes to terms with his situation offscreen and you never actually get to witness his charcter growth? You would think that losing the very person you've been living for all your life would be at least somewhat traumatic but Bede gets over it almost without even a single breakdown. One would expect a reaction more along the lines of Kieran losing Ogerpon or Volo losing the battle he had spent so long building towards. Another terribly wasted character like Marnie.
And coming to Max Raid battles, the single player experience entirely boils down to "Can I keep these idiots alive long enough for the raid boss to get through both its shields". It's incredible how much you're at the mercy of absolutely incompetent teammates. I mean, who the hell brings a togepi into a raid battle against a colossal Aggron? Why would you even bring that in there? It's so much fun(/s) when you're facing a giant seismitoad with three rock/fire type teammates and they all die in one turn because it used surf. The entire battle turns into just spamming wide guard and life dew just for a shot at reaching the point where you can actually attack the fucking boss. It's impossible to do any sort of meaningful set up, and your teammates setting up wastes a crucial turn when they die in one hit anyways. In contrast, Dynamax adventures and Tera raid battles are infinitely more tolerable because you either have the freedom to set up as you like and are unshackled from your teammates deaths, or else there's no barrier so you can actually focus on killing it before it kills you. It's always been this way but it's so infuriating how gamefreak just does not care very much about the single player experience.
I guess that sums up most of my issues with the game except for minor nitpicks. They keep showing you cool stuff in game and then don't allow you to interact with it. I'm incredibly annoyed that you can't ride the Wyndon Eye. They literally have the giant Ferris wheel right there but you can't ride it. You can't actually order anything to eat at the cafes/food stalls. I know food powers weren't a thing yet but they could've at least made it like the battle court in Hoenn or the Kalos restaurants or the Malasada shops. At least give me in game food to eat. You can't actually stay in the Rose of the Rondelands, unlike the posh hotel in Kalos. You can look at the Hero's bath in Circhester but you can't actually use it, unlike the Lavaridge springs. The flying taxis and the trains have no cutscenes when you use them, which is a stupid little QOL omission, and an additional shame when you remember they DO already have an entire train environment coded in for those two cutscenes you get with Hop.
Overall I had a lot of fun but the story could have very easily been a lot better thought out and it sucks to see all that wasted narrative potential when you play through it. Also holy shit let me wear the champion colours in the Wyndon tournament once I'm champion. It makes no sense that I still gotta wear the white rookie Challenger outfit.

hi i made more lancer smallfic
This one is about Lana Paradiso, Eternal Champion, and Everybody's Idol. An olympian gladitrix, astride the angelic weapon Joya. Together they rule the arenas.
She stood atop a black mirror, and the crowd roared when the lights hit her. From beneath, the mirror writhes and flows around her. She stands on the back of something humanoid, the black mass writhing over it like a sheet. And then she is rising, standing still and eying the crowd. She loved to see them. They loved to see her. The announcer was going over her accomplishments. She couldn't hear him. All she heard was the roar. She raised a hand and it peaked. She waved, and she smiled. She saw their faces. Each eye she could meet, she did, and her wave and her smile did not change.
She, like always, wanted to be perfect for them.
The ink flows up her legs, and blossoms in razors. She is uncut, but the crowd hushes as the black ferrofluid flows and writhes and grows into the shape of lotus blossoms. Foot by foot, Joya is revealed. And at the same time, the lotus blossoms beneath Lana. She moves, snapping her feet together and blowing a kiss to the crowd. A massive motion, both hands, both arms, swept out to embrace them- embrace them all. Her crowd, their champion.
And then she is gone, swallowed by the dark ferrofluid, engulfed and carried deep into the ceramic bone and synthmuscle frame of Joya.
And then Joya rights itself, rolling its shoulders as the mass of ferrofluid shapes to cover its right arm. The famed dueling cloak of the champion's weapon, a shifting and roiling mass that covers the great machine as it begins to stride forward to the center of the arena. It holds out its left hand, palm flat and to the air. And then there is a spear, hovering perfectly millimeters above the palm. And the crowd roars again as Joya lowers its hand, and the spear disintegrates to nothingness. It throws its arms up wide as it walks, sweeping to take in the crowd for its master. The cloak billows as it does, and beneath the stadium lights, the serene face of the Buddha smiles from Joya's chest.
The vocal link hisses for a moment and the crowd dies down- "Good evening, my darlings" Lana begins, body bobbing in the fluid cockpit. The camera, floating in the oxygenated liquid, catches her good side as she winks. "I am to understand someone has come to challenge me this night! I applaud their bravery, and surely you must as well?" The crowd booms back in response, the demes taking shape once more as they remember there are idols not named Lana Paradiso. She clasps her hands and tilts her head, eyes narrowing to glare down the lens, into the soul of every trideo-viewer paying for the experience of her live feed.. "I have heard some very unkind things from the demes of my opponent. I am grateful, ever and always, that we Idols have our demes."
The smile returns, and Joya's cloak settles again around its body.
"But I won't let any of you forget who is champion. Not tonight."

You'd think that I'd have better things to spend my time on than writing but here we are. Also curse you Larian for creating something I feel so passionately about I broke my nay-sayer attitude and wrote fanfic. How dare you. Anyway my durge is a male twink so that's what u get. Durge spoilers btw
“I don’t need any of this. The only family I know are those who fight by my side.”
“You were made to conquer. To devour. You reject my blood, and so I will reclaim it. I will make another who is worthy.”
Everyone looked on in fear, as Scleritas Fel, possessed by Bhaal, raised his arm, lifting Tav into the air and drawing all of the blood from his body in a red mist, and dropping his lifeless body to the floor with a sickening thud. Scleritas’s body wrenched in odd positions, and was ruined from the inside-out before Bhaal left the chamber altogether. The party slowly walked toward Tav’s body, as if it might lash out at them as a mindless machine of death. Astarion knelt down to feel for a pulse, and found none. Karlach sank to her knees, and lifted the limp body up to her chest, cradling his heavy head in her arms.
Tears running down her cheeks, Karlach’s voice cracked, “It wasn’t supposed to be this way, Soldier.” She pressed her face to the top of Tav’s head, planting a gentle kiss on his forehead, and held him closer, hoping that any bit of hope from her heart could bring him back.
Jaheira, hand on Minsc’s shoulder, says quietly, “He denied his birthright power to protect others… and it cost us all so dearly. But I am so proud of him.”
From behind, Withers apparated into the chamber. “Thou hast defied Bhaal, thy liege and father, and doing so hast earned a place among champions and heroes.”
The chamber was quiet, save for his voice.
“But, alas, thy courage was in opposition to the divine cosmology that bound thee to the Lord of Murder. Thou art now faithless - godless - and doomed to wander the fugue plane for all of eternity.”
Karlach ignored his presence, as if he were not even there. So focused on her love, now passed, she didn’t even hear the next few things he said.
Withers continued, “I will not permit that, though all the powers of life and death dictate that it should be so. I, too, still hold some power, and I invest a portion of it in thee, who have challenged the gods, and now liveth to tell of it. Thy fight is not over, and it is thy fight, for one who can look upon Bhaal and oppose him can survive any crisis.”
Quietly, as though to not disturb the group further, “Death will not claim thee whilst I endure.”
Karlach was saying her own piece to Tav now, having completely ignored Withers.
His entire body felt so heavy. The static feeling of blood not moving as it should was pinpricking every nerve in his body, and it was dark. His eyelids felt so unimaginably heavy, no part of him would listen to his commands to move. Brain fog was very slowly giving way, and the only sense from the outside world was sound, and he could feel something wrapped around him tightly.
Close to him he could hear sniffling, and the cracking familiar voice of Karlach. Gently, she stroked his cheek and said, “I’m the one who is dying… you were supposed to live on. We were supposed to have more time, more dates, more kisses and nights together in each other's arms. You were going to stay with me when I went, and then live on for both of us. I…”
Her sobs overcame her. Her face was now pressed into his hair, tears flowing down her face. He heard all of these words, and tears formed on his face, too. His first breath returned to his chest, and he coughed his exhale, enough to pull Karlach back to the present. He slowly opened his eyes, mind still a little muddled, a minor headache forming in the back of his head. He had just enough energy to raise one of his shaking hands up to Karlach’s face, which was now wide-eyed and staring down at him, in disbelief.
In a tired, pained voice Tav responded to Karlach’s laments, “I’m not going to let you die. We will have our fifty more years together. I love y-”
Before he could finish what he was saying Karlach had already pressed her lips to his.
“Don’t ever scare me like that again.”

MY MAJOR PREDICTIONS FOR THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE (SPOILER FREE-ZONE HERE)
Hello everyone, today is the first week after the premiere of the Mario Bros movie that currently got everyone hooked on the brothers...now it’s time to give my predictions in order to see if I already got the plot right:
1. Mario and Luigi were abused by Foreman Spike, and after he threatened Luigi or Mario, they start their business and this is how Super Mario Bros plumbing is born!
2. Their business is not running well and try to go somewhere big to prove themselves and after finding the warp tunnel, the story begins proper!
3. While Mario is clearing the course and already surpassed Peach’s expectations, Luigi is trying to run away from Bowser’s minions within the dark lands controlled by none other than our villain Bowser! He gets captured and Bowser tortures him in order to find out who he is.
4. There is a whole prophecy relating to Mario and Bowser fears him because of this!
5. Mario reminds the Kongs of Jumpman, who once kidnapped the Elder DK and because of this, they want some revenge...DK also gets beaten by none other than Mario, who makes the platform explode and he falls down to the ground, thus the Kongs agree!
6. Bowser gets the news thanks to his spies and orders the lad Blue Spiny shell Koopa to intercept them, which he does. Also, the Spiny Blue Koopa is the most badass character in the movie and meneacing...I am terrified of this turtle, how he smiles....ugh, terror, sheer terror, BUT COOL AND BADASS AND PROND! I bet that he not only resisted Nastasia’s mind-control, but fought against Cursa’s forces until the bitter end, where she threatened to kill all of the brainwashed Bowser minions if he doesn’t surrender his free will. Being the champion he is, surrenders to Cursa and then dies to Bowser who gets mad at Cursa and swears eternal revenge...Ok I drifted up, anyway he is going to be big and speaking of him!
7. The whole Rainbow bridge attack is going to fail for the heroes. Mario gets blasted off by the Blue Koopa and lands somewhere beaten and demoralized after his first game over...DK might be knocked down as well... The Kongs withdrew their support and Peach is without soldiers...now she has to face Bowser on her own.
8. We get a flashback on Peach’s origins...either she was born within the Mushroom kingdom with Humans parents who died because of Bowser or was an adventuress who ended up in the kingdom and took it over in order to protect it. She believes that she has to do everything on her own and would risk her life defending the Mushroom Kingdom. She picks the Halberd and challenges Bowser to battle.
9. At the meantime, Mario gives up and doesn’t want to fight anymore, believing everything to be hopeless and that this is the end of everything, he will die as a failed hero who was just some unsuccessful plumber...that is until Luigi appears, who escaped Bowser’s cluthes either with the help of the Penguins or the Luma or even King Boo...anyway he encourages his brother to fight once more and Mario does so...they might find DK and these 3 fight together against Bowser’s minions who are about to take over the Mushroom Kingdom.
10. Peach nearly defeats Bowser in her fight against him, but he uses a Macguffin against her and she loses, ending up under his clutches just before he could held her captive and promises her that if she submits to his rule and becomes his queen, he willl spare the Mushroom Kingdom...we know how this is all wrong...but anyway, Mario and Luigi fight together against Bowser and with the help of DK and Peach, they defeat Bowser, he falls into Lava and thus Mario and Luigi start their new life as heroes within the Mushroom Kingdom, a happy end with a delicious Cake made by Peach!
11. Also as a side-note, Bowser is motivated by his desire to bring back the ancient rule of the Koopa, who once ruled over the entire world a Mustached Human ended their rule and this Human is the ancestor of Mario and Luigi...
12. Post-credits has Bowser Jr with the Koopalings plot their revenge against the Mario bros for killing their father and swear to defeat them!
How true will all of this be...I wonder as well. I will know the truth later and let’s a go!

Fe: The Myth of the Hero
Tumblr media
The spiritual experience of Fe is called Aler, which is described more fully on this page. Aler is a psychological archetype appearing as the Hero, a specific mythical protagonist who endures a series of impossible challenges and confrontations with evil and is often tasked with ascending to power. Examples of this archetype include Odysseus, Hercules, and Gilgamesh. In symbolic form, Aler is depicted as the sun, a lion, a torch, a flaming heart, and a hallowed sword, which only the noble heart can wield. The Fe hero myth is one of perpetual evolution through adversity. In the most fundamental sense, the archetype represents "that which continues to evolve" or can transcend any limitations. In this mythology, the concept of the malleability of the soul is taken to an extreme, wherein Aler becomes the essence of transmutation itself, or the phoenix symbol. Aler is the purification principle through fire, eternal growth, and ascension to divinity. The Hero then comes to have power over death, as death and rebirth become aspects of Aler and the primary motifs involved in this holy transformation. In the psychoanalytical sense, this symbolism represents the very death of our character, our corrupted heart, our tarnished ego, and our identity - in favor of the adoption of a new heart, a new character, and identity. Those enraptured by the Aler myth will exist in a constant narrative of self-destruction and self-creation, each time chaffing away impurities as their soul is refined through the crucible into pure gold.
The Savior
Tumblr media
In its light form, the Aler myth manifests as a messiah figure, often appearing as a divinely chosen youth set to fulfill a prophecy. The Hero becomes the Savior of the people, the protector of humanity, and takes his place as the Hero King. He is the champion of justice, an exemplar of "the right way to be," and an embodiment of the truth and will of God. We see contemporary examples of the light Aler myth in Neo from the Matrix films, who is prophesied to appear, is granted supernatural powers, and can peer through the illusions of reality after undergoing death and rebirth. We see another example of the light Hero in the Jedi from the Star Wars films; they adhere to an advanced moral system and are tasked with protecting the universe. Less explicitly, we also see an example of Aler in the myth of King Arthur, who was able to wield a hallowed sword after being judged as noble and worthy by some supernatural force. Here, the sword symbolizes divine agency, and the power to wield such agency is bestowed upon those with a pure heart and a suitable character. This is symbolic of how the "right to rule" and to cast judgment on others -the sword being judgment itself- is reserved only for those who understand how to wield it properly and whose intentions are deemed righteous by a higher power.
The Adversary
Tumblr media
In its dark form, the Aler myth manifests as the Adversary, the enemy, and the antithesis of the Savior. In many cases, he is also divinely chosen but veers off course along his path. Both the light and dark aspects have comparable or equal supernatural powers. However, while the Savior is beholden to the will of the people and placed in a position of authority by his good standing in the tribe, the Adversary relies on his power and desires the submission of others to his will. Practically speaking, this can manifest in the formation of crowds and gangs that are held together through intimidation rather than trust, capable of amassing incredible power. Thus, at a fundamental level, this mythical narrative represents an ideological difference between both sides of Fe and how they go about executing authority. The narrative becomes a battle between the strength of the light Hero, enhanced and supported by his kin's grace and love, pivoted against the strength of the dark Hero, who uses fear and control to gain a less authentic power from his subordinates. The light side takes the route of vulnerability, love, and self-sacrifice, allowing himself to be wounded by his comrades but developing fortitude of character through it and the respect of his clan. Moreover, the dark side takes the route of self-protection, building up resilience against the world through an ever-growing emotional chasm and manipulating people at a distance.

Colors That Run Highlights 70
aaaaaaaaaaaa
The party, along with Knutt's Angels, traveled the unpaved path from Aldebaron to Elysium for a few days. The Angels often fell to arguing amongst themselves and switching who they were siding with. In spite of this, they worked well together, communicating without speaking, and they all agreed that Knutt wasn't dead. Farmers along the way perked up at the sight of two combined (and notable) groups, not that the Angels cared.
During these travels, Fea began reaching out for Gabriel's spirit again, repeatedly exhausting herself until he spoke back to her one morning. She expressed some of her emotions regarding the situation and sought out some information about Aphaeleon. Gabriel told her that Aphaeleon is the angel of vanity, obsessed with his own beautiful reflection, much like the story of Narcissus. In order to keep from being distracted by his own visage, he wears a visor or blindfold.
Once the group arrived at the capital, they approached the palace gates. Knutt's Angels led the way, almost like an escort, and announced the arrival of the Light Champion's Entourage. Sandalphon wished the Breakfast Club luck in their battle, saying they all would remain outside the palace to keep everyone else out. In preparation for battle, Valor summoned a large water elemental, which was a little taxing for Slim (but Egg was pretty pumped about it, because... it was taxing for Slim). Everyone marveled a little at the palace interior, lavish and golden as it was. Kattie began playing her guitar as a Countercharm so that Aphaeleon couldn't start right off by charming the group.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fea took the lead and kicked the door open. As the group stepped into the throne room, Aphaeleon gave a smug smile and began a bit of a monologue. No one was playing along with his shtick-- they were there to deliver justice and swift kick in his angelic ass. Aphaeleon insisted this was supposed to be a duel, between himself and Fea only, and suggested that he do something to spruce up the place and keep the rest of the party busy. With a snap of his fingers, the shapes and colors of the room morphed into a new scene entirely. Suddenly there was a cool breeze and pleasant sunshine, and the party found themselves in the palace gardens, full of blooming plants and three stone structures.
Aphaeleon explained that he had become so powerful by slaying all of his-- and Fea's-- siblings, as though he were being encouraged by their mother Rukha. When the previous Abyssal Champion had pulled the dead from their eternal slumber hundreds of years ago, the royal line of Celestial leaders had awoken in their stone mausoleums that Gabriel had made for them. No one could detect them inside, leaving them to wither alone in darkness. Curiously, however, Fea was not in her proper tomb-- rather a non-divine person was there instead (but Aphaeleon killed her anyway). 👀 Aphaeleon then magically awoke the bodies of their slain siblings, and they began to emerge from their resting places. And thus Aphaeleon formally accepted Fea's challenge, referring to her as Semyaza the Adored.

Fea sped off to start swinging on Aphaeleon, nearly fast enough to interrupt his monologue. Aphaeleon reacted by grabbing her mask and then radiant light flooded from him into her, returning the full breadth of her memories to her all at once. Fea's mask cracked under the pressure and she let out a horrible scream. The rest of the party sprang into action. Kattie cast Feeblemind (!) on Aphaeleon, but he was unaffected by the intelligence-dropping effects of the spell. Slim and Valor started blastin', and the latter flew over to where Honor was standing a ways behind Aphaeleon. Honor was solidly Team Aphaeleon, and could not be swayed by Valor's conviction to delivering justice and siding with her friends. Calypso jumped over the lip of the large water fountain in the middle of the garden and ran atop the water's surface straight for Aphaeleon to give him hell.
Tumblr media
It was at this point that Aphaeleon began using a legendary radiant flare action to deal both fire and radiant damage (aka the Anti-Fea Move). Despite having already violated the rules of his previous duel for the throne, he was insistent that he would fight Fea and Fea alone, so he started cutting away at Calypso with his sword. After Calypso dealt him some Hellish Rebuke damage, Kattie added even more combatants to the battlefield with Animate Objects-- a medium one and a huge one. As Valor and Honor continued their argument, Honor revealed that he had been the one to set their home ablaze... killing their mother and father. Valor attempted to fire arrows at him at this revelation, but they passed through him-- revealing that he had fooled her with a spell. He then cast Banishment on her, removing her from the fight entirely. Bastard.
Calypso made multiple attempts to stun Aphaeleon, but he legendarily resisted it each time and continued flaring each turn, wearing Fea down quickly. Fea used Second Wind before sheathing her rapier... and drawing the stained glass executioner's blade. She used this sword to remove Aphaeleon's visor from his face... revealing that he wore a blindfold as well. Damn. Then Aphaeleon hit Calypso for massive damage, and she fell unconscious.
Tumblr media
Kattie attempted to Shatter, but got Counterspelled (a tactic she herself was unable to do a couple of times due to being too far away. Alas). Slim, wondering what Calypso was doing sleeping at a time like this, ran up with Xio and healed the monk with his Boy on Cow ability. Sven, with Valor gone, snarled and frothed at the mouth at Honor, blasting him with his cold breath. Calypso got to her feet and started swinging on Aphaeleon, still not stunning him, but with a couple of crits(!) knocked him down a peg. Then she redirected her focus, moving over to Honor while calling him a lying piece of shit. At one point Honor tried to hit Calypso with a Finger of Death, but he was Counterspelled by Kattie, finally.
Throughout this battle, more and more of Fea's siblings arose from their graves, joining the fray as well. One of them, Ariuk, seemed to possess druidic powers and fought as an elemental beast. Another of the reanimated angels, Sareash, approached Calypso, Honor, and Sven, and formed a picture frame with her hands around them. Honor and Sven actually failed to save against this effect, so they were stuck striking a pose as though they were being painted for a whole turn. Even poor Gabriel lurched into the garden to heal his 'allies.'
With her executioner's sword, Fea landed a critical hit on Aphaeleon, who had began flaring against Slim, but she was not able to behead him, as he was too powerful. But Aphaeleon was starting to look rather hurt. Honor lost his concentration on Banishment, which caused Valor to reappear. She fired off some arrows and cast Guardian of Nature to take on a primal beast form. Calypso smacked Honor around, then spared a second to heal everyone (sans Fea) with a Mass Healing Word. Slim was still looking rather wounded.
Finally, Fea raised her sword and struck Aphaeleon's most prized possession-- his own face. Thus ended Rukha's so-called favorite, and Aphaeleon's reign was over. The reanimated angels collapsed to the ground; Honor was pinned down by Sven. But then the colors of Aphaeleon's body receded in waves, flowing into Fea. She was filled with radiant light, which dislodged her mask. Tendrils of abyss held her being together against the onslaught of radiance, until what formed was a new body of black void flecked with rainbow. Glimmering eyes of multi-colored light opened, taking in the world around her. Then Fea sank to her knees, overcome with her recovered memories and the weight of her deceased family.
Tumblr media
After some time, Fea approached one of the mausoleums, stopping at the entrance. From inside came a woman, seeming to gaze, uncomprehending and empty, at the garden and Fea. The woman was unresponsive and simply stumbled away. Fea let her go, seeming to recognize her, and once again fell to her emotions on the mausoleum's steps.

Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side (1996)
In today's review, I find that a lot of space can lead to a lot of fighting and fury. As I attempt a #positive review of the 1996 Mega CD sequel Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side #retrogaming #megacd #segacd #sega
Often in the face of completion, there are at least two constants, the rivalries intensify, the technology gets better, and the only way up is to go beyond. In 1996, hoping to capitalise on the success, combined with the rapid advancements in technology to play with, it was time for the Eternal Champion to embrace the change for the ultimate outing in Eternal Champions 2 Challenge from the Dark…
