"Is black the absence of light - or the presence of color?"
the darkness in his eyes is from the absence of any light that would usually find the color underneath...

Not to get too literature major on the five other people in this fandom, but have you guys ever read Montaigne's On Friendship bc that's just Esen’s brain. That's what going on up there.
To paraphrase exactly what I mean, the argument of the essay, but it's Esen's version: Hey guys. Have u met my bestie, Ouyang? He's so cool and smart and talented. We share a friendship so deep and intimate that nothing can compare. Sure yeah u can fuck women but what is romantic yearning when compared to our friendship. Some people would call this brotherhood, but they're wrong, bc this is better. I want to talk to him and grow old with him and delight in his company for the rest of my life. Women could never. Imagine if they were capable of cultivating so deep a bond tho, then both our souls and bodies could be tied together. That'd be the ultimate form of friendship, but u can't have sex with a guy, that would be gay, and women can't love like this so they're out the window too.
He explains this to his brother once, who immediately goes that's kinda gay and he immediately goes "no its not u just don't know the epic highs and lows of having the ultimate homie relationship. That's so sad for u, I hope you one day find hapiness like this. Ouyang is my bestie <3 (i desire him carnally but thats just bc hes pretty u know how it is).
I just think Wang Baoxiang has to be the most long suffering person in the entirety of these books bc he's the only B plot character self-aware enough to truly realize he's surrounded by idiots. Esen is Dumbass Prime.

THE BEST OF SHENKO 1/?
The end of the world has a way of reminding you of all the things you forgot to say do. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition (2021)
#mira makes gifs ✨#kaidan alenko#sophie shepard#EDI#shenko#fshenko#mass effect#mass effect legendary edition#dailygaming#OTP: you're real enough for me#i learned i am physically incapable of creating less than like 20 gifs at a time#but shenko stonks are up right now!!#gif’ing my favorite bisexuals gives me joy 🥹#even though ME2 is dry as shit for shenko content like it’s literally the sahara desert#like a whole ass 10 minutes max of cutscenes between shep and kaidan like come on#like 2 minutes in the prologue and like 8 minutes of cutscenes on horizon#and then an email and looking at the picture in your cabin before the suicide mission#i'm so sorry y'all ME2 shenko canon is absolute shit (besides kaidan being rightfully angry on horizon) which is why we ✨ignore it✨ 🥰#but i rant about ME2 VS treatment too much so i will not write another essay about it in the tags#i will say the EDI line isn't the exact quote from the game but i think about it a lot tbf#same with the quote i borrowed from anderson too lmao (which is also a tiny bit paraphrased)#i just love EDI asking shep for relationship advice when you get to follow shep and kaidan's relationship/struggles across 3 games#and anderson's quote about all the things you forgot to do in relation kahlee to is just *chef's kiss* when you think about shenko#like whether it starts in ME1 or ME3 shenko has some really fantastic moments across the series#two characters with strong morals who realize that they're falling in love and literally start to become each other's strength??#their soft place to land?? their support when they need it?? shenko will always have my heart#also the shenko quotes you get are the most fire thing in the world#you're real enough for me?? you make me feel human?? i want to be your strength- your soft place to land?? shenko you will always be famous#I FORGOT IM GONNA FIGHT LIKE HELL FOR THE CHANCE TO HOLD YOU AGAIN TOO LIKE??#but i’ll stop ranting now bc i do that wayyy to much in my tags lol. have a good day wherever you are! <3

#james talks#riverdale#miss the whole crew really but Betty especially bc Lili was so magnificent#god as perfect as the finale was (and it really was one of the greatest finales ever) i wish we had gotten another season#they had as good a run as a show on that network could hope for but there are few shows on there that eclipsed the network like Riverdale#like the list includes like. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Gossip Girl. and ig The Vampire Diaries. and that's it.#(that list is for shows almost exclusively produced by the CW. CXG DID have other producing companies but it was largely the CW).#no show will ever quite be like Riverdale ever again and no show will ever reach the heights it did.#especially not on their shoestring CW budget.#like honestly i just need more Riverdale in my life.#like RAS and the writing team found such a great way to turn their weaknesses into strengths.#as an article on the show once said [paraphrased]: it was a great show that was really good at pretending to be bad.#even now nobody gets the show like i do.#everyone thinks it's some silly little show about crazy shit with crazy plotlines and pretty lighting and aesthetics but no substance—#when in reality it's an incredible pulpy anti-fascist text questioning the role of authority using those aesthetics for a larger purpose#but i'll save the real analysis for whenever i get around to actually making the Riverdale video essay i need in my life#unless Quinton Reviews or SuperEyepatchWolf beat me to it first. they're the only people who i think will actually understand the show.#like SuperEyepatchWolf's video on the show is already pretty fun even if it's a little dismissive of the substance of the show—#(tbf to him it only covered up until the S05 mid-season finale and S06 hadn't released yet)#but like he at least feels like he gets the spirit of the show. especially with the wrestling comparison.#and i hope i don't need to explain why Quinton would get it.#anyway. i need the Riverdale crew back.

finally finished hamlet! i think my favourite part was between the king and hamlet when it essentially just went "where's the fucking corpse" "why don't you go to hell". very funny book. i love hamlet and his comebacks. the only part i can't forgive him for is killing rosencrantz and guildenstern

hot take but I think a lot of current fantasy has lost the "what the heck" nonsensical vibes and that's why a lot of it is so bad

Every new thing I learn about James Somerton's process just drives home how he almost (but really doesn't) knows what he's doing. Yes, of course you use the sources you read as a jumping off point. Of course you copy and paste the important sections into your outline document so you can reread them. That's why you put them in quotation marks.
#James Somerton#honesty time: I totally believe he did this by accident#his entire problem is that he writes like a fandom account with bad takes#his anecdotal evidence that Todd in the Shadows spent a two hour video trying to find sources for?#they're all fandom drama taken out of their cultural context#(yes fandom counts as a subculture and therefore has specific context)#and all of it gets attributed to straight white women coz everyone knows shippers are all straight and cis women /s#he simultaneously treats his videos like bad fandom meta and Documentaries of Great Importance and those just do not mesh#it's part of why his videos were so unbearable if you actually knew what he was talking about#he learned how to make a youtube video essay. He did not learn how to write or study any of his chosen subject matter#I think that's also why he was not expecting to be called out the way he has because I suspect he probably thought everyone wrote this way#a lot of old video essayists especially the Chez Apocalypse bunch were very good at not broadcasting just how much went into their videos#so their style that has now become the norm feels incredibly off the cuff but is heavily researched#but also they are using that research to support their own hypotheses and ideas as you are supposed to#so I wonder if when he got called out he just brushed it off because surely he just writes the same way everyone writes#(and hey fandom posts are rarely cited because they assume everyone knows what they are talking about)#it almost makes me feel sorry for him but all I can think about is how catstrophically bad he is at this job#oh and for everyone wondering: I've found the best way to research is to put quotes in quotation marks#paraphrasing in either different punctuating or a different colour#and your own personal thoughts based on the source in something different again#all with the correct citations for your preferred style#this makes sure you have everything cited so when you put it all together you can do it easily without having to go back through it all#and prevents this from happening#(tbh I'm kinda sad I'm not still teaching. This would have been a perfect meme for how to do your damn citations week)

been explaining & introducing kotlc to one of my headmates (we’ve been rereading… the brainrot is destroying us… never gonna be able to let go of this series)
but yeah my favorite of his takes include
“Why is everyone okay with this borderline fascist society?”
“Alden and Quinlin should kiss”
[insert complete horror at the concept of matchmaking]
“I want a pet dinosaur”
“Are they ((the elves)) racist? Speciesist?”
“Does Sophie ever get to say ‘fuck’?”

What makes Makima a good villain
have not read chainsaw man
HMMM hard question to answer but I'll try. I would say something I like about Makima is her development from a seemingly kind figure into something that becomes more undeniably hostile. although I would say that as the audience it's much easier to pick up on her real nature as there are plenty of hints (one of her first scenes is her telling denji that he has no choice but to be her metaphorical dog or she will have him killed) but if anything that adds to the tension because you can see something in her that the protagonists are oblivious to. but there's also a weird...comfort to her that's hard to deny even if you can tell something is very wrong? in the anime especially her voice is very hypnotic and collected and the way she composes herself is very captivating, I think there's a reason viewers get so unbelievably drawn into her because there is just something about her that makes the idea of her caring for you and providing for you addictive no matter what kind of hell and isolation that it comes with. Denji as a character is very very much a shonen protagonist for the modern age as at the beginning of the series he is shown living in severe levels of poverty that...are hard not to relate to in some way given how dire straits are for everyone who isn't born well off these days. So to see this starved and abused kid be taken into the arms and fed and housed and shown kindness by this perfect and ethereal woman...it's hard to deny the comfort in imagining yourself in that situation and having all of your worries and stresses taken care of regardless of what exactly she's putting you through in exchange.
There is a huge amount of tension that builds through the whole series as what Makima is capable of is revealed and the question of what Makima is becomes ever present in your brain, and watching any scenes of her with Denji gives the sensation of watching a snake slowly wrap around unassuming prey. The entire time you're waiting for her to finally strike, and when the other shoe finally drops the payoff is heart wrenching. I think Denji being a teenage boy is actually really important to the effectiveness of Chainsaw Man's story because Makima knows exactly how to play to his heart and desires so to string him along and get him to do exactly as she says. Denji is probably one of the most teenage boy characters I've ever seen LOL and she knows exactly how to play him in a way that is easy for adults to identify but hard for a teenager to see through. I've seen people call her a "groomer" and while I don't think that is a label that fits her since it carries very specific intentions and connotations that don't line up with her character I think elements of Chainsaw Man work really well as metaphors for certain kinds of abusive relationships/dynamics. I saw a comment once where someone said that Chainsaw Man helped them realize that their relationship was abusive and that makes complete sense to me.
ANYWAYS she's fascinating to me I really like her and I enjoy her complexities a lot. She's definitely one of my favorite villains in anything I've read/watched and I think she's awesome I think getting into Chainsaw Man is worth it just to see her in action alone. I am biased though because I really like scary manipulative women and I think she's kind of sexy which as you might have noticed I am very far from alone in if you've been online for the last 4 years

The thing that I find most infuriating about AI is the way that it is actively undermining my students' education. How am I supposed to teach them to think critically and work through problems if every time they encounter a question they don't immediately have an answer for they go running to ChatGPT to do it for them?
