call it a hunch. call it paranoia. call it the caution clarice has had since she was a little girl, the thing that kept her alert and alive throughout her time in the fbi. from the moment she laid eyes on the psychiatrist, she had distrusted him. felt something off about him. there was nothing concrete that she could prove, no persuading anyone around his charismatic nature, but clarice was put off by his near perfection, the emotions that never quite reached his eyes. even jack seemed to be charmed by hannibal, but clarice wouldn't allow herself to fall into it as everyone else seemed to. 'you aren't th'first man t'call me demanding, doctor lecter, but if you call me little or thing again, i'll have you quarantined from this case faster than you can say my correct title,' clarice, with shoulders back and chin raised, looks into hannibal's eyes with no fear of consequence or confrontation. when john drew hannah asher's name for secret santa, he was honestly at a loss for what to get her. he hasn't had the privilege of knowing her ⸻ and the rest of the ED staff for long. but he still wanted to get the best gift he could. once he set aside the money, first making sure it was financially possible as the budget was about forty dollars. while he knew it wasn't a lot for most doctors, he was still a broke medical resident; and the only way he could justify it was that he didn't have a family to buy for. so he decided to do his best. 

he went to a store to see what he could get for her, deciding to get her a heated blanket, while it was on sale. then, various other items such as her favorite type of vitners potato chips, and other relaxation items such as shower steamers,  and a pair of cute holiday socks that look like doughnuts. the staff was supposed to exchange the day of the holiday party, so after putting the items in a larger gift bag, he headed to Gaffney for his shift like normal. 

a few hours passed by as the morning was a little chaotic after a car accident involving two families got rolled in, but when things started to calm down he decided to give hannah his gift for her. approaching the ob/gyn, he smiled and held up the gift bag. ❛ merry christmas, hannah. I was your secret santa. I uh ⸻ hope you like everything. ❜ honestly he was just proud he didn't ask for any help.

she couldn't prevent herself from smirking as will walks away, checking her apple watch seeing that she had about an hour to go before midnight. she kept herself busy until then, taking it upon herself to stock the ED supply closet. a task that she doesn't normally do, but she didn't mind it. she had set an alarm so when it was time to meet will halstead, she wasn't late. she puts on her coat, and steps outside in the chicago cold. in fact, she was two minutes early. ❛ alright i am here. although, why are we out here? it feels like negative fifty out here. ❜ sure she was exaggerating, but that is what it felt like.

something had seemed off about buck over the last few days, and eddie couldn't quite put his finger on what it was. he'd tried to find a way to bring it up, but every time he tried the words got lost on his lips. now, though, he was unable to keep it to himself anymore. not when it could potentially affect the way buck performed on the job. not to mention wanting to find out what was wrong before anybody else on the 118 figured out something was going on as well.

the task was to decorate a narrow six and a half foot artificial christmas tree that is kept in the doctors lounge; and it was john and naomi that was asked to do it. according to maggie, it was the first year they had this specific one. and honestly, john loved the idea. for the past week or so, every child that was there to get medical attention ( if they were able ) or if they there with family had the opportunity to make an ornament with the hospitals child life specialists in the consultation room, and the turnout was fantastic. among the provided supplies were pipe cleaners, felt, paint, paper, and of course, dreadful glitter that ended up everywhere. lenox wasn't happy.

❛ i love this one. ❜ the doctor held up a specific ornament that was made by a six year old named matthew, who came in for a rare allergic reaction to some holiday ham at a family thanksgiving celebration. this one consisted of a white pipe cleaner shaped into a snowflake, with various shades of blue pony beads all over it. he decides to place it on the front of the tree, hooking it to the closest limb.

❛ i still haven't put up my tree yet. but in my defense, I am here like one hundred hours a week. ❜ he said randomly, chuckling as he placed the next one from the lot of delicate and cute ornaments. ❛ but I just have a small three foot one. it is all I have room for, and it has just been me for a long time. do you have a tree? ❜

everything stops , in that moment nothing else exists. the echo of his voice , over and over again. the return of victors to the arena , the price they would all pay for the safety taken for granted. it's empty , the moments between the announcement heard and how annie has ended up here. the sound of the waves , how they terrify and comfort all the same. she's already back to that place , back in the arena where the water drowns her, pulls her under. there is no escaping , and that's become all too clear with the quell that is upon them.

she doesn't notice @espres0s at first , not until he's beside her. annie tries to offer him a smile , but it catches and doesn't reach. it falls , her throat grows tight. she won't cry , she won't let the capitol have that victory. ❛ if they draw her name , i'll volunteer. ❜ and mags would do the same for her , annie was no fool to that. neither of them were fit for the games , but what choice did they have ?
