always thinking about super soldier/healing factor body horror. bones healing wrong within minutes, skin forming over glass and shrapnel. when steve rogers stops the helicopter with his bare hands, his sternum splits and his rib cage splays as his bones give up before his muscles do. sometimes it's less destructive just to leave the bullet inside. how can you perform surgery on someone who heals faster than you can cut? chronic pain is a wicked side effect of an accelerated healing factor as your body is constantly mending and moving everything, everything, everything at a rapid pace. sure the viruses don't affect you, but does your body eliminate them before you can spread them to everyone else? you are always hungry, you are always wired; some days you feel too much, other days you can hardly feel anything at all. everyone knows the metabolism is faster but you'll also run out of air long before anyone else... and just how much can you recover from? maybe your body is more resilient, but your mind isn't necessarily. unless it is, and you're no longer you. just how much pain can you actually take? 'cause you can feel it all. the serum speeds up natural processes; it fixes things but it does not prevent them. it doesn't save you. there are many, many things that it is not a mercy to survive.
#i've seen a few metas floating around here and i'm sure some comics & fics go into it#especially xmen ones which i haven't read much of#but this is something that floats around in my brain a lot when i watch the captain america movies#captain america#super soldier#marvel#meta

I agree 100% on Duggan’s run re: the character writing and history for Tony were 10/10 but I’d have liked more of it to not be so tied to the Fall of X.
It’s why I’m excited for Duggan’s West Coast Avengers, and I wonder if Duggan felt the same, he wanted to write more Tony but he had done his arc and current Marvel seems pretty set on 2 years per writer unless there’s like an historic run going or a planned end (like Immortal Hulk or Kelly Thompson’s Captain Marvel) so he got Tony for WCA to keep his arc going but separated from the main book. And he separated Tony and Rhodey for Plot Reasons in his run so it will good to see them together as a duo in this book!
Plus Duggan set up Firestar and Tony as sources/confidants to each other in the X-books, and Firestar’s kind outcast status with the mutants, so I’m very interested in how that will play out. And if Duggan pairs her withe Tony as his Red Headed Love Interest and/or Assistant…well it makes more sense then Patsy&MJ lol. and Angelica has quite the history with Emma so that's ANOTHER point of intrigue lol especially since Duggan himself had Emma and Angelica bring it up recently, so Tony and Emma’s recent marriage might be a fun plot point.
(Add in the recent Hellcat&Iron Man mini series and Tony has had recent history with 3/4 of the…defunct Marvel Divas team (remember that? Oh 2009). Tho he’s had some dealings with Monica as well? But not personal 1-on-1 time idt? But how funny is it that they tried to make a “Birds of Prey” counterpart and they got 2 redheads and 2 Cat themed heroes on the team of 4 heroes should have gone all the way and done all Cats or all Red Heads lol.)
And it seems WCA is going to have more than one “seeking redemption/a fresh start” members, never mind the complex histories of Jessica Drew and Tony and Angelica, what with Ultron and Blue Bolt joining? So Tony having a team of characters like that I’m interested in.
(I think too, Duggan was criticized during his Xmen runs for focusing more on his fav characters rather then the full team so we’ll see how this goes, but cross our finger with at hopefully Tony is a focus in any case!)
Let’s hope the run is successful enough that eventually we see a blond love interest of Tony’s make at least an appearance! Steve OR Emma haha. Or even better, Steve joins once his Avengers mini is done. I liked his Steve a lot in Marvel 1872, and his writing of Tony along with their relationship is what gave us hope for Duggan’s run so more of that please! And I did like Tony and Emma’s romance, much more respectful to both characters then *ahem* other recent Hero/Tony pairings.
I'd actually never heard of Marvel Divas, so thanks for the link! I'm gonna check that out. That certainly looks like An Experience, whooo.
(Honestly I have no idea what Marvel is thinking with some of these Themed character lineups. I like to imagine them getting pitched the IM & Hellcat Annual and the Iron Cat mini at the same time and just being like "Cat??? Cat. Ok. Yes. All the cats.")
I think the WCA lineup looks good -- and, honestly, I am a fan of writers focusing on their faves. I'd rather have them get to write their faves than be forced to write a character they don't want, so I hope Duggan likes everyone on the team and I'm excited to see more of Tony and Rhodey's story -- plus, he left a lot of little plot hooks dangling in his IM run that he could pick back up on.
I haven't read a whole lot of her, but I really liked what Duggan was doing with Firestar in his X books because I have had a ridiculous amount of fondness for her since Busiek's Avengers run and it'll be nice to see her actually on a team with Tony again.
More Emma/Tony would always be good -- honestly, Tony with exes he's still on speaking terms with is so novel that whatever happens it's gonna be interesting. (I mean, there's Tony/Jan, but they haven't interacted recently, except in Twilight, which was not 616. And I think Cantwell made Patsy go insane in the recent Hellcat series? Anyway, I don't think she's coming back anytime soon.)
I would obviously also always be up for Steve and Tony on the same team, and I think Duggan wrote Steve well both in 1872 and in the recent Uncanny Avengers mini. I feel like Marvel could totally give us a new Captain America & Iron Man miniseries, also. I don't know if it was meant to signify anything, but the trade of the Cap & IM mini has a 1 on the spine, which is not the case for other one-shot minis I have in trade. It could also just mean that Marvel is bad at graphic design, but I'm still hoping.

i'm both excited and nervous to get lorna in xmen 97 tbh.
on one hand, LORNA!!! i love lorna! and this is our chance to finally get a non-toxic dadneto where he isn't a shitty father to his three kids. (plus pietro and wanda are still his kids in this universe so...)
on the other hand, she's back in x-factor. which yeah, it's the 90s, and x-factor was going in the og animated series. but especially with ANOTHER xf series going on RIGHT NOW where she and havok are stuck together (i haven't read it lmk if they aren't a couple and i'll consider it) it's just... tiring. plus in the og she didn't show up all too much and when she did she had no personality.
i do wanna stay optimistic tho!!! 97 blew me away with actually being good for a disney project, and i want to cross my fingers and say beau demayo has it covered. i heard rumors he was fired but he's still posting on instagram like he's working on it so... idk?
anyways i love lorna and i'm buying a figure of her to celebrate

hello! i really liked your fics, especially the dc-xmen ones, and they made me interested in reading the comics. do you have any recs for starters? thank you :D
So a long-running gag between my sibling and I is that they aren't allowed to send me any panels or information about the X-Men, because I don't like the X-Men comics. Have I legitimately read a bunch? Sure. Would I recommend any of them? No.
I'd say X-Force (starring private eye Jamie) wasn't bad, except the 10yo girl got aged up into an 18yo and started making out with the lead. Cable & Deadpool probably barely counts as X-Men but it's definitely the best Cable and the best Deadpool comic simultaneously. My X-Men fics are based almost entirely off the children's cartoon X-Men Evolution, which is the only X-Men media I can say with my whole chest that I really enjoy. I heard that X-Men Blue was good.
As for where to start with DC comics...I'm struggling with a personal opinion on that too. I can't give a single comic that's the best Batman comic to start with, because the popularity of the Batman arc has an inverse relationship to its quality. The best Batman comic is some random one-off by Denny O'Neil in the 70s that was never mentioned again. I'm not sure how often this rec is given but Batman: Black and White is one of the few one-off Batman things that is sincerely gorgeous and moving (unlike The Dark Knight Returns or Arkham Asylum A Serious House on Serious Earth or The Killing Joke or Batman: Year One or The Long Halloween or Under The Red Hood or). If you've rolled up here for the Batfam exclusively then Cassandra's 90s Batgirl run is unironically pretty good.
If you enjoy reading teenagers being awful the late 90s-early 00s Young Justice comic by Peter David is delightful - if you enjoyed Impulse in it, then check out my favorite comic run of all time Impulse (not best, just favorite). The 90s Mark Waid Flash run was lovely. Outside of the heroes I've actually written, if you're pretentious as fuck the the 80s Denny O'Neil Question is fantastic. If you're not pretentious and want something much lighter then the early 00s Blue Bettle and 70s Shazam comics are unbelievably fun.
That probably doesn't help much! I love Batman so much but I couldn't believe that I couldn't actually list of any famous Batman arcs or stories that I genuinely love. Life of a Batman fan. I'm so sorry I can't actually recommend an X-Men comic. I'm sure there are good ones I just haven't read any.
#granted most of the modern x-men ive read has been joss whedon so#and he's a fine enough comics writer he just rarely goes in any particularly interesting directions#disclaimer that i haven't read any modern batman comics in a VERY long time so if the list is looking a bit antique thats why#weirdly enough im much more of a DC girl#but I can recommend more of Marvel. huh.#my asks#also im not joking about cable&deadpool it was really definitive for the actual deadpool we know of today#he was a very different character before that. also it did a miracle and made cable sufferable#legit dont read any dp comics other than that one theyre trying too hard#the 90s run is fascinating but mostly because he locks blind al in a torture chamber whenever she annoys him#not even in a funny way. its fucked up he kind of sucks.

are the avengers cops? how does any of this works comics are so confusing
are the avengers cops ; no. at least, not originally, and not really until 9/11, but then I would argue that the majority of superhero teams including the xmen have fed into propaganda for the military since 9/11. before that though, the avengers were really not cops; they all actively hate and resent the government agent henry gyrich who is supposed to be their overseer, i mean, vision, Wanda, Beast, and im pretty sure sam all physically wanted to beat the shit out of him. in one issue of the avengers, beast says to simon williams while flying to help some russian people "there's no american before our name". Vision was often used to discuss minority politics under comics code authority, as was Wanda.
after 9/11, they have become much more militarised, I'll admit that, but again, I'd argue that also applies to the Justice League or anyone else. But that definitely isn't reflective of the Avengers as a whole and dismissing them as cops or feds is just dumb because various avengers characters have actively had stories about the corruption of the military and the police force and police violence or police apathy; similarly, the xmen became cops during x-treme x-men, so you can't really claim one team to be one way and make excuses for another.
And yeah, it's a problem... I don't want to say it's exclusive to xmen fans but I'll be honest, I haven't seen comic Avengers fans or comic FF fans or comic GOTG or Inhumans or whatever fans act the same way in the same volume; you might get the odd person making fun of the X-Men but they are few and in between. And I like the X-Men; Armando Muñoz is one of my fave characters who I am constantly starved for content of, and Ororo and Kurt and the rest go without saying as being great characters. But there's just this weird like... inate anger towards the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, for some reason and I don't know why? I mean, I mostly blame those podcasts ( you know who ) who constantly make excuses for like... bodysnatcher betsy but the avengers all get painted with the cop brush and are just not discussed unless to clown on them. Which is fine, but then dont act like you have zero influence on fandom perceptions of these characters 😭
Anyway, genuinely, there should be more willingness to be just apathetic. Like, if you haven't read the FF, you can just say oh , they're not my thing, you don't need to talk about how Reed Richards is anti-mutant and a cop and has personally murdered your mother, like cmon 😭 again, I'm sure fans of other comic teams are also guilty of this, but it is by large a phenomenon in x-men circles and it's annoying because it kind of keeps me from reaching out to other fans, like I actually LIKE these guys but if you're also telling me how much these other characters that I'm really passionate about suck ass then I don't want to interact with you! I stop feeling passionate about these characters because I feel like everyone who likes them vehemently hates the other guys I'm into! It's just disheartening a lot of the time for people with eggs in more than one basket I think.
But there are plenty comic communities that are okay, I mean, I'm having a pretty good time on the small ant-man fandom! By nature of how divisive Hank is, a lot of people are already used to people having other opinions so it's mostly chill, and there are a few discords I'm part of that are nice and chill! It's just sort of hard to find them, especially on twitter, beyond like, a few FF fans and the very small comic Scarletvision fandom everyone there is so aggressive it's not a fun time 😭 keep searching tho anon, there are good communities out there! Just hard to find through the qrts of the official marvel account sudjdndbhffh

okay, you don't have to answer this, but. script recs?? also, have you ever read a script of a film you haven't seen? is that a good or bad feeling? also, have YOU ever wanted to try scriptwriting?
oh hell yeah (I won't link them because sometimes links break Tumblr and won't let me post the post and if I have to write this again I'll die but googling "[thing name] script" should give you what you want)
Rocketman script obviously, it has all the deleted scenes and a lot of scenes are different and there's some parts that I don't like tbh but some parts are just so fuckdkcksjcjxing good oh my god
NBC hannibal scripts (all three seasons are online), especially the first episode of season one because it has SO much behind the scenes info and all the plans and camera shots and aesthetics are on it I can't explain properly but it's just so good and interesting
The huntsman script was super good??? I'm not really a fan of kingsman (nothing against it I just didn't get the hype) but holy shit the script had me screaming at some parts mostly coz I'm an Elton stannie but still there's so many changes and it's just so fucking good??? I found it by searching "kingsman script"
Rdj Sherlock 2009 😭😭 there's a lot of deleted scenes including one I despise but hey we all gotta suffer sometimes, but it also goes way more in depth into Holmes' emotional state and his relationship with Watson which I am an absolute hoe for and I also just love both of the rdj Sherlock movies so yeah definetly recommend
The script for the first 2000 X-Men movie, even if you're not into the mcu. The xmen movies are in a completely different vein and maybe it's just the fact that we had the dvd since before I was born and I grew up on this movie but I really really love it and the script for it was so good... It's kinda the same as with huntsman, there's a LOT of changes, and it's been a while so I can't exactly remember but I know it was a very cool script to read and there were several scenes I wish they kept in for the final movie
The Thor Ragnarok script is SO fucking funny it had me screaming the entire time, if you like the movie you'll be sure to love this script
The brokeback mountain script if you want to get emotional over that movie all over again, it's....hm. wig
as for the questions: no I don't think I've ever read one but I might, problem is most scripts come out way after the movie so if they ever do so I most likely will have seen the movie by the time I get the script, plus tbh I never thought about that before skdjsj but I might try, I'm sure it'd be interesting. And umm I'm not really a writer, maybe a script would be easier to write since it's mostly dialogue but I dunno, I'm more into acting than actually writing the story
