just wanted to drop by and say I am very much enjoying you liveblogging your experience reading narcissus and goldmund. it's one of my favourite books of all time and I re-read it earlier this year, and to see someone experience it for the first time like this is great. I hope you enjoy the absolute rollercoaster the rest of this book is! (btw, the book is even better on subsequent re-reads. if you enjoy it enough to come back to it, I 100% recommend)
haha I'm glad you're enjoying it :D I'm also enjoying the book a lot, I'm halfway through and I can say I did NOT expect some of the places it started going to, at all, in fact the way the first chapters were written in an almost essay-like fashion, I thought the entire book will be something similar to Plato's Dialogues, where the issue of the duality of man will be discussed and presented from different points of view but not that narratively much will change.
I was very wrong hahaha, at this point I cannot comprehend where the story will take me
#Also like... Even though the narration is pretty descriptive about the nature of the characters#to the point that the reader knows the inner turmoil of the characters more than they let themselves know (aside from narcissus)#I still feel like I'll need to read an essay about this book to understand it fjfkf#I MEAN LIKE.#Narcissus early on saying 'Even if you burned our rather handsome cloister to the ground I wouldn't have regretted it' (paraphrasing)#This puts a lot of things into perspective with what Goldmund is doing where I am at right now#But like. Why djdk did Narcissus Dr Jekyll Goldmund's Mr Hyde fjfjf#(in the original Jekyll & Hyde novella it wasn't about separating good from evil but about unrestraining the true nature of man)

The Outsiders except people actually bring up the fact that Pony must have insane memory
#poptart’s general stuff#Poptart speaks#the outsiders 1967#the outsiders#the outsiders 1983#ponyboy curtis#Bro wrote 12 chapters of a detailed book for an essay like he must have amazing memory#even if he did paraphrase certain conversations the fact that he remembered them is crazy#esp when you consider he wrote this probably 7 or 8 months post canon which is insane

Look, at the end of the day y'all are allowed to have negative opinions on Mufasa: The Lion King. You're allowed to think it's bad, or that it sucks, or whatever.
But please, for the love of all that is good and holy can we please stop saying it "disrespects James Earl Jones'" legacy.
For one, HE LITERALLY GAVE HIS BLESSING FOR THE FILM.
And another, THEY DO A FUCKING TRIBUTE FOR HIM AT THE START OF THE FILM.
And thirdly, a movie being bad does not disrespect an actor's "legacy." No, I don't give a shit about what you think the movie "retcons" about the character or how much you hate prequels, you can express that well enough without spreading lies or making unfunny mean spirited "jokes" about his death.
We had this discussion with Stephen Hillenburg, we had this discussion with Cameron Boyce, we had this Janice Burgess, and it really should've gone without saying here, but apparently it doesn't, so we apparently need to have this discussion with James Earl Jones too.
Stop putting words into the mouths of dead people just to shit on media that they are affiliated with.
#mufasa: the lion king#james earl jones#mufasa#the lion king#I saw a YouTube review of Mufasa: The Lion King come out today#The review itself was okay. It was a GOOD example of how to critique a movie and express negative opinions on it#But then I looked into the comments and I immediately wanted to beat myself over the head with a brick-filled sock#So many people joking about how “James Earl Jones” would 'turn in his grave'#Or people legitimately saying shit like how Mufasa being an orphan is an insult to the actor#Even paraphrasing it makes me angry#And this isn't even the first time I've seen comments like this#It's been prevelant for as long as the man has been dead#The worst instance was when I saw someone on the subreddit make 13-paragraph essays in the comment's section of a post related to Mufasa#Much like the stupid Sonic 3 discourse or the “retcon” debate this was one of the most talking points against the movie when it was nigh#And out of all of them the JEJ shit makes me the most angry#Because I fucking called it#When the news of his death hit I had the lingering fear that people will use his passing as a soapbox against the movie#and that being the ONLY shit they offered to give about the man post-mortem#which full disclosure - that attitude is a self-fulfilling prophecy#because it's just as if not twice as disrespectful as what they *claim* the company/writers are exhibiting#I was willing to brush this off as paranoia#but alas expecting any decency from the Internet was obviously a shot in the dark#If I had a nickel every time I saw shit like this I'd have enough nickels to fill up a sock which I can then use to beat them#please... just shut the fuck up

feel like pure shit, just want her back

#james talks#riverdale#miss the whole crew really but Betty especially bc Lili was so magnificent#god as perfect as the finale was (and it really was one of the greatest finales ever) i wish we had gotten another season#they had as good a run as a show on that network could hope for but there are few shows on there that eclipsed the network like Riverdale#like the list includes like. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Gossip Girl. and ig The Vampire Diaries. and that's it.#(that list is for shows almost exclusively produced by the CW. CXG DID have other producing companies but it was largely the CW).#no show will ever quite be like Riverdale ever again and no show will ever reach the heights it did.#especially not on their shoestring CW budget.#like honestly i just need more Riverdale in my life.#like RAS and the writing team found such a great way to turn their weaknesses into strengths.#as an article on the show once said [paraphrased]: it was a great show that was really good at pretending to be bad.#even now nobody gets the show like i do.#everyone thinks it's some silly little show about crazy shit with crazy plotlines and pretty lighting and aesthetics but no substance—#when in reality it's an incredible pulpy anti-fascist text questioning the role of authority using those aesthetics for a larger purpose#but i'll save the real analysis for whenever i get around to actually making the Riverdale video essay i need in my life#unless Quinton Reviews or SuperEyepatchWolf beat me to it first. they're the only people who i think will actually understand the show.#like SuperEyepatchWolf's video on the show is already pretty fun even if it's a little dismissive of the substance of the show—#(tbf to him it only covered up until the S05 mid-season finale and S06 hadn't released yet)#but like he at least feels like he gets the spirit of the show. especially with the wrestling comparison.#and i hope i don't need to explain why Quinton would get it.#anyway. i need the Riverdale crew back.

okay but if my dnd campaign was a fandom i could just make a post that just says "Juice fleeing from real emotional intimacy with Amora just to try (and fail) to have meaningless sex with Gal" and it would get 100 notes and like 3 tag essays
#maybe i want to see tag essays about my characters. what of it#juice#my ocs#this has been a post#timeline of events that night was like#controlled intimacy with wren > real intimacy with amora > fake intimacy with gal#he needed an outlet. there was too much Emotion happening#(this is how juice flirting with gal is actually about wruice)#all thsi because some tourists stopped in the midle of the sidewalk blocking me while i was hefting groceries home#and the line 'do i look like a fucking tourist' got stuck in my head#me quoting myself in my own head: that was a good fucking line#(for those without context -- to paraphrase:#juice: do you wanna get out of here; gal: there's not really any sightseeing here; juice: do i look like a fucking tourist)

finally finished hamlet! i think my favourite part was between the king and hamlet when it essentially just went "where's the fucking corpse" "why don't you go to hell". very funny book. i love hamlet and his comebacks. the only part i can't forgive him for is killing rosencrantz and guildenstern
#a biscuit's rambles#'if hes in heaven send ur messengers if hes in thother place search him yourself' i LOVE that line sososo much#heavily paraphrased obviously#also the end was. well. everyone fucking dies yay#was scared for Horatio for a second ngl#anyway! very good read. i really liked hamlet. ophelia deserved a lot better#on to twelfth night then! im gonna write an essay on that i should get reading lmao#just didn't want it to be my first shakespeare read so id actually have some experience with the language already#and now after hamlet i am pretty confident in my understanding of elizabethan english so! i can properly read my essay topic book yay#im so excited for that still itll be so cool

touching glass mournfully i have to go to bed instead of writing a gigantic post about all of the undersiders relationships to their cape identities. world a fuck
#taylor alone could be an essay i might have to chunk it.#rachel and brian are like. a paragraph#but an iotan paragraph is like 5 normal person paragraphs so#now alec. you know how i can go on about. but if i shorten it it's also like a paragraph#lisa and taylor however things get rough#aisha...hm. more research needs to be conducted. but i have ideas.#lisa i need to conduct more research on also i'd largely just b paraphrasing that one tumblr user v1leblood post.

hot take but I think a lot of current fantasy has lost the "what the heck" nonsensical vibes and that's why a lot of it is so bad
#people are so obsessed with 'being like tolkien' that they forget that a key part of fantasy#is the magic and wonder and inexplicable occurences#some things we need to accept on faith and move on#like you don't NEED to understand the mechanics of portals to other worlds or magic#or have a logical realistic fantasy realm#it's fantasy!! it's by definition UNREALISTIC and WEIRD and INEXPLICABLE#tolkien himself said something along the lines of 'if you explain how it works#it's not magic anymore'#(somewhere in on fairy stories I think)#but the point is that I actually could not care less about whether your fictional languages and histories etc etc#are realistic or sensible#if I wanted to read about a different culture or language or place I'd pick up a regular fiction novel#fantasy means that there's magic and things beyond our ken#lots of things will not and should not make sense#(logically. they should make sense in terms of fantasy)#(paraphrasing from sir terry here but it's unrealistic and nonsensical#for the third brother to succeed or for the sword to be pulled from the stone or for kindness and bravery to always win the day)#(but in a fantasy that is what makes sense; the illogical)#someday I'll write up my discord rant on modern fantasy as a true essay but it is not this day lol

What makes Makima a good villain
have not read chainsaw man
HMMM hard question to answer but I'll try. I would say something I like about Makima is her development from a seemingly kind figure into something that becomes more undeniably hostile. although I would say that as the audience it's much easier to pick up on her real nature as there are plenty of hints (one of her first scenes is her telling denji that he has no choice but to be her metaphorical dog or she will have him killed) but if anything that adds to the tension because you can see something in her that the protagonists are oblivious to. but there's also a weird...comfort to her that's hard to deny even if you can tell something is very wrong? in the anime especially her voice is very hypnotic and collected and the way she composes herself is very captivating, I think there's a reason viewers get so unbelievably drawn into her because there is just something about her that makes the idea of her caring for you and providing for you addictive no matter what kind of hell and isolation that it comes with. Denji as a character is very very much a shonen protagonist for the modern age as at the beginning of the series he is shown living in severe levels of poverty that...are hard not to relate to in some way given how dire straits are for everyone who isn't born well off these days. So to see this starved and abused kid be taken into the arms and fed and housed and shown kindness by this perfect and ethereal woman...it's hard to deny the comfort in imagining yourself in that situation and having all of your worries and stresses taken care of regardless of what exactly she's putting you through in exchange.
There is a huge amount of tension that builds through the whole series as what Makima is capable of is revealed and the question of what Makima is becomes ever present in your brain, and watching any scenes of her with Denji gives the sensation of watching a snake slowly wrap around unassuming prey. The entire time you're waiting for her to finally strike, and when the other shoe finally drops the payoff is heart wrenching. I think Denji being a teenage boy is actually really important to the effectiveness of Chainsaw Man's story because Makima knows exactly how to play to his heart and desires so to string him along and get him to do exactly as she says. Denji is probably one of the most teenage boy characters I've ever seen LOL and she knows exactly how to play him in a way that is easy for adults to identify but hard for a teenager to see through. I've seen people call her a "groomer" and while I don't think that is a label that fits her since it carries very specific intentions and connotations that don't line up with her character I think elements of Chainsaw Man work really well as metaphors for certain kinds of abusive relationships/dynamics. I saw a comment once where someone said that Chainsaw Man helped them realize that their relationship was abusive and that makes complete sense to me.
ANYWAYS she's fascinating to me I really like her and I enjoy her complexities a lot. She's definitely one of my favorite villains in anything I've read/watched and I think she's awesome I think getting into Chainsaw Man is worth it just to see her in action alone. I am biased though because I really like scary manipulative women and I think she's kind of sexy which as you might have noticed I am very far from alone in if you've been online for the last 4 years
#askz#anon#i would recommend watching super eyepatch wolfs video on chainsaw man if you want to get the idea for why its so good#i definitely paraphrased him a few times here because I couldnt think of better ways to phrase things LOL#just dont watch the part after the patreon credits as it spoils the end and is for people who have already read csm lawl#csm#this started very casual and then kind of turned into an essay

The thing that I find most infuriating about AI is the way that it is actively undermining my students' education. How am I supposed to teach them to think critically and work through problems if every time they encounter a question they don't immediately have an answer for they go running to ChatGPT to do it for them?
#i'm grading so many essays that I suspect they had AI write it for them and then just paraphrased#and its missing the entire point#if they can't generate their own ideas about something they've read or about the world in general where will they be?#but I can't teach them to do that if all their effort is going into avoiding doing that#and the internet is bending over backwards to help them not think#I think it's maybe the most pernicious effect of AI#and it makes me angry

I am happy for Ferrari and for Carlos, I do like him but I am team Charles.
Carole’s had an excellent drive and nobody can take that away from him and Charles was the perfect team mate doing what he could to ensure the win. However when it’s Charles fighting Carlos doesn’t listen to orders and does what he likes he is selfish and not a team player. If Charles was leading yesterday instead of creating a gap he would’ve been trying to fight Charles but nothing seems to be said about this.
I feel for Charles I get all the drivers are selfish to a point they have to be but Charles never seems to have any luck or a team mate willing to help him out I mean Carlos even helped lando ffs 🤦🏼♀️
This is very true I agree 100%
It’s the eternal problem with Carlos, I like him, I really do, he’s charismatic and funny and fucking gorgeous and you tend to like him so seeing him win makes you happy, but then he does something stupid and you realize he was never a good guy to race with
Ferrari is always willing to sacrifice Charles, and when they try to sacrifice Carlos they behave like they’re gentle parenting, and it just doesn’t work because Carlos will sit on the ground and repeat “no” until he ends up doing what he wants
Not me repeating the things anon said I’m sorry babe you truly explained it perfectly I’m just idk
My problem will always be with Ferrari because we know that they are the main problem, but Carlos does play into the problem of Charles unlucky career
And idk what their relationship it like, wether they like each other or they pretend to like each other but Carlos is the type of guy who will let his opinion of people interfere in the way he approaches them while racing
#anon gave me like a comprehensive essay about it and k just paraphrased it sorry anon you were great idk if anything I said made sense#anon#formula 1

The thing is I'd be a really good video essayist but I fear most people would click away as soon as they hear my weird Canadian accent
#sasha speaks#and they'd be cowards for doing so#see I don't have a vancouver accent or a newfie accent#nope. I'm from southern ontario. I have a southern accent#more specifically a golden horseshoe accent#even the way I pronounce 'accent' is weird#it's like æksent but the æ is the strongest twangiest sound you've ever heard#it's the flat canadian a#what would I make video essays about? literally anything that catches my fancy#I have Opinions that need to be voiced#anyway to paraphrase every hack youtuber out there: be sure to like comment and subscribe if you wanna hear my dumbass accent
